Rules of golf

Situation 1: One ball is found in a water hazard and the other ball is lost.Solut ion: The bal l which was found must be presumed to be the provisional ball.

Situation 2: One ball is found in a water hazard and the other is found in the rough.Solution: You must return to the tee and play another ball. You would be playing 3.

Situation 3: Both balls are found in bounds and (i) both balls are playable, (ii) one ball is playable and the other unplayable, (iii) both balls are unplayable.Solution: If you do not know which one is the original ball and which one is the provisional, accordingly, you must select one of the balls, and treat it as your provisional ball and abandon the other.

A provisional ball is a ball played under Rule 27-2 (to save time) for a ball that may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds.

You are allowed to play a provisional ball until you reach the position where your original ball is likely to be. When the original ball is found (which is not out of bounds), you must abandon the provisional ball and continue to play with the original ball.

If you have played a provisional ball from the tee and it also went into the same area as your original ball; you then realise both balls have the same markings and you cannot distinguish between them, here are the answers to that (Decision 27/11):

EDITORIAL BOARDDato’ M. Harris Kudus (Captain/Chairman)

Chandra Perumal Bernard YongJanet Lee Sharifah Khatijah

The Management Committee has taken many steps to

ensure that our Club will continue to be managed efficiently.

All capital expenditure and future projects are to be scrutinized

and implemented accordingly. In this respect, I am pleased to

report that the three irrigation ponds project at the Putra Course

have been completed on time with no extra costs to the Club! The

final accounts are being prepared and will be soon posted on the

Notice Board in front of the reception area.

The Management Committee wishes to inform members

that the Perbadanan Padang Golf Subang (PPGS), a corporation

under the Ministry of Youth & Sports Malaysia, has written to the

Club wanting us to continue discussing the status of the Club.

They are still saying that certain positions in the Management

Committee shall be their nominees. We have informed PPGS that

any requests made would have to be agreed on and approved

by our members and this would only be possible by holding an

We Can Face The Challenges AheadDato’ M. Harris Kudus

Captain’s Note

We are well into the first quarter of 2009, going through a very tough period as global economic conditions take hold and, without exception, there are certainly affecting Malaysia as a whole. In these trying times our Club has to be very prudent in its financial management,

which may affect our membership transferability scheme. Our management must ensure that all systems and procedures are strictly adhered to and embark on cost-saving measures.

Extraordinary General Meeting. Alternatively, it could be tabled

at the Annual General Meeting of the Club which is scheduled on

21st June 2009. In the meantime, please be assured that to-date

there is no change in the Club’s status and we are in full control.

The Management Committee is always concerned with the

implementation of Club Bye-Laws, especially on dress code while

on the Club’s premises. It is hoped that members give their full co-

operation and advise their family and guests to be properly attired,

especially at the Golfers’ Terrace. Please do not come to the Club

in singlets, sleeveless T-shirts for men, slippers/clogs and shorts.

Currently the Club allows buggies to go onto the fairways (on

the side of the track) when overtaking which, however, has caused

damage to the turf. As such, we are appealing to buggy users to

overtake by using only the rough areas, either right or left of the

track, whichever is applicable, instead of driving over turf. Your

co-operation in caring for the course is gratefully appreciated.

A record number of 46 newly-enrolled members, of whom 27 were by way of transfer, turned out in formal attire at Introduction Night 2009 held on 31st March at Dewan Tunku. The occasion marked their official induction into the KGNS fraternity and presented the opportunity for the new entrants to meet the members of the Management Committee in person.

In his welcoming address, President Y.Bhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas stressed the need for all to observe the Rules and Regulations of the club, both and off the courses. This Putra Irrigation Project will help us achieve our vision of ensuring constant supply of good quality water from our own reserves for irrigation purposes and solve the following water supply problem for irrigation:

Course & Grounds

Update on Irrigation Project at Putra

Completed on 24th February 2009, and taking into account the existing pond (now called “Pond E”) which lies adjacent to Green No:15, KGNS’ water storage capacity in that area of the Course now boosted five-fold, from 8,000,000 to a total of 40,850,000 litres, as follows:-

shortage during dry season;drawing from an unreliable external source of water (Kelana Jaya pond) in terms of quality (deterioration as result of property development) and quantity;maintenance of new pump station, which KGNS built, to draw water supply from MBPJ pond some distance away;paying of electricity to power the two electric pumps.

Tabled at the 2008 AGM by the Course and Grounds Sub-Committee, the Putra Irrigation Project, with an approved budget of RM 700,000, was up and running by 9th December 2008. Scope of works included the construction of four (4) water storage ponds and ancillary works at Holes No: 5 and 7, excluding landscaping and creation of an artificial waterfall.

Club Updates

The latest addition to the KGNS management team comes in the person of Wan Suhaila binti Wan Shamsulbahrin in the position of Administration Manager with effect from 23rd March 2009. Canadian born, family from Pahang (Padang Tengku) and daughter of a former diplomat, Wan Suhaila is a Bachelor of Business Administration graduate from the University of Toledo, Ohio, U. S.A. majoring in Management and concentration in Human Resource Management.

Her curriculum vitae includes stints in the Oil and Gas industry, Media industry, in a head-hunting firm involved in the sourcing and placement of personnel and, latterly, at the Royal Selangor Club, responsible for Administration and Membership. For Wan Suhaila, the paradigm shift from the fast-paced corporate world to the service-biased leisure industry has not been particularly dramatic insofar as both sectors are people-oriented.

To a query from Berita Subang as to reason for joining KGNS, she remarked that, “from my experience in the Royal Selangor Club, I have enjoyed working in the leisure industry, where I get to meet and interact with people of various cultures.” She reckons that a healthy balance can be amicably struck between administration of corporate affairs and that of the services or club culture.

In settling down to the task in her new appointment, Wan Suhaila’s aspirations are to “improve work processes”, and the culture thereof, in KGNS through teamwork and the collective contribution from a cohesive workforce. Also, she opines that there is a need to install a knowledge-based system in KGNS where events and experiences, past and present, may be documented and archived for future incoming or new KGNS staff.

Although it was a few days passed Chap Goh Mei, the Social Sub-Committee still made an effort to have a Members’ Night to celebrate the occasion on the Saturday, 14th February 2009, which happened to fall on Valentine’s Day.

A special gift of mini cakes with icing of a pink rose were also given out to the delight of all the ladies by the Social Chairman, Mr. Peter Murray. Members were invited to a traditional Yee Sang tossing, which was later served to them.

On Feb. 2, 2007, the United Nations scientific

panel studying climate change declared that the evidence

of a warming trend is “unequivocal”, and that human activity has

“very likely” been the driving force in that change over the last 50 years.

The last report by the group, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in 2001,

found that humanity had “likely” played a role.

KGNS’ Bit For

On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2,100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour – a massive collective effort that reduced the city’s energy consumption by 10.2%, equivalent to the effect of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour. With “lights off” for Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House and unique events such as weddings by candlelight, the world took notice. Inspired by Sydney, many major global cities joined in the fray in 2008, turning a symbolic gesture into an international movement. This year’s event took place March 28, 2009 at 8.30pm (Malaysian time).

As responsible citizens of the world, KGNS also contributed, albeit in a small way, by closing down the Karaoke Lounge from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Some members joined in the candle-lit moment next to the Karaoke Lounge for a sing-along session,

Table-TennisFriendly Match

A good number of table-tennis enthusiasts and supporters turned out at the Squash Courts C and D on 28th February 2009, coming together for a friendly match organised by the Recreation Sub-Committee. The event is yet another in the series to promote the indoor sport among KGNS members and their families, for all to mix it up in friendly competition with a dash of fun, regardless of their standard of play!

Participants were divided into teams, with players pitched against others of similar skill. The ensuing match-ups were for singles, doubles, mixed doubles, etc., i.e., something for every paddler, accomplished or otherwise, to get into! Refreshments were served after the games and souvenirs given to all the participants. Our thanks to all who assisted in making the event an enjoyable affair!

start with some warming up for the dancers. By 7.00pm, the hall was already packed to its brim. The Emcee, Louis the Maestro, started the ball rolling, calling out the names of the songs as they played and the line dancers packed the dance floor synchronizing in the steps. It was a beautiful sight to behold.

Lucky ones walked away with table and lucky draw prizes. Special performance by Lim Sae Min, who danced to two contemporary dances had the crowd awed by his slick dance moves. Louis the Maestro had the room laughing in stitches which his comedy. He also impersonated Stevie Wonder and a few other famous artist which delighted the crowd even more.

The Recreation Sub-Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Lim Sae Mina and Louis the Maestro who did their performance in kind, as well as Ms Alycia Long who sponsored the Table Draw Prizes.

Questionnaire Regarding Improvement Plans for KGNS’s LibraryThe Club’s Recreation Sub-Committee is taking the initiative to upgrade and improve the club’s existing Library facilities

so as to provide better service to members and their families. We have observed that the club’s existing Library and Recreation Centre have not been operating in an organised and properly-run manner and are therefore, under such circumstances, unable to provide the standard and quality of service expected of them. In addition to this, the constraints of physical space and a dire need for more current and relevant reading material have literally made it impossible for the library to play a meaningful role as a useful learning centre. It would therefore seem obvious that such state of affair has contributed to the dismal or scant interest in the services that the library currently provides.

We believe that by upgrading the library with improved facilities and a wide selection of the latest book titles and magazines, it will not only better serve members and their families, but more importantly, will promote a culture of reading and a quest for knowledge among members of the club’s community.

To help us achieve the objective stated above, we would appreciate if you could spare some time to respond to the questionnaire below. This questionnaire is intended to gather information, in the form of feedback and suggestions that will help us plan a library that truly reflects the needs and requirements of the club’s members. Renovation of Dewan Tunku The Dewan Tunku is also undergoing renovation

from 1st to 16th April 2009. We regret that functions will be disrupted during this period of closure.

Once the renovation is completed, the Dewan Tunku will serve as an alternative dining hall from 23rd April 2009 onwards until such time the renovated Eagle’s Nest is re-opened.

New Caterer for Eagle’s NestEmamnel Catering’s contract at the Eagle’s Nest ended on 31 March 2009 and,

accordingly, a new tender exercise was conducted by the Club. At the end of the tender exercise, the contract for the dining hall was awarded to a new caterer from the Six Happiness Group of Restaurants.

However, please note that the Eagle’s Nest restaurant will be closed from 1st- 29th April 2009 for renovations to be carried out by the House/Maintenance Sub-Committee.

Note : The kitchen for the Eagle’s Nest has been found to be in a deplorable condition due to lack of proper maintenance of the premises and equipment in the past. As such, the kitchen is also closed for cleaning and servicing from 1st – 15th April 2009, before the new caterer takes over.

The contract for the Japanese Restaurant expired on 31 March 2009 and the Committee has decided to call for a new tender for the Japanese Restaurant, as well as for the Poolside Terrace and Bilik Buaya.

The Poolside Terrace contract is due to expire in May 2009, while operations at the Bilik Buaya are currently managed by the Club.

Advertisements were published to invite qualified candidates to submit tenders for the Restaurant to provide the following authentic cuisines:-i) Japaneseii) Malayiii) Indianiv) Westernv) Nyonya/Peranakanvi) Fusion

The purpose of having a variety of choices instead of just Japanese cuisine is to avoid having to advertise again should there be no taker to run the Japanese Restaurant. This will save time and speed up development.

The F&B Sub-Committee is in the process of evaluating all tenders before making any recommendation to the Tender Board.

In the meantime, the Japanese Restaurant will continue to operate until a decision has been made.

Happenings @ Bilik Buaya...

It was definitely a night to remember, 24th December 2008, when Bilik Buaya hosted a X’mas Eve Dinner for members of the Club. As early as 7.00 p.m., members started rolling in and by 8.30 p.m., the crowd had swelled to about 74 diners, all dressed and geared up for the night.

On the night, diners had the chance to enjoy a delicious set meal of either Italian Goulash or Lamb Shank prepared by the Club’s own in-house caterer, Italianos, whereby the lamb shank took centre stage for the patrons.

The ambience for the evening’s entertainment was set when Frankie Tan took to the stage to entertain members as they dined.
