NOTES FROM YOUR EDITOR

Dear Members of the Arkansas Genealogical Society:

There is no doubt, everyone is helping make our "ARKANSAS FAMILY HISTORIAN" bigger and better each time. You can always depend on at least one complaint tho! This time it was from one of the Associate Editors! Quote: "If this doe.s not" slow down, the index will not go thru the December mails!"

Many questions are being answered this time. If you do not find your friends and relatives listed on membership list for 1975,' better see what the problems is. Tell them, there's not ' much telling what they will miss. And that is true. The information has really poured into our office, and the Membership list is growing so fast, we will soon have to reprint the March issue. Everyone must be working and spreading the news, and filling in the Ancestor Charts and sending them back to be printed into book form (hopefully this fall). Also many have requested the names and addresses of the Historical Societies in Arkansas, and the Genealogical Societies, so you will find the current list of all the known Historical & Genealogical Societies on pages 114 & 115. Write and try to become a member, they might really have interesting articles, you might like to know about (might even be about your ancestors). 200 pages were promised for this years Arkansas Family Historian, if the material was available, and you have made much material available, just keep sending it, as it is your magazine. We will have to reduce the next two issues to normal size, as paper and energy will both come to an end, not to mention our budget. All material is welcome and will find a place as space becomes available, more Family Histories are needed at present. But Bible Records Cemetery Inventories and other articles will also find a place. It is sure nice to have a variety and so far we have been lucky.

All your nice little letters and notes have not gone in the trash (I frame most of them!) Even the "especially enjoyed" or "was delighted to find" have been passed on to the authors. We appreciate all kind words and remarks.

The PRUDENCE HALL CHAPTER - Daughters of the American Revolution, of North Little Rock, are working on a worthy project, and we can all help! They would appreciate anyone letting them know the NAMES of all the CEMETERIES in your County which have been copied. Many are being recopied because there has not been a list available, showing which have already been inventoried. They need first the name of the County, name (or names if the cemetery is known by more than one name), the direction (how to find it from a known landmark). Then if the inventory has been printed and if it on record at the History Commission Office in Little Rock, at a Local Library; if it can be purchased, and if so where, and that addre.s. IN SEARCH OF MY ROOTS

By. Jean Noel Cash, Sr.

When my mother passed away in 1953 I realized how very little I knew of my family history, especially of the paternal (Cash) side, therefore I was determined to search out the family history, beginning with the paternal side, since I believed it would be the hardest in that I knew practically nothing about any of my ancestors. My father had died when I was only three and his father had died when he was only four, therefore the normal means of learning about your ancestors was not open to either of us. The only things known by any member of my family were. (1) OUr grand-parents were Anderson and Elvira Johnson Cash, (2) Our great-grandfather was Isham Cash, (3) Our grand-father had brothers known as "Bud" and ".Med", (4) The Cash family had moved to Clark County, Arkansas from somewhere in the South.

After a few feeble attempts in 1953, I discovered I had neither the time, money or determination necessary to carry out my mission and therefore forgot about the project until 1970, by which time I owned my own business and had the time and money that was required, but still not the determination. In May 1970, I received a telephone call from my neice, Mrs. Myrna Sue Cash McCabe, of Elmira, New York. She asked that I send "everything I knew of the Cash family." This was the incentive I needed.

I went to the D.A.R. Library in Tulsa, Oklahoma where a nice lady loaned me a "How To" book on Genealogy. I began a search of every Volume this Library had on Virginia, the Carolinas, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, and wrote down every scrap of information on any Cash mentioned. I then went to the Arkansas History Commission in Little Rock and began a search of the filmed census they had there. The 1880, 1870 and 1860 Census of Clark County showed that my great-grandfather, Isham Cash, was born in North Carolina and so were the first five of his children, born ca 1837-1844. The next two were shown as born Tennessee ca 1847-50, and the last three born Arkansas ca 1851-58. I therefore concluded, correctly as it turned out, that great-grandfather Isham had been born in North Carolina ca 1814, lived there until ca 1845, moved to Tennessee and lived there until ca 1851, and then moved to Clark county, Arkansas ca 1851 and died there after 1880. Since my notes showed that there were so many Cash Families living in Tennessee, I decided to skip the 1850 census and go to the 1840 Census of North Carolina, because my notes indicated that only one county in North Carolina showed Cahs's living there - Granville County. After only a few minutes of reading the 1840 Granville county, North Carolina Census, I found great-grandfather, Isham Cash listed by name, living in "Dutch District." I then read every Census of Granville County from 1790-1830 and Gopied down every Cash listed,

I had now increased my knowledge to include the names of all my grand-uncles and aunts and where in the South they

Page 9: Family Historian - Arkansas Genealogical Society Historian, if the material was available, and you have made much material available, just keep sending it, as it is your maga zine

70 IN SEARCH OF MY ROOTS (Con't page 2)

had lived before coming to Arkansas, but still did not know who great-grandfather, Isham"s parents were or even who my great-qrandmother was, I then decided that the easiest course was to·go to Raleiqh, North Carolina, and search the Archives there, which I did, I found those Archives there fantastic, Practically every document stored there was indexed and micro-filmed and the personnel eager to help in any way they could. Within two days I had copies of every document available concerning the Cash Family in Granville County and had increased my knowledge of my family considerably, I did not discover, however, who Isham's father and mother were, but did learn that his grand ather was Peter Cash, Sr, and that his great-grandfather was Joseph Cash, sr" from his Will, I also discovered from the Revolutionary War Pension Application of Peter, Sr, that he and his family had arrived in Granville County from Fairfax County, Virginia in 1774.

Upon my return to Tulsa, I contacted a lady in Raleigh, North Carolina, whom I had met at the Archives,' a lady in Richmond, Virginia and the late Frances Bowles, to conduct research for me in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas, and I personally visited and searched the records at the Court House in Arkadelphia, As a result of all this I was able to trace my beginnings to Westmoreland Count~, Virginia to William Cash, who died there in 1708, Despite all the hundreds of documents and bits of information found, however, I still could not determine who great-grandfather Isham's parents were, even though I knew who his grandfather, great-grandfather and 2nd great-grandfather's were,

In 1971 I wrote to the Arkansas Genealogical Society asking that they publish an appeal for help, which they did. I almost immediately heard from a gentleman in San Diego, California who had been researching the Cash Family for over twenty years. Even though he had extensive information on hundreds of the descendants of William Cash of Westmoreland County, Virginia, who he referred to as "The Emigrant," he could shed no light on the parentage of great-grandfather Isham. Between the two of us; however, we did manage to narrow down the possibilities to Thomas and Frances Denney Cash, Bryant and Lucretia Garner Cash, Peter, Jr, and Lucretia Hoofman Cash, James, Sr" and Nelly walker Cash and William and Lucy Lanier Cash,

Matters stood thus until 1972, No amount of endeavor had shed the least bit of light on my problem and I had despaired of ever learnign who my 2nd grea-grandparents were, The one day, out of the blue, I received a letter from a Mrs, Sokol of Little Rock, who it turned out was the neice of my great-grandfather Isham's second wife; Christian Morrison, who he had married in 1883 after the death of my great-grandmother, In this letter she enclosed a Xerox copy. of a scrap of a Bible record that she had found among the belongings of Christian Morrison Cash which had been passed on to her father upon the death of

Page 10: Family Historian - Arkansas Genealogical Society Historian, if the material was available, and you have made much material available, just keep sending it, as it is your maga zine

71 IN SEARCH OF MY ROOTS (Con't page 3)

Christian in 1901, This scrap of Bible Record read. "Isham Cash, son of Will and Lucy Cash died the 22nd day of March 1885," I then knew who my 2nd great-grandparents were. William and Lucy Lanier Cash, married in Granville County, in 1806, Mrs, Sokol had read a back issue of "The Arkansas Family Historian" and had remembered seeing the name Isham Cash somewhere, found the Old Bible, 'which was in terrible condition and in bits and pieces, copied it and sent it on to me, The most remarkable thing about Mrs, Sokol's assistance is that she has absolutely no interest in Genealogy and read our Society Magazine quite by accident while visiting a friend's home, Her curosity did the rest, for which I will be eternally grateful,

The followinq brief history of my family is the result of my endeavors to date, far from complete, but light years more than I knew in the beginning, for which I extend my thanks to the many who assisted me, and special thanks to Mrs, Sokol and "The Arkansas Family Historian" who was most responsible for bringing me to this point in my search,

THE CASH FAMILY - FROM VIRGINIA TO ARKANSAS AND OKLAHOMA

By. Jean Noel Cash, Sr,

I, WILLIAM CASH, the progenitor of the southern branch of the Cash Family, first appears in the records of Westmoreland County, Virginia, 30 May 1694, on which date he was sworn as a grand juror, It is clear from the evidence, however, on this date he owned a large landed estate, therefore probably arrived in that place some years before, It is believed he came to Virginia from England ca 1680, and is therefore referred to by most Cash researchers as "The Emigrant," His date of birth is estimated as ca 1660, His plantation was situated in Washington Parish, westmoreland County, but when King George County was formed from part of Westmoreland in 1720, approximately half of this land fell into each county His first wife is unknown, however he was probably first married ca 1688, His first wife probably died ca 1698 and he was then married ca 1699 to Elizabeth, believed to have been the daughter of his f~iend and neighbor John Skinner, a Quaker, He died in Westmoreland County, Virginia between 16 February 1708, the date of his Will, and 25 August 1708, the date of probate, In his will he named his children aSI

II, JOSEPH CASH, the son of William and Elizabeth Cash, was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, Washington Parish, ca 1706, He was married ca 1727 to Susannah Mason, daughter of George and Ann Mason ,of Prince William County, Virginia and Dunham Parish, Charles City, Maryland, He owned a plantation in Brunswick Parish, King George County until 1733, at which time he was deeded 150 acres on the lower side of Dogue Creek, Turo Parish, Prince William County, by George and Ann Mason "for the natural lives of Joseph Cash, Susannah, his wife, and Ann, their daughter," This part of Prince William County became part of Fairfax County in 1742, and its present location is directly along side of old U,S, Highway 1 (Post Road) south of Alexandria near a village then called Occoquan, Over the years he purchased several hundred acres adjoining this property and by 1752 owned at least 959 acres, Susannah Mason Cash died ca 1749 and he was married ca 1750 to Elizabeth, believed to be a member of the Culverhouse family, In 1772 he was commissioned to survey Dogue' Creek Road, which indicates he had a knowledge of surveying, In 1774 he and most of his family, together with the Hall and Culverhouse families, moved to Dutch District (later Dutch ville), Granville County, North Carolina, where he, his son Joseph, Jr" and grand-son, Joseph Cash Hall, were granted approximately 1000 acres along Picture Branch Creek, He died in Granville County between 23 July 1779, the date of his Will, and August 1780, the date of probate, In his Will he named as his children (except William),

NOTE I It might appear to some that there should be two men names Joseph Cash, father and son, instead of only one, since if only one man sired all these children he would have been about 68 at the birth of the last child, Elizabeth. Despite this, the evidence is clear that there was only one, When George Mason deeded the land to Joseph Cash in 1733 he· named as the wife Susannah and daughter Ann, In his Will of 1779, Joseph referred to Ann as "my daughter Ann Hall," When Joseph's land was surveyed in 1779, Joseph Cash Hall was named as chain carrier on the survey party and Joseph Cash Hall was also granted land on the same date as Joseph Cash, Sr, and Jr., indicating he was over 21 at that time, In every case, his signature on legal documents was Joseph Cash Hall, clearly establishing his relationship to Joseph Cash, Sr. Ann Cash Hall named a daughter Susannah, establishing in all probability that her mother's name was Susannah and Joseph Cash Hall named his eldest daughter Ann, named probably for his mother, Ann Cash Hall. In the 1786 North Carolina State Census, Joseph Cash Hall is shown to have 5 sons and 3 daughters, further establishing his likely birth date as ca 1752, In their Revolutionary War Pension Applications, borth Peter and James, the sons

of Joseph Sr" give as their place of birth Fairfax County, Virginia, and that they moved from there to Granville County, North Carolina in 1774, further supporting the evidence that the Joseph married to Susannah in Fairfax County, Va" and the Joseph married to Elizabeth in Granville County, North Carolina, were the same man, III, PETER CASH, the son'of Joseph, Sr" and Elizabeth Cash

was born 1 January 1756 in Turo Parish, Fairfax County, Virginia, He moved to Granville County, North Carolina with his parents in 1774, He was married to Sarah, thought to be a member of the Anderson Smith family, ca 1780, He served three 3 month tours of duty in the North Carolina Militia 1780-81, during the Revolutionary War, for which he was granted a pension of $30,00 per year, 28 November 1832, After the War ended, he began to buy a great amount of land in Granville County, mostly in Dutch District along Cedar Creek, Existing records indicate that he did not accumulate this land for farming, but rather did so as a business, as in each case he retained the property for only a short time and then sold at a considerable profit, By 1825 he had sold all but 73 acres, which he retained until his death, He died in Granville County in 1846 at the age of 90 and left a most peculiar WILL in which he left his estate to "my friend Elijah Hester, to be used for the benefit of my daughter Lucretia and my daughter-in-law Lucretia, wife of my son Peter, and after their death, to the heirs of their body," The WILL would seem to indicate that of all his children only Peter and Lucretia survived him, His children were,

He was married 28 August 1806 to Lucy Lanier, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Malone Lanier. William Lemuel Cash could possibly be William, the father, rather than the son, In the 1826 WILL of Robert Lanier, his daughter Lucy is not mentioned, but wmy son-in-law William Cash" and "grand-daughters Barshaba and Jennette Cashw are mentioned, indicating that Lucy Lanier Cash was dead at this time, William Lemuel and Phillipina Hoofman Cash are never found in any records of Granville County after the marriage was recorded, indicating they either moved immediately after the marriage or that there was only one William, married the second time to Phillipina Hoofman,

The only evidence to suggest that there were two William Cash's was that the marriage bond of William and Lucy was signed and the other was marked with an ·X".

V. ISHAM CASH, the son of William and Lucy Lanier Cash, was born in Dutch District (Dutchville), Granville County, North Carolina, 1814. lie was married in Granville County, 21 August 1835 to Nancy Haley, the daughter of John Henry and Frances Adeline Haley. He lived and worked with his father, in Granville County until 1845, at which time, probably upon the death of his father, moved to Henry County, Tenn., near his uncle Elijah, where he remained until the early part of 1851. It is believed that his brothers, Dennis and Moses, accompanied him to Henry County, but continued on to Hot Spring County, Arkansas, after a short time. His move from Henry County to Hot Spring County in 1851 was probably prompted by the illness of Dennis, who died ca 1854. He remained in Hot Spring county until 4 October 1858, at which time he purchased 160 acres near DeGray, Clark County, Arkansas adjoining the land farmed by his cousin, James Cash, Jr. (the gri\nd-son of Joseph, Jr" t.he brother of Isham's grand-father Peter, Sr.) Isham and his family continued to live near DeGray until 23 December 1864, at which time he purchased several hundred acres, 2 miles North North East of Antoine in Clark County, and moved there shortly after. Nancy Haley Cash died in 1881/82 and in 1883 he deeded all but 160 acres to his son John Henry Cash, and was married 28 Auc:!ust 1883 to Christian Morrison. He died at his home near Antoine, 22 March 1885. The children of Isham and Nancy Haley Cash werel

QUERIES The writing of letters and queries has been covered in

this column before but it seems it needs repeating. (1) SASE - Self ~ddressed §.tamped l!i.nvelope. I ha,vc received

complaints that so many did not include these when they seemed to expect a reply in writing to our querists. Surely if you expect an answer you would expect to pay postage.

(2) '::ho, "There, Hhen and What. V!hen you write your letters and queries please state these facts. One lad~r tells me she promised to answer all letters but many were so vague and especially one that rambled on and on and she just could not figure out the information she had or what she wanted. I can believe that for I received a six page letter from a lady that lost her mother when she Vias an infant and she would like to find her mother's family. Sht; wrote six pages and never gave her mother's name.

(3) Make your queries short. Give the basic facts to obtain the information you need. If you feel you have informa tion that should be included but it will make ~he query very long why not consider writing a short feature article?

(4) In your letter writing it is also better to keep your letters short. It is better to write more letters that make them so long they will be pitched aside.

(5) Once ae;ainllill - Put your name and address, vlith ZIP CODE on each page of the letter. I hate to dig in the waste basket for lost addresses and often it.is too late.

(6) Keep them coming. This is your magazine, too, and it will be as good as the material we receive.

The Genealogical Assistance Committee will answer all letters enclosing SASE. We do not offer free research. Send tOI Mrs. Leister E. Presley Mrs. Willma H. Newton 1708 ','lest Center P.O. Box 41 Searcy, Arkansas 72143 Hampton, Ar]cansas 71744 ( for North Arkansas) (fro South Arkansas)

CROWLEY Mrs. James R. Earle, RFD t 1, Centralia, Illinois 62801 - I would love to uncover any record of one

particular person who was a resident of Scott co., Ark. This person was Margaret (called Maggie) Crowley, and was the daughter ot Dennie James and Hanora Ronan Crowley. She was born in England in either 1851 or 1854 and Came to America with her parents to Montgomery Co., Ill., in 1859. She later moved with them to Hickman Twp., Scott Co., Ark., in the 1870's.

Her mother Hanora, died there on 16 June 1880, and is buried at the Catholic Cemetery, Ft. Smith, Sebastian Co., along with another daughter Mary Ann, who died in 1880 or 1881, According to a document I have, Margaret died very soon after her mother, in Arkansas. The parish records in Ft, Smith nor their cemetery records, do not show Margaret, Also the search of County and city records at Ft, Smith were negative, In addition to this I have searched the records at the Waldron Courthouse with no results, The possibliity that Margaret may have married and is therefore buried under a name different than Crowley haS been mentioned, Again, no record at the Waldron Courthouse, Since I am particularly interested in this ancestor, because I am the fourth Margaret Crowley, that I have discovered so far, I am wondering if anyone can assist me in any way, Any assistance will be greatly appreciated,

EMRlE P. K, Blumer, Rt. 9, Midland, Mich., 48640 - My mater-nal grandfather, CHARLES EMRlE, b. about 1840, perhaps

in England, He died sometime between 1905 and 1925, possibly in Ft. Smith, Sebastian Co., Ark., or some other town in Ark., or Mo., or Kansas. He may have been a Confederate or Union or perhaps a British Soldier. An old letter indicates that a "Charlie" perhaps Charles Emrie) received a pension in about 1907. But U.S. pension records do not contain his name, He was a limestone quarry manager in 1880-84, and also carved inscriptions on limestone tombstones, also did copper plate engravings. He may have been married before he married my grandmother in 1882, in Humboldt, Iowa. I have found the name EMRIE (an unusual spelling) in St. Louis, Kansas city, Mo., and Denver, Colo.

Incidentally; I can probably help persons interested in REMPEL and BLUMER family lines.
