Year 1 & 2 Home Learning Plan – Week beginning 6.7.20 - Pirates
Please be aware this is a list of suggested activities for the week ahead. Don’t forget to continue reading at home regularly, both reading to an
adult and enjoying books together. On the school’s website is an additional list with a range of websites you can access for further ideas.
You can choose to do the one chilli challenge or the two chilli challenge for some of these activities now depending on age/ability
English Maths Other
English 1- To read and sort real and nonsense
words.
Play the Pirate game ‘Buried Treasure’ on Phonics Play.
Read the real and nonsense words and decide whether
they go in the treasure chest or the bin.

Year 1 children should mainly play Phase 3 and
Phase 4 revision games or focus on any sounds you are
not sure of,
Year 2 children should play Phase 5 revision
games.
After playing, using the real words you have found, can
you put them into sentences and write it down?
Maths 1 - Shape hunt! (Sheet E)
Today we are going to be checking that
we remember all our 2D shape names. Once we
have done this, we are going on a shape hunt to
see what 2D shapes we can find around the
house!

CHALLENGE - 2D shape properties
When we talk about the properties of 2D shapes,
we normally talk about how many corners and
sides they have.
Sides can be straight or curved. Corners are
where the sides meet.
Can you identify the properties of 2D shapes?
Monday – (Sheet J) History - Can you recognise and talk
about who was important e.g in a simple
historical account?
Read about some Famous Pirates below. Create a Wanted poster picture of your favourite one. You can use the template below or create your own. You could even stain the paper with a cold tea bag to make it look old!
English 2 - To describe a pirate using adjectives
and noun phrases.
Listen to the story ‘Molly Rogers Pirate Girl’.

What do think of the two main characters, Molly and
Captain Firebeard? What do you think you need to
have or be to be a pirate? Brave? A hook for a hand?

Tuesday – (Sheet K) Science – performing simple tests Have fun investigating fizzy pirate coins! Take a photo to remind yourself what happened.
English 3 – To write a ‘How to’ instruction guide.
Imagine you have received a letter in a bottle from
someone else who has been taken aboard Captain
Firebeard’s boat. They need to pretend to be a pirate so
they can fit in but don’t know how! What advice can
you give them?
In 3 easy steps, can you help them become a pirate?
(Sheet B) Think about what they might need to wear,
say and do. Use your ideas from yesterday to help you.
Can you use time words (first, next, finally etc)
and adverbs in you instructions (carefully,
quickly etc)?

You might want to use

Read the information on Pirate ships Design a pirate flag and label a pirate ship. Keep the pirate ship if you can, for tomorrow!
English 4 - To read the poem Yo Ho Ho and answer
comprehension questions
Read the poem Yo Ho Ho (Sheet C) – try hard to
include expression as you go and make it interesting to
the listener. Can you answer the questions about it?
You may need to look back at the poem to help you
answer them.
Maths 4 – Reasoning - (Sheet H)
Can you use your shape
knowledge to solve these
problems?
Try to answer 1 problem.
Try all the questions.
Thursday - (Sheet M) Science – performing simple tests & identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials. Waterproof your pirate ship! You can draw a new ship or, use your labelled ship from yesterday!
English 5 - Handwriting
Here are some handwriting sheets (Sheet D) for you to
practise with. Make sure you use a sharp pencil to help
you, and keep your letters the correct size.
Maths 5 Battle Ships (Sheet I)
Follow the instructions and have a go with a
partner. Did you know, it's been
around since the 1930's! People
first played it on paper as we will
today. It was sold as a board
game in 1967!
Battle ships is a fun game – whose Pirate ship will
survive?
You could dress up in your Pirate hat and eye
patch to play if you wanted to make it more real!
Federation Activity 10th July (Sheet N) Across the UK, children have been completing home learning, working hard to consolidate their learning previously done in school. Your task this week is to create your own Home School Crest. Think about key behaviours and attitudes that describe a lifelong learner, and use these as key words or values to represent yourself. For example; resilience, commitment and hard work. You can make it as colourful as you like. Any images used should relate to you as a learner and the values you hold. Some examples are below. Your grown-ups at home have done an amazing job caring and teaching you over these long, crazy weeks. Why not create a Home School Teacher Crest for them to wear with pride as a ‘thank you’ for all their hard work and support. Thank you to Oliver and Daniel Charrington in Year 4 for this activity idea.
