March Edition 2017

President Report

The

Dear Members

The competitive part of the season is well underway, with surf

lifesaving’s competition events ramping up. The recent Youth State

Championships held at Hervey Bay SLSC in early February were the

first.

Congratulations to our Junior Activities competitors on their close 2nd

placing to Alex Headland SLSC. The Junior Activities Board,

Coaches, Age Managers, Officials and supporters have worked hard to

keep at the top of the competition ladder to match their last 2

successive wins. The team demonstrated great club spirit,

determination, friendship and resilience and our club is proud of the

great result achieved.

Building on the wonderful results at the Youth Championships, the

club took out 3rd place overall at the Qld State Surf Rescue Champs

held at Dicky Beach SLSC on 25th – 26th Feb. Coaches Lenore Grice

(First Aid) and Maddi Korac (Champion

Lifesaver) with their skilled charges

represented the club well by taking out 1st

Place in the Open Mixed and U19 First

Aid, 2nd place in U15 First Aid and

placing 3rd in U19, U17 and U15 Female

Champion Lifesaver events.

On behalf of all club members, I wish

every competitor at the upcoming State

and Aussie surf lifesaving championships

good luck, and hope that you achieve your

goals which you have trained so hard for

this season.

In these final weekends of the patrol

season members are reminded that the

club needs you to fulfil your patrol

commitment to meet our service contracts

with the Sunshine Coast Council and

SLSQ. If you can’t make your patrols

make sure you find a sub and advise your

Patrol Captain what you organised.

The newly engaged Lifesaving

Development Officer has been busy since

starting, having set up an online booking

system for clients and marketing the

business to the local community and

businesses. So far two First Aid courses

have been completed and a number are in

the pipeline. If you are aware of a

business that requires staff to be skilled in

first aid or CPR then suggest that they

contact Maroochy First Aid Training for a

solution to their training needs.

Once again I congratulate our Grants

Officer, Kim Musgrove, on securing funds

to purchase a Patrol Rescue board and

patrol defib.

Last weekend was memorable with a

number of events held that celebrated our

members, past and present.

Saturday we dedicated the latest IRB to

much admired club member, Glynn

Topfer OAM. The IRB named the ‘Mr

Toppy’ was christened with champagne

and is ready for active service.

Sunday morning started with a High Tea

event run by Summer Surf Girl, Darcey

Starr-Thomas and her team. The event

was a great success and all who attended

thoroughly enjoyed it. Darcey would

like to thank major Sponsors

HelloWorld Maroochydore and Panda

Pearls for their support of the day.

11:00 am Sunday the club launched the

“Robby T” in memory of much loved

Australian Champion and Black Swan,

Robbie Thomasson. The new boat was

sponsored by Cyril & Diane Thomasson

and Ralph Devlin, combined with funds

raised by the Boat Section at the 2016

Aussies Mad Monday event organised

by Melissa Carnie and her fellow

Female Open Boat crew, and hosted by

Tony Scanlon, Surf Air Beach Hotel.

It was great to see the excellent

coverage of the launch of the “Robby T”

in today’s Sunshine Coast Daily

Lifesaving

"High Distinction" is the way Ollie

Hoelsher summarises his patrol's

331/346 result for our second

inspection. Great job Patrol 4 and we

remain on track for our goal of a 'top 5'

finish in the Buhks-Wilkes, with two

inspections to go.

Please remain diligent with equipment

checks; these are easy points that we

should not miss. The case scenarios are

more difficult to maximise, but our

LSDO, Ray Johnson, will be dropping

in on patrols for the rest of the season to

refresh the behaviours that inspectors

are ticking off. He has the check list so

please take advantage of his visits.

Letters will be sent out in early March

to all patrolling members who've missed

patrols through January or February

without informing their PC or posting

on Facebook for a sub. If you are in that

category, please contact your PC to

advise of your make up patrol plans and

"save a tree".

Maroochy First Aid Training is

operational and the feedback from

clients so far has been overwhelmingly

positive. We're a start-up business in a

competitive market but Ray is reaching

out to the community and

Maroochydore SLSC is branded in all

he does.

The current bronze squad will only yield

6 new members to our patrols. Many of

us came through eras where every

course was 20-25 strong. Clearly we are

being well beaten by Maroochydore

South (Alex), and Maroochydore South-

South (Mooloolaba) in recruiting for

courses. The marketing now in place

for First Aid Training and Ocean St

Markets will help but we are always

open to suggestions from our best

assets - YOU. If you're interested in

becoming a trainer, please let the

Lifesaving Admin Office know. If

you want to do a new award (i.e.

ATV, IRB, FA, ARC, PC, etc) also

let the Office know as courses are

organised on demand.

Kim Musgrove, has done it again - a

new defibrillator and 3 new rescue

boards will soon be added to our

gear steward's inventory courtesy of

grants. Fingers crossed for grant

applications in place for a tractor in

the next few months to help towing

capabilities in the sand.

Three boards are now stored next to

the fuel bunker where the IRBs live.

These can be used through the day

by members but must be back on

those racks between 5pm and 6am

for "After Hours Emergency Use".

Please advise the Office if these are

damaged so repairs can be arranged.

Finally, another impressive

performance from a first time

patroller. Roy-J Olive pulled two

patients out of a rip including a

pregnant woman, after conditions

became difficult north of the flagged

area just after low tide on Feb 25.

His father Gary, and Ethan Irvine

also made rescues in that event

which reinforced to all of Patrol 14,

the importance of having "eyes on

the water" at all times on patrol.

See you on the beach.

Need to swap a shift?

Peter joined MSLSC as a Lifesaver in 1957 and

at 75 years of age he still has a passion for saving

lives 60 years later!!

Recently a female had pranged her yacht on a

sandbank off Shorncliffe and had to swim back to

shore against an outgoing tide.

Lucky MSLSC Member Peter Molineux was out

and about that day on his surf ski and was able to

come to the recuse by towing her back to shore

safely!!

Great rescue story Peter. Its good to hear you’ve

still got it!

Go Girls Congratulations to Phoebe Wills-

Grace and Sarah Bryan who are

Maroochydore SLSC’s

representatives at the 2017 Breaka

Youth Excellence Program from

Friday 7th to Sunday 9th April

2017, at Maranatha Recreation

Camp, Yandina. Sarah and Phoebe

will work along with other young

lifesavers to develop their strengths

and capacity to be leaders and

shapers of our club’s future. Have

fun girls and we look forward to

hearing about your experiences

when you get back.

YEP

Mudjimba Island Thank you to all who attended our last YEP event

to Mudjimba Island. Our youth team manned the

IRB's and travelled across for a well worthwhile

adventure to the Island, perfect clear and flat

conditions made snorkling around and walking

onto the island the perfect get away.

Whilst on Mudjimba our youth lifesavers assisted

a stranded and injured woman ashore. I would

like to congratulate them all on their professional

response. It is fantastic to see our young members

running their own social activities and being able

to implement their lifesaving skills set in an

instant.

The next YEP event will be held on Saturday 18

March 6:00pm till 9:00pm, for dinner and games

at the club.

Future Strategic Plan Thank you to the club members who

responded to the Future Strategic Plan

survey sent out in January. Results

are back and an informal workshop

for members to come long and discuss

the results will be announced after

Aussies

Go Alyce and Jordan! Well done to Alyce Burnett placing

first in the K1 500 and K2 500 AND

Jordan Wood placing first in the K2

1000 at the 2017 Canoe Sprint and

Marathon National Championships.

Club Chaplain Clive Herald

She has found a peace with Jesus

and has faith enough to accept that

she will be welcomed into heaven

when her time comes.

She even told me she will have a

glass of nice red waiting in years

ahead when my own time comes.

Death is something we all face at

some time, and for some sooner

rather than later. She has time to

consider and make peace with her

God, but sadly for many that

opportunity is never taken up

Food for thought.

God bless

Clive Herrald

Over the last couple of weeks I

have had to spend time with several

people who have recently been told

they have a terminal condition. The

most upsetting was with a 41 year

old mother with a 7 year old son.

She has pancreatic cancer and has

between 6 weeks and maybe 6

months to live.

Husband is still in shock, but it is

amazing how the lady has accepted

her fate.

She is not a particularly religious

person but spending an entire day

with her just last week she has an

inner strength and in her own

words, she is ready.

Spread the word...

Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club is now

offering First Aid courses to the community through

Maroochy First Aid Training. All proceeds will

benefit the volunteer surf life savers within the club.

Courses can be booked online at:

Go Ella!

Ella Brown has just contested the Nutri Grain

Series final at North Cronulla. This was Ella’s

second year in the series. Unfortunately Ella has

struggled with injury for most of the season and

was unable to complete a lot of the training

required to be up with the front runners.

Ella showed great character in her racing and

continues to be a positive, disciplined and

approachable leader to our youth.

This experience will only serve as a positive for

Ella, she will be back stronger and fitter than ever.

Surf Sports

The competitive season is almost over

with State and National titles being

contested just weeks away. All the

training is now about to pay dividends,

so enjoying the ride.

Aussie and Youth titles are just around

the corner with a planned briefing and

uniform pack meeting to be scheduled

in the coming weeks. The National’s

uniform strip has been finalised and the

Aussies Dinner logistics are being

sorted. Briefing times will be

advertised.

We are still in dire need of IRB

personnel to cover the 12 shifts the

Club has been allocated at the

National titles. The shifts are only 3-

4 hours, please if you have Drivers or

Crewies award we really need your

help. You can contact Stuart Travers

[email protected]

m.au for more details.

Patrol attendance is beginning to slump

in some areas and as per policy if you

miss 2 patrols your nomination for the

upcoming events will be withdrawn, so

please if you are one who has slipped

make-up your time before your actions

wreck your competitive season.

Congratulations to the First Aid and

Surf Rescue teams for their outstanding

performances in their recent State

qualifying titles.

Full Club results can be found on the

website for recent events.

Entry info is also available on the

website

“ ONE CLUB ”

Coach Welcome to the time of year we have all

been looking forward to and working

towards.

This season is a short one, but as a group

we have completed strong training

blocks and are progressing at a pleasing

rate. This has been the best season of

training I have witnessed from the senior

group. The vast majority have

enthusiastically applied themselves to

what’s been asked of them and should

be poised to compete strongly at the

Aussies.

With State and Aussies so close, athletes

really need to be looking after

themselves; nutrition, body maintenance

(stretch, physio) and ensuring the body

is getting enough recovery with sleep

and staying out of the midday sun.

You have worked hard for the last 8

months, give yourself every opportunity

of achieving your goals!

Youth State Titles

The Youth Team travelled to Hervey Bay for the

State Titles in February. Unfortunately we were

not able to defend our Title, finishing a close

second to Alexandra Headland. This was the 9th

year in a row we have managed to finish in the

top 2 (overall point score). Our consistency over

this period far exceeds all the opposition.

The team performed strongly, I’m proud of the

performances and sportsmanship on display from

our members. We have a great group of young

athletes who have done themselves and the club

proud.

Joey McMenamin again led the way with 6 gold

medals. The under 14 age group Joey is a part of

managed to claim gold in all water based team

events. It’s great to see the boys do so well,

hopefully we will soon see them do this in the

Senior ranks.

Changes to Squad

Schedule

U11 -13’s are finished for the season. Enjoy

your break, we will recommence board training

in August.

Our Maroochydore Nippers did our

club proud with their gracious

conduct in defeat and in victory at

the recent State Championships at

Hervey Bay. Tenacious, was one of

many words that described some of

our nipper’s amazing efforts. Despite

us not winning the event, every

Competitor, Age Manager, Official,

IRB crew, Team Manager Steve,

coaches Bugsy and Glen certainly

lifted the bar when it comes down to

a team moving in one direction and

achieving an incredible result.

Congratulations also go to Alex

Headland who have been working

hard especially in the sand this year,

their competitor engagement has

certainly paid handsome dividends.

Hervey Bay Surf Club were perfect

hosts and did an amazing job for

such a small dynamic club. I'd also

like to thank Queensland SLS for

putting together one of the best run

State Carnivals that I have been to in

26 years.

Our mighty under 8’s to under 10’s

contested he Sunshine Coast Branch

Championships last Sunday (5th

March) at Redcliffe Beach. No doubt

they will have some fun for their last

carnival which will conclude their

2016/17 season.

The Cadet Age group (U14 to U15) are

training hard, ready to peak for the

Youth National Championships being

held at North Kirra on Sat 25th and

Sun 26th March. We welcome all our

Nipper families to come down and

cheer them on especially on Sunday

when the exciting Cameron Relay

finals are on.

Finally, congratulations to those who

competed in Surf Rescue last weekend

at Dickys Beach, really testing their

knowledge on the first aid side of “our

business”.

On behalf of our awesome Nipper

committee, I wish all Nippers and their

families a safe and happy off-season

and we all look forward to seeing you

again next summer.
