Together, let us make Malaysia a better place

Source: http://www.thestar.com.my/opinion/letters/2015/03/20/waste-act-by-all-states-will-be-beneficial/

Malaysia has been an independent nation for 58 years, but the land she occupies, the climate she enjoys, and all her abundant natural gifts have been around for millions more. We have come a long way not only in physical years but also, regrettably, in its environmental degradation. As the steward-nation of our land, we have to take immediate measures to curb the damage, reverse it where we can, and protect as much of it as we can for our own sake and those who come after us.

FOCUS 19/28ISSUE 12 2015

By this token, the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government is implementing the segregation of household garbage for recycling. This has taken effect on 1st September 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, and Perlis, the signatory states of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672).

This bodes well for Malaysia as it will extend the lifespan of our landfills (which will not last more than another fifty years at the rate we are going), and make available more options for environmental conservation.

In view of the above changes, let us explore some recycling facts and tips.

20/28ISSUE 12 2015FOCUS

Page 21: THE ASCENT: THE CORPORATE HUB OF PETALING JAYA

According to the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleanliness Corporation (SWCorp), the implementation of household waste recycling requires us to separate our waste at home according to their categories, and place them in their designated bin or bag for collection. One or two steps and voila, the country is a safer place to live in!

HOUSEHOLD WASTE SEPERATION

• Paper – receipts, cardboard, newspapers, magazines, drink cartons, and anything made of paper that is dry/ uncontaminated.

• Miscellaneous – pack and separate according to these groups: a. Glass/ ceramic ware (bottles, pots, etc.) b. Aluminium/ metal (such as cans, steel utensils, etc.) c. Electronics (batteries, calculators, phones, wires, cables, lightbulbs, and small electrical items) d. Fabric/ shoes/ rubber/ leather (T-shirts, handbags, sneakers, rubber gloves, etc.) e. Hazardous waste (aerosol cans, insect poison/ repellent, paint cans) f. Bulk items (furniture, bed frames, large electrical items). g. Garden waste (leaves, flowers, etc.)

• Plastic – bottles, plastic bags, and anything else made of plastic (this can include plastic toys and polystyrene food containers – rinsed first).

• Non-recyclables: Residual waste such as food items and soiled/ wet materials like used diapers and tissues. Only these will be sent to landfills.

E-waste is realElectric and electronic wastes such as computer equipment, household appliances, and fax machines should be recycled with special handling methods so that the toxic chemicals they contain aren’t released into the environment.

A list of e-waste collection centres can be downloaded from the website of the Department of Environment: http://www.doe.gov.my/portalv1/en/info-untuk-industri/maklumat-umum-buangan-terjadual/pengumpulan-dan-kitar-semula-e-waste-barangan-rumah/320.

Currently, collection centres are available only in the states of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, and Penang.
