Spring! It’s here! Well it’s supposed to be anyway and officially it was as of March 20th. The only thing I can say is if it’s here then why am I still freezing my butt off? But it sure does beat sub zero weather! Baseball, soccer, softball and all of the other spring activities are starting to ramp up and we as a Chapter are starting to wind down for the year. The May meeting will be our last organized meeting and along with that comes the dreaded Elections! Our last meeting will be in June and as every-body knows it will be held at the golf course (Chad will dispute the fact that this meeting is not organized, just ask him! In fact this is a very intensely organized meeting and Chad and the Golf Committee deserve a huge amount of credit for all of the time and effort that is put into making our Golf Outing one of the best in the Society.).

Some Chapter news: It is the Central Ohio Chapter’s turn to host the Region 2 president’s meeting this year. The meeting will be held the first weekend in June which is June 5th and 6th. The president’s meeting committee, with Hanse Cromer as the committee chair, is hard at work planning the event. We will need volunteers to man the host reception table at the hotel to greet the other Chapter attendees and to volunteer their vehicles (and themselves obviously) to provide transport for the activities on Friday night the 5th and to help with the meeting on Saturday

Spring has arrived and the robins are back. Soon it will be summer. And, when you think about summer, what comes to mind first?

That’s right. It’s the ASPE golf outing.

Our outing this year will be held on Tuesday, June 23rd, again at the Golf Club of Dublin. Make arrangements for the day off and join us for the best deal in a business/social out-

ing in central Ohio.

We’ll have a shotgun start at 10:00 A.M. However, get there early and practice your game on the free driving range or putting green. As your group passes the 9th hole, stop at the outdoor grill for a fresh sandwich

and beverage.

After golf, join everyone for the famous ASPE

Happy Hour, followed by a delicious dinner.

To wind up the day, we’ll give away some

fabulous prizes, sure to please you.

What’s the cost of this super day of golf and

fellowship, among industry associates?

Chad Dupler Vice President Membership

VP Membership—Chad Dupler

Greetings Membership,

Everything going good? Spring has sprung and so has my hibernating “honey-do” list. That’s ok, if it means warmer weather. I’ll take it.

Not much happening on the membership front nationally that I’ve been made aware of. We currently have 5,814 members worldwide. That’s down 32 members from a year ago and over 580 members from 5 years ago. That’s 10%. Pretty substantial drop I’d say. That also means that society has lost in membership revenue about $101,500.00 since then. That means that they, like us, have had to do more with less. Get more creative. Think outside the box. Society has. Did you know that as a mem-ber you have never had more opportunities and information from ASPE than now. Right at your fingertips!

Locally our numbers over that same 5 year time period have been extremely consistent. We’re

up 2 members from a year ago and sitting at the same member count as we were 5 years ago, 75. There’s a lot to be said for consistency. Stands the test of time, right?

Congrats go out to Jerry Capriotti at Dynamix. He was our “Free Lunch” winner at our meeting earlier this month. Membership has its privileg-es. You a member?

The golf outing is a month and a half away. Get you foursome together and get signed up. Hey all you engineers, get your firm be a sponsor. Eric Leman with Heapy is challenging your firm to step up and support your chapter at this year’s outing by being a sponsor. He’s put his money where his mouth is by sponsoring a hole. You can too. Fill out the form in this newsletter and get it in to us.

Yours in Membership,

Region 2 Affiliate Liaison —- Dann Holmes

Region 2 Affiliate Liaison Report

Last month at this time, the entire ASPE Region 2 was in an Arctic Freeze, a Polar Vortex, a Si-berian Express, I could go on and on. I think it’s safe to say we’ve weathered that storm; spring is officially here and it’s time to move outdoors.

Grab your golf clubs! Many of our chapters are hosting their annual golf outings soon. I wrote about most of them last month as well as some exciting tours. Please check your local chapter website or better yet, attend this month’s meet-ing for details. I for one am planning to attend the W MI ASPE tour of Bell’s Brewery on April 8th. Don’t worry, I’m the designated driver.

Speaking of warming temperatures, I was fortu-nate to attend NPE2015: The International Plas-tics Showcase in Orlando, FL the week of March 23rd. It was hot and humid; it rained eve-ry day but I stayed dry. Why? Because, I was either in a hotel, working a booth or walking over the 1.06 million sq ft of exhibitor floor space spread out across two halls. Talk about sore feet.

The event drew more than 65,000 visitors, 2,000+ exhibitors, a record 43 percent of them were from outside the US. Putting this into per-spective, it is roughly equal to AHR. The show is held every three years. When the event re-turns in 2018, it is expected to be the third larg-est of all the events in the US.

Why plastics? Well, because plastics are in every part of our daily life. Leaving the automo-bile, medical, aerospace and food industries aside, plastics are used heavily throughout the plumbing and heating industry.

Consider the wide use of PVC, CPVC, PE, LDPE, HDPE, PE-RT, PP, PP-R, ABS and PEX. I’ll bet at least one of these pipe & fitting systems are used on every project you come in contact with.

For any type of plastic material, there are of course “ingredients”. Lots of ingredients! These materials along with the wall thickness make up the unique properties of a piping system. Does it bend easy or is it rigid? Which is better? Does it matter? How does it hold up when subjected higher temperatures? What about acid waste?

As most chapters will soon be thinking about topics for next year maybe this would be a good one for an ASPE presentation? If you’d like to know more about this topic and the testing that is required for plastic pipe and fittings, let me know. I’d like to expand on this further.

Let me leave you with one last thought on plas-tic pipe. This year marks the 50th anniversary of NSF/ANSI 14 - Plastics Piping System Compo-nents and Related Materials.

Happy Birthday!

(8am – 4:30-5:00pm). Anyone who would like to volunteer please contact Hanse, myself, Chad, Brad or Tom. More information to follow. All of the volunteers will receive a free dinner on Friday night and/or lunch on Saturday.

As you know elections are fast approaching and will be held at our May meeting. They will be just a little different than in years past. The Board voted unanimously to make two changes starting with this year’s election cycle. The Board voted to change the length of the Board members terms from the current one year to two year terms. This will put us on the same cycle that Society Board members are elected, but on opposite years. It also has the benefit of us not having to scramble to find members to run for the Board and also hold an election every year. The other change the Board voted for was to add the Board position of Vice President of Education. This has been a Board position for a number of years now, but not a re-quired position for our Chapter because of our Chapter category based on the number of members in our Chapter. The Board felt it was time to add this position so that we could better serve the Chapter’s members with quality education opportunities and to oversee the Chapter Scholarship fund. With that being said we are looking for a member to volunteer to run for the position. Please contact any Board member if you would like to run. The Vice President of Education responsibilities will be essentially creating education programs in the form of seminars for the Chapter membership and overseeing the Chapter’s Scholarship Fund.

Registration for the 2015 ASPE Technical Symposium is now open. The Symposium is being held in St. Louis this year at the Hyatt Regency at the Arch. The room rate is $129.00 a night. A couple of new features this year in addition to the technical sessions will be the AYP Professionals Leadership Conference and networking event and a product show. For more information and to register for the

(Continued from page 1) Symposium, go to aspe.org/2015-ts-home-

page.

Technical articles are now being sought for the next edition of ASPE Journal. ASPE is looking for in-depth, non-proprietary technical articles on plumbing system design topics for its mem-bers-only ASPE Journal. To submit an article or for more information, contact [email protected].

The next Certified in Plumbing Design Techni-cian (CPDT) will be held at testing sites across the country on October 29 – 30, 2015. Registra-tion will open in July.
