President.s Page ___________________ _ I hope you are making plans to attend our annual Fall Seminar and Book Fair. We are fortunate to have Cyndi Howells as our guest speaker this year. Genealogy on the Internet changes daily and Cyndi can educate us on how to make better use of this very important resource, while also reminding us of the pitfalls.

The AGS Board of Directors voted to give AGS members a 10% discount on seminar registration and AGS publications. If you have already registered for the fall seminar, you will receive a coupon for the discount amount that may be applied to any AGS publication.

Speaking of publications, the Arkansas Prior Birth Index, Volume 2 is at the binders now and the new revised editions of Russell Baker's Arkansas Tawnship Atlas: A History of the Minor Civil Divisions in Each Arkansas County and From Memdag to Norsk: A Historical Directory of Arkansas Post Offices, 1832-1971 (Post Office Directory) are at the printers. We are also reprinting Masonic Deaths in Arkansas, 1838-1916, by Arlene LaGrone. All should be ready by September tst,

The Priors Project volunteers are already busy working on Volume 3. The contribution these committed volunteers are making to Arkansas genealogical research is measureless and I personally can't find the words to describe their dedication.

AGS has another project in the planning stages. We will be indexing the Arkansas Confederate pensions for a database, which will be uploaded to the Arkansas History Commission website. Suzanne Jackson will be the contact person for AGS.

I would like to point out that you do not have to be on the AGS board to be a volunteer for any of the projects now or in the future. We welcome your ideas for projects that you would like to see

undertaken. We want your participation, the more volunteers we have the more we can accomplish.

The board also voted to bring back the Family History Writing Contest, there will be more on that in future issues of the Arkansas Family Historian.

If your local society is having an ancestor fair or seminar, please send us the information to print in the quarterly and newsletter. If you are in Arkansas or an adjoining state, AGS would like to participate by having a booth at your event.

It has been several years since AGS has participated in a national conference, but Sept. 3,d loo,_6Ih, Gloria Futrell and I will be attending the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference in Orlando, Florida. We will have a booth in the exhibit hall where we will offer our publications and answer questions about Arkansas research. I hope some of you will be there and stop by the booth to say hello. I will report on our experience at the conference in the December issue of the quarterly.

Our new brochure is almost ready to go to the printer, just wait until you see it! It is beautiful!

One last plan in the making that I hope some of you will be interested in. The board voted to p Ian a trip to Salt Lake City in 2004 for AGS members. We would like to know if you are interested, we are still in the planning stages, the dates being considered are December 5-12, 2004, and the price will depend on the number of members that sign up. You can email or write me at the addresses below.

Box 908 ----------------------------------Margie Koutroulis of Livingston, TX, submitted an alert for a Genealogy Scam that appeared in one of the publications she receives. "The old genealogy scam is back www.genseekers.com. Behind the password protection are links to the free genealogy on line. There is no content of their own. In order to get the '5 day free trial' you have to surrender a credit card or bank account number. You have to cancel within ten days or you get dinged. Guess what? The cancellation email bounces. Does this surprise you?

"One person who recently fell for the corne-on had his/her account dinged not once, but twice.

"It is time to remind folks of your state or county mailing lists about these scoundrels. It has been a couple of years since we have mentioned this. Permission is granted to pass this on. (Cal Phillips, List Admin. Rootsweb List)"

We would earnestly request that you assist us in spreading the news of the pending publication of a volume of immense historical value. The Arkansas American Civil War Association is sponsoring the publication of a book which will incorporate brief biographies of the Arkansas men who were involved in the American Civil War ....

The following press release briefly explains how your readers can participate in the solicitation of these Civil War biographies so that their ancestors can be included in this historic publishing effort.

Thank you for your assistance in what we feel will be seen as a major publication in the recorded history and heritage of our State.

For Immediate Release

American Civil War Biographies Wanted

The Arkansas American Civil War Association is soliciting brief biographies, along with photographs when they are available, for Arkansas men who were involved in the American Civil War. Arkansas was a Confederate State. However, all of her citizens did not support the Confederacy, and a large number of men fought for the Union. Their biographies are also welcome, along with those of African American men of that era who may have involved.

The biographies will be published in a limited edition volume, in conjunction with a fourvolume series to document the Civil War in Arkansas. Walsworth Publishing Company, of Marceline, Missouri, has accepted these volumes for publication, and Volume I, Pillars of Power® ... Steps Toward Secession, will be published this fall.

The Association is urging citizens who have information on their ancestors to submit their biographies to enable us to create a fitting memorial to those who believed in ideas and ideals that were larger than themselves. Those men from our past possessed the courage to fight for, and often die, for principles they held sacred. Their sacrifices during the most

important event in our history should not be forgotten, and also their memories should be preserved for future generations. This limited edition publication, to be entitled Lest We Forget ... Arkansans in tile Civil War, will be published in a hard back presentation, on acid free archival paper to preserve the lives and the services of our forefathers.

This volume will be published after the other four volumes in this series, to allow time for those who will join us in this effort to submit their ancestors biographies; to have them formatted in a professional manner so all the stories will be presented in a like manner; and to allow for those who participate to receive proof copies of their submissions to approve.

Submissions may be sent by E-mail to [email protected], or they can be mailed to The Arkansas American Civil War Association, P.O. Box 2004, Jonesboro, AR 72402-2004. Questions may also be submitted to either of those addresses. It is requested that those who submit photographs send copies, and not the original photographs. The purchase of the published volume is not required to participate in this publication to have an ancestor remembered in this special way. However, the Association is certain anyone who has a family member recorded in this volume will decide to allow it to become a cherished family keepsake, and pass it on to those who will come after them.

Jim Lair, a native Arkansan, and the author of four published books that relate directly to the history of Arkansas, will serve as the editor for this project. His latest book, a biography of David Owen Dodd, a 17-year-old young man who was executed in Little Rock during the Civil War as a Confederate spy, received the S. A. Cunningham Award for Literary Accomplishment this year. Other writings have received awards from the Arkansas Historical Association.

Lair has also spent the past 10 years researching and writing the other four volumes to present the first published documentation of the American Civil War as it was fought in the State of Arkansas in the 138 years that have passed this that War ended.

The Association requests that all biographies be submitted by December 31, 2003.

Missing Records

Submitted by Russell P. Baker, 6525 Magnolia, Mabelvale, AR 72103

The following article will serve to show you why Arkansas has such few early records. It was written in 1904:

Rare [Arkansas] Documents Missing (Note: In light of the following article from the Mena, Arkansas Weekly Star, dated Feb. 11, 1904, p. 12, it is no wonder that Arkansas has so few 19th century state records.):

"Continued search in the rubbish pile under the west wing stairway at the [Old State House in Little Rock] has failed to show the existence of any muster rolls of Arkansas troops that served in the Confederate army. These records are needed in order to carry out the work of preserving the names and achievements of the soldiers. It is feared that the documents desired were carted away after the house cleaning in that part of the [old] state house assigned to the governor.

After the adjournment of the legislature last spring, many of the old papers and books, which had been stored on the second floor adjacent to the rooms set apart for the governor, were moved out, evidently being considered at that time of no value. Three wagonloads of the dusty volumes and time - worn papers were hauled away by a second hand [paper] dealer. Inquiry yesterday developed that "the stuff" had been disposed of as so much junk, and shipped sway. These books and documents are now beyond recall.

That portion of the papers and books not hauled away as junk or not left behind to fill the space under the west wing stairway at the capitol, are in Cos Altenberg's office. Mr. Altenberg heard of the disposition being made of the documents, and hastened to the [old] state house in time to save a lot of the papers. Among these are the muster rolls of the Arkansas troops in the Mexican war.

Major S. H. Nowlin resumed yesterday his search for records of the Confederate troops, but, as before, he was unable to find [them]."

THE STORY OF HOT SPRINGS

Hot Springs seems a peculiarly appropriate place for American women to hold a war work convention for the ground is Government Reservation and the first National Park set aside by the United States for the use of all its people. Internationally it has the reputation of being the world's greatest health resort and this reputation would seem to be not unmerited for in all the world's history of beneficient waters there is nothing to compare with the record of the Arkansas Hot Springs. Admitted to be one of the wonders of the world, they gush their one hundred million gallons of water daily at an average temperature of 135 farenheit.

The famous baths are all under the government control and direct supervision of the Secretary of the Interior. Free baths are provided for the poor and profits from the baths of the rich go to improve the Reservation.

Just how many years this 365,000,000 gallons of the only known radioactive waters in the ground have been pouring of course is not known. Since the beginning of time, perhaps. Records, however, go back no further than 1512 when Ponce de Leon called them the Fountain of Youth, the well of living waters. They were forgotten until 1541 when they were rediscovered by Hernando de Soto, and other Spaniard and later found by the French and Canadian missionaries and called by them "the waters which keep away the hand of death". Durbar and Hunter, trappers came upon the springs in 1804, and later Emanuel Prudhomme and John Perciful and Isaac Cates camped near them, renewing their health while they established hunting headquarters.

Medical profiteers began to come victimizing people suffering from disease and hunting cures. In 1832 the United States, recognizing the almost magical powers of the waters and desiring to protect the health seeking public took over the springs, preserving them for all time and establishing the General Hospital for the U S Army and Navy, the greatest institution of its kind in existence.

Hot Springs has a resident population of 16,000 and an annual visiting population of 150,000. It is a town of hotels and outside of New York it is doubtful if better hotel service can be found in the country.

Submitted by Cecil Warren, RR 1 Box 75, Milburn, OK 73450-9731

Genealogical informa tion presented in this article was transcribed from Samuel Armors's "The History of Orange County California with Biographical Sketches of The Leading Men and Women of the County Who have been Identified with its Growth and Development from the Early Days to the Present", Historic Record Company, Los Angeles Ca., 1911 & 1921.

Ramage Family in Southwest Arkansas, ________ _

Submitted by Mrs. Eula Francis Coalston some time ago, who then lived in Humboldt, TN.

Records indicate that the Ramages who settled in the Laurens District of South Carolina migrated from Pennsylvania. During the Revolutionary Period there were two Ramage households in the Laurens District. John Ramage and his wife, Jean Adair, lived in the eastern section of the Laurens District, as did Joseph Ramage and his wife, Elizabeth. John was the oldest of the two but both of these men served as American Patriots during the Revolutionary War. Their relationship is unknown.

The Ramages who settled in Howard and Hempstead Counties in Southwestern Arkansas were descendants of John and Jean Ramage. Benjamin Ramage (1772-1812)was one of the sons of John and Jean Ramage. Benjamin died in Laurens County, South Carolina, in 1812,Jeaving his widow, Eleanor Adair Ramage, to raise their children which included three sons: John Jewel Ramage (1801-1844), (Benjamin Ramage, Jr. (1809-1887), and George Washington Ramage (c1811-c1886) Eleanor Ramage died in Laurens county during the 1830s. Soon afterward, Benjamin, Jr., and George Washington Ramage left and settled in Chambers County, Alabama.

John Jewel Ramage and his wife, Nancy Weyman Adair (1805-1877) remained in Laurens County. Their children were: Margaret Elizabeth Ramage (b. 1828), Leandy Benjamin Ramage (1829-1915), James Henry Ramage (b. 1831), Delilah Holland Ramage (1834-1871), Hannah

Eleanor Ramage (1836-1911), John Washington Ramage (1838-1911), Isaac Weyman Tally Ramage (1842-1862), and Nancy Jane Frances Ramage (1842-1847). John Jewel Ramage died in 1844 and was buried in Duncan's Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in Laurens County. John Jewel's widow lived in Laurens Countyuntil the early 1870s when she and most, if not all, of her children settled near Nashville, Arkansas.

_____________ Diary of Julius C. B. Johnson, Son of John D. Johnson

From the files of the Arkansas History Commission

September 10, 1859. J. C. Johnson started on a trip to Arkansas in company with B. F. Roberts and F. E. Johnson. (B. J. Roberts married Winey Ann Johnson, daughter of Major John D. Johnson, on 20 Jan. 1859. She died of typhoid fever 17 Sept. 1859. F. E. Johnson must be Felix English Johnson, son of Major John D. Johnson and brother of Julius C. B. Johnson)

Stopped first fourteen miles from Reform, Alabama at the residence of William Bears. Traveled the next day to Macon Station on the Mobile & Ohio Ry. Stayed all night with Mrs. Garner who is a widow. Her husband died in July last. Saw nothing of particular importance up to this time to note.

The average price of land between Columbus and Starksville (Miss.) is from $15.00 to $25.00 per acre. Land is post oak and prairie - mostly falling, some fresh. Third night we stayed at Thomas Deloaehes, twenty miles from Greensboro (Miss.) Looked at his plantation - saw some tallest cotton. Judged his crop would average 1200 pounds to the acre. Stayed at brother J. F. Johnson'S twenty-one miles east of Greensboro. (John Forsythe Johnson, son of Major John D. Johnson. John Forsythe Johnson married Nancy Smith Beard in 1856. EJ.) Examined his plantation carefully. He has some fair upland, originally oak and hickory - white sandy land, some very good slough land -

black sandy soil perhaps one-third -some creek bottom land - part glady, white clay - crayfishy - green briary -third rate land. From Greensboro to Grenada is forty miles. We stayed at John R. Tolbert's. From there to Mitchell's. Charleston is thirty-eight miles from Grenada. Some fine lands from Charleston to Helena (Ark.) - is seventytwo miles from Mitchell's to Helena, sixty miles through Mississippi River Bottom. From Helena to Little Rock, Ark. is one hundred twenty miles.

October 24th, 1859. We started from Weir this morning, twenty one miles from Little Rock. We saw some low, flat, generally poor - post oak and red oak lands. Tho we found some good land on the Arkansas River. Little Rock is a pretty place. On the west side is red and rocky for nine miles. We stay tonight at E. Dodd's. From Little Rock to Fouche is thirteen miles - a pretty stream of water, clear with white flint rock bed. North Fork twenty nine miles from Little Rock. Some good bottom lands - at the Saline four forks (now Benton, Ark.) the south fork is forty five miles from Little Rock. Some good tracts of land. Average price is $5.00 to $10.00 per acre. From Little Rock to Hot Springs is fifty two miles. The land rocky - gray rock, flint, slate -land broken. Hot Springs is a pretty place - it is rocky and mountaineous. Rockport is the capital.

G. K. Robinson, Harold, Montgomery County, J. Cunningham, Cedar Glades, P. O. Harold, Montgomery County -twenty nine miles from Hot Springs.

Fifty two miles from Hot Springs to Little Rock - forty five miles from Hot Springs to Mount Ida. Some good bottom land -some ruined by mountains and rocks. From Mount Ida to Murfreesboro is forty five miles. The land is rocky and mountainous - small bodies of land. I don't like this land. From Murfreesboro to Washington is twenty seven miles. (William Needham Johnson, brother of Major John D. Johnson lived near Washington, Ark.) The land is level, tolerable good - some oak and pine -some prairie land. Washington is a pretty place -land deep white sand.

B. B. Jones, Fulton Ark. - E3.50. [sic] Fulton is on the Red River fifteen miles from Washington. Land level - some prairie, some post oak land - some pine and oak. Red River is red.

From Washington to Prairie De Ann is twenty miles. (Jesse Johnson, brother of Major John D. Johnson lived here). Some fine lands here - black sandy, red oak, prairie land - generally level. I like tolerable well. Average price is $5.00 to $10.00 per acres. From Washington to Lewisville is thirty two miles. A flat, poor country, sandy, pine and oaksome cane - black jack. John Steele two miles from Lewisville - bill $3.75. Lewisville the county seat of Lafayette County. A. Byrne - - Grove. Dr. B. Williams -Farmer thirty miles from Lewisville. A. Byrne to Haynesville, La. To J. W. Spinks is fifty five miles.

Claiborne Parrish some good lands - fair upland. Jackson Parrish, land thin. From J. W. Spinks to Monroe, La. Is twenty five miles - some tolerable good land. From Monroe to Richmond is eighty miles. Monroe is the capital of Ouachita Parrish. David Gleason - six miles from Monroe - bill $4.00.

Bill from Reform, Ala. To Washington, Ark. was $21.50, Washington, Ark. to Haynesville, La., $2.75. Haynesville to Plankeville $2.00; Planksville to Vicksburg, Miss. $6.75 - ferry $1.75.

November 23, 1859. Poinchet five miles from Canton, Miss. $1.25 for pony 50 cents. Tonight at Gray's six miles from Canton - bill $1.60.

I landed home November 28, 1859-found all well, or at father's on the evening of the 28th, and came home next morning the 29th . I am now at home warm & raining.

WAY BILL: Monroe, Richmond, Vicksburg, Canton, Louisville, Macon.

From Reform to Andrew Roberts - 250 miles (Andrew Roberts lived in the vicinity of Clarendon, Ark. on the White River, according to above route and mileage).

__________ .Some Students of Old Shiloh School Crawford County, AR -- 1901-1904

Submitted by Jan Eddleman, 1807 Sunshine Mine Road, Hackett, AR 72937

This list of students was found in an old record book of daily attendance from the old Shiloh (District No.5) school east of Uniontown in Crawford County. Note that the school terms generally ran from July to September, which was typical of rural communities of the era. By July, the crops had been "laid by" or planted and hoed and while the farmers waited for them to grow and be ready for harvest the children were sent to school. When harvest began, the children were again needed on the farms and school was dismissed.

The Crawford County Historical Society, PO Box 276, Alma, AR 72921, is the owner of the record book from which the lists were abstracted and it is copied from a handout prepared by that society in the preparation of a Crawford County history. WACO HAMPTON KILLED

Waco Hampton, the young desperado, who waylaid and killed Deputy Marshals Poorboy and Whitehead last fall, was shot and killed last Sunday morning near Tahlequah, by Deputy Marshal Heck Bruner. Hampton was the youngest and most blood thirsty outlaw desperado in the Indian Country, and it is said that in his brief career has committed almost a score of murders, to say nothing of the lesser crimes. The Fort Smith Times gives the following account of the killing:

"The marshals have been pursuing Waco and his gang closely, since the killing of Whitehead and Poboy, and last week Deputy Marshal Heck Bruner with Zeke

Proctor, one of Zeke's sons and another posse, went into the mountains about ten miles east of Tahlequah, where Hampton lived, in search of him. Last Thursday night, they surrounded a house where John Brown was captured with him. In response to their inquiries, he told them where he was to meet Hampton Friday. The marshals kept everyone in the house, where Brown was, under strict surveillance and would allow no one to leave the house. They also kept watch upon the place where Brown had said he was to meet Hampton. Just at dusk Saturday, they were rewarded by seeing Hampton riding along the trail. They made a detour of about two miles and came in ahead of him. They waited until he rode into a little clearing when they ordered him to halt. Like a flash, he sprang from his horse, placing it in front of him, presented his pistol in the

Married Well and Often Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia 1649 -1800 by Robert K. Headley, Jr. (2003), 504 pages and full name index. This excellent hard back book contains many early marriages from the Virginia counties of Lancaster, Northumerland, Old Rappahonnock, Richmond, and Westermorland. This groundbreaking work for the first time brings together

the marriage records - always hard to find in early Virginia - from these counties located along the Potomac River in the northern part of the state. The information is drawn from deed records, wills, probate records, and extant marriage records, as well as previously published marriage lists. Researchers with ancestors in this region should be very pleased with this well written and published book.

This small work (217 pages in soft cover, with maps, photographs, charts, full name index, etc.) contains many tidbits on SC during and after the Revolutionary War. This includes pension rolls; SC women in the Revolution; ancestral rolls of the SC DAR; as well as abstracts of Laurens County, SC will abstracts. Since this little book is in its 8th printing, it is easy to see that this is a classic of SC Revolutionary War era research.

Some Early Tax Digests of Georgia by Ruth Blair (originally published in 1926, recent reprint), about 500 pages, with a full name index. This hardbound work is a reprint of some of the extant early Georgia tax records. It was compiled by the Georgia Department of Archives and History in 1926. Added to it is an index compiled by the W. P. A. in 1938. The earliest existing U. S. Census records for Georgia are for 1820, earlier records having been long ago lost. This work is an attempt to recapture some of

this missing data by using records from some 13 early Georgia counties. They date from 1790 -1818. The average entry gives the name of the taxpayer, information on his or her land, county of resident, poles, slaves, etc. Most are set off into" districts" or townships. A few contain the names of nearby" water courses" and adjacent neighbors. For those with early Georgia roots this book is a must have.
