There were almost 40 people in attendance to listen to Roger Lehman from the City of Elyria talk about these devices and hear of his personal experiences with them. Roger had plenty of great stories to tell us and hopefully we all learned what not to do when applying these devices. You just had to be there to feel his passion for his profession. Thanks Roger for a very enlightening and entertaining seminar. We were fortunate to witness the installation of the 2007-2008 ASSE Chapter Officers at this meeting also. ASSE International President Robert Cross and Executive Director Shannon Corcoran were in attendance and Robert issued the Oath of Office to all of the new Chapter Officers. Congratulations to the new Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE Board! I would like to thank Tom Campbell of Campbell Equipment, John Griffin of the Libb Company, Ken Kerr of Kerr Marketing and Gregg Melfe of Midwest Spec for presenting tabletops at the January meeting. We had an opportunity to see their latest backflow devices on the market and discuss their application with these gentlemen. Thanks for showcasing your products and supporting ASPE. The Chapter is finalizing plans with Noveon to tour their facility on Brecksville Road (Route 21) in Brecksville on Wednesday, February 21 st at 3 PM so please pencil in the date. This tour will be in addition to our regularly scheduled meeting. Once all of the details have been worked out, we will pass along the information to you. The 2007-2008 Cleveland Chapter Handbook is complete and has been sent to the printer. We have spent many hours updating this latest version and look forward to distributing the book to all of our members. We anticipate distributing the handbook at the February meeting. To help with costs, I am asking that at least one member from each firm attend the meeting so that they can take back copies of the Handbook to their fellow members. If you or a representative of your firm cannot attend the meeting, a copy of the Handbook will be mailed to you. The new Handbook insert that you receive will be shrink wrapped and will replace the old insert in its entirety. We are asking all of our members to please reuse their existing binder to help save the Chapter the expense of purchasing new ones. If your binder is in need of repair, please let me know and we will gladly provide a new one to you. For all of our new members that do not have a copy of the Handbook, you will receive a complete Handbook with binder. At the 2006 Convention in Tampa, Society gave away thousands of prizes, but not all of them were claimed. Society offered those prizes to the local Chapters across the country and I put in a request to have some of them sent to our Chapter. Recently I received three large boxes full of knives, coffee mugs, travel bags, multi-purpose tools, etc. and I would like to distribute these prizes to our members, but there is a catch.

From the Presidents Desk:

It was great to see so many people attend our January meeting on Backflow Preventers. There were almost 40 people in attendance to listen to Roger Lehman from the City of Elyria talk about these devices and hear of his personal experiences with them. From the Presidents Desk (Continued): We are going to hold a membership drive and give away the prizes to those Chapter members who participate. This is going to be very simple, all you have to do is be a member and bring a colleague who is interested in Plumbing Engineering to our next meeting on February 7th. The member will receive their choice of available prizes and the colleague that they bring will also have their choice of available prizes. The only other catch is that you must make an RSVP prior to the meeting for yourself and your colleague. It is my understanding that the Plumbing Engineering Design Handbook, Volume 2 has been printed and is in the process of being sent to Society. Once Society receives the books from the printers, they will be forwarding a copy to you. Society is looking for someone from Region 2 (thats us) to serve on the National Education Committee. If you are interested in serving on this Committee or any other Committee, please let me know and I will put you in contact with the appropriate people. Check out the Chapters website at www.clevelandaspe.org . The latest newsletter and Chapter information is posted on the site. Dont forget, we need to provide an accurate head count to Harrys Steakhouse for those who will be attending the next Plumbing Training Session. Please send in your RSVP via email to Kevin Noble at [email protected] no later than noon on Friday, February 2nd. If you do not RSVP by this time, we cannot guarantee that a meal or handout will be reserved for you. Thanks again for your cooperation. See you on the 7th! Mitch Clemente, CPD President, Cleveland Chapter

From V.P. Technical: I would like to thank Roger C. Lehman, Supervisor, Backflow Division City of Elyria for being our guest speaker at the January 10, 2007 training session. The topic of the seminar was Backflow Devices. The presentation stressed the importance of contacting the local authority during design, ensuring that the backflow devices are ASSE certified, and meet AWWA standards. Roger also described from previous experience how home owners and plumbing contractors alike have violated backflow procedures and how they were penalized for doing so. Please visit www.cityofelyria.org for more information on backflow devices. The February 7, 2007 seminar topic will be Water Treatment and Softening. The guest speaker will be Nitin Chauhan, Commercial Engineer of Culligan. Nitin has over 11 years of professional experience in the water treatment industry. Please confirm your reservation for this seminar by noon of Friday, Februay 2, 2007 with Kevin Noble at [email protected]. If you have any questions and/or comments about the seminars, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. John A. Varga V.P. Technical, Cleveland Chapter

Unleash the Power of Your Professionalism

The Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) program is an international certification program for engineers and designers of plumbing systems. Successful completion of the CPD examination confers upon the candidate the designation “Certified in Plumbing Design” or CPD. The certification program provides the profession, the plumbing industry, and the general public with a single, comprehensive qualification of professional compe-tence for engineers and designers of plumbing systems.

The CPD:• Identifies those individuals who fulfill prescribed

requirements of experience, responsibility, and con-duct.

• Provides a standard for educational programs in plumbing engineering.

EligibilityTo be eligible to take the CPD examination, a candidate must possess a minimum of four (4) years of practical experience in a position of responsibility for the design of plumbing systems and possess a baccalaureate degree in a field related to engineering. In lieu of an accredited degree, a candidate may substitute up to an additional four (4) years of practical experience in the design of plumbing systems, for a total of eight (8) years, or be granted a credit of one-half year of practical experience for each one (1) full year of edu-cation in an accredited curriculum related to plumbing engineering.

The CPD designation is achieved through successful completion of the comprehensive CPD examination and maintained through a biennial recertification program.
