The Project

The Artist

Illuminated By Fire Project TeamFollowing the Black Saturday Bushfires, local artist Sharon Collins

was inspired to create a sculpture symbolizing the unity and bond of the Flowerdale Community.

The end result being a large light box in the shape of a tree, an image adopted by the community as a sumbol of renewel. This

tree symbol has now been tattooed on over 100 local residents.Once illuminated, Adorned with resin hand casts taken from

hundreds of community residents, the tree celebrates the sense of unity that has emerged from this tragic event

Sharon Collins has always had a strong desire for the arts, painting with acrylics on canvas have been her dominant form concentrating

mainly on contempory to childrens art. Her interest in Lifecasting began in 2005 after casting her son’s hands and feet, but this soon

developed into adult body casting including full face and torso casts. The 2009 bushfires, whilst destroying all past works, inspired Sharon

even further to push new ideas and recreate her portfolio.

Her latest works have included a number of mixed mediums including working with acrylic and ash on canvas and her most recent, being the

casting of over 250 Flowerdale residents hands.

Molly’s Kitchen - for cooking our amazing dinner.

To my family for believing in me and allowing me to spend so much time away from them.

And to the entire Flowerdale community for being truly amazing - your attendance here tonight validates the community spirit.

How to find your hand on the tree

It would be a good idea to work out which area your hand is in before you enter the display. The hands are laid out in boxes, with the trunk of the tree being box A up to the top branches which are box G and H.On the following pages you will find diagrams of each box with lists of names belonging to hands on those boxes beneath. There will also be a large alphabetical list (by surname) which you can consult before you look at these lists and diagrams to find out which box your hand is on.But don’t forget to take in the overall effect of this wonderful artwork, which is as unique as Flowerdale itself
