Located in Toronto, the Textile Museum of Canada (TMC) is a special arts institution dedicated to promoting the importance of textile arts and crafts throughout the world. This project involves the creation of a new visual identity for the Textile Museum of Canada that supports its value of “connecting cloth, culture and art”, and highlights its personality as a unique cross between museum and art gallery. The goal of this new look for the Textile Museum of Canada is to reach a wider audience and reposition the public perception of the museum as one that is relevant to contemporary issues without losing its historical foundation. The redesign references the aesthetic of vintage gar- ment tags with its typographic treatment, but also utilizes an eclectic mix of contemporary sans serif typefaces to suggest the museum’s position in between tradition and modern. Each element of the brand reflects an important characteristic and value of the institution. The wordmark references the museum’s union of tradition and modern. The symbol is created from the initials of the museum woven together, which reflects TMC’s primary dedication to textile as well as their devotion to community and sustainability. The use of pattern and the deep purple colour have deep symbolic and cultural connections to royalty, cloth, and history. The specified paper stock for the brand has a linen finish, which mimics the feeling of cloth in multiple print applications. The overall combination of these elements present a strong cohesive identity for an institution dedicated to textile arts and crafts. The redesign includes an identity manual with style guidelines, samples of printed collateral, and examples for other possible applications. Located in Toronto, the Textile Museum of Canada (TMC) is a special arts institution dedicated

to promoting the importance of textile arts and crafts throughout the world. This project

involves the creation of a new visual identity for the Textile Museum of Canada that supports

its value of “connecting cloth, culture and art”, and highlights its personality as a unique cross

between museum and art gallery.

The goal of this new look for the Textile Museum of Canada is to reach a wider audience and

reposition the public perception of the museum as one that is relevant to contemporary issues

without losing its historical foundation. The redesign references the aesthetic of vintage gar-

ment tags with its typographic treatment, but also utilizes an eclectic mix of contemporary sans

serif typefaces to suggest the museum’s position in between tradition and modern.

Each element of the brand reflects an important characteristic and value of the institution. The

wordmark references the museum’s union of tradition and modern. The symbol is created from

the initials of the museum woven together, which reflects TMC’s primary dedication to textile as

well as their devotion to community and sustainability. The use of pattern and the deep purple

colour have deep symbolic and cultural connections to royalty, cloth, and history. The specified

paper stock for the brand has a linen finish, which mimics the feeling of cloth in multiple print

applications. The overall combination of these elements present a strong cohesive identity for

an institution dedicated to textile arts and crafts.

The redesign includes an identity manual with style guidelines, samples of printed collateral,

and examples for other possible applications.
