I have served on the Port Clin-ton High School Athletic Hall o
Fame selection committee o andon since its inception. They havea complicated set o rules that re-quire 7 votes rom the committeemembers or election. This year, despite a very good group o f-nalists, including the 1971 PCHSootball team that won the GreatLakes League, neither a team noran individual was selected. There-ore, there will be no Class o 13going into the Hall o Fame. Onething is or sure, the committeewould like to have more nomina-tions. Just send them to the highschool, or pick up a orm at theHigh School ofce or the newBoard o Education ofce. You

Black Swamp Conservancy has acquiredan 80-acre tract o land and donated it toDanbury Township in Ottawa County. Theproperty, located on the Marblehead Pen-insula, is adjacent to the townships existing111-acre Meadowbrook Marsh Preserveand will expand the size o the preserve tomore than 190 acres.
The existing 111-acre preserve, ownedand managed by the township, includestrails, picnic acilities and an observationplatorm or wildlie viewing. The new ad-dition connects to the existing preserve tocreate a cohesive corridor and preserves theremainder o the marsh, which contains adiverse mixture o habitats and harbors anumber o rare species. In addition to theland donation, Danbury Township andBlack Swamp Conservancy have enteredinto a perpetual land conservation agree-ment on the entire 191-acre preserve, toensure the signifcant natural resources onthe property remain in their natural stateorever.
Meadowbrook Marsh Preserve is a grandslam or land conservation. It is open topublic use, has scenic beauty, protects wild-lie habitat and wetlands, and provides aterrifc location or bird watching, which isan important part o the tourism industryalong Lake Erie, said Kevin Joyce, execu-tive director o Black Swamp Conservan-cy. We are really pleased to partner withDanbury Township and the Ohio Ornitho-logical Society to nearly double the size oMeadowbrook Marsh Preserve at no costto the township.
This is a very meaningul project orBlack Swamp Conservancy, said RobKrain, its conservation director. Mead-owbrook Marsh is a truly unique site, oexceedingly high biological value. We com-mend the Danbury Township trustees orhaving the oresight to set this place aside
or wildlie habitat, public recreation andenvironmental education. It is a real plea-sure or us to assist with this expansion andpermanent protection o the preserve.
While the Marblehead Peninsula is un-der considerable development pressure or
permanent and seasonal homes, it is alsoa ocal area or a number o conservationorganizations. The close proximity to LakeErie and major migratory yways makesthe preserve a haven or bird species anda hotspot or local bird watchers. Inhabit-ing the property are a number o rare and
threatened species including the bald eagle, early buttercup, narrow-leaved summerbluets, black-crowned night heron anddeers-tongue arrowhead. Area organiza-tions such as the Ohio Ornithological So-ciety and the Black Swamp Bird Observa-tory have utilized the preserve extensivelyor educational programming.
Meadowbrook is a magnifcent wildlieoasis in the heart o one o the most popu-lar destinations in the state o Ohio, statedDanbury Township trustee Dianne Rozak. It oers an excellent experience or pas-sive recreation while maintaining naturalareas or species that make their home inits woods and grassland. The trustees arevery pleased to acquire additional land or
this preserve and look orward to a reward-ing partnership with the Black SwampConservancy.
The Ohio Ornithological Society playeda key role in the project. Recognizing theecological signifcance o MeadowbrookMarsh, and earing the property mightsoon be lost to development, the OhioOrnithological Society contacted BlackSwamp Conservancy or their expertise inland protection. Beore this land donation, the majority o the marsh and surround-ing natural habitat was not protected romdevelopment or conversion to agriculturaluse. The Ohio Ornithological Society alsocontributed money or the purchase o theproperty, which they raised during theirMidwest Birding Symposium held annu-ally in Lakeside, Ohio.
Protection o our rapidly diminish-ing wetlands is critical or Ohios wildlieand migratory bird species, stated CherylHarner, past Ohio Ornithological Societyboard member. The Ohio Ornithologi-cal Society and the thousands o birders inOhio applaud the actions o the DanburyTownship trustees. They are protectingthe last great wetland in the township andproviding access to this important area.Marblehead is a better place today becausethe trustees were proactive in working toattract more bird watching tourists.
Black Swamp Conservancy donates
property for Danbury Township Preserve
Black Swamp Conservancy, based in Perrysburg, is a non-proft land conserva-tion organization dedicated to protecting and preserving natural and agriculturallands or the beneft o uture generations. The Conservancy preserves land mostlythrough perpetual land conservation agreements known as conservation easements.Through such an agreement, the landowner gives up the right to develop the prop-erty in order to protect its conservation values, which might include its value ashabitat or native plants and animals. The Conservancy serves sixteen counties innorthwest Ohio, including the Lake Erie islands, and has protected nearly 13,000acres during its twenty-year history.

tion agreements, visit www.blackswamp.org, or contact Sarah Brokamp at s [email protected] or 419.872.5263.

Wednesday Kiwanis lunch meetings inPort Clinton are rarely laced with politics. However last Wednesday there were somebig surprises. Sometimes when membershave announcements, they make them byturning in happy bucks. Last Wednes-
day, two Kiwanis members announcedthey were ormally going to run or seatson Port Clinton City Council, by oeringhappy bucks to the treasurer.
Kassie Anderson, a resident o Alice
Street in Port Clinton, announced her in-tention to run or the1st Ward seat current-ly held by DemocratRon Aukerman. TrishMcCartney, a residento Ninth Street southo Magruder Hospi-
tal, is running or 3rdward council and theseat presently held byDemocrat Randy Lip-straw. Both Anderson
and McCartney are running as Republi-cans.
The primary issue that has motivatedboth to run is a shared interest in econom-ic development in Port Clinton. Both areinvolved in amily businesses. Andersonsamily owns Transmissions Unlimited onWest Lakeshore Drive and McCartney is a
State Farm Insurance agent with an ofcein the Sutton Center.
As a person involved in a small amilybusiness, I have a vested interest in see-ing our community succeed and grow,
says Anderson. McCartneys answer tothe question, what is
your main reason orrunning? is essential-ly the same. She wantsto see the city stopplaying politics withthe economic uture
o the community.

State Representative Chris Redfern, start-
ing his second stint in Columbus in thatposition, held a Town Hall session Fridaymorning at Port Clinton City Hall. A largenumber of residents and business own-ers from along Lakeshore Drive on PortClintons west side decided it would be agood opportunity to vent their frustra-tions about being forced to tap in to a citysewer line that was put in place a couple of
years ago to service Camp Perry and theLake Erie Business Park.
80 residents and businesses have beennotied by the Ottawa County Health De-partment that they must tie into the lineby the latter part of 2013 or face legal ac-tion. For some of the residents that cost isupwards of $15,000. For some of the busi-
nesses, the number is much higher. Onecampground operator stated that he hadalready had to borrow $31,000 to pay im-pact fees.
All of the elected and non-elected countyofcials agreed that an order that has beenmandated by the Health Department andthe Ohio EPA, as this one has, will certain-ly be followed through. The way the sewerproject was put together in the rst placemakes it ineligible for a program that al-lows assessments for the individual tap ins
to be paid over 20 years. Block grants canbe applied for, but would cover only the 9
or 10 residents with the lowest incomes, according to Geno Monaco.County Commissioner ???? spoke to the
gathering, pledging that the county com-missioners will sit down with the City ofPort Clinton to come up with some cre-ative means of nancing for both the resi-dents and the business owners, to help al-leviate the impact of getting hit with bigfees before the end of the year. Redfernsuggested that the residents ask for an ex-tension from the Ottawa County Board ofHealth. We need to go through a processto nd resources to cover the costs, saidRedfern.
Monaco noted that the interpretation ofthe laws by state agencies and the health
department has changed in the last threeyears, since the dumping of phosphorusinto Lake Erie began to cause the algaeblooms in the lake in 2011. The environ-mental health of Lake Erie has become amuch higher priority.
The overall consensus among the countyand city ofcials in attendance was thatsome sort of low interest or no interest -nancing be found to help the business andproperty owners extend out the cost of thetap-in requirement.

A new program to help patients keep better track of theirprescribed medications is now being offered at BassettsMarket Pharmacy in Port Clinton. This unit-dose bubblepackaging system is designed to ensure people take theirpills at the proper times each day and in the correct dos-age.
It is very simple and easy to use, said Dawn Fitt, Bas-setts Market Pharmacy Manager. This will be a usefultool for patients who may have trouble keeping track of,or who may forget to take their medications. I really be-
lieve almost anyone on multiple drugs can benet fromthis program. The service will be offered as a single medication blis-
ter pack or a multi-medication weekly med-box type ofblister packaging. The medications can then be punchedthrough a foil type backing and are organized accordingto day and time they are to be taken.
This service targets patients who may live in assisted liv-ing facilities, group homes, or any individual who may justneed help remembering to take their medications. It can
be very helpful for patients who take a lot of medicationsor forget when or if they have taken their pills, said Fitt.Adherence, or following your prescribed drug schedule, isvery important for medications to be fully effective, and toavoid hospital visits and more healthcare costs.
It was a natural thing for us to work with patients to en-sure better outcomes, and it happens to t with BassettsPharmacys goal to provide services that help patients getthe best care and get the full benets from their drug ther-apy, Fitt said.
To participate in this program, set an appointment withthe pharmacist, bring in your medications and the phar-macist will screen your prescriptions to double check fordrug interactions and duplications. Bassetts Pharmacy isoffering a free one month trial to anyone who is inter-ested. After that, there will be a monthly fee to providethis service. Bassetts Pharmacy also offers free deliveryand mail services.

Port Clinton LighthouseOn behalf of the board
of the Port Clinton Light-house Conservancy I wantto thank everyone whojoined us at the public
meeting at the Ida RuppPublic Library last Thurs-day, at which we discussedour ongoing efforts to re-store the old lighthouse.
Judging from the strong attendance, there isa great desire to see the lighthouse restoredand what that could mean for the future ofthe city.
I fervently hope that this grassroots cam-paign, which we have dubbed Bring Backthe Light, will begin a necessary dialog, notonly about the future location of the light-house but also the future of the community. For those who were unable to attend or wereunaware of the event, and who are interested
in monitoring the progress of the project,we plan to schedule future public meetingsin order to keep the public informed. In themeantime I continue to urge resident resi-dents to tell city leaders how they feel aboutthe preservation ofthis wonderful artifactand what part it should play in Port Clin-tons future development.

Trailing 19-9 midway thru thesecond quarter, the Port ClintonLady Skins mounted a furious rallyagainst Perkins, outscoring the Pi-rates, 43-23, the rest of the way toclaim victory, 52-42.
Down 19-9, the Skins went on a
10-0 run, tying the game on a three-point play by junior forward TiffanyColston early in the third quarter.
Colston gave the Skins the leadfor good at 26-24 on a three-point-er midway thru the fourth quarter. From that point, Port Clinton out-scored Perkins, 26-18, the rest of way.
Colston led the way, nished with21 points and 10 rebounds, bothgame highs, and Hope Thorbahncontributed 12 points and veboards. Colston also did a ne jobdefensively, holding Perkins forwardShannon Ebert in check, and limitedher to 10 points.
After losing three straight games, thePort Clinton boys basketball team wasable to right the ship, at least temporar-ily, in their 66-59 victory over St. MaryCC.
Holding a 36-21 lead over the Panthers, the Redskins nearly let the lead slip awayas SMCC cut the decit to 60-56 beforeholding on for the win.
Freshman Nathan Stubbleeld led theway with 29 points and seven reboundsand Brock Moore and Ian Kyle nishedwith 11 and 10 points, respectively.
SMCC got 23 points from playmakerDenarius Harris.
With the win, the Skins improve to3-11 overall and 3-7 in the SBC. ThePanthers, meanwhile, fall to 9-7 and 4-6in the league.
Port Clinton returns to action thisweekend as they face two of the bestteams in the area. On Friday, the Skinshost Perkins (12-3, 9-1 SBC) and, onSaturday, Port Clinton welcomes Nor-walk (16-0).
Trailing 31-24 early in the third quarter, the Oak Harbor Rockets were in positionto make a game of it against the undefeatedClyde Fliers.
But, as great teams do, the Fliers put thegame away by outscoring the Rockets, 27-13, during the rest of the quarter and 17-7in the nal period to defeat Oak Harbor,75-44, on Friday at home.
Led by Amanda Cahill and Lexi Weber, who scored seven points apiece in the thirdquarter, Clyde took over the game in thethird period to win its 18th game of theseason. Cahill nished with 22 points forthe game and Kelsey Michaels helped pacethe Fliers with 21 in the victory.
With the win, the Fliers improve to 18-0overall and 11-0 in the Sandusky Bay Con-ference. Oak Harbor, meanwhile, falls to9-6 and 6-5 in the league.
Kelsey was a key inside, doing some dirtywork, and those are things we need, saidClyde head coach John Cahill. Amandawas Amanda and we got past a pretty goodbasketball team in a game that was closerthan the score indicated. It was a prettycompetitive game.
Breanna Michaels scored nine points andWeber and Makaylin Lozier nished withseven and six, respectively.
We got good play out of a lot of kids,Coach Cahill said. The deeper we are, thebetter we are.
The Rockets, who trailed 17-6 after one
quarter and 31-21 at halftime, were able tocut the decit to 31-24 on a three-pointerby Maria Boers early in the third quarter. At that point, Oak Harbor, which had notplayed very well until that point, had to feelpretty good about how things were going. That is, until Amanda Cahill, Kelsey Mi-chaels and Weber took over.
We talked about how we werent playingvery well and how we werent executing (athalftime), Amanda Cahill said. We cameout in the second half and played better as ateam. Oak Harbors a really good team andwe knew they would ght back.
Oak Harbor point guard Makayla Car-penter led the Rockets with 16 points,Andrea Cecil nished with 12 and Boerschipped in with 11.
We pulled it to seven at the start of thethird quarter, said Oak Harbor assis-tant coach John Kontack, and I think welooked up and said, Wow, were in thisgame. Youve got to give credit to CoachCahill, Amanda Cahill and Kelsey Mi-chaels. We felt that we didnt play very wellin the rst half and were down 10 (at half-time) and we hit a three to get within seven.Youre right there in it, and Clyde scoredin bunches and thats where you get hurt.Amanda Cahill did a nice job of running
their press. The Rockets resume action on Tuesday
when they travel to Genoa and Clyde hostPort Clinton next Saturday.
Huron controlled the game throughout, jumping out to a 16-4 lead after one quar-ter before cruising to a 62-38 win over Oak
Harbor. The Tigers took a 37-21 lead into the half
before putting it away with a 16-8 advan-tage in the fourth quarter.

ter and held a 23-12 advantage at halftimebefore taking control by outscoring OldFort, 36-17, in the second half to defeatthe Stockaders, 59-29, in non-conferenceaction.

and lost 2-0 (114-194, 147-161)Our girls had a fantastic day said Coach Bob Black.Hopefully they learned how good they are, and can be,and see the importance to improve to the level of the elitegirls teams. Alysia bowled great, threw 2 strikes in the 10thframe of the rts game against Eastwood to win by 1 pin.We have to credit all the girls efforts, and Coaches Hol-
lister and Wittman for getting them to the Championshipround.
