A Message from the Pastor

Welcome!

Blessings and greeting to you all as we gather for SMART GALA, 2016.

What an exciting event. It is always a joy to come together on behalf of a good – dare I say – great cause? St. Michael Catholic School is a “gem in our midst” and we are so happy and proud to celebrate this gift.

Saint Michael, A Remarkable Tradition is truly that – over 100 years of primary school education built on faith, core values, excellence in education and rooted in a faith community has witnessed to the Love of God and the Mission of Jesus Christ since the first Mass was celebrated in 1845.

As with any worthwhile endeavor, it takes much planning, coordination, effort and hard work to not only maintain what we have inherited but even more so to help grow, improve and deepen the gift received.

That is why we are here tonight. We will be asked to be financially generous on behalf of our children who are blessed to be part of St. Michael Catholic School. We will be asked to sacrifice on behalf of a great good than ourselves and even our immediate family. We will be asked to envision a future full of hope, a vision that one day will be open to every Catholic parish family who desires to send their child to St. Michael School.

We need to build on the foundation of over a quarter century of SMART Auctions. Our endowment continues to grow to provide for tuition assistance. Capital projects to the school assist us to meet ever changing needs inside the classroom and out. What we have accomplished is memorable. What we need to accomplish lies ahead. Let us not shrink from the task. Rather, let us generously give and move into the future with renewed enthusiasm, passion and vision – to form intentional missionary disciples of Jesus Christ.

With sincere thanks to each and every one of you,

Fr. James E. LeePastor

Dear Friends and Families of St. Michael Parish School,

Welcome to the 2016 St. Michael Parish School S.M.A.R.T. Gala! Thank you for the gift of your presence this evening as we celebrate our proud tradition of Catholic education. Since 1881, our school has served families in Olympia and Thurston County by providing excellent, Catholic faith-based education to their children. Our school’s mission is built upon a shared commitment to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and aesthetic growth for all of our students. Our entire faculty and staff are committed to partnering with our families to ensure that we are continually living this mission. As we look ahead, your dedicated stewardship through the sharing of your time, talent, and treasure ensures a bright future for our school.

Over the past 27 years, your support of the S.M.A.R.T. auction has enabled the continual growth of St. Michael Parish School. Each year, half of our auction proceeds fund our Capital Improvements Fund and the other half builds our Endowment Fund. Through your kind generosity, our auction has funded such exciting projects as our playground, smart boards, public address system, security doors, covered play area, and the new drainage system for our playfield. Additionally, generations of students have been able to attend our school through tuition assistance generated by the auction. I want you to know that your participation tonight significantly impacts the lives of our students, directly enhancing their school experiences and allowing us to provide the best Catholic education possible. Whether you are new to the auction or have been with us for many years, please know that your support is deeply honored and recognized.

I would like to thank our S.M.A.R.T. auction chair, Aurea Estrella-Geraghty. Her dedication and sense of vision have led us to this exciting evening of stewardship and community building. I am grateful for the support of our parents, our teachers, our S.M.A.R.T. committee, our PTSA room reps, and all of our donors. Please join me in warmly thanking them for their service to the school. I am also appreciative of Fr. Jim’s wise counsel and spiritual leadership in support of the auction. Lastly, please join me in thanking all of our school and parish families. The success of our S.M.A.R.T. auction only happens through our combined efforts as one parish family. Thank you for your support and let’s “celebrate the night in black and white”!

Blessings,

Connor GeraghtyPrincipalSt. Michael Parish School

A Message from the Event Chair

“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”-Jane Goodall

This quote can be applied to so many things in life but when I hear these words, I think of how this message rings so true with our S.M.A.R.T. Auction stewardship. When I came to St. Michael Parish School three years ago I had an instant calling to be part of the S.M.A.R.T Auction. I thought, “Hey, I like parties so why not get involved in the biggest party the school has?” Well, I soon realized that the S.M.A.R.T Auction is so much more than a “party” and although my goal as auction chair is to give you a celebration you won’t soon forget, there is a much deeper meaning to this evening.

Tonight we celebrate the history of the school — it’s long-standing tradition of excellence in Catholic education. Tonight we celebrate the future — supporting the school not only for our children but for generations to come. Tonight we get to decide what kind of difference we want to make — stewards that can help make tonight a success.

Thank you to everyone from our generous sponsors to all the people behind the scenes that have made the conscious decision to continue this remarkable tradition. The S.M.A.R.T. Auction truly is a stewardship of time, talent and treasure and I am so thankful to be part of it!

Cheers!

In August of 1881, Sister Benedict Joseph Superior, Sister Mary Gabriel, and Sister Providence of the Sacred Heart, transformed a small building in Olympia into a makeshift Catholic school and convent. The building, called Providence St. Amable, opened its doors on September 18, with 35 girls enrolled. Within a few years the sisters had raised enough money to purchase land on which to build a permanent school. Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart planned and supervised construction of the new Providence St. Amable Academy, a two-story building to be located in downtown Olympia on what is now Capitol Way. The Academy opened on February 13, 1884. There were few amenities and no luxuries, but the building had larger classrooms and, for the first time, space for a chapel. In 1889, a fourth sister joined the faculty and boys were admitted for the first time. The high school program that continued to admit only girls, provided full academic preparation for careers in teaching and business. The sisters, who wanted the poor to be able to attend their school, kept tuition as low as possible – $1 per month for primary grades and $2 per month for high school. In 1906, when Providence St. Amable Academy celebrated its 25th anniversary, the school had 103 pupils, 25 boarders, and a faculty of 7 sisters. Over time, the school became known simply as Providence Academy. During the 1912-13 school year, the sisters were joined by the school’s first lay teachers. In 1914 the Academy built a new annex containing an auditorium, library, science laboratory and a separate dormitory for the sisters. In 1918 another classroom was built using wood from the old Catholic church. Never a prosperous establishment, the school fell into debt until 1926 when St. Michael Parish purchased it for $11,000. Parish administration

discontinued the high school and student boarding, and the Providence Academy officially became St. Michael School. The building, which had deteriorated during the Depression, was damaged by a fire in 1939. Planning for a new school began in January of 1949 with construction costs estimated at $300,000. Four months later, an earthquake brought down the facades of many downtown buildings. While the school survived the quake, inspections later revealed considerable structural damage and the 2nd and 3rd floors were condemned. Construction of the new

school was delayed as parishioners worked to make needed repairs. In March of 1950, Father Michael O’Dwyer, representing Archbishop Connolly, broke ground for the new St. Michael School and Convent at our current location on 10th Street. Classes in the original building on Capitol Way ended in June of 1951. That summer, supplies were transferred, desks

were refinished and the sisters moved into their new convent. The new St. Michael School opened just in time to accommodate the children of the post-war “baby boom” with 343 students enrolled for Fall. The 1960s brought significant changes to the school. With fewer sisters available to join the faculty, the first lay principal was hired in 1968. Sisters continued teaching at the school until the early 1970s. St. Michael School has built a legacy of Catholic education that is rich in tradition and dedicated to Catholic principles. We are grateful to all who have supported our school since its humble beginnings. Many thanks to our dedicated staff, parents, friends and alumni for helping us move confidently into the future.

Fund-a-need

Dear Friends of St. Michael,

I am pleased to announce our Fund-a-Need for this year’s Spring Gala! Each year, our community focuses on one special project for each auction in order to improve our facilities, thus enhancing the school experience for our current and future students.

Our Fund-a-Need for the Spring Gala will focus on an area of our school that is used by all students: our gym! It has been 20 years since our gym has undergone a major renovation. Over the years, our beloved gym has experienced the wear and tear caused by regular use from P.E. classes, sports teams, all-school assemblies, and parish events. There are a variety of necessary updates and enhancements that our gym currently needs. These projects are listed in the following levels below:

Level 4-New, motorized gym bleachers! ($40,000 level)

Level 3-New volleyball system with nets, posts, and pads plus gym equipment ($15,000 level)

Level 2-New pads for underneath the basketball hoops and a Spartan logo at center court ($8,000 level)

Level 1-New gym scoreboard ($6,000 level)

Through the collective generosity of our community, we are hoping to move from the first stewardship level to the next until we achieve each of these gym improvements. By reaching our goal of $40,000, 100% of our gym improvement projects can be realized.

We have already reached our level 1 goal due to the kind stewardship of Mike and Elaine Bair (Mrs. Getchman’s sister and brother in-law), allowing us to purchase a new gym scoreboard. Let’s see if we can bridge the gap to reach level 4 and provide future generations of children with a gym that truly gives them a sense of school pride!

With deep gratitude,

Connor GeraghtyPrincipal

Auction Preview• Before the live auction, tour the room and auction stage to get an up-close

look at the excellent quality of the items displayed. Consult your auction catalog and note details such as restrictions, limitations and sizes at that time.

Live Auction Bidding• To bid, raise your bid card high, number facing the auctioneer.

• A bid acknowledged by the auctioneer, assistant auctioneer, or volunteer bid spotter is a legal contract to purchase the item.

• The auctioneer and organization reserve the right to reject any bid which is a minimal fractional increase over the prior bid.

• “Dream Value” is the minimum we hope will be paid for the item.“Fair Market Value” is the estimated retail value (provided by the donor). Some items have a “Reserve Price” below which the item may not be sold.

• Some auction items may involve a payout to the item vendor. The School keeps any funds bid above the payout amount. Item descriptions usually note any payout amounts so you will know how much of the winning bid is retained by St. Michael School.

• Items may be added to, or withdrawn from, the auction by the auctioneer or organization without prior notice.

Combined (Group) BidsTwo or more people may make a group bid under these conditions:

IRS regulations stipulate that auction items be awarded to one purchaser only. Should two or more people wish to split the cost of an auction item, one bidder from the group must be designated as “purchaser” of the item.

The group “purchaser” must pay for the item in a single payment. The Bank cannot accept partial payments from group members.

The group “purchaser” can collect partial payment from others in the group and pay for the item in full at the Bank; OR pay for the item in full, then collect (partial) reimbursement from each member of the group. The group purchaser then gives each bidder a copy of the receipt.

Silent Auction Bidding• Bid forms are displayed near each silent auction item. The form is a legal

contract for the highest bidder to purchase the item.

• To bid on an item, write your bid number on the form opposite the amount you want to bid. Press hard (you are making 2 copies!)

• You may skip bid increments to a higher amount. The next bidder must bid at least one increment higher than yours to successfully outbid you.

• To ensure a win, write your bid number beside the “Guaranteed Purchase” price. Bidding on the item ends and you are the winning bid.

• The Silent Auction is divided into sections – each with its own closing time that will be posted and/or announced. You may bid on items until their section closes. Event staff will bring winning bidders a copy of their auction item’s bid sheet during the live auction.

Paying for Your Auction Items• Auction purchases are final. No refunds/exchanges unless noted.

• Payment is due, in full, at the close of the auction.

• The Bank opens midway though the auction to accept payment from winning bidders. Multiple items may be purchased in a single transaction.

• Payment may be made by cash, check (payable to St. Michael School) or credit using your Visa, Mastercard or American Express.

• Bidders registered for ExpressPay™ do not need to pay for items at the Bank. Paid receipts (and any accompanying gift certificates) will be delivered to you during the course of the auction.

Claiming Your Auction Items• Winning bidders are responsible for locating/removing their purchases

from the premises. Claim any gift certificates not displayed at the Bank.

• Items left at the auction will be moved to the St. Michael School office and may be picked up on Monday of next week.

“Oversized Item” Delivery• This year we are offering delivery of qualifying oversized items identified

by the delivery tag hanging on the item. SMART volunteers will deliver oversized items from 1-4pm on Sunday, Oct. 5. Please arrange to have someone home to greet the truck and receive your special purchase.

• Non-deliverable items left behind will be taken to the School office and may be picked up, during school hours on Monday of next week.

Redeeming Gift Certificates• Goods and services must be claimed and all certificates redeemed within

one year of the auction date unless otherwise noted.

• Reservations for travel packages and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted.

• Travel ticket are for coach class unless otherwise noted.

• No refunds on cancelled reservations for travel or accommodations.

• Travel pricing is subject to change, so donors agree to provide travel,as described, regardless of price increase/decrease. No refunds will be made for changes in value.
