“Making 2020 a Year of Worship!”

“And Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Je-

sus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” – Colossians 3:17

Ready or not, here comes 2020! A new year is always an exciting time when we set

goals and resolutions with hopeful anticipation to what will come. For some, it’s all

about resolutions. It’s about a “new you” and how you can better yourself or your situation.

Working in the grocery store for many years one of the trends we always noticed was how our

salad bar sales went through the roof during January. Everyone is trying to eat better and lose

that holiday weight. Gyms across the nation experience growth in membership and many people

purchase treadmills and stationary bikes too. For others, this year brings a few plans to check

off items on your “bucket list”: that list you have of things you want to do before you pass away

or may not be physically able to accomplish.

May I suggest to you that whatever you do or whatever desires you have for the next year, you

plan to do them all as worship to God. As Paul wrote to the Christians in Colossae, his desire

was that whatever they would do or say would be done in the name of Jesus with thankfulness to

God. When it all comes down to it, this would be what we call living a life of worship.

When someone says the word “worship” what usually comes to mind is the first 20-30 minutes

of church and the songs that we sing. In our modern world, worship often becomes reduced to a

category of music. But worship is so much more.

One of the Hebrew words for worship is avad. This word carries multiple meanings. It is used in

Scripture not only for worship, but can also mean, “to serve” and “to work.” In the story of Ex-

odus, Moses comes to Pharaoh and tells him to let the people go so they can avad. Here the word

gets translated either “worship” or “serve.” In another place God uses this word when talking

about the Sabbath. He says, “Six days you shall avad, but on the seventh day you shall

rest.” (Ex. 35:2) It is here that the word is translated as “work.”

Consider for a moment that God does not simply want us to worship Him one day a week at

church, but throughout the week in everything we do. He wants us to worship and serve Him…

avad, as we live and as we work…avad. Worship is far more than a few moments on a Sunday

morning. As you anticipate and plan for the coming year, be sure to worship, serve, and work

for the Lord in everything you do because everything you do can be an offering of worship to

God. May 2020 be a year of worship that is pleasing to God in your life and through our church.

In His Amazing Grace,

Pastor Chad
