Sharon Mashige, a midwife at the Vaalwater Clinic, received a donation ofcare packages for new mothers from Die Pos/The BEAT delivered by thenewspaper’s Vaalwater journalist, Marlene Vermaak, on Friday, 14 November.Mashige has been providing pre-and postnatal care for mothers and infantsand assisting women in labour at the clinic for the past nine years, and saysthat she is “very happy” about the gifts.
This past week, a video has beenmaking the rounds online. It showsa Ugandan nanny viciously beat, kick, and step on an 18-month oldlittle girl. It’s hard to get into the mind of
someone like that.“Who would do such a thing?” one
wonders. “What kind of demon doessomething like that to a child?”Most of us will never understand
the thought process in the mind ofan abuser. Even modern medicalscience can’t quite work out whatstresses cause people to becomeabusive. They have been able to identify
some factors. The most importantone is that those who are abusedare more likely to become abusivein turn. It’s called the cycle of abuseand it works like this: Young Johnsees his father beat his motherevery day. He is a child, and this isreality: Men beat women. Theybeat them when they talk back, when they dress wrong, or whenanother man looks at them wrong. There’s nothing wrong with this, even though he might not like it.Violence is the way conflict ishandled in his home. When John grows up, and
eventually marries, he ismeasurably more likely to beat hisintimate partner or children. Eventhough he may have since learnedthat abuse is wrong, the lessons ofhis early childhood stick, and thecycle of abuse continues. Hischildren see him beat their mother, and each of them is more likely toabuse in turn. If he has daughters, they are more likely to choosepartners who abuse or hurt them, because that is the way that theyhave experienced male/femalerelations to work. Thus, abuse isnot only a vicious cycle, it’s a sortof pyramid of evil that will grow andgrow until we stop it.It is important that we spread the
message of 16 Days of Activism farand wide. We need to bring it intopeople’s houses, because until theygo to school, what happens in thehome may be all the child knows. We need to scream it from therooftops because it is up to us tospread the message that the abuseof women and children is not justthe way the world works. The abuse of a child is possibly
the purest expression of evil in theworld, and a man who needs tobeat a woman to prove hismasculinity is no man at all.
One of the oldest legends inEurope, dating back to aroundthe 11th century, is the story ofKing Lear and his threedaughters. It was dramatized byShakespeare in the 16th centuryas The Tragedy of King Lear, which is well worth a readdespite Shakespeare killing offalmost every named character inthe play in the last act — but thisis Shakespeare’s way, and weshouldn’t hold it against him.The story can be summarized
like this: Lear, King of England, isgetting old and decides that it istime to decide how to divide thekingdom. So he calls in his threedaughters, Regan, Goneril andCordelia — the youngest, and hisfavourite — and asks them howmuch they love him. Regan andGoneril make long floweryspeeches, and are granted largeportions of land. Cordelia saysthat she loves him but, when shemarries, she will have to love herhusband more than him, and soshe can’t say that she loves himmost in all the world. In theoriginal legend, she said that sheloves him as she loves the salton the table (and in that time saltwas quite valuable).Lear is enraged and disinherits
her, marries her off to the King ofFrance and sends her away. Hethen says that he abdicates thethrone and will spend a month ata time with each of his remainingdaughters (Regan and Goneril)with his retainers. That goesabout as well as could beexpected. Regan and Goneril, tired of putting their father up inthe style to which he isaccustomed, begin to mistreathim and his retainers, and thestory ends with Regan andGoneril dead and Lear, now mad, wandering out into a storm to dieof exposure. Cordelia, meanwhile, becomes Queen of France andlives happily ever after. That’s inthe original version. TheShakespeare is longer, andnobody gets a happy ending. The essential morals of the
story (there are two) is that oneshould always trust the harshtruth over the pretty lie, and thattelling the truth may be painful, but it’s the right thing to do.Regal and Goneril, who flattered
their father and told him what hewanted to hear, die, whileCordelia, who told the truth, livesa long and happy life – or as longand happy a life as a woman inthe 11th century could expect.Lear, who lent his ear to flattery
and rejected Cordelia for tellingthe truth, is mistreated by hisother daughters once he hasnothing more to give them anddies mad and alone.Regan and Goneril’s fate, on the
other hand, can be called alesson on the proper treatment ofone’s elders. They flattered Learwhile they needed to and turnedtheir backs once they thoughtthey had gotten everything fromhim, and they got theircomeuppance.

higher than the previous requirements, inkeeping with the Department’s plan toraise the benchmark for learningachievement. In 2013, learners were only required to
pass seven of their nine subjects, while in2014 they will have to pass eight. Theywill need to achieve a mark of at least50% in one of the official language and asecond language at 40%, compared tothe 40% and 30% requirements in 2013.A conditional transfer was allowed in

that curriculum changes result in somedegree of instability in the system and ittakes a few years before the systemadapts and compensates for thesechanges. We have been on the alert tothe possible impact of the curriculumtransition,” said Mhlanga. It was apparent from the mid-year
performance that the new promotionrequirements were adversely affectingperformance at school level. However, itwould have been premature for theDepartment to respond at that stage.Reports from the provinces have
indicated that learners have beennegatively affected by the newrequirements beyond what wasexpected.“It would be unfair for the class of 2014
to bear the brunt of a systemic changeand there is a need for the Department tomanage the transition,” said Mhlanga.
