May is Mental Health Awareness Month Mental illness is not caused by an emotional weakness or bad parenting, and most people living with the dis- ease are not dangerous and respond well to treatment. "Sensational stories in the media often exaggerate or don't portray a realistic image of mental illness," said Sam Shore. LMSW, Texas Depart- ment of Mental Health and Mental Retardation Director of Behavioral Health Services. "Until recently, these sources of information have not provided the full picture of the nature and impacts of mental illness," Shore said. "Movies, such as 'A Beautiful Mind' begin to provide a more complete picture." 'The public believes all people liv- ing with mental illnesses are danger- ous," Shore said. "But people with mental disabilities actually are more at risk for being taken advantage of by the public instead of being harm- ful to others." In a recent survey conducted by the National Mental Health Associa- tion, the following mistaken beliefs were reported on the causes of men- tal illness: 71% thought mental illness was caused by emotional weakness. •65% believed bad parenting caused mental illness. •35% felt mental illness was caused by sinful or immoral behavior. •43% thought people bring on their mental illness in some way. •"Some of the misconceptions are that family behavior, not biology, are at the root of a person's mental ill- ness," Shore said. "Mental illness is linked to brain chemistry, stress, genetics and abuse of legal and illegal drugs and is treat- able. People can recover from mental illness with the right support and re- habilitation," Shore said. Appropriate medications and therapies can help persons with men- tal illness live with their disease. Mental health advocates stress that mental illness is no different from other illnesses, such as cancer, diabe- tes and heart disease. Texana Mental Health and Men- tal Retardation Center (Texana MHMR Center) is your local mental health authority. Texana's role is to plan, facilitate, coordinate and pro- vide care to children and adults with mental illness. "Mental illness is all around us," Shore said. "Most community mem- bers don't have to look far to see someone close to them or related to them who has a mental illness. It is, and always has been, an integral part of our families and communities." "Acceptance of mental illness be- gins at home with family members and neighbors," Shore said. "A better understanding of the ill- ness and the effective treatments for it helps reduce stigma and makes seeking help a normal, acceptable thing to do. For more information on assis- tance for mental health issues, call Texana MHMR Center at 866-4 TEXANA (483-9262) or our Crisis Hot Line Number: 800-633-5686.
