The Manatee Community Concert Band is off to a great start thisseason. Rehearsals are underway and the size of the band grows each week as we welcome back all our friends from the Northern states. It’s an exciting time and we are thrilled to have George Nickson on the podium leading us through this fi rst concert series.
The updated members schedule is now available online and in this edition of The Band Beat. The fi rst week of November we will welcome the Bay Chorale as we prepare for our Celebrate America combined concert. As a reminder, George will be directing our November and February concert series. Jason will be directing the December and March concert series.

SpotlightA Message From the President
Grant Season is Upon Us!This is the time of year that the Board of Directors is preparing for the 2019-2020 Grant Season.
Many of the grants are due at the end of 2018 or in the early months of 2019. If you have experience in Grant Writing or would like to give it a try, please see Faith Faust (2nd horn) at rehearsal or send her an email to [email protected] with the subject line GRANTS.
You can also email her with ideas for Grants you know of. This past year we took part in the Giving Challenge and also received a $1,000 grant from The Exchange
(formerly the Women’s Exchange) of Sarasota.
This month we would like to Spotlight trombonist, Becky Guth. Becky is a
retired pharmacist from Ohio where she played in several bands. She moved to Florida in 2004 with her husband,
Eric, who plays tuba. Not only is Becky a dedicated member of the Manatee
Community Concert Band but she also performs with the Suncoast Concert
Band, the Jazz Ambassadors Big Band and the Sarasota Concert Band. She serves as the Music Librarian for our band as well as the Sarasota Concert Band. Becky is a proud Grandmother
who just recently welcomed a new grandbaby! Thank you Becky for your
dedication and service to the Manatee Community Concert Band!
Jason Weintraub
Meet the DirectorsGeorge Nickson
Jason is the Director of the Chautauqua Community Band which he founded in 1992.
Jason is an accomplished Oboe and English Horn player and performs regularly with his wonder-ful wife, Nancy as the Weintraub Duo. Jason attended Eastman School of Music where he
received both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees. Jason is currently a member of
the Chautauqua, NY Symphony Orchestra and has previously performed with the U.S. Army Field
Band and the Rochester Philharmonic to name a few. Jason taught oboe at the University of Okla-
homa and Kansas State University at Emporia.
George is the Principal Percussionist for the Sarasota Orchestra. He has performed with
orchestras throughout the United States including the San Francisco, Boston and Detroit Sympho-nies. George has taught at the Julliard Summer Percussion Seminar and at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Hailed by the New York Times as, “a performer handling his role with
ease and flair,” George Nickson is comfortable and virtuosic as a conductor, soloist, and orches-tral percussionist. Mr. Nickson regularly appears as an artist and clinician for Zildjian Cymbals and Majestic Percussion and is a founder and Artistic
Director of ensemblenewSRQ.
I would like to thank Faith Faust for being our Director/Con-ductor on 10/23. She is an example of the volunteerism that is needed during this transition period. Many tasks need to
be done by the Board and the Band since we don’t have a full time Director. We need help in setting up all performance ven-ues, but especially setting up Satellite venues. Help is needed
to set up chairs and the sound system. Thank you to those who have agreed to usher. We still need a few more ushers.
Please consider serving on the Board of Directors for the 2019/2020 season. Two thirds of the Board are retiring.
Please join me in welcoming our second Guest Director, Jason Weintraub. His first rehearsal is 11/20. He will be our Director for the Holiday and March concerts including the finale of our
great season.Jim Hyler
November 2018 3The Band
The importance of each individual’s pitch cannot be overstated for the wind band, or any ensemble for that matter. Particularly with the number of different timbres and sonorities that are represented within the ensemble, good pitch
requires a number of distinct layers of careful thought and pre-planned execu-tion. First, individual practice of playing along with a drone pitch, or tuner, and really focusing on making sure the instrument is in tune, fi rst, is the initial major building block for good intonation. There are a number of excellent strobe tun-ers on the market today which are apps for Android and iPhones. They come at a cheap price and can be downloaded instantly, offering really excellent infor-mation. I think it is not a stretch to say that at least half of your practice time
should be dedicated to getting used to what it feels like and what instrumental adjustments are required to be able to reliably play pitches in tune. Learning
the notes is only half the battle!
The second step is being aware of your section’s intonation on certain “prob-lem” notes throughout passages in the rehearsal. Being aware and fl exible in
these moments can bring closer pitch across the section.
Step three then is collectively, as a section, ensuring that you are “listening down” to the bottom, fundamental pitch of the band. Typically coming from the lowest member of your section (bari sax, bass clarinet, or trombone, eu-
phonium, tuba, etc) This allows the collective pitch of the ensemble to be con-nected and thus will result in a warmer, fuller and more rich sound.
Happy Practicing!
-George Nickson

Music StandsPlease bring your own music stand to ALL satellite concerts (i.e., Imperial Lakes, Harbour Isles, etc.).
The Board of Directors has discussed this topic at length. To transport stands for band members is not only strenuous but costly to the band. A large percentage of truck space is taken up with
stands. With that in mind, we decided that we will no longer transport stands to satellite locations. The preferred music stand is the Manhasset black metal stands; however, whatever you have
available is acceptable. If you don’t own a stand of any kind, ask your fellow band members, there are plenty of extras floating around. If you would like to purchase one Jim Bertrand (1st Horn) of Bertrand’s Music would be happy to assist you! Stands will continue to be provided at the main
concert venues (Neel PAC and Southeast High School).
