The Allure of the FigureThe R. Alexander group exhibition “The Allure of the Figure” is a collection of select works by leading international artists, including Jose Borrell, Javier Arizabalo, Roman Frances, Giner Bueno, Oscar Mersch, and sculptures by Paige Bradley and Marton Varo. The exhibition showcases the gallery’s diverse collection and various repre-sentations of the human body. The show will be on display at R. Alexander Fine Art
from March 20 to April 13, 2015.
The works by Jose Borrell and Roman Frances are infused with a dreamlike quality, given their surreal surroundings of gardens and floating drapery. These works are
meant to place the viewer in a tranquil state of mind.
Works by Javier Arizabalo emphasize the formal qualities of the body via a hyper-realist painting style. The viewer is caught up in the intricate details of the skin, the contrasts between light and shadow, and the realistic qualities that transform paint
into flesh.
In contrast, Paige Bradley portrays the human form beyond the physical - for Brad-ley, the body is a vessel for expressing greater emotional ideas that transcend form. The body is not only a metric for physical human beauty but a structure that is useful for expressing human emotion, vitality, and energy. Bradley states, “The figure, to me, is the perfect vehicle to communicate the human condition.” Her dynamic sculptures portray figures in action, pushing physical limits, to convey the determi-
nation and inner strength of each individual.
Impressionistic works by artists such as Oscar Mersch and Giner Bueno highlight scenes from everyday life, depicting what is seemingly mundane - walking under an umbrella with someone, or a mother walking on the beach with her child - as an
intimate look at life and the personal connections we have to those around us.
