Editor’s Note

For the three young men featured on our cover today, life just took a new turn – a turn unto fame lane! Kelvin Ayanruoh is the winner, Malaki Osita and Julius Fakta are first and second runner-ups respectively of the ‘Glo Dance With Peter’ competition which wrapped last week.

After months of gyrating, fox-trotting and everything else in-between, Kelvin Ayanruoh emerged winner. Like one who just touched the stars, he is excited about the chance to fame and so are we. Pamela Echemunor met the three at the entrance of Dream Studios. Only time can tell how fast they ride up this secluded and exclusive lane. Please turn to pp 8-10.

On our fashion pages, designers have revealed to Allure the face of fashion come 2016. Read their forecast on pp. 6-7. Yemisi Suleiman, in another breath, rummages through our wardrobes to show what to ditch and which items to keep in 2016. See p. 4-5.

Last week was Christmas week. But, there is yet to be any of the fervour that once greeted the season. For me, whatever celebration I may have planned was blighted by the whiplash that struck me. A pain that refuses to go away; each time I recall the incidence that should never have happened {now}. If only ...

By the time we meet again, it would be 2016! I hope we all make it. I hope to see you on the other side of new beginnings.

Enjoy the last sup of 2015! Happy New Year in advance!

With the holiday party season in full swing, spending on that skirt is starting to feel even more tempting. Because who has time to change into a cocktail dress after work? Other designers have been proposing metallic skirts for day and night too, fromLoewe to J.Crew.

WEEKLY FAB LIST !By - Fatima Garba

ALLURE’S

Looking for the latest trends to transition into? Hopefully our weekly fab list will help you decide the major trends to keep you looking fab all day and all week.

The rivet took center stage on the runway, in an echo of the galactic trend seen everywhere this season. Circuitry-inspired at Mugler, Star Wars-style at Anthony Vaccarello.

RIVET TREND

Seen at Ralph Lauren, Valentino and Chloé, full-length velvet is big for this season. Long, flowing gowns for the evening or skirts for a striking silhouette that looks set to light up your wardrobe.

VELVET TREND

A trend that just will not go away, capes were back on the catwalk in a big way this season. Valentino has always made a strong argument for this classy, yet sometimes cumbersome outerwear. But this time some of the best, and perhaps most user-friendly, options came down the Michael Kors runway. If you can pull them off, capes are great fashion statement.

CAPES

No fashion roundup of trends would be complete without a look at the always inventive footwear that designers offer up die-hard fashionistas each season. This time they were treated crystal-covered heel-less heels, pink pompons on silver sandals and sexy knee-high black lace-ups just to name a few. This selection is only a handful of all the kooky and original shoes that are displayed, designs that always make fashion a feast for the eyes…and feet!

WHAT TO DITCHWhat To

The year 2015, may not have been a year of innovative trends but it certainly held its own. And as with any year, some not so pleasant or overtly repeated fashion trends cropped up along with some we hope will stick around. The very nature of a trend means that it will certainly fade. Fashion and beauty trends tend to have a short shelf life and as the New Year approaches, we can only evaluate what’s hot and what’s not for the following year. Here is hoping that 2016 brings with it a breath of fresh fashion air. So, before overhauling your wardrobe, take a look at our round up of fashion trends to ditch, and the ones to keep in 2016.

By Yemisi Suleiman

Bandage DressIt’s time this trend be put to rest once and for all. Come 2016, we encourage that everyone leave this trend for something a little more sophisticated.

Denim LeggingsTo clarify, we are not talking about jeggings, which have gotten more jeans-like in look and leggings-like in feel over recent years.

Sheer Dresses The sheer dress also known as the naked dress, garnered numerous headlines in 2015. It was daring, stylish and refused to be denied. Trends as bold as this, tend to have a time limit and it could be time to let a new dress have its way.

PlatformsThis shoe trend is actually quite dangerous to walk in. This is another trend that could be described as an acquired taste and won’t be missed too much by the general public.

FASH ION

PeplumThe peplum has been around a long while, it is time to let go now, for more structured silhouettes.

Tulle SkirtIt is one trend that we love as it’s quite flattering, but not everyone can pull it off.

The mirrored glasses should perhaps, take a break and make a surprise comeback in the years to come. For now, we will stick to our matte frames.

Structured silhouettes were pretty popular with designers, especially in the form of tops and jackets. So, ditch the slouchy tops and dresses next season as a structured top is a great way of putting together a polished look with minimal effort.

Structured Silhouettes

JumpsuitsSensually cut jumpsuits, abundant in choice collections and perfect for evening, added a new dimension to the runways, telling us 2016 is the year to forget about your dresses and get glam in a different silhouette.

Cross Chain BagsThey were big in 2015, and the chain bag might just be the easiest place to reinvent yourself in the New Year.

PREDICT TRENDS FOR 2016Designers Assess 2015,

The year 2015 has not been much of a fashion year really. Several events that should hold were postponed. 2015 as you know is an election year so there were many issues. If you look at the AMVCA of this year, people didn’t put in much effort in terms of fashion. So you find that the Ankara print held sway, call it the norm. There was also the introduction of baby laces. For 2016, people will make effort to dress better. Prints will continue to trend and this is because they seem to be the affordable fabric now. So more people will buy for aso ebi . With Vlisco establishing officially in Nigeria, I want to believe they will consider cheaper variety of their fabrics and that will mean more people print. I rally cannot predict any thing new except to say that more people will embrace comfortable gowns made with prints and trousers also made with prints. For those who want specific designs, those of us who specialize in couture will be available to give clients the specific trends that they want.

The year 2015 has been an interesting year fashion wise. In spite of economic hardship, designers and fashionista have ensured that trends hit both runway and real way.We saw a few trends move from. 2014 to this year while coral and teal like a colossus stood tall as the dominant

colour of the year. Now as 2015 rolls by and 2016 looms before us, designers look to the future and predicts what trends to expect in the New Year. From their thoughts, it sure promises to be an exciting year fashion wise.

Comfortable gowns will trend- FRANK OSODI

Fashion 2015 has been a great year but as you know, fashion is dependent on the economy and the economy has not been rosy; but we’ve been able to balance fashion and the economy to sustain ourselves. That way, it’s not been bad, but it can be better.Basically, 2015 saw a lot of Dansiki and Agbadas especially the short, smart ones coming back, into fashion. Men have also rocked the Ijebu multi coloured cap. For the women, we’ve had sheer transparent, net dresses trending. We’ve also had a lot of sequins dresses, the blings, all the shiny stuff. For 2016, I can predict a lot of the 60ws trends coming back into fashion. There are also some trends that will be carried from 2015 into 2016 because they are classics. They will never go out of trend.

I think the economy affected a lot of purchasing power. The banking regulations this year did not help matters even though it is to help our economy in the long run. Because of these issues, experimenting and exploring was reduced if not put on hold. However, 2015 saw a lot of organza cut out and flowery fabrics. But I think the year 2016 will be full of clear directions of where we want to go with our fashion and ideas will be executed. So, fresh ideas will definitely be brought to bear after this rest period. I predict a lot of old school reinventing itself as fresh trends.

The year 2015 has been an interesting fashion year. A lot of people are getting more creative. More designers are emerging and that shows we are excelling, and a lot of people are taking this profession very seriously not just as entertainment, but as a business. For next year, I think we are going to fall back on the 60s and 70s again for inspiration. I see the Afro hair and wide-leg pant coming back into

fashion but with little modifications here and there. It’s the way with fashion, it goes and comes. A whole lot of trend will continue into next year. I see the crop top continuing for young people. I believe 2016 is going to see more of comfort; people would rather have clothes that are easy and comfortable to wear. Pleated skirts, gathered skirts, maxis, lace and Ankara mixed etc. I also see us going globally appealing, using our indigenous fabrics to do globally acceptable designs.

The year 2015 has been a very creative one for the fashion industry because people are looking to the 60s and 70s for inspiration. Most of the designs this season drew inspiration from the 60s which made a lot of sense. You know you can draw inspiration from any source, you take 60s now and next season, you take another decade making people uncomfortable in their wardrobes. When you feel that way, you keep going to shop for new things. That is the secret of fashion. For 2016, you will have a more fitting silhouette. You won’t have a dead silhouette like you had in 2014 to 2015. For us in Nigeria, the bustier will remain a classic for women. Our women find it really interesting because of its packaging benefit and they will not let it go. Our women also want their clothes to be next to skin and for those who have developed the habit of working out, dieting and eating right, would love body hugging clothes that will bring out the shape they’ve worked so hard to achieve. For the men, there will be more men wearing hats. I see the one button suit going to two buttons. The senator suit will continue to trend in 2016 because this is our own thing. The same goes for agbada. We have the casual Dansiki that you can rock on a Friday night out and it still makes a lot of sense because you

will have it more fitting than what we used to have.

Senator suit will continue to trend. - MODELA

Kelvin AyAnruoh

They came, they saw, they conquered! The first season of the ‘Glo Dance with Peter’ competition is finally over and 24-year old, Delta State born Kelvin Ayanruoh emerged victorious at the finale. The competition, which was sponsored by telecommunications giant, Glo, began in

August. The company sponsored the show to promote dance culture among Africans and to promote those who would want to go into dance professionally. Auditions were held by Kaffy, Peter of P-Square and Don Flexx who travelled across Nigeria and to Ghana to find qualifying candidates.

After eleven rigorous episodes, the judges pruned the number of contestants to the final seven who battled it out in the grand finale. During the final episode, Kevin emerged winner, leaving Maly and Julius trailing in second and third place respectively.

Other contestants who made it to the finale included Amazing Amy, Da Octopus, G-Xtreem and C-Fly who were voted fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively by followers of the show. These four received consolation prizes from Glo. Guests in attendance also received Glo goodies.

By Pamela Echemunor

When 24-year Old Kelvin Ayanruoh was announced winner at the just concluded

‘Glo Dance with Peter’ competition, he was spellbound. The Delta State indigene is the second of four boys and loves dancing. A student of Theatre Arts and Cultural Studies at the Nassarawa State University, he says that aside from dance, he also loves soccer and singing.

Kelvin took home a whopping 3 million naira cash prize and a Toyota RAV4. He will feature in P-Square’s next music video. Here’s what he had to say.

Congratulations on winning. How does it feel?I can’t even explain how it felt. I was frozen stiff

when they announced me winner. I was speechless and I am very happy.

How long did you train when you got the call back for the competition?

Truthfully, I really didn’t train. I just had two weeks of rehearsals with my group and we went on to audition. I ended up being the one here as a solo act, although we made it as a group. The name of my group is “The Elevatorz”.

What was the experience like for you in the competition?

The experience has been really great; it has been a wonderful journey from the audition stage down to the final. It’s one I won’t forget in a hurry; although, we all had a few troubling stages. I struggled a lot with some of the dance styles thrown at me because I wasn’t able to achieve them perfectly, being more of a hip-hop dancer. All in all, I would just say I’m thankful for it all.

How long have you been a dancer?I would say all my life, although I started dancing

professionally six years ago.

Have you been in any major professional dance competition before now?

Yes, I was in the ‘Maltina Dance Hall’ competition. I partook in a dance competition in South Korea, ‘Nigeria’s Got Talent’ and ‘Malta Guinness Street Dance’.

Who was your favourite judge?I would say Don Flexx. He’s my mentor and one

of my favourite judges because he looks at your

dance and tells you the truth. If you’re doing something wrong, he tells you straight up and if you’re doing something right, he tells you as well; so, really, he’s my favourite judge.

What will you take away from this experience?I have even taken a lot from this experience

because I never imagined that my life would lead me up to this moment. I never imagined that I would do something like this; doing various dance styles and so on. Look at where I am today! This experience has imprinted on me so much that I can barely put it in words.

What will you do with the prize money?

(Laughs) I have some things mapped out to do, starting with giving 10 percent of it to charity. Then, I will enrol in a proper dance school. As for the rest, I’ll figure it out later (laughs).

What was the highlight for you during the competition?

I have about three highlights that I will remember for the rest of my life. First, the day I did my ninja routine. It’s special because that was the first time a judge stood on his chair for me. The second is the semi-finals where it was announced that I earned one of the highest votes and, right now, winning the competition.

Was there any person in the house who intimidated you?

No, not really. I felt like I worked hard and made it and wasn’t intimidated by anyone.

What do you have to say to Globacom for creating this one-of-a-kind platform?

I want to say a ‘big thank’ you to Glo for this opportunity and I hope they continue to do this because, it will help a lot of talented people out there to achieve their dreams.

REPORTAGE REPORTAGE

Page 10: Allure 27 December 2015

How long did you train when you got the call back for the competition?

I started training two weeks after hearing about the competition, just before I auditioned; I wanted to ensure that I was in top notch shape.

What was the experience like for you in the competition?

The experience was amazing! Right now, I am really inspired because, along the line, I got a phone call from a 5-year old boy who said he wants to dance like me. I have never gotten that from anybody so, I feel elated and inspired.

How long have you been a dancer?I have been dancing since I was about 5 years old.

Malaki Osita, a.k.a. Maly Hot Boy, took the ‘Glo Dance with Peter’ stage with his daunting moves. Although, he didn’t win, he still plans to pursue his dream to further his education and make himself the

ultimate at what he does best. The 26-year old Imo State indigene is a fitness instructor and a choreographer for children in primary and secondary school.

He hopes, one day, to also open a dance academy for the next generation. Maly took home 2 million naira cash prize and a Honda Civic car. He also has a chance to dance in a Glo Ambassador’s music video.

Have you been in any professional dance competition in the past?

Yes, I took part in the ‘Maltina Dance Hall’ competition in 2012. I think that actually really helped me to know what to expect.

Who was your favourite judge? My favourite judge is Kaffy. And, it’s not just

because I was in her team (laughs).

What will you take away from this experience?I would say there are a whole lot of things. Dancing

has made me to understand that no matter where you’re from, you can bond with people from all walks of life.

Camping under one roof, one grows to love and understand people. Right now, it’s all about family and they have become family.

How long did you train when you got the call back for the competition?

I have been training for a long time. I actually stumbled on the programme on TV and since I was already training, I decided to audition.

What was the experience like for you in the competition?

Wow! It has been crazy! Sometimes, it got really tough but when I started finding myself during the process, it got better.

When I newly arrived, the whole thing was weird; like a different environment. Then, my first time on stage was scary but with time, I bonded with my colleagues and I started feeling at home and I could be myself again.

Have you partaken in any professional dance competition in the past?

Actually, yes - but not a major competition of this magnitude. I have been in music videos and taken part in concerts.

What will you do with the prize money?I will, first and foremost, take care of some things

at home, pay tithe and, then, further my education because I want to study outside the country; hopefully, in England. Then, I would enrol in a dance and music school. What was the highlight for you during the competition?

Wow! I would say getting the call back to participate in the show; it was the happiest day of my life. What do you have to say to Globacom for creating this one-of-a-kind platform?

Glo has made it possible for me to learn new things; the new dance styles, the people I bonded with and everything else. I really appreciate them for this. I really appreciate Peter and everyone who has worked to make this show a success.

Ghanaian-born dancer, Julius Fakta, is a final year student. He is studying Social Work at the University of Ghana. Although he was the last Ghanaian standing, he did his country proud,

coming third at the ‘Glo Dance with Peter’ competition. Julius went away with one million naira cash prize, a Kia Rio car and opportunity to dance in a Glo Ambassador’s music video.

Who was your favourite judge? My favourite judge was Kaffy. She was and will

continue to be my mentor.

What will you take away from this experience?I started out as a freestyler. I have been doing

freestyle dance for a number of years now and I had never really been given a platform like this to dance in presentation form. I have learnt to dance in a group and blend in and how to perform solo and make it more appealing to whoever is watching.

What will you do with the prize money?Back in Ghana, the exposure for dance isn’t very

much. I already had plans to help, in my little way, to promote dance in Ghana; so, when this opportunity came to me, it blew me away! I could finally achieve what I have been planning to do. I could fund it easily through this platform.

What was the highlight for you during the competition?

(Laughs) I remember my ‘King’ dance in episode 10. That was the moment, I think, I distinguished myself as a dancer on stage. I’m still learning to perform like that and still trying to cope with the nervousness and pressure of performing.

What do you have to say to Globacom for creating this one-of-a-kind platform?

I am very happy about this chance. Back in Ghana, there are other telecommunication networks but Glo has really done it for me. This platform has really bought and built my trust in the Globacom network. Now, I now you can really believe in them and I will make sure everyone at home knows it too.

SHRINK YOUR BELLY FAST THIS SEASON…

Flat belly arithmetic2 kinds of fiber -Sodium + potassium Rich foods – sugar alcohol + Oolong tea - Candy &Soft drinks + probiotic yogurt- Junk food + more water

= FLAT BELLY

A big belly can sap your body confidence but do not despair, help is on the way. A slow digestive system is one of the major reasons for big belly – especially among women over the age of 40. But with a few lifestyle changes, you can get your digestion moving and get a flatter, sexier, tummy in few weeks.Protocol no. 1: Start the day with a better breakfast:

Constipation distends your belly, and one way to get rid of it is by starting each morning with a breakfast cereal that

guarantees your body a daily dose of fiber. This gets the digestive system moving within a day or so and keeps it that way. Soluble and insoluble fiber work together to pull water into your colon and speed up elimination, and you look and feel lighter. Food fix – oat meal or bran fiber cereal.Protocol no 2: Subtract: sodium

Sodium makes you retain water, puffing up your belly. Stop salting your food at the table and check for sodium on the labels of packaged foods.Protocol no. 3: Add potassium rich foods:

Foods such as banana (1 medium) and sweet potato help your body get rid of excess water weight, minimizing your body. Food is a safe source of potassium not supplements.

Food fix: 1 medium baked or roasted sweet potato or 1

HEALTH101News

Best belly – flattening drinks for 2016• Water• Watermelon smoothie• Oolong tea• Pureh tea• Body perfect cocktail drink• Diluted apple cider vinegar ‘with the mother’

medium banana, 1 tomato or 1 medium orange.Protocol no. 4: Subtract sugar alcohol “Avoid diet food”

The stomach cannot digest these low-cal sweeteners (food in diet drinks and sugar free foods). Bacteria in the large intestine ferment them causing gas and even diarrhea.

Strategy: Check out food labels to help avoid them; e.g sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol and lacitol.Protocol no. 5: Sip 3 – 4, cups of Oolong tea daily:

As part of a low-calorie diet, high anti-oxidant oolong tea will help break down unwanted fat and quick digestion.

Added bonus: Helps with sicin glow.Protocol no. 6: Avoid bubble – inducing candy and soft drinks:

Once air from any source reaches your digestive system, you experience it as gas and a distended belly. Eating or drinking quickly, sipping through a straw, sucking on hard candy, and creamy gum can make you swallow air. Trade carbonated soft drinks for water or iced tea.Protocol no. 7: An imbalance bacteria in your gut can cause your digestive system to slow down and your belly puff up. Yogurts that contain live bacteria, otherwise known as probiotics, can help, by relieving constipation.Protocol no. 8: Guzzle more water throughout the day.

When there is enough water present in your system, the fiber cereal eaten is better able to pull liquid into your lower intestine and ease constipation. Avoid alcohol which has a dehydrating effect on the system.

Weight loss is not in a drug; it is a lifestyle change!

Everyone knows making decisions when it comes to gifts during the holiday season can be herculean task; so many options and so much to buy and do. Why not invest in a nice bottle of wine. Wine is one of the best gifts to give someone this season because it’s a sign of love and friendship. There are a multitude of wines around the world and most of them suit specific spheres of people. Here are a few wines to consider when giving to your special people.

Wines To Give As Gifts This Holiday Season

luxurywines spirits

- Franciacorta Satèn wine

It’s the Christmas season all over again and the smells of all sorts of holiday delicacies are in the air. Naturally a good chicken wing here and drum stick there is nice, but how about trying out stuffed chicken breasts, they’re lean, healthy and delicious. Here are a few mouth-watering recipes to try. Happy holidays!!!

RED PEPPER, MOZZARELLA, AND PEPPERONI-STUFFED CHICKEN

Ingredients• 4 boneless, skin-on chicken breasts.• 1 clove garlic, sliced in half.• kosher salt.• Black pepper.• 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil.• 1/2 to 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella.• 1/4 cup red pepper sliced into 1-in. long strips.• 8 to 12 slices pepperoni.Method:Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Meanwhile, place chicken breasts skin side up on clean work surface and rub all sides with cut garlic clove. Make light slices about 3 inches down the length of the breasts without cutting all the way through, the season inside in and out with salt and pepper. Pour 1 tbsp. of olive oil in skillet and when its hot but not smoking add chicken breasts skin side down, leaving as much space between them as possible. Cook until skin is golden brown and releases easily when moved, 4 to 5 minutes. Flip and repeat on remaining side. Turn off heat and let cool for few minutes. Once cool enough to handle, stuff cavities of each chicken breast with 2 to 3 tbsp. mozzarella. Cook chicken and cheese untill cheese is melted. Turn up heat to 450 degrees and cook 5 minutes more to help crisp pepperoni and chicken skin.

Christmas dinner with the family can be a lot to think about, first off mum will definitely be whipping up her tongue tingling chicken with gravy and veggie salad on the side. Dad will go into his collection of whiskies and dig out a bottle of his aged bourbons. The only other wine to compete with this is a nice bottle of Franciacorta Satèn, this wine made purely of chardonnay grapes tickle the tongue softly and is a great accompaniment for mum’s chicken.
