country house and transformed it into a magnificent modern
home, showcasing some of his best work
One would probably
expect a man who owns
a company renowned
for its beautifully crafted
kitchens and fine,
handmade wooden
furniture to live in a house that reflects
his passion for the craft. This could be
no closer to the truth than with John
Stephens, who lives with his wife and
three daughters in this refined and stylish
property, situated in the winding wooded
suburbs of south Sevenoaks.
Moving to Kent in the 1980s, John
started work as a spray finisher at Chart
Farm for a company called Rencraft.
Some 26 years on and John co-owns
the firm with the original founder Nick
Pile, which has now created outstanding
kitchens and furniture for hundreds of
homes throughout west Kent and beyond,
and has showrooms both in Sevenoaks
and Tunbridge Wells.
In 2005 there came a chance for John
to apply his expertise to his own family
home. He purchased the original 1920s
house which, although coming with
beautiful original features and a generous
plot, had also been somewhat tainted
by poorly conceived 1970s extensions.
After two-and-a-half years of careful
consideration, the timing was now
right for John to start remodelling and
restoring this beautiful property.
