n October 11-17, 2011 the 14th Annual Western BCA Regional 9-Ball Championships were hosted at Chinook Winds Casino & Resort in Lincoln City, Oregon. Players from Washington, Oregon and Idaho converged at what is fondly called “Da Beach” to compete

for their share of over $75,000 in prize money. While Western BCA volunteers organized the event, Bad Boys Productions set up the 80 Diamond Pool Tables and tracked all results both on the paper brackets that lined the halls and the online brackets available at www.ctsondemand.com. A moment of silence was held for former Western BCA volunteer Alex Stroup, who succumbed to lymphoma on May 28, 2011. Many players who knew him well dedicated their performance to him. Western BCA dedicated the tournament to his memory and extends their love to his family. The stage was set for the best competition in the Northwest. Forty-six teams signed up for Master Scotch Doubles and top prize was $1950. With payouts only including the top of the field, competition was fierce. The only restriction teams faced was that only one Grand Master was allowed per team. In a race-to-6 format, alternating break, both teams needed to start out strong to increase their odds of victory. Out of the 46 teams, only one team had jointly claimed the title previously, and they were defending champions Mike Stevens and Cindy Doty. After a fifth round loss to Glenn Atwell/Shari Ross, their hopes of a repeat performance were dashed by national grandmaster Dan Louie and 1st year regional master Jessica Orth. Louie/Orth would go on to defeat their next opponents Seal/Olson, but then came up short when Atwell/Ross, fresh off their hot seat loss to Violette/Jensen, ground out a gutsy hill-hill nail biter to earn their spot in the final. The first set of the final would also go hill-hill, but this time in favor of Violette/Jensen, who after earning their first titles as Masters, were surrounded by friends and fellow competitors in celebration of their brilliant breakthrough performance.

CINDERELLA SPOTLIGHT: Both Leo Violette and Angela Jensen were playing in their first event as regional masters. Leo won the Open A Singles and Angela took 4th place in the Women’s Open Singles at the Western BCA’s Regional 8 Ball Championships in March. Neither player had any sort of expectations about their performance; however, the way in which they maintained their composure against some of the toughest players in the region, expect to see more titles to come their way. Congratulations to you both!

Open Scotch Doubles featured 83 couples and a top prize of $1550. The final four teams on the A side included McDonald/Adams, Coomes/Sleight, Desmarais/Pridgen, and Fenn/Karpins. Jackson McDonald and Robin Adams continued their strong play defeating Coomes/Sleight, while Fenn/Karpins

defeated Desmarais/Pridgen. McDonald/Adams then defeated Fenn/Karpins 5-1 to earn their spot in the final. The final four teams on the B side included Anderson/Beach, Hostak/Morfin, Nguyen/Hughes, and Cadena/Wilson.

Hostak/Morfin advanced through the B side of the board, surviving three hill-hill matches and one 5-3 match to earn their shot at the title. Jackson McDonald/Robin Adams had other plans as they defeated Dennis Hostak/Faith Morfin 5-0 in the first set to earn their first scotch doubles title. Great shooting! Seventy players signed up for Men’s Masters and top prize was $1250. Only eight players made it to the final board. On the A side Clark Smith vs. Rick Copeland and Miguel Morfin vs. Eddie Carrido. Rick and Eddie both continued on the A side to battle it out for the hot seat, which Eddie won 8-4. Dillon Standley defeated Miguel Morfin to earn a spot in the B side finals. Rick, too, was determined to earn a rematch against Eddie, and ended up defeating Dillon 8-3 to play in his first Master singles final. Rick was shooting well and defeated Eddie in the first set of this true double elimination final. He appeared to be in position to close out the second set as well; however, Rick sat on the hill, 7-3 in a race to 8, as Eddie rallied back to tie the set at 7. With Eddie winning the flip for the second set, he would break in

the final game. Eddie broke and pocketed a ball. With an extremely tough backcut

on the 1, Eddie opted for a 1-9 carom shot on the 9, which he made to win the match and top prize. Thirty-seven ladies signed up in the Master division and the top prize was $950. The final four ladies on the A side included Shawn Wolf vs. Susan Preston and Suzanne Smith vs. Jessica Orth. Shawn and Suzanne defeated their opponents 7-5 and 7-3 to advance to the hot seat match, which Suzanne won in her closest match of the event 7-6. The remaining ladies on the B side included Barb Thompson vs. Regene Lane (first time Western BCA participant) and Shari Ross vs. Jo Woodward. Barb and Shari would continue in the event, defeating their opponents 7-4 and 7-3. Barb would continue on to defeat Susan, and then Jessica (fresh off her win over Shari.) The only thing in between Barb and another shot at a title was Shawn. Shawn played great and defeated Barb 7-4 to earn a rematch against Suzanne in the final. It was a true double elimination format, so Shawn would need to beat Suzanne twice. Suzanne took an early 4-1 lead, but then faltered when

The Grand Masters Challenge Division was created to give the top 8 men and women Grand Masters and Masters in Western BCA a tougher challenge with a Round-Robin format tournament. At this Regional event, the men played 10-Ball and the women played 9-Ball. The players played sets of 8 games, with the scores tallied at the end. After 3 days of stellar shooting and grueling safety battles, Liz Cole rose above the ladies’ field and Glenn Atwell topped the men’s division to capture the titles of Grand Masters Challenge Champions.

It was Liz Cole who came out on top after the first day. Her opponents noticed her exceptional play early on, with her amazing combos and awesome run-outs, and they knew she would definitely be the one to catch at the end. 2011 8-Ball GMC Champion Linda Carter came within 3 points of catching Liz, but was unable close the gap. In a show of gracious sportsmanship, Linda presented Liz with her beautiful glass Championship trophy.

Likewise on the Men’s side, Glenn Atwell started out strong and never let up as he charged to his pending victory. His steady stroke, calm demeanor and deadly accuracy gave him a strong lead. Dan Louie, who won the Men’s GMC at the 2011 8-Ball Championships, made a valiant attempt to surpass Glenn in points, but fell short by 4 points. In an equally impressive example of sportsmanship, Dan Louie presented Glenn with his Championship trophy.

Western BCA and all of the Grand Masters wish to thank Tiger for their sponsorship and generous donation of a cue stick for a raffle. Scott Virgin of Cherry City League won that raffle drawing. Congratulations Scott! And, Congratulations to our Grand Masters Champions, Liz Cole and Glenn Atwell!!

a position error and a poorly executed safety allowed Shawn to get within 1 game. At 4-3, Suzanne and Shawn exchanged racks, neither lady able to get an edge. That 4th game was the last that Shawn would get, as Suzanne played consistently to run out the final two racks from the 5 and the 4 to earn her first Master Singles Title. One hundred and eight players signed up in the Men’s Open A Division and top prize was $1000. On the A side, Greg Odal played John Brown for the hot seat. Both players had been shooting extremely well. Greg survived three consecutive hill-hill matches prior to the A side final, while John had dispatched his opponents by a larger margin. Greg shot with determination and sent John to the B side by a score of 7-3. On the B side, Phong Nyugen played Roy Garza to earn a spot in the B side final. Phong defeated Roy handily to advance. Phong, who had received his first loss from Greg (hill-hill) a couple rounds earlier, then succumbed to John by the same score. The final was a rematch of the hot seat, with a similar outcome. Greg shot with great determination and focus defeating John in the first set, 7-2. Welcome to the Masters Division, guys! One hundred and forty-four players entered the Men’s Open B Division and top prize was $750. On the A side, match ups were Brent Kirschenmann vs. Chap Cook and Gary Lewis vs. Mayolo Munoz. Brent and Gary defeated their opponents to square off for the hot seat. Brent then defeated Gary 6-3 to earn his spot in the finals. On the B side, Scott Perry played Paul Bennett and Larry Nathan played Dave Avegio. Scott and Dave both advanced through their matches 6-2 and 6-5, respectively. Chap and Mayolo were eager for redemption and handed Scott and Dave their walking papers 6-4 and 6-0. Chap then defeated Mayolo 6-4 and Gary 6-5 to earn his spot in the final against Brent. Brent was fiercely determined to earn the title and did not let Chap have a game in the first set, winning top prize by the score of 6-0. Welcome to the Open A, gentlemen!Ninety-eight ladies signed up for the Open event and top prize was $775. Topping the A side, Bernie Foster vs. Rebecca Easley and Kathy Stanley vs. Sara Moore fought to play for the point. Rebecca and Kathy both survived hill-hill battles to earn a shot at the hot seat. Both ladies shot well; however, Kathy edged out Rebecca 6-4. On the B side, final board match ups included Julie Stallings vs. Michelle Hughes and Suwanna Kroll vs. Lynda Moore. Michelle and Suwanna both defeated their opponents, and it seemed that momentum from their wins carried them through their next rounds, where Michelle defeated Sara and Suwanna defeated Bernie. Michelle then played Suwanna and defeated her as well to earn a spot against Rebecca in the B side final. Rebecca was hungry for a rematch with Kathy and defeated Michelle 6-3 to advance. The first set of the final was an epic battle, when tied at 5-5, Kathy made the 9-Ball on the break to win the set and earn the title. Great job ladies and welcome to the Masters!Thirty-six men signed up for the Senior Singles event and the top prize was $440. The A side final four include matchups of Owen Miller vs. Bill Ruddick and Vernon Joe vs. Mike Knight. Owen and Vernon both advanced through their matches 6-5 and 6-3, respectively. Vernon shot with amazing intensity and defeated Mike 6-0 to earn a rematch in the final against Owen. Owen, however, had plans of his own and with consistent shotmaking and safety play defeated Vernon 6-0 in the first set to earn his Senior Singles Title. The tournament finished off with the three team divisions: Women’s Team, Men’s/Mixed Team and a brand new division, Men’s/Mixed Open B Team. Men’s/Mixed Team started with 102 teams fighting for a $3,000 1st place payday. Men’s/Mixed Teams are allowed 1 Master or Grand Master per team. Little Dutch Inn (Tim Desmarais, Clayton Foran and Nick Lopez) a team of all OPEN A players, punished many of those teams with a Master, on their way to an final 14-7 victory over Lloyd’s Team (Joe Landi, Brent Langley and Stan Tourangeau). The new division, Men’s/Mixed Open B Teams, featured 40 teams for its first time and Probable Cause (Dave Mackey, Jose Velasquez and David Zelany) started winning and never looked back. Facing team Egitserp (Prestige spelled backward--Paul Bennett, Brent Kirschenmann, Martin Seguin and Steve Kesting) in the finals, Probable Cause continued their streak defeating Egitserp 11-9, winning $825. The Women’s Team event whittled 48 teams down to the final 2 on Sunday. The Gatekeepers (Michelle Barkdoll, Faith Morfin, and Andrea Saenz-Maes) played strong and consistent to make their way to the finals. Like the Men’s Teams, the Open players in this final really stepped up their game; Andrea attributes their wins to Faith and Michelle. The Gatekeepers emerged victorious over Marco… (Shari Ross, Talya Makus, and Kathy Stanley), and earned $1,710 by beating them with a score of 11-7.

2011 US Open LeSSOnSLast time I pointed out that you could learn a lot as a spectator with the safety play of Rafael Martinez as an example. I took my own advice and went to the 2011 US Open 9-Ball Tournament in Virginia this October. There were many great matches and I picked up a move or two.In the diagram is a safety that I saw Stefan Cohen from France play. I thought he would play the tough cut on the 7, but instead he perfectly executed this safety shot, leaving both the 7 and the cue ball tight against the cushions. This is the sort of speed control of both balls you tend to find with one pocket experts, but in Cohen’s case I suspect it is from his experience with carom games in which you need to control the speed of all the balls. Cohen is also the former world champion at straight pool.If you see one guy wearing lime green shoes, it’s an aberration or maybe insanity but if you see a dozen, it’s a St. Patrick’s Day parade. Later in the tournament I saw other examples of this safety, so maybe it will be worth your time to practice this shot.Note that against typical room players, even if the 9 was not there as a blocker the safe would still be effective as long as the shot is left straight in since a successful table-length draw is not likely. This comes under the heading of leaving shots your opponent might make but is very unlikely to run out from. I’ve been on both sides of that proposition.Another more common safe is shown with the letters. Suppose the

7 is gone and the 8 is the next ball in this position. By hitting about half the 8 on the left side you can put the 8 at B and the cue ball at A. Be sure to get the cue ball as close as possible to the cushion to make your opponent’s cueing harder.Another thing to be noted from this Open was the critical importance of the break shot. Or maybe not. In the match between Darren Appleton and Alex Pagulayan -- the eventual winner and the third place finisher -- in the first 11 racks the breaker won only 3 times. Appleton won the last 7 racks in a row to take the match but only 2 of the racks were break and runs. Championship play is rarely a series of run outs, especially with the relatively small pockets of the Diamond tables.Perhaps the longest string in the Open was by Jason Klatt from Canada who put an unbroken 7-pack on Darren, but Darren managed to claw back for the win. The breaking rule was rack-your-own, break from “the box” (within a diamond of the head spot) and get three balls past the side pockets. In winning the race-to-13 finals, Appleton broke 13 times and made the wing ball (the outer ball on the side he broke from) 12 times. That’s what happens when you have a tight rack. On the other hand, Darren’s opponent in the finals, Shawn Putnam, broke 6 times and made the wing ball only twice. Inexplicably, Putnam broke from the

left side all the time while Appleton was having his success from the right side.I hope I’ve convinced you to get out more and see what’s going on. The next major event in this area is the Mosconi Cup, which will be in Las Vegas December 7-11. I hope to see you there. I’m the guy with the briefcase and notebook -- say hello.

The Monk’s Nine Ball RulesBY THE MONK

COVERING SUBJECTS THAT ARE NOT WRITTEN ABOUT

I am working on a project that involves the game of nine ball. Most of the masters will not share the vital concepts that are so important about this game. I promise you, this project will cover subjects that are not written about. The reason they won’t share this information with you is because it took to much sweat and effort to gain the knowledge. They simply do not want to give it away. I hope to have this work completed by mid November. Let’s establish The Monk’s Nine Ball Rules. 1. The break is the most important shot in this game. You must respect this opening shot. Your pre shot routine and thought process must be consistent on each and every break. The cue tip on the cue ball must be precise. The aiming must be accurate and the stroke must deliver the cue ball with deadly accuracy and with clear intentions on where the balls are going. The speed you use is vital. Stroke, speed and aiming point are critical parts of a good nine ball break. I charge two hundred dollars for a three hour session on the nine ball break. It would be good money spent. 2. You must master the nine ball foundation material. I give you a series of shots and strokes and a score sheet. Work on this until you can reach the level of advanced nine ball player. You must understand, if you cannot consistently pocket these foundation shots you will fail to reach the top level status in nine ball. It is as simple as that. The shots in the game of nine ball come up all the time. I set up a complete series of shots that will enable you to finish your run outs and win more games. Email me and I will send you ten of these foundational shots FREE of charge. 3. There is no such thing as an easy shot in nine ball. The entire shot sequence must be mastered on each and every shot you face. See the shot, know the stroke and shoot the shot. In nine ball it is not a matter of making the ball. You must play position and be on the right side of your next ball. You must make the ball, set up for the next shot so you can get position on the next ball. In other words, you are always thinking three balls ahead. 4. Do not make a ball when you cannot get position on the next shot. If you face a situation where you can’t get back to your next ball, play a safe. Do not play yourself into a corner. 5. Do not try to run a table when you know you have clumps and balls tied up. So often we lose the game of nine ball when we arrive at a tough shot. We knew this was going to happen and yet we still ran to this point. An example of a tough shot is a ball on the rail right next to a side pocket. That is a shot where we sell out with a bank attempt or pinch it down the rail. Pay attention to the killer balls that destroy a good nine ball game. When you are good at kicking and good at safety play, you can offer to let your opponent play himself into a corner. I have done this and ended up seeing him fail on the clump or trouble ball. Better him than me. 6. Nine ball is not about the break and run. Master the safeties found in my E book Safety Play. Don’t shoot them once. Shoot each safe a hundred times until your success rate is over 90%. Don’t come to me for backing money until you reach this success rate. 7. Play the game you are playing. Do not get ahead of yourself. Develop the I Came to Win attitude and focus on winning the game at hand. Do not get caught up in the score, or the value of winning or losing. Stay in the present and shoot the shot in front of you as a reflection of who you are. 8. Develop the ability to be a strong finisher. Run to the finish line in everything you do. Do not walk, do not hesitate do not get ahead of yourself. Be strong when it comes to the last three balls. And don’t try a low percentage shot on the eight. Be willing to play the safe required. Be patient when you are at the table. Play the game the right way. 9. Master the fine art of composure. When playing nine ball you must be composed at all times. In all shots, be composed. Be composed when walking to the table, when sitting in your chair when facing a critical shot. Simply be composed and not preoccupied with results. Be composed when you win, be composed when you lose.

Make up your mind to become a good nine ball player. Learn the strategies this great game demands. Master the moves and enjoy your time at the table. Check out my special workshop in Canton Ohio. If you would like to organize a workshop in your area, contact me at 1-603-566-6229

On October 15 & 16 the Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour (TWCWT) rolled into San Francisco for its fifth stop of 2011. Everyone was excited by the turnout (43 players) at Family Billiards, our highest this year. Six new players entered despite it being our next to last stop—another great sign regarding the Tour’s future development. We’re getting lots of positive feedback from both new and continuing players. One first time tour player told us as she was leaving, “I just think this is the coolest thing ever”.

Family Billiards’ 17 Gold Crowns were in excellent shape, freshly recovered in Simonis tournament blue cloth. The shimmed pockets on the front 4 tables were a challenge some players relished while others simply dealt with it. The room was buzzing all day and into the night as we narrowed the field to the final eight in our main event, a double elimination tournament with a race to 7 on the winners’ side and a race to 5 on the one-loss side. Last month’s winner, Eleanor Callado, made her way back to Sunday’s competition with wins over Jess Quinata, Evie Hazlett, Jaime Dizon and Carolin Koo. Twin sister Emilyn Callado joined her by defeating Kacie Ragen, A Aiem-sa-ard, Tammy Moreda, and Ginger Bowen. Bonnie Plowman also stayed on the winners’ side with victories over Jill Cheviran, Kirsten Karim, Deirdre Li, and Revelina Um. Leslie Bernardi earned her first final eight finish by remaining undefeated in matches with Shauna Madrigal, Brenda Clark, Marina Cole and Holly Robinson.

On the one-loss side, Marina Cole was also making her way to her first final eight by besting A Aiem-sa-ard, Christy Hawley, and Revelina Um. Khanh Ngo, in her first TWCWT tournament,

her first match but made it all the way to the final 8 by going on to defeat Deborah Cullen, Evie Hazlett, Dierdre Li, and Michelle Hironimous. Her first round loss was to Tour Coordinator Cony Mendoza, who found a winning strategy for this stop. Each time she came to the director’s table to pick up a Magic Rack for her next match she’d ask for a little magic. Apparently she got it because she also made the final 8 for the first time in her 3 years on the Tour. It was very refreshing to see all the new names getting into the “top 8”.The only veteran finalist who made it through from the one-loss side was Tracy Palma who ground out a hill-hill

victory over Ginger Bowen in the final match of Saturday night. Troopers both of them.

Sunday’s first round in the Main Event featured victories by Eleanor Callado over Leslie Bernardi, Emilyn Callado over Bonnie Plowman, Tracy Palma over Marina Cole and Cony Mendoza over Khanh Ngo. Alas the magic ran out for Cony in the next round as she lost to Bonnie Plowman. Leslie Bernardi won her match with Tracy Palma to become Bonnie’s next opponent; Leslie lost the match to finish in 4th place. The hot seat match pitted twins Eleanor and Emilyn Callado against each other. That match went hill-hill with Eleanor breaking and running out in the final game to win. Emilyn and Bonnie then met again as the last two players on the one-loss side. The two have played head to head a lot this year, with victories traded back and forth. This stop Em seemed to have Bonnie’s number, beating her for the second time in one day to set up a rematch with her sister Eleanor for first place. Eleanor won the first game of the final match. She never fell behind, but she never got much ahead either. In the end Eleanor prevailed 7-5. Main

Nineteen women competed in our Second Chance Tournament, a single elimination, race to five

contest. The final match had a rather unusual ending for our tour. Shawn Modelo and Deirdre Li were at hill-hill when a difficult spread of balls led to a series of safety plays on the one ball. When it was finally left in a position to be pocketed, Deirdre was sitting on two fouls. Shawn, a canny veteran and the 2011 BCA and ACS Champion in the senior women category, utilized her defensive game and was able to achieve the win by successfully three fouling Deirdre.

Our thanks to Delbert Wong, owner of Family Billiards, for his support of our tour and his long time support of women’s pool. Family Billiards added a combined $750 to our main event, second chance, and end of season prize funds. On Sunday, the name Family took on a whole new meaning with not only sisters in the finals with their mother and brother looking on, but with Delbert, his daughter Camille, his son-in-law and grandchildren all in attendance. Family and staff all give their customers a warm welcome. They also served up a wide variety of tasty food (from tamales to pot stickers to hot dogs) and draft beer in icy cold glasses.

Thanks to the generosity of our tour sponsor, Tiger Products, we were once again able to raffle off one of their low deflection cue shafts, along with shirts and accessories for the benefit of the Tour. Thanks also to Magic Rack who has donated the racks we use in our tournaments, providing our players with a consistent, tight rack every game. Eileen Hansen provided therapeutic chair massage with a portion of the proceeds benefiting our Tour. Our next and final stop will be at The Broken Rack in Emeryville on November 19 & 20. Spectators or new players are always welcome, see our website www.twcwt.com or visit us on facebook for more information. Join us in November as we wrap up an extremely fun and successful year. If you can’t join us, final eight matches will be live streamed on Sunday, Nov. 20 by westcoastpoolplayers.com.

If I were to get a private pool lesson from you, what would we work on?

This is the order that I would offer you in a private pool lesson1. Mechanics 2. Pre-shot routine 3. Shot making 4. Cue ball control 5. And much more… Each and every time, I would ask my students to write down on a blank piece of paper there pre-shot routine. Sometimes they look at me funny and say, “Well I don’t have one”. Well you need to get one… So listen up readers, this is your homework!!! Watch a pool match on ESPN or YouTube and barrow one of the top pros. Watch to see if they are consistently doing the same thing over and over. When your done please send your answers to [email protected] and you could be featured in the December issue of my publication. Lets see if you are right?

n Saturday, October 1st, Jake’s Bar & Grill hosted a nine ball tournament for women in anticipation of the upcoming Western BCA Tournament in Lincoln City. A record showing of thirty five women, fifteen of which were Master players and two Grand Masters. There were Ladies from as far north as Tacoma and Medford to the south. This was a one day event with play starting at ten

in the morning. The races were to six for the masters and to four for the open players with a $15 entry and a $5 greens fee. A generous $350 was added. Although the tournament wasn’t advertised in the newspaper, with the help of emails, face book, league operators; Randee Lee and Shawn Self, the message got out there!

I look forward to seeing so many of my friends at these tournaments twice a year. I enjoy their company so much, I don’t mind running the tournament rather than play in it. Fun, fun, fun bunch! The final day of the 36th Annual U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships concluded with a flawless performance by the explosive British player “Dynamite” Darren Appleton. He defeated Shawn Putnam in a single-set finals match with a convincing score of 13-6. Appleton is the third player in U.S. Open 9-Ball history to claim back to back titles since Mika Immonen in 2008/2009 and Nick Varner in 1989/1990.

This year, 251 players representing over 30 countries arrived to vie for the most prestigious professional billiard title on U.S. soil. Only four entered the final day where each match would now be a win-by-two format that never came into play.

The determined Brit entered the Accu-stats TV arena for his finals match sporting his patriotic England shirt with his country’s bold name and logo on the back. He had already defeated Putnam once in the first round of the finals bracket and felt confident he could do it again.

The first of only two errors by Appleton came in rack seven. While up 6-0, he scratched while playing one-rail position from the 3 to the 4 ball allowing Putnam a chance to move his first bead. He would claim that rack and two more bringing the score to 6-3 when the American fans began chanting, “USA! USA!” Putnam cracked a smirk but the cue ball found a way to the pocket on his following break.

Appleton continued his lead throughout the match keeping the cue ball on a very short leash. His patterns were simple, his speed was precise, and his pocketing was deadly. While ahead 11-5, Appleton finally missed a thin cut on the 3 ball that sold out the rack. Putnam ran a few balls but found he was

cold from the chair. He missed the 7 ball in the corner but it banked in the side two rails. He did get out but broke and scratched in the following rack. Appleton

ran that rack, then broke and ran the final rack for the match and title.

Putnam earned his second place finish defeating a number of world class players including Mosconi Cup MVP Dennis Hatch 11-2. Putnam appeared unstoppable, running the first four racks and jumping to an 8-0 lead before Hatch even won a game. The two friends bantered and even exchanged a fist pump when Hatch played a lock up safety on the 6 ball while down 8-1. Ultimately, Hatch was unable to capitalize on the rare opportunities he received and at 10-2, when Putnam got perfect on the 6 ball with four balls left on the table, he threw in the towel.

Putnam continued his tear in his next match against “The Lion” Alex Pagulayan who made a few uncharacteristic mental errors. Pagulayan received his first loss from Appleton in winner-side finals match. Both players stayed at each other’s heels until Appleton was ahead 7-6. In that rack, Appleton missed a 2 ball displaying the first possible signs of a slight mechanical breakdown. The gentlemen exchanged a few safeties until Pagulayan finally had an offensive shot at the 3 ball. As he shot it a cell phone went off in the top row leaving him with a tricky shot on the 4 ball. “I told you, only when he shoots,” said the playful lion. After much pondering, Pagulayan swung and missed the 4 in the corner. He would never regain control of the table again after that. Appleton’s break was too effective and consistent and would ultimately earn him the grand prize.

IT’S APPLETON AGAIN THE 2011 US OPEN

EVENT CONCLUDES WITH A FLAWLESS PERFORMANCE

How do you follow up your second straight US Open 9-Ball crown? If you are Darren Appleton, you follow it up with a win at the 2011 Challenge of Champions at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Ct.

This event calls for four invited players to compete in two races to five and a one game sudden death playoff if the players split the first two sets.

There was no sudden death playoff for Darren in his first match as he posted back to back 5-2 wins over World 9-Ball Champion Yukio Akakariyama.

The other semi-final match saw World 10-Ball Champion defeat Mika Immonen in a sudden death playoff after winning 5-2 and then losing 5-3.

The final match between Appleton and See did not start off well for Appleton, with See winning the first set 5-2. Appleton came back to force a tie-breaker with a 5-2 win of his own in the second set.

See won the lag for the sudden death game, but was unable to get a shot on the one after the break. See did take control after an Appleton safety, with a successful jump shot. That control came unraveled though, when See missed a five ball and was forced to sit and watch Appleton run out the remaining balls for the win.

Appleton earned $25,000 in the winner take all event.

Allison Fisher Dominates Chinaaining, China- 15 times World Champion Allison Fisher finally snapped off her first win in China at the 2011 Haining Cup. She defeated friend and fellow top Brit Kelly Fisher. The event hosted all the top stars of China including World 9-Ball winner Bi Zu Qing, Fu Xiaofang, and the sensational Chen Siming. Foreign stars such as Ga Young Kim and Yu Ram Cha also participated.

Allison crushed the field including wins over recent World 9-Ball Champ Bi Zhuqing(CHN), demolished former World Champ Liu ShaSha(CHN), and devastated Tsai Pei Chen 9-2 in the semi-finals. On the other side, Bi Zhuqing crushed Korea’s Yu Ram Cha, before succumbing to Allison. Kelly Fisher overwhelmed everyone in a surprising 9-2 win over Siming Chen. In the finals, Kelly Fisher took on Allison Fisher in their 5th match play in the past 12 months. Allison had won the previous four meetings. Kelly took the lead at 4-2, but then it was all Allison as she won the next 7 of 9 games to win the tournament 9-5. This was Allison’s 3rd finals in China in little over a year, but her first triumph in the finals. “I’ve been close both times before at the World 9-Ball and the China Open, but this is really important for me to win finally here. Kelly and I were delighted to have done so well to get to the finals, though at times our match

was shaky,” said Fisher. Allison is sponsored by Star Tables, a top table manufacturer in China. Between both Fishers, they eliminated almost all the top China bets in the event, proving that Western women’s pool still has alot of bite. And more importantly for Allison Fisher, that after over two decades of play, she is still a deadly force to be reckon with. “In today’s women’s pool, the competition is by far stiffer than ever in history by a landslide. In modern times the Taiwanese dominated, the Koreans had their moments, and now China. And still Allison , the sport’s most decorated veteran still competing, comes out on top. Three finals in China of all places in 12 months? It’s incredible how she always still rises to the top”, said Charlie Williams, Allison Fisher’s coach and manager through Dragon Promotions. He adds, “There’s no doubt, she is still a top,top contender even today. Players still fear the Duchess of Doom.” Fisher flies to Manila, Philippines tomorrow along with her fellow top pro women for the Yalin Women’s World 10-Ball Championship. For Allison, it’s good timing with a nice momentum built from China.

t is time again for the Tour Championship of the Women’s Professional Billiards Association (WPBA) to be held. It is returning to the beach - Lincoln City, OR at Chinook Winds Casino. It has been what feels like an eternity since the ladies were last at Chinook Winds and the fans and followers of the WPBA have been waiting for their return.

Tamre’ Geene’-Rogers, president of the WPBA and local president of the Northwest Women’s Pool Association (NWPA) sat down for an interview.

There have been a lot of rumors and questions about the WPBA circulating with in the billiard community, so I thought I would try to clear a few things up with Tamre’. I asked her why the WPBA was doing less events in the last few years and she remarked, “We have fallen off on tournaments, some of it has to do with the economy and we are working hard to put together a strong schedule for 2012.”

The WPBA has loyal sponsors in Diamond Billiard Products, Simonis Cloth, Delta-13, Aramith and of course the APA. Tamre’ said she was always reaching out to the billiard community to form more alliances and seek new sponsors.

I asked Tamre’ if the WPBA is considering pool halls to host their tour events to which she responded, “Part of the difficulty of that is the production side of it. We have to be able to have the trestles and all of the equipment in order to do the filming for ESPN. It is difficult to do that in a pool room setting and also to bring in the bleachers to allow the amount of spectators that come to the events. If you would go into a pool room you wouldn’t have that opportunity to do all of that because some pool rooms just can’t accommodate that type of seating. You have to play on the equipment the pool room has etc. We have Diamond Billiards as our table sponsor. I don’t know the whole story of exactly when they moved because I came in very late to the WPBA but I played during the time that we played in pool rooms and then when they switched, it’s just a much better venue. It’s much easier to do the filming and to accommodate the fans.

For example in Lincoln City, this time, the Opal-APA is having a Regional Tournament down there so we are doing a side by side with them. We do that in a multitude of places. Last year when we were in Niagara in December we had a side by side with one of the Canadian APA Leagues who came down and held a regional event. It worked out great. We love having the APA as a side by side. The APA is not only our sponsor, we support them, they support us but the players really love having the WPBA. They get to shot clock for the

players sometimes. They volunteer and come in to shot clock a match which is exciting for them and we appreciate them doing that. They also get to come in and watch the professionals play and interact with them. A lot of times the players will hold a mini tournament on a Friday or Saturday night and the WPBA players will go in and play.”

I asked Tamre’ to help everyone understand why the WPBA went down to a field of 48 instead of staying at 64 players. She responded, “Sometimes the field is hard to fill on a 64 player field as you start getting declines. You know players have lives as well, sometimes they can come and sometimes they can’t. The economy has hit people really hard so the cost of having to travel to different places was difficult, so we were asked to take a look at the field and to go down to the 48. Now the one tournament that will remain at 64 will be the U S Open. Because it is a U S Open event, we have different guidelines for inviting people to that event. So we made that decision based on some membership input as well so we went down to 48. We made that decision to help fill the field to have the top players. But where the WPBA is at this moment in time we felt that this was the best choice for us to make. Now that’s not to say in the future when we have a schedule of more tournaments that we are not going to look at the opportunity of opening those events back up again. We’ll challenge that when we get to that point again. But with as little events as there are right now and what we are trying to do we felt it was the best move for the WPBA.

You’ve got to remember, years ago, when you look back at the history of the WPBA the field used to be a 48 player field and then they opened it to 64 and we’ve just chosen to go back to kind of where we were.

We actually have gone back to winner breaks. We aren’t doing the alternating break and we’ve actually gone back to the double elimination until the TV rounds. Then we have to go to single elimination at that point.”

I have noticed over the years that the amount of tournaments telecast by ESPN has fallen off drastically in the last couple of years, so I asked Tamre’ if she had any “insider” information about the situation. She said, “You know the fewer tournaments you have the less opportunity you have to show on television. They are committed to running so much per event. Of course, the less tournaments you have the less women’s billiards there will be on TV. I did not too long ago see some really old classic events on there. I want to say a couple of months ago that I saw something but of course we just reran the finals this last week for the U S Open. I don’t see a lot of other billiards on there. I don’t see the trick shots that used to pop up before, different things like that. It is our goal to get as many events as we can. That’s why we are working so hard on

2012 because the more events we have the more billiards is going to be on television. That’s why it is one of my main focuses, to get events. Signing casinos to bring us into their establishment. I get emails from fans periodically which I love. I love the fans emailing me because I think it’s great they take the opportunity to sit down and write me a note and many times I hear are there going to be more events? And again all I can say is we are working very very hard to make that happen for them.”

Tamre’ has her work cut out for her, but she is not new to challenges. She has been active in women’s pool in the Pacific Northwest since the NWPA began in 2002. It was organized after the ACW (Association of Cuesports for Women) begun by Linda Carter was discontinued. The NWPA has an established history for the past decade in the Pacific Northwest. And has grown into giving the women of the area an organization that helps them reach the goal to compete on a professional level in the WPBA. Whether they aspire to become a professional or just better their own game, the NWPA gives the women a structure from which to do that.

In closing I asked Tamre’ if she had anything else she would like to add and she answered, “The only thing that I would like to say is I am really thankful to the women of the WPBA for entrusting me with this role. Sometimes, I get emotional about it. They have chosen to keep me on this board as president, so to me it means they saw something in me that could help the WPBA. It’s always been a dream of mine to be involved with the WPBA and I never imagined I would ever be president. That was the farthest thought from my mind of that every taking place. I always wanted to say thank you to the players, thank you to the membership, thank you to the rest of my board members for their support as well. We are just going to continue to plug along. This is going to be a great ride and I really look forward to it.”

And if you ever see Tamre’ be sure to get her a carmel frappuccino. She said it’s her new favorite. It’s her one vice besides collecting wine.

WorldPPA Joins US Bar TableueSports International (CSI) and Bob Beaulieu, owner of the WorldPPA organization, are proud to announce the WorldPPA Reno Shootout. The WorldPPA event will be held in conjunction with the CSI 19th US Bar

Table Championships at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, Reno, Nevada. The date for the US Bar Table Championships is February 12-19 and the WorldPPA will take place February 17-19.

The move to the Grand Sierra afforded CSI four times the tournament space than was previously available and the ability to provide more choices for players, such as with the WorldPPA event.

The WorldPPA was established in 2007. Its purpose is to promote billiards, introduce new players to the sport and to organize handicapped tournaments to allow players of all skill levels the opportunity to enjoy competitive play.

While the two events will be held side

premier bar table event in the United States, the $25,250 added US Bar Table Championships is a seven day multi-event tournament held on 7’ Diamond tables and attracts players from across the globe. CSI will be processing the entries for both the US Bar Table Championships and the WorldPPA Reno Shootout. organization. Registration for both the 19th US Bar Table Championships and the WorldPPA

Reno Shootout are available online at the CSI CueSports Tournament System (www.ctsondemand.com). You may also enter by submitting your completed entry

The Cue Ball in Salem, owned by Jim Lebold, hosted the Western Regional US Amateur Preliminary on Saturday September 24th, with Merle as director. There were 62 entries representing the states of Indiana, Hawaii, New York, Oregon, and Washington. (15 women & 47 men) Participation was open to any amateur-regardless of Skill Level or league affiliation—–who sent in their entry to APA Headquarters in St. Louis prior to the sign up window closing in June of 2011.The format was double elimination—–race to 7 for the men and a race to 5 for the women with the Finals for the men being one race to 11 and for the women a race to 9. The races usually required a combination of both 8-Ball and 9-Ball. The winner of the Lag received the choice of either breaking—or—naming the game to be played first. The competition began right after the players meeting at 11 AM and continued through out the day and into the evening. Play was continuous but allowances were made for smoke, rest, and

food breaks. Amazingly, all four finals matches finished within a time frame of 5 minutes at 11:00 PM There were three separate men’s flights, and one women’s flight--- each producing one champion to go on and compete in the US Amateur Championship in Tampa Bay Florida November 4 – 6th. In a total Washington State sweep emerging victorious were Brian Dietzenbach of Auburn, Lee Noble of Redmond, Criegh Dumo of Bonney Lake, and Suzanne Smith of Puyallup. They will be traveling east to compete in the US Amateur in Tampa Florida November 4-6. We wish them all the best of success, and a fun trip. We wish to extend a very special thank you to Jim Lebold & Crew of The Cue Ball in Salem, for hosting the event, and allowing us the use of the clean, and well maintained Cue

Ball location as the site for this year’s 2011 US Amateur Western Region Preliminary. Special thanks also to Rod Bair who assisted with registration and set up, and to Salem’s Larry Hande who officiated the afternoon-evening shift. We received many positive player comments on how nice the room was and the fact that the tables were all in immaculate shape and played absolutely fabulous. The whole long day experience was both exciting and fun as a direct result of the fine condition and quality of the 4 & 1/2 by 9 foot Brunswick tables.

battle that went all the way to double hill. Karrar won games 1 & 3 and Rudy won games 2 & 4. The case game was a real battle, but in the end

it was Karrar winning the bragging rights, the bigger plaque, and the very first slot to Las Vegas.

RED TIERS: (1) There were two Red Tier Finalists. The first match up was between OPAL’s Jonathan Phillips and OPAL’s Delores Petrich. Jonathan had crushed Delores in one of the early rounds but in the finals it was not

“Summer Re-runs”—instead it was “Revenge of the Delores!” She won games 1, & 2, Jonathan won game 3, then Delores won games 4 & 5 to claim the 4-1 victory, The biggest plaque, and all the bragging rights to winning the 2nd slot to Las Vegas.

(2) The Second Red tier finale was an undefeated match-up between OPAL’s Brian Goodrow and Salem’s Esequiel (Zeke) Paloma and It was a real crowd pleaser that went double hill. Zeke won the 1st game, but Brian came back to win games 2 & 3. Zeke then won games 4 & 5 to land on the hill 3-2. Brian then won the 6th game to put the match at double hill. SUNDAY 9-BALL RESULTS:GREEN TIER: OPAL’s SL-2 Johanna “Jo” Altuzarra went to the finals undefeated. OPAL’s Lisa McClellan took a side trip through the one-loss side to get there. The Green Tier Finals between Lisa and Johanna was a real Nail biter coming all the way down to the last rack to determine the winner. However, all of Johanna’s hopes went out the window when Lisa McClellan sank the winning ball to claim a 25-22 victory, and the bragging rights to the first 9-Ball Slot to Las Vegas.

In the first WHITE TIER Bracket, Opal’s Mario Peralta’s and Salem’s Richard Snoke’s both made it to the finals undefeated. In the finals, Mario didn’t know what hit him. Richard came out of the gate firing both barrels and didn’t let up. Richard Snoke smoked Mario 38-17 to claim the bigger plaque, and all the bragging rights to the 2nd Vegas slot.

In the second White Tier Bracket, Salem’s Viana Valdez, and OPAL’s Tina Peralta made it to the finals undefeated.

The much anticipated finals turned out to be a run-a-way. Tina Spanked Viana Valdez 31-17 to claim the victory, the bragging rights to the 3rd 9-Ball Vegas slot, and of course, the biggest Plaque.

BLACK TIERS:

In the first Black Tier bracket, OPAL’s SL-6 Matthew Schoenborn and OPAL’s SL-6 Connie Carlson ended up facing off in the finals. Apparently, when a locomotive gets up a full head of steam it becomes a little difficult to stop, and that was certainly the case with engineer wannabe Connie Carlson ‘cause she tracked right over Matt Schoenborn 46-31 to take the victory, the bigger plaque, and all of the bragging rights to the fourth Las Vegas slot.

In the second Black Tier bracket, OPAL’s SL-9 Jonathan Hahn, and Salem’s SL-7 Jef Stuart made it into the finals. Jonathan had terminated one player after the other to reach the finals undefeated whereas Jef got kicked to the one loss side and had to fight his way back. To shorten the story, the terminator turned into the “turminatee.” Jef got on a roll right out of the gate, and Jonathan, it seemed, couldn’t get anything to go his way. SL-9 Jonathan needed to reach 75 points before SL-7 Jef reached 55 points. That didn’t happen. Jonathan could do no right, and Jef could do no wrong. Jef won 55-31 to claim the victory, the biggest plaque, and the last of the bragging rights to go along with the fifth and last of the 9-Ball slots to the APA National Singles Championships in April 2012.

Special Thanks to Kraig & Carol Pauli & Staff of KC’s Midway in Oregon City for hosting the Singles Regional event. The tables were all in great shape, the food was great, and there was plenty of cold liquid refreshment to be had!

STORY

Lucky #12 BY: ANDREW MONSTIS

Lucky Plays the Pescado GrandeWe did make it out of Vegas safely, and back to Lucky’s ranch. Lucky checked in with his doctor, who said he was in remarkably good shape, under the circumstances. On our way to California we hit several spots. Lucky was saddened that some of his favorite pool halls were gone but that didn’t stop us. We made it to Hardtimes in Bellflower CA. Kind of a legend of a place we were hanging out for a couple of days. Playing easy and light action. We were wining mostly and laying down some. After setting himself up as a B player with a witty demeanor, Lucky was playing a little pool with a Canadian gal, cheap while he waited for one of the big fish to appear.

It’s almost two in the morning. I’ve been scribbling my notes, recounting the past day of some pretty strange up and down action on Lucky’s part. When The FISH walked in. He noticed Lucky right away. That was likely because some of the locals told him about Lucky.

I think this is going to be the big one. Lucky has said nothing for the past 15 minutes. He finished playing the girl and was sitting at the bleachers looking glassy eyed out over the pool tables down below. We both journeyed in the silence, staring at the tables like they were shrines.

But, to the business at hand -- Lucky has to make money here. He knows the guy he will play is fully backed and will play for a good chunk of dough.

Lucky got up and walked through the place, jostled by the small crowds at each table even at this late hour, I ask Lucky how he feels. “Just got some pool to play,” he says. He usually says something witty. Things are different. As we approached the group Lucky was accosted immediately by a tobacco stench person, maybe a bodyguard backup type guy, who obviously smoked.

Lucky looked past him to this fancy player. He was dressed to the max! The suit jacket, slacks and shoes he was wearing were likely over thousand dollars. He had a babe on his arm. Lucky asked him to play one pocket. No lets play nine ball, he said. Lucky got a match in a few minutes with a guy from Mexico. Time to go I thought. I put away my journal and we head for the table they were going to play on.

I suggest to Lucky that he warm up a bit. He says he doesn’t need to. Then he changes his mind and tosses a few balls out on the table, saying need to warm up for this guy so everyone could hear. Lucky asked me if he was dressed nice or should he go get

some nice shoes on. And should he go find a date!! “I’m relieved to see he still has his sense of humor and am reassured that he’s probably feeling ok.

While Lucky strokes the balls around, I see an entourage of a half dozen people followed the Pescado Grande around the room. He briskly walks right over to Lucky and says, “Ready, amigo?”

Lucky says, “Well, I got to hit a couple more balls first.” Lucky never does that I thought. He always plays cold. Why is this different, I wonder? A few minutes pass while Lucky pulls up the rest of the balls and strokes them in, and the other guy screws his cues together. The Babe, who’s with this Mexican sets a couple of plastic bottles of cold water by his chair. I notice that another guy is side betting with the crowd. The same guy who backed the Canadian gal earlier. I can’t understand Spanish, but I think I know pretty

much what he’s saying as he gesticulates toward Lucky, speaking rapidly and laughing, and I hear something about “loco hombre” or something. Lucky tells me to go side bet with that guy which I did for $20 a game. I should have done more but Lucky said only $20. Presently, Lucky says, “Ok, let’s lag.”

“How much do you want to lose?” says the Mexican, grinning through his mustache.

Lucky gives him a look and says, “Whatever you want to lose, amigo.”

Pescado Grande, probably thinking this is his opportunity to bet high, says, “Five hundred a game.”

Lucky raises his bushy eyebrows and says, “Is that it? Don’t you want to freeze up twenty grand?”

Pescado Grande consults with his backer. They must be thinking this is the easiest money ever. I can see them chortling. He turns back to

Lucky, who is busy blowing his nose into his hankerchief and says, “Ok, we will play for a grand a game -- ten games ahead.

“Ok. He holds the money.” Lucky is pointing to me. They finally agreed. Lucky pulls out a huge stack of one hundred dollar bills from inside his jacket, and hands it to me, and the guy’s backer hands me another stack. Holy cow. I’m highly nervous about holding $20,000. I’ve had that much money in my hands before. I count it all out in front of everybody.

“Hope I don’t get mugged,” I laugh nervously to Lucky. He says not to worry, he did his homework on these folks -- it’s fine. NO!, in this place they are too known. So I get it all stuffed into my shirt and jacket pockets and zip up my jacket and sit back down with my arms folded tightly together, just hoping I don’t have to use the bathroom.

(Lucky continued on page 34)

“How much do you want to lose?” says the Mexican,

grinning through his mustache.

Pool Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior 9-Ball Championships which were held in Kielce, Poland September 1-4.

In addition to competing in this year’s junior nationals, several CSI sponsored players have also successfully competed in the BCAPL Nationals.

Long time participants in the BCAPL National Championships, Chad and Levi Behnke hail from the well known pool and billiard Behnke family. The young brothers have cashed in several BCAPL national divisions including the Men’s Open Singles and Mixed Open Team representing their family’s pool room, the Dakota Cue Club.

In 2011 Danny Olson, at age 18, had a banner year. In addition to winning the US Junior National 9-Ball title, he won the Men’s Advanced Singles and was a member of “the Wrecking Crew” which finished 9th in the Mixed Open Team division at the 35th BCAPL National Championships this past May at the Riviera Hotel & Casino.

Chris Byers, in his first year at the BCAPL nationals became noticed quickly. At age 17 Byers was a member of “Abracadabra,” the 1st place Mixed Open Team finishers and out of 1328 entries, finished 2nd in the highly competitive Men’s Open Singles division.

CSI is proud to be able to support these tremendous young talents and the BEF in their goals and the US Junior National 9-Ball Championships.

CueSports International is dedicated to creating more choices for all players. In the past seven years CSI has directly paid out approximately Seven Million Dollars to players. CSI is the parent company of the BCA Pool League and the USA Pool League. CSI also produces independent events such as the US Bar Table Championships, the Jay Swanson Memorial, the US Open One Pocket Championship and the US Open 10-Ball Championship. Pescado Grande wins the lag. Lucky racks and sits down. Grande runs three games just like that. I’ am paying off the side bet every game which is a pain but a safe way to go since iI didn’t know him. His crowd is babbling and laughing all over the place, and though I can’t understand them, it is clear they are happy. On the fourth game, however, Pescado misses a shot and Lucky steps up to the table, saying, “I thought I might never get a shot.”

Pescado Grande slaps him on the back, and laughing, says, “You are not supposed to get a shot, hombre!”

Lucky glances at me. I know what he is thinking, but what he says is, “I am an old man! Do you think that I am going to win any money from you?”

Pescado Grande says, “No, amigo, I do not!” and everyone laughs.

It takes Lucky few games to get even. Nothing spectacular from either player -- they each play just well enough to win. When they are even, the old man Lucky, who in this moment does look old to me, says to Pescado Grande, “This can’t be all you’ve got! If it is you are going to lose!” Thinking that Lucky is funny they all laugh at Lucky and slap him some more on the back, and keep on chattering, loud enough to be distracting to some...

Lucky is now breaking. He breaks and makes the nine, breaks and runs, breaks and makes the nine, breaks and rides, breaks and runs, breaks and makes the nine, breaks and makes the nine, breaks and runs, breaks and rides, breaks and runs. I am enjoying having this guy I am side betting with come over and pay me so fast, but he’s stating to give me the look. Lucky looks at Pescado Grande and his entourage, grins, and says, “Almost halfway there!” No laughter this time. No chattering now. No merriment. Lucky has the Mexican in the CHAIR. I feel like I am in the chair, too. I can feel the pressure, the Mexican having to get up every few minutes to rack the next game and still not get to shoot as minute after long minute stretches into the wee hours. The watching crowd all looks puzzled, floored, speechless… a look I can’t justly describe.

Finally, Lucky sets his cue next to his chair for a stretch, and pulls out a new cinnamon stick to chew on. “I’m getting tired,” he says to me. “I need to get this over with.” Lucky waits for Pescado to rack, gets up and runs another, then a couple more. Pescado won a game or two in this stretch but Lucky is at 8 ahead. It’s only been about 90 minutes. A little disagreement on the rack ensued. The worn felt made it difficult. Pescado brought out a Magic Rack. This was interesting to Lucky a great idea he thought to get the balls to rack near perfect. Foreign to Lucky he said no at this time. If we play, freeze up some more then I say yes. Lucky finished the last two games. Side better paid me on the last game. I handed the money to Lucky. Lets do it again he said.

Lucky got out a new cinnamon stick. Money re-upped. My side bet guy

came up to me and wanted to jack the bet to $50 a game, pay after every game. Lucky gave me the nod to go ahead. Lucky won the lag. Here is the Magic Rack Pescado said. Lucky said OK. The games went back and forth basically were no one ran more then 4 racks at anytime. Lucky two games behind looked puzzled Lucky noticed that it was easier to make extra balls with this rack. He was accustomed to knowing where all the balls go on his break with all his different break speeds and break spots. Knowing Lucky, he was playing position off break for the three ball from the position in the rack. The one and two went down, but the three went go too. His methodical break strategies were out the window. He would have to learn how this rack makes the extra balls that he didn’t expect to go in and adjust for it. It could cause a problem for him if he doesn’t figure out the magic rack break soon.

It was 6am. The game score was even. Lucky was up late, unusual for him, who likes his beauty sleep. We had been up all day, I know Lucky was tired I certainly was. Lucky looking ragged said do you want to come back tomorrow to play some more. Pescado Grande says I might be in the Bahamas tomorrow. I want to play now. You know that he probably just woke up just before he came to the pool hall so he was fresh and ready to play. Being around Lucky so much I can see Lucky slipping some in this match. I am also getting tired of running the side bet money after each game too.

It was 9am. I could barely keep my eyes open. If it wasn’t for the back and forth side bet pay off and if I wasn’t carrying all this money. I’d sleep. The late night makes you think about a lot of things. I was wondering about having Thanksgiving at home with my wife and friends even how I’d cook the Turkey and what side dishes to have. I hoped my cat was doing ok, I know we were talking about introducing a new cat to our house and whether my cat would accept a new cat in her space. Lucky started to talk maybe to keep me awake or even himself awake. I know the sun was out. He brought up his old friend Jimmy Caras. He was remembering his old friend who had had a passed away a few ago. Started to tell a story where Caras was playing for days…. What an encouraging conversation I thought…and he looked at me with that half joking stare. I smiled back. Lucky said “I think I figured out this rack”.

The Score even again Lucky broke made nothing, “I must be getting tired” “I was going to make four balls on the break and run out”. he said, instead Pescado Grande ran out. I got a snack for Lucky thinking this would help him. I went over to the counter everyone was watching me. You know they were nervous that I might bolt out of the place. I came back Lucky had won that game. I told the guy that we should just pay on the end of 5 ahead. I got in a small conversation with the Canadian Girl. She was interesting and from Kamloops. All of a sudden the guy interrupts us and pays me $250 five games ahead. I felt I must have not paid attention. Lucky got there so fast. Looked over to him he had a second wind………..Pick up the December Issue of The Break to see what happens to Lucky!

As always, CPL players went with enthusiasm, played with all their hearts, and regardless of results, they’ll be back next time for more fun and games. Congratulations are in order for all CPL players, and below are those who finished in the money. Congratulations to CPL’s Josie Leroy, invited by Western BCA to participate in the Women’s Grand Master Challenge. Though the round-robin format was different from the races Josie is used to playing, and it took her a few matches to master that mental aspect, she soon gained strength and confidence, and overtook almost half the field of returning Grand Masters, finishing 5th. Outstanding first performance, Josie, and we hope to see you there again! It was a great tournament for Master Shawn Wolf, who won match after match after match, until the only one left was the final, where she ‘finally’ succumbed to Suzanne Smith, but oh, what a great overall performance from Shawn! John Lewis played hard in Men’s Master and took home 5th place, a fine finish, and Dave Avegio and Jeff Hayes did so well in the ‘B’ Division that now both are officially ‘A’ players, and Jim Knappenberger scored 7th in Seniors. Congratulations all around!Three of our five Women’s Teams placed in the money! No Balls All Game in the top 25%, followed closely by Cascade Cue-tees and Ballad Town Babes in 13th-16th. This is one of the best turnouts and performance by our women and we are pleased to see so many women playing in all our divisions. With a core requirement of only 2 players for the upcoming 8-Ball Championships, we hope all the women will get in touch with Sassy to see about getting 4-player teams together.Out of 102 teams, Ray Cunningham, DM of our Fortune Star location, took his team to an outstanding 9th place finish, outplaying our esteemed League Operator Andrew Monstis’ team, who finished a respectable 13th. Both Ray and Andrew were extremely dedicated to helping put on the event by working long hours as Tournament Directors and to also be able to do this well as players is a statement of dedication and perseverance and we thank them. Andrew is also on the Board of Directors and a long-

time member of the Competition Committee and the Contract Negotiation Group. Thanks also must be given to David Haag, DM for our Pub 181 location. David came to the Championships to work and work he did. He could be seen daily wearing a headset and helping with the critical ‘benchmarking’, a process that truly helped keep this event on time. Another benchmarker who put in many long hours was Brock Brisby, a CPL Don’s Dugout player. We all should give them a (gentle) pat on the back.CPL is known for its abundance of loyal volunteers. Steve Marker, Don’s Dugout DM, is now a seasoned Head Tournament Director, a job not largely envied, since it entails making many tough decisions under some trying conditions. Steve is built for the job, does it well, and loves doing it. Retired Western BCA Treasurer Joyce Gumm now handles association purchasing and the store, among other tasks. Machelle Amore is another who will lend a hand whenever she can. Sassy Campbell is Western BCA’s Board of Directors Chair and heads the Contract Negotiations Group. If we’ve overlooked acknowledging anyone, we apologize and thank you! Here are our money winners! Check out www.westernbca.org for a full article on the event and all the results. We hope to see YOU at the 8-Ball Championships in March!

Mosconi Cup Teams Set

TEAM EUROPE

ith The 2011 partyPoker.net Mosconi Cup set to kick off at 11am on Thursday 8th December, the team selected to represent America at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be Shane Van Boening, Shawn Putnam, Mike Dechaine, Johnny Archer and Rodney Morris. These five have finished at the top of Matchroom Sport’s ranking system that comprised ten

events across the USA over a 12 month period. With a total of 26 appearances in the transatlantic tussle between them, there is plenty of experience on hand, with Mike Dechaine being the sole debutant. Following a career best finish at the weekend’s US Open in Chesapeake, Shawn Putnam, who was a member of the winning side in 2005, crashed the top three to guarantee an automatic spot. He ultimately displaced Johnny Archer, but “the Scorpion” and Rodney Morris garnered sufficiently high finishes at the Open to maintain their top five positions and hold off Dennis Hatch, who narrowly missed out.

With the top three in the ranking assured their spots, Matchroom Sport decided to go with the top five after an epic year-long battle among the top players in the USA, and named Morris and Archer as the “wild cards”. The team will now attempt to win back pool’s most prestigious team trophy after defeat in London last December.

The US Mosconi Cup Ranking consisted of 10 events throughout the United States, and culminated in the

US Open. Points were allocated as per the BCA Points List and each event was weighted depending on total purse, size of field and number of top-ranked

players competing.

Only players finishing in the last 32 of each event were allocated points

and players were allowed to drop their worst finish of the

ten event series. At the conclusion, after the 2011 US Open, the top three players were automatically granted entry to the Mosconi Cup side.

DARREN APPLETON’S second successive US Open title – only the third man in history to successfully defend the biggest title in American pool – saw him move to second spot in the final European rankings and secure a second successive PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup appearance. He will be joined by countryman Chris Melling who has enjoyed a fabulous season, with 14 times Mosconi Cup veteran Ralf Souquet (Germany) claiming the third automatic spot. The remaining two “wild card” spots go to the Dutch duo of Nick Van den Berg and Niels Feijen, who have ten Mosconi Cup appearances between them.

Following a 13 event series over 12 months taking in 12 different countries around the world, the top five players in the ranking will now reconvene at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to defend the title they won so well in London last year. World 10 Ball champion Huidji See gave Feijen a run for his money but

came up just six points short as ‘The Terminator’s 17th place finish in Chesapeake saw him over the line. There are two changes from last year$B!G(Js victorious side – Melling comes in for Karl Boyes, while Feijen replaces Mika Immonen. The team will once again be captained by Dutchman Johan Ruijsink.

The PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup is the annual Europe v America pool showdown. In existence since 1994, the event features two five-man teams doing battle in a series of singles and doubles matches over four days of compelling action. Tickets for the Mosconi Cup are priced at $35 per day or $120 for the four day season passes and booking charges will apply. Currently the Mosconi Cup is sold through Ticketmaster (1-800-745-3000) or MGM Resorts Contact Center (1-866-740-7711).Visit www.ticketmaster.com and search “Mosconi Cup”
