Located in Billings, MT, Bearcreek Billiard Manufacturing is an up andcoming billiard table manufacturing company. This Saunders Family teamcustom builds billiard tables one at a time, painstakingly slowly in order toturn out one beautiful table after another.Billy Saunders has been playing pool all of his life, and he has beenbuilding tables for over 35 years. He has built tables directly for people, and he has also worked in billiard table manufacturing plants. Billy hasowned three pool halls as well. He and his son Troy Saunders startedbuilding tables together in 1991.They build tables not only for private use, but also like to build pool halls. The first pool hall they built was for Billys brother, Lance Saunders. Overthe years they have built many different types of tables, from variouswood types to many distinct and creative styles. One customer wanted apool table to go into his log home, and thus Billy and Troy hand-craftedtheir first log pool table. Other tables have been made of oak, aspen, cedar, pine and juniper.Troy and his dad enjoy building each of the made-to-order tables almostas much as they love to play the game. On any given day, Billy can mostlikely be found over at BullWackers, shootin pool. And you can bet therehave been many late nighters at the Saunders home playing that onelast game. The small family owned business is the type of business that peopleenjoy dealing with, there are no dealers, everything is factory-direct. Thetables are priced at wholesale because there is no middle-man. Andwhats more the finishing product received by the customer is a one-of-a-kind; custom designed by themselves. See ad page 9

About the AuthorDean Shane Cassem

Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father fromLebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stickat age 15. His father and grandfather before him hadCassems restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb ofCharleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. Fromage 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn,Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placedsecond in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966).In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the barsand out of the rooms where stiffer competition would havehoned his game. His stroke subsided completely until hismid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coorsstatewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981.Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an

interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80s, his game went dormantagain until he sold his business and returned to school. At age 48, he completed hisundergraduate work in theology, and earned Masters degrees in Marriage & FamilyCounseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skillsand has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shanehas five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough, Resurrection,Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstoresby November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; SkinnyMalone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counselingpractice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for hisongoing Carter Keating Series. Shane has one daughter, Vickie Linn, a son-n-law, Brian, and a precious granddaughter, Shelbie Linn. You may visit Shanes web sites at;www.carterkeatingnovels.com or creativecounselingconcepts.com

BREAKTHROUGHA Short Story by: Dean Shane Cassem

PART 5In Part One, New friend Dave Wakefield introduces young CarterKeating to pocket billiards for the first time. Keating watches captivelyas Wakefield and Jimmy The Stick Gadwell play nine ball in WilliesPool Palace. Part One ends as Gadwell completes a spectacularnine ball session with Wakefield, smirks cockily as Wakefield stompsoff, then pulls up a chair next to young Keating for a chat. In PartTwo, Wakefield and Tools Spinard challenge Gadwell and youngKeating to an eight-ball match. Keating agrees, fails to make a shotthe entire time, and faces the ridicule of Spinard, Wakefield, Gadwelland the other patrons in Willies Pool Palace. Young Keating swearsthat he will learn to play the game, and play it well. Part III describesyoung Keatings rapid development as a player and, his introductionto Charley Sturgis, an old and wise mentor, who guides him tomaturity, both as a pool player and as an individual. Part IV findsKeating and Charley Sturgis in Willies Pool Palace dialoguing overa cup of coffee, talking about the rudiments of the game, and thequalities of real winners. Winter comes. Keating drops into Williesafter a winning match at a downtown parlor and whips up on DaveWakefield in a well-played nine ball match. Afterwards, Russell, theThin Man, Case, offers to back him against none other than Jimmythe Stick Gadwell, the very person who had actually tutored him onthe tables.CHARLEY STURGIS SPOKE QUIETLY, focus on the game n forgetabout the money. He rested his arms on the wheelchair, then continued. If someone wants to place a bet tell them to talk to the Thin Man. Stay toyourself and most of all, Carter, think for yourself. His eyes shifted andnarrowed on Gadwell as he stroked a couple of warm-up shots. Beready for anything, he added. Dont be surprised or alarmed at anyattempt to distract you. Just smile. Remember its an act of fear on hispart. Thats to your advantage, Carter.

Gadwell turned and eyed me, then jerked his head toward thetable. I pushed out of my seat and stepped up to the table. Eddy Cookseypressed in the nine balls and lifted the rack. Gettim, Carter he said in anencouraging nasal tone.

Lag for the break? Gadwell offered.Nod.We set ourselves at the table. Gadwell on the left, me on the

right. Go, he growled, and tapped the cue ball softly down the table. After hitting the back rail, it rebounded back toward me only three inchesfrom the rail. My shot followed Gadwells closely and finished a quarterinch better than Gadwells.

A hush fell over the place. The kid won the lag.Gadwell reached up and scratched his neck, and said nothing.

Grabbing the cue ball, I aligned myself right of center on the break linethen eyed the one ball and drew back and brought the cue stick forward.Upon impact, the cue ball jumped toward me then rebounded off the railtoward the center of the table. At the last moment, the eight kissed itfirmly into the corner pocket.

Scratch. Gadwell had ball in hand and an open table.A heavy murmur strolled through the crowd as Gadwell

positioned the cue ball in front of the one ball. He snapped in the one

This one is an oldie but a goodie. Startby placing the cue ball dead centerof the table width ways and halfwaybetween the side pocket and thediamond. Now align balls A and B tothe center of the side pockets andfrozen to the cue ball. Tap balls A andB in place so that they dont move. You can now remove the cue ball andplace as shown in the diagram. Thefour end balls should now be aimedalong the dashed lines for the cornersof the short rails. You are now readyto execute the shot. Aim the cue ballbetween balls A and B and hit the cueball slightly below center using a hardstroke. You should see all six ballsdisappear from the table following thesolid black lines. If any of the cornerballs miss, adjust their aim to allowfor the proper throw. I hope you enjoythis classic shot.

The Pool Whisperer . . .Lance McGill

THE BEST IN THE GAME...MAY NOT BE IN THE GAMEWhat you are about to read is not an article; it is word for word as spokenby Jimmy G- a billiard enthusiast; promoter; pool room owner; professionalgambler; and a man known, enjoyed and respected on the pro tour. It isin response to and in support of the article that Paul Marquez wrote inJuly. [Who the hell is lance McGill...and who cares?] Jimmy Gs wordshave gone from tape to paper without edit. I dont know jimmys reasonfor wanting this; I do know that the others want to be heard and that theyare relieved to have a volume of support for what they have long argued.Darin Walding, Jay Reed, Jeremy Nelson, and Scott Barnard have alltaken part; my commentary will follow in the form of a suggested workout-JAY REID: I have known Lance McGill for 11 years now and I want tosay that this man has shown me nothing but good from day one. He is ablessing to me and I feel very fortunate to have him in my life. I am thankfulthat I took the time to get to know him it would have been my loss had Inot. I have learned a great deal from him as well, both in pool and in life.He has such a compassionate caring way towards people; he is one thatwill truly sacrifice and go the extra mile for you. And the answer is yes incase you want to know. This man has the most powerful stroke I haveever seen. We only gambled once- races to 9 for $20.00 [because heliked me] he was running racks and as uncomfortable as it is to see arace to 9 go by without shooting what was worse is that a lot of the rackslooked alike and even worse than that he didnt look like he was doinganything. To this day I can still tell you my exact words to him and to thisday I still cannot believe they came flying out of my mouth. Heres whatI said. Get this now- I said, thats ok, you dont have to hit anymore ballsfor me highly unlikely for a pool player with my pride and ego. Thankyou for your time and teaching McGill.DARIN WALDING: I founded the billiard club at Portland State University,I placed high in the collegiate nationals, and I have played Mike Massey,Earl Strickland, Nick Varner, Johnny Archer, Jose Parica, and I have seenmore than that. I understand the difficulty that may come from what I sayhere. And what I say is this, Lance McGill plays one pocket better thanReyes and Parica combined; he plays straight pool like Mosconi did; heplays 9-ball better than Earl [its called level eleven] and he plays billiardslike Hoppe. That is of course all disputable and it is my opinion. What Ican tell you is that he is the only player having something like this writtenabout him and that alone is a clear indication. After 11 years ofextraordinary instruction I see and realize that he has gone beyond aplace that I can get to-I am pleased to leave him there.

I was at a pool tournament and noticed a game a friend of mine wasplaying. He was down 2-0 in a race to 4. His opponent broke, a couple ofshots, hes up 3-0. My friend walks over to me and made a statement thatI didnt think I would hear from a quality player like he is, I can work myway back through the losers bracket. I looked at him, with a look ofbewilderment I am sure, and said, Youre not out of this one yet. All youneed to do is win just one. Dont let him 4-zip you. Just win one. Helooked at me and said OK! He won the next game, now its 3-1. Helooks in my direction, I put my index finger up and told him, One more, just one more. Now its 3-2. He comes back over and says, I can winthis. I said, No, just win one more. Thats all you want to do for now. Hewins hill-hill. He looks at me and I said, Just one more. He won thematch 4-3.In the mental game of pool it is important to keep your goals simple, justwin one. Just win the first one. Take one game at a time, one shot at atime. Give yourself the opportunity to win or give yourself the opportunityfor another shot. OTB

Turkey TalkLets talk turkey. I dont, of course, gobble gobble, mean it literally, gobble gobble!! But really. Why would anyone want to talk turkey??The domestic cousins have a brain the size of a hazelnut and are theonly creature alive, I have heard that will eat themselves to death.

The wild ones, at the minimum, fly well and at best arewily prey creatures with great eyesight. Is there acultural fixture Wily Turkey? NO! Do we say,He/she has turkey eyes? NO! Is there a songFly Like a Turkey?? NO! Oh wellSo anyway, back to talking turkey. There is asituation, which never ceases to amaze me. Imaginehaving a fashion show and not allowing any classy

clothes; or having a whole bakery that sells only plainbagels; or a spelling bee with only one common 5-letter

word; or holding a tournament and not letting Joe andJoey play, because they are too good, but letting Mikey shoot becausesome of the locals manage to beat him once in awhile. Selectivediscrimination is reflective of a Loser Mentality. Knowing your skillsare outclassed by a strong opponent on the greens, yet facing him/her and trying anyway is the path of growth. I cannot help but feelthat banning specific non-pro individuals only because of their levelof skill is a cowardly action, which reflects poorly on the entire poolcommunity. How can players truly gauge their skills or improve whenspecific, high-calibre players are banned from the event? How canany of the remaining players take any real pride in winning in an arenabounded as tightly as a corseted woman? Unfortunately, in this case, pride has no place in this picture. It is mounted and framed by theMoney-is-Everything Company. Money controls so much of each ofour lives, in various ways. I dont know about you, but it appalls methat we have allowed it to taint in this manner a sport loved by somany. Classify tournaments to give lesser-skilled players a venue;this promotes the sport. Do not participate in selective discriminationagainst the very thing we all spend thousands of hours striving for excellence.-- Mary Price, fearless in Helena OTB

Spokane, WAOn October 12th & 13th McQs Billiards played host to another chapterof the ever popular class C 8 ball tournament. The event attracted 48players, 9 ladies and a few under 21 players in action. The field wasvery competitive. This event also marked the first time I did not receiveany complaints about someones ability. An event without anycomplaining how strange is that. Sam Moul prevailed in the end withthe finals going two sets. His opponent was Keith Hanson fromBrewster, Washington. Keith won the first set 5-4 but Sam came backand nailed down a 5-0 win in the second set. Thanks again to all thatplayed and well see you next time.

The Mini-Buffer is a great way to keep your balls cleanand your game at its best. It is ideal for home use, poolrooms, bars, clubs and even a large prestigeous eventlike the 2002 U S Open 9-Ball Championships! The Mini-Buffer crew cleaned the balls for the championshipstwice a day and only took about 10 minutes to clean theballs of all 18 tournament tables. This portable cleaner goes right to the table. All you do ispour a capful of the cleaner/polisher in a large zip lockstorage bag, put in 8 balls and coat them, let the balls sitfor a few minutes wiping off any excess cleaner, thenthree at a time place them in the Mini-Buffer. The buffingpad is attached toa cordlessdrill and theballs arebuffed forabout 5secondsand theyare done! The greatthing about this isthe cleaner/polisher only needs to be applied every 3 to4 cleanings. Its quick, easy and goes where you need it. I tested thisproduct in my neighborhood bar and was amazed athow quick and easy it was to clean a set of balls, andwhat a good job the Mini-Buffer did.The Mini-Buffer weighs only 2 pounds, comes with a 4ounce bottle of cleaner polisher, drill attachment, woolbuffing pad with Velco attachment and a terry cloth pad.The Mini-Buffer retails for $59.95 plus $7.95 shippingand handling. Extra 4 oz. bottles of Cleaner/Polisher are$5 each and replacement pad set are $7.50. Call oremail The Break if you are interested in purchasing thisproduct. See ad page 20

STATE OF THE GAMEMost of this will come as no surprise to some of you, but maybe it

will enlighten you as to the state of pool in Montana. There are people inthis state that resent the fact that someone is better than they are. Ratherthan use this to their advantage and get better, they whine about it. Theyuse phrases like NO MASTER PLAYERS or INVITATION ONLY to limitwho plays and who doesnt.

When I moved back into this state after being gone for 5 yearsthere were a number a guys dominating the tournament scene. Names

like: Kohm, Hamper, Oliver,DeRoeck, & Smith were always atthe top of the board. One statechampionship after another.Tournaments wins everywhere.Doubles, singles, it didnt matter. They were IT around here.

But no one ever said Theyruin tournaments, dont let them playat all. Not once did I ever hearsomething like Oh great, Jerry &Bob are here, were all playing forsecond. These guys wererespected for how good they played. They were looked up to by others.

Kind of a measuring stick for the rest of us to judge ourselves by.And something happened over the next couple of years, the

players started getting better. Traveling to tournaments and seeking outthe better players began to pay off. Soon a new breed of player camealong. Names like: Olsen, Stanchfield and Boucher were showing up ontop of the boards. These were the guys who took advantage of the betterplayers and learned from them. They showed up to lose because theyrealized that was the only way to get better.

It seems to me that about every 5 to 7 years the names change. Some of the names remain, but overall its the new ones you hear most.About 15 to 20 years ago the names were McGowen, Johnson, Gray,Quande, Christensen, Saunders & T. Boucher, but you heard aboutplayers like DeRoeck, Kohm, Oliver.

But something has changed, the list of new players is growingshort. There are players out there who dont complain and show up tolearn and watch. Hey, its what I did for 3 years before I tasted victory. Butthere arent that many any more. Not like 10 years ago.

On Sunday at any given decent tournament, it was packed. Iremember the finals of the 1993 Traynor Memorial tournament in Buttewhen Kohm & DeRoeck beat Stanchfield & Boucher. Standing room only. There was hardly enough room to play. There were 36 teams and a waitinglist of another 20. Last year there were 24 teams and only about 10people, including the players, watching the finals. What happened?

It appears to me that the majority of players either dont want topay their dues or dont like the idea that they might lose. I have someshocking news for them. Unless they show up to play, they will never beany better than they are now. By paying dues I mean getting beat. I tookplenty of beatings when I was learning. I put my fair share of entry fees inother players pockets. But now I happen to be reaping the rewards of allthose losses. To learn what it takes to beat the better players you have toplay them first. To a man, I cannot think of a top player in this state thatis not willing to help anybody get better. I myself will answer any questionsand sometimes even help my opponent out while playing the match. Iwould like to see the other players in this state get better because thatwould make me better. And if my years of playing have taught me anything,it is that there is always someone better.

I was once told, The only thing you learn by winning is that youplay good enough to win. Think about it.

Im invited to play in a WPBA eventin New York City. Even I was inshock at first. After the whole ideaset in it was time to get to work onflights and rooms and all that goeswith a trip of this magnitude. Itsbeen about ten years since Ivebeen to the big apple and the lasttime was for a WPBA event, and Idid not fare well that time. NewYork is a Mecca for pool. Straightpool events have always been bigthere and the idea of going is tosay the least scary, butreservations are made entries arepaid and roommates have beensecured. I got lucky, the most used poolphrase, is how it all started. I foundanother person to share a cab fromNewark. That was $80.00 whenyou add in tolls and tunnels andrush hour. I arrive at the bed andbreakfast brownstone that Imstaying at and it is cute as a button. Its just like being at home exceptthat Im on the 4th floor and thereare no elevators. So Im sure toget in my exercise every day thatIm here. I take a cab uptown tothe Amsterdam billiard club and likemagic Im in my naturalenvironment again. Down into thebasement and tables everywhere, they are just setting up the arenaarea for the event and all arehustling around with last minutepreparations. The managers andcrew are very friendly and knowthat ladies coming in are most likelyplayers. They find me coffee anda table and set me right to work atgetting a feel for the beautiful goldcrowns that we will be playing on.

New York and Poolby: Julie Hunter

Later in the day, we have a playersmeeting and draw and we knowthat play starts in the morning. Myfirst draw is another player fromyears back, Jean Valincourt, whohas not played in a big event in along time either. I lose to her onThursday afternoon and dont playagain till 10 am Friday. My matches Friday went muchbetter. I played well and beat JanMcWorter early. Then at 3, I playone of the hottest young players,Angel Paglia, and win anothermatch that even gets me intomoney. Im thrilled to death.I have another match at 10 pm so Igo to my room, rest, change, eatand head back to the poolroom fora match with Stacy Hurst. I playedwell to start and was ahead 3 to 0but it was not to be. At some pointI leaned over a shot and saw stars.Heck Im almost 50 and its been along two days already.I was never the same and lost thematch. Now its time for me to be atourist, see the sights and go backwith some pictures. I keep tellingthe ladies on my tour that theseevents are a lot of work but I guessyou have to attend one to realizehow much. But it sure is fun to seeall the pros that do this every monthand keep on. My hat goes off tothem for all the work they do topromote the game and themselves. So Im back home now, and stillgetting caught up on my real job, which is to make a poolroomhomey for all those players thatlove the game as much as I do andto make it fun for every one thatplays.

included such perks as polishing balls between every match! In addition, Jonathangraciously added $750 to the prize purse and announced his commitment to nextyears season by committing to host the NWPA year-end tournament with awhopping $1,500 added. The tournament made for a most exciting weekend. The top two finishers areseasoned players of the game both have played in pro events and both displayedtremendous drive and focus over the weekend. Long-standing local player, Linda

Carter of Kent,WA, started offthe weekend witha frustrating lossto Sara Schwefel[4-7]. Perhaps itwas the thought ofa quick out on theB-side (race tofive) or maybe ittook her firstmatch to get herinto gear.Whichever thecase, Linda Carterplowed her waythrough the entireB-side to reachthe finals! Sheshowed greatstamina andfocus as she

weaved her way through B-side matches against Kathy Iwata [5-3], Tamré Geené-Rogers [5-2], Kendra McCoulier [5-1], Natalie Wiita [5-4], Emily Pham [5-3], KimSijer [5-2] Deby Welfringer [5-1],Katherine Czarkowski [5-4] and MonaRemedios [5-4]. She then had to facethe winner of the A side, Mary Hopkin, for the finals; a race to 7 for the first setand a race to 5 in the second.Another top player and no stranger topro-events either, Mary Hopkin ofRichland, WA arrived at the tournamentwith amazing resolve and focus. Marykicked off the entire weekend in thezone and remained there as shedominated the A side with steady winsover Julie Valdez [7-2], Carol Mellors [7-3], Heather Doherty [7-1], KatherineCzarkowski [7-5], Deby Welfringer [7-5]and Mona Remedios [7-5].The finals promised to be a most interesting match with these two veteran playersgoing head to head both dominating their respective sides of the board theentire weekend. The scores proved most exciting with Mary starting set 1 off witha 2-0 lead over Linda. Linda then battled back to a 3-2 lead over Mary who, in kind, returned the favor to move the score in herfavor again at 5-3. Linda didnt let the stronglead sway her and bore down to win the next4 games for a first set win over Mary 7-5. Withsuch a lengthy string of wins, it appeared set2 of the finals was mentally dominated by Lindaas she kicked it off with impressive runs atthe table to a 2-0 lead over Mary. It was thenMary who dug deep to play some great safeshots against Linda to put herself on the board. She followed it immediately with a winning 9-ball break to tie up the score. Nerves andstamina began to fray for both players as theystarted trading short innings at the table withnumerous missed opportunities. Despite this,it was Linda who managed to hold it alltogether and cash in on her opportunities, resulting in a 5-3 victory over Mary. Herreward for her endeavors: an impressive $529 and 200 tour points, which put her in5th place overall for the 2002 season. The NWPA will close out the 2002 season with an 8-ball tournament at TheHalftime Bar & Grill in Vancouver, WA, November 9-10. This event is only opento NWPA members who have won less than $150 [excluding consolationtournament winnings]. A minimum of $500 will be added guaranteed. competitive by each person playing. Some of the best pool was played, ofany tournament, anywhere.Probably the best of the rest was the match between Glenn Atwell andTony Balzas. Both are top Northwest players. Tony handled Glenn withsome of the most flawless play ever. Actually, Glenn never had muchopportunity to get to the table offensively. Tony bested Glenn to put him onthe losers side. Glenn worked his way back with an emphatic win overRussell Cearcy and the 2nd chance at Tony in the finals. It was instantreplay of the first time around for Glenn and a second place finish. Tonywon the Masters Singles title and definitely played the solidest of a verytough field. This young man has a tremendous future in competitive billiards.Congra tu la t ionsTony! On the Womensside, Josie Leroy isa tough, up-comingLady poolplayer fromNewberg, Oregon, who gave BarbaraThompson ofVancouver, WA atough time for theLadies Masters title.Barbara is a verysolid player, with asmooth stroke, known to be very

confidently, eased to the seven, moved the cue ball down the table to the eight, popped in the eight and finished off the game with an easy shot on the nine.

He led one game to none.I WAS OVERCOME BY A CONSUMING, DEBILITATING heat within me. Howcould I be so stupid, I thought? At least make him work for it, Keating! Gadwelldoesnt need any help from you. What a stupid childish mistake.

Suddenly I felt humiliated. The great Keating, the kid prodigy. Yeah, come a long way alright. Ha, ha, ha. Look at the incredible, unbeatable kid now.Keating, whats changed? Youre still the laughing stock at Willies.

Eddy Cooksey racked the balls as Gadwell stepped to the table. AfterCooksey nodded, Gadwell with tightly pursed lips jacked his stick back andlaunched it forth like a rifle shot. The cue ball slammed dead center into therack. Miraculously, after going through a radical rendition of bumper pool, itstayed on the table. Though rattled by almost every ball on the table, it finallybraked inches from the upper corner pocket.

The crowd gasped. Four balls were left on the table. Five had droppedinto the pockets. Including the nine.

Gadwell led two games to none. Oh, God! No!Gadwell lopped onto mistakes like a spider on its prey within its deadly

web. On top of that he was a notorious momentum player. Given the force of hisbreak he had the capacity to run five, six games without giving his opponent ashot.

Suddenly, my stomach started rumbling. I felt nauseous. My head startedspinning.

Be right back, I whispered numbly to Charley Sturgis. While Eddy Cooksey racked the balls, I leaned my cue stick against my

chair and crossed the room to the mens room. Once inside, I opened a stalldoor, dipped my head into the john and puked my guts out. I stayed there. Howcould I do such an idiotic thing? My God, how was I going to win a game?Keating the prodigy, the laughing-stock of the entire city.

Its all in your head, son, intervened a suddenly silent whisper. Asthough Charley Sturgis was in the stall with me. The voice continued, Until youhandle the battle in your head youll never be a great player. Lifting my headfrom the toilet seat, I suddenly stared into nothingness and looked around. I wasalone. The wall before me seemed like a huge movie screen playing vivid colorfulpictures almost as if I was in a trance.

Stay focused, Carter, the voice prodded. Direct all that passion, allthat energy into what youre doing. Discipline your mind, Carter. Set the stage, endure, and play your best. Win the battle with yourself. Thats the real battle,Carter.

The hunter green stalls and faded yellow walls suddenly came into focus, and I looked around me. Now a centeredness welled up inside me. And I becameangry in a different way.

I let it consume me.Rising off my knees, I wiped my mouth and flushed the toilet then opened

the door and went to the sink and gargled and washed my face. I looked in themirror and brushed my full dark hair. This was the mental block that Charley hadtalked about, and outside a few feet away was the opportunity Id dreamed about, planned on and thought about. I drew in a huge breath and looked at myself inthe mirror then exhaled slowly and smiled.

The time had come to break through the wall. Turning, I unlocked thedoor, breathed in deep and stepped back through. With shoulders back, my longframe strolled to the table. Out of the corner of my eye, a somewhat familiartrench coated figure moved away from me, lost quickly in the back of the crowd. For a fleeting moment I wondered who it might be.

Thought youd fallen in, Tools Spinard yelled out cynically. The place burst out laughing.A smile washed across my face as I looked at Jimmy, the Stick, Gadwell,

and said, Sorry about the delay, Stick. Scared me so much, I lost my innards. He looked at me, thought about what Id said for a moment then leaned

in to the table and set for the next break. Without hesitation, he reared back andbrought the cannon home again. And again, as before, he exploded the rack.

Nothing much changed. The nine ball went into the hole again.Gadwell led three games to none.Hoots and whistles roared from the upside bettors, while groans and

sighs poured out from the losers. Gadwell grinned broadly. If theyd turned offthe lights, hed have lit up the place like a light bulb.

Rackem, I barked to Eddy Cooksey. Before he cools off.Leaning back in my chair, I whispered to Charley Sturgis, Hes on a roll.Sturgis glanced at me just enough to catch my eye, and then said, Had

a talk with yourself, eh?I grinned. Yeah, had a visit with the ghost of Charley Sturgis. They havent put me in the grave yet, son, he said warmly.Thank God for that, I gasped, then pushed off my chair and went over

to the Stick. He narrowed his eyes and looked at me suspiciously. Yeah, kid, whats

up?Leaning in to him, I muttered quietly, Stick, it suddenly occurred to me

that Im in the presence of greatness. He grinned. Youll live through it, kid, he said cockily.Uh huh, I muttered, while chalking my cue. Listen, Stick, if you shut

me out, Ill put an extra hundred in your pocket. Plus, Ill bow down before you infront of the whole frigging crowd.

He jerked back and eyed me like Id just escaped out of the nut house.Youre my hero, Stick, I intoned, so dont disappoint me. Then I

grinned, turned my back on him, and went back to my seat next to CharleySturgis.

Ask him for a date? Charley jibed.Just taking care of the things I have control over, I replied.Uh huh. He turned his eyes toward the counter. Better bring me a

refill, Honey, he said to Jacqie. Looks like its going to be a long night.Something inside spoke to me in a way Id longed for, and that something

told me Charley was right. Relaxing, I settled back in my chair and waited for achance. I knew at some point, before this night was over, the opportunity wouldcome.

On October 5th and 6th Evergreen Division of The Association For Pool,Inc.(TAP) had a total of 15 teams competing to go to Nationals. Five teamsin each division battled it out and even though we were going to be sendinga total of six teams (two per division) we are only sending five teams. Whyyou may ask? We had one team competing in all three divisions and twoother teams competing in two divisions. Therefore this doubled theirchances in going to Nationals. Out of those teams only one team rose tothe occasion and qualified in both the 2nd & 3rd Place Divisions (HouseSticks) and we would like to take this time to say congratulations to allteams that are going and wish them the best of luck. SCOTT BERNARD: Im one of the top bar boxplayers in Portland and have enough ability andexperience on the 9 footers to stand with mostplayers. I was fortunate enough to begin my poolplaying experience being sponsored by JimmyG., because of that I got a lot of attention andquality instruction from the top local players. Ihave gone to the major tournaments. I haveexposure and know what pool can look like whenits played on a world class level. For me this isan easy matter. Lance McGill is the best poolplayer that I have ever seen. Thats all I want tosay.JIMMY G-I know every modern player. Not fromtapes or what Ive heard. I know them and Iknow what the problem here may well become.Lance McGill is happy where he is and wont goout of his way to prove any of this. Him provingit to you or for you is none of my business. Iwant to tell you what I know and what Ive seen, most importantly that I saw it for 3 years straightEVERY NIGHT. He was not in the zone. Helives there- that means that often I was watchingthis level of play for 2-3 months straight eachand every night! He would go out of town for afew days and when he returned he got right backto work. When he worked he was there frombefore open to close. He had a key and wouldusually be there when I arrived and it would berare that he left before I did. This man wasgiving it 12-16 hoursevery day. One day hewas breaking andracking when I arrived.Breaking, looking atthe result and thenrack and break again. It was about 11amwhen I arrived; at 2amhe was still breakingand racking. He wasdoing a job. He would send someone next doorfor Chinese food and stop to eat, make a fewjokes with us, and then right back to work. Thatlevel of work is unheard of and what makes itworse is this: he already had, by far, the mostpowerful and effective break I had seen in mylife! And from there he saw fit to do that level ofwork! I may be the only poolroom owner in thehistory of poolrooms to go over and ask a playerto please take a little off of that break? Thatwas on the gold crown with a light right above. When he was working on table #6 where thelight was in the ceiling he would hit the ceilingover and over until he wanted to stop and usethe gold crown. One day I asked him to not hitmy ceiling anymore and he never did it again. He was also considerate enough to put a swatchof billiard cloth under the cue ball to save wearon my cloth. I sat and asked him about the breakthat day and he showed me. When I breakJimmy, if I get to play the one ball here next [hepoints to the lower left hand pocket] Im out. Hedid it a few times including the run out and thenhe broke and showed me the one ball next inTHAT corner. He was making between 3 and 5balls on the break and just pointed to the obviousout. And he did it over and over again. Anybodycould win with that break. The more fascinatingthing is that all of his students have more

powerful breaks than the rest of us so he canalso teach it. The rest of this is easy and Iveseen people and students of his argue this untilthey were blue. I doubt that they will have thatargument with me. Varner, Sigel, Strickland,Archer, whoever you want to name- LanceMcGill has the most powerful stroke in the gameof pool, the most accurate and the mostpowerful. If you have questions I am knownand easy to find-COMMENTARY: I agreed to all of this becauseI want you to listen. I want you to use theworkouts that I designed. The stroke andaccuracy youre hearing about here is the resultof some things. I want to offer you those thingsand have you succeed from their use. Those ofyou that do the work will have a like result. Ifpool is not your life and you can only work at it alimited amount of hours you will still have theopportunity to gain more power and accuracythan most. The first thing I recommend is thatyou spend some of your practice time on abilliard table. You need not be proficient justhave the basic understanding. There is ofcourse a limit to the percentage of your timethat is useful and you can email me for help indeciding how much time you should spend onbilliards and the other things that follow. Andwhile were discussing billiard balls, when youwant to gain an understanding of the kind of

stroke you need formonster draw- use abilliard ball with aregular sized objectball; then when youhave that, use thebilliard cue ball and asnooker object ball;and from this you willhave the monsterdraw. After some daily

work on the billiard table go to the 9 ball break. This is the fastest and most effective way to gofrom warming up to in stroke. You will besurprised at how well this works.I didnt design it, I noticed that after my powerbreak workouts that I was playing immediatelyin dead stroke when I moved to the next step:after the 9 ball break workout I go to working onmy high run in straight pool. Find the high runthat you can do daily and make it happen. Beginwith the standard 14.1 stack shot. [Ask anyplayer or find it in a book on straight pool.] Nextis what I call the island exercise. Place the 15balls randomly on the table with every ball atleast 10 inches away from the rails. Take cueball in hand and run the rack having the cueball never reach a rail. If this was all you did for2-3 weeks, if it was all of the pool that you playedduring that time you would begin seeing patternsthat you may not ever see no matter how longyou shoot pool. This exercise will also allowyou to develop uncanny sense of touch and feelfar far ahead of schedule. For high top or power follow see me next monthor email to get it in advance. If you are relativelynew to pool and want to learn please come in,otherwise please leave me here quiet andpeaceful. Somebody do the work.Lance McGill --- The Pool Whisperer

The Pool Whisperer (continued from page 7)

The first thing Irecommend is that youspend some of yourpractice time on abilliard table.

By: Tom Dr. Cue Rossman

On October 9 and 10, 2002eight of the greatest artistic poolspecialists in the world emerged at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore, MD. Thismagnetic host of superstars embraced the twists, turns, dips, and divesof the round spheres, along with an assortment of propnoveltiesstrategically placed across the green blaze. The highly spiritedlist of competitors included Mike Massey, Stefano Pelinga, SebastianGiumelli, Ray Allard, Gerry Watson, Steve Geller, Charles Darling and, finally,Tom Dr. Cue Rossman from Indiana was making an ESPN debut in hisunique table trotter style. Matt Braun Productions had set the stage for what would prove to besome of the closest matches in the history of this highly rated TVpresentation. The format would be similar to horse in basketball. Oneplayer would choose a shot for a hopeful 1 point score, if made, while hisopponent would have an equal chance of scoring a critical point for thesame shot. Both players would have 2 attempts at each challenge. A totalof 12 shots would be chosen by each playerthus offering a few surpriseselections in a strategic plan of calculated moves by each champion. And,surprisesurprise would be the name of this game in more ways thanone!! Pelinga and Rossman would play for the title, glory, and the $25,000first place prize. All was in place for a flavorful night of competitive spiritand audience enjoyment, Rossman once again took an early lead, butPelinga narrowed the gap. The score was tied with 1 challenge left.Rossman chose the starburst shot (15 balls in 3 pockets in 5 rapid firecue movements). Perfect! Pelinga missed, so the score stood at 11 - 10,with one shot left for Pelinga to present. A new masse never before seenby Rossman was Pelingas choice. Both attempts by Pelinga fell short oftheir target, assuring Rossman of the victory!! The debut of Dr. Cue onESPN turned into a special blessingwith this victorious moment. Theprayers for burning focus and wisdom in this unique format of shotselection were answered. Positions of finish with corresponding prize money were as follows: 1st

$25,000, 2nd $5000, 3rd & 4th $2000 each, and 5th thru 8th $1500each. A custom Viking Cue engraved with 2002 ESPN Trick Shot MagicChampion was presented to Dr. Cue as an additional prize. Watch forthe upcoming ESPN schedule of TV releases for this historic event.ENJOY!!
