    Hi all,

I ran out of stamina as the Latex source reached past 1500lines. I need to put this personal project on hold, andconcentrate on other things in life. In the mean time, Iappreciate comments and criticisms that can helpimproving this presentation. Thank you.

Go rules are few and simple. However, the game can bevery deep and complex, which is a unique property of thisgame.

A Go game starts with the board empty. Stones are placedon the line intersections, not inside the square.

Black plays first, followed by White and the playerscontinue the game by taking alternate turns to move.

Stones can be placed on any unoccupied intersections, except where such move is illegal.

Once placed, the stones can not be moved to otherintersections, only removed from board when they arecaptured.

A game ends when both players consecutively pass on theirturn. This happens when making moves will not gain anypoint for both players.

    Player with more territory wins.

A player may also ends a game prematurely by resigning, which gives automatic win to the opponent.

Whenever time-control is enforced, a game may end wheneither player used up all allocated time. The player losesautomatically.

The goal of the game is to get more territory than theopponent. The player who gets more territory wins thegame.

Large or small win margin does not matter, but can beindicative of the strength difference between the twoplayers.

As the player who starts first, Black has definiteadvantage. For fairness, a Komi rule was introduced whereWhite is given extra compensation points.

Komi is usually 6.5 points; the 0.5 point prevents a draw.

    From previous diagram,

    Black has 77 points,White has 71 + 6.5 = 77.5 points.

    Hence, White wins by 77.5 - 77 = 0.5 points.

A good strategy is to begin the game somewhere near thecorner, then extend to the sides and then reach out to thecenter.

Very often, go games between strong players use thisstrategy.

This is because, making territories is more efficient in thatorder.

However, as mentioned before, players are free to placetheir moves on any unoccupied intersections, as long asthe moves are legal. Legal and illegal moves will beexplained in next section.
