What is “Internship”?The globally accepted definition of an internship is:

“A pre-qualification or pre-professional work experience that provides students with opportunities to gain experience in a particular degree field.”

What are the Benefits?hands-on training »

Build their knowledge within their field of study »

Learn in an environment supervised by qualified professionals, many of »whom have extensive experience in working with international interns through AIFS.

Further their communication and business English skills; »

Improve their career prospects, and a more defined knowledge of the direction »in which they wish to go professionally.

Internationalized their CV »

Gained invaluable industry related contacts »

Receive a valuable reference and if required academic credit towards their »current studies

An AIFS internship is designed for university students and recent graduates wishing to consolidate their studies by structured training in the workplace, better understand their industry, distinguish their CV with a professional work place experience in a native English speaking country and gain confidence in the field of their expertise.

For each person the benefits of completing an Internship in Australia are unique. However all Interns find that the experience is an invaluable kick start to their career and an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience practical training in the field of their study.

Each participant will attend a separate orientation to their internship orientation which covers specific information for finding paid work and AIFS” assistance.

The standard program includes:

2 job offers »

Personal consultations with Job staff »

Résumé checking service »

Accommodation information and help »

Weekly Job Workshop »

Mail keeping and mail forwarding services »

Buses, tours and air travel at competitive rates »

Free Email and Internet access around Australia »

Online ‘members only’ web portal »

Work & Travel Australia is only open to those countries with a reciprocal working holiday agreement with Australia. It can be purchased separately as a stand alone program or as an add-on to PIA.

Accommodation Finding accommodation can be time-consuming and expensive after the intern arrives in Australia. Many interns choose to spend their first few weeks with a home stay family until they have settled into their new company and AIFS recommend this option to our Agents.

For Interns seeking to stay with an Australian family, AIFS can arrange a home stay in most capital cities of Australia.

Grievance handling It is critical that all interns understand the level of responsibility they will hold and the tasks that will make up their internship. In Australia interns are considered to be starting in their careers so tasks and responsibilities are set according to these guidelines.

Intern’s responsibilities within the host company will depend on a variety of factors such as; their level of experience, educational background, level of English and the industry.

A high school graduate or first year University student with only limited knowledge in their field of studies can expect to do more general tasks than graduates. These interns would be more dependent on supervision and have limited responsibility. Naturally in this situation the Intern will be learning new skills which they have previously not been exposed to and of course advancing their Business English.

An Intern with specialized level of knowledge can expect to be involved in projects in which they will be applying their technical skills or previous knowledge directly. After the initial introduction to the company, under close supervision and a structured training plan these Interns are normally given a more involved training where they may apply their knowledge and experience. The level of responsibility and involvement in the company’s business operations depends on the intern’s, field of study abilities and naturally the enthusiasm they display to the host company during their internship.

Longer internships ensure a more involved training with increased training outcomes. Shorter internships give general, first exposure to the industry.

Occasionally issues arise during the program. If the intern or host company has an issue which cannot be resolved with each other AIFS will mediate. This mediation is documented and copies of any issues can be forwarded to the agent if requested.

AIFS terms and conditions clearly outline what is expected of the intern for the duration of their placement. Failure to adhere to these terms and conditions may result in the cancellation of the internship in which case AIFS will be unable to offer further services to the Intern or provide a reference from the Host Company.

What is a Homestay?A Homestay is a single furnished room with an Australian family no more than 40 minutes from the location of their internship. Homestay include breakfast and dinner. For more information about Homestay options please contact AIFS.

The Home stay application form should be submitted to AIFS at the time that the Applicant applies for the program.

The Agent is responsible for letting AIFS know about the intern’s allergies, smoking habits and special needs and preferences.

Details about the costs of a Homestay are in the Documents Section of this handbook together with the Homestay Application Form which contains the Home stay code of conduct, home stay cancellation policy and home stay terms & conditions.

In addition to home stay, shared accommodation is a popular option among young people in Australia and there are a number of online resources to look for a suitable option such as www.furnishedproperty.com.au. For more information please refer to our website.

AIFS should be another stop when beginning the search for accommodation. Besides AIFS’ accommodation notice boards, AIFS staff can also provide Interns with advice on choosing the right place to live.

NOTE: If arriving in Australia between mid-December to mid-January, interns will find accommodation costs are much higher due to the summer holidays. It will also be very difficult to find accommodation in most capital cities unless bookings are made well in advance.

TippingTipping is not customary in Australia although service charges are added to accounts by some hotels and restaurants on weekends and public holidays. Taxi drivers do not expect to be tipped although often Australians will round up the cost to the dollar. In more expensive restaurants it is usual to tip waiters up to 10% of the bill for “special service”. At any time, tipping is your choice and you should consider the service you receive when working out if and how much to give.

will need an adaptor. In some cases you will need a voltage converter as well as an adaptor. Adaptors can be purchased from most travel shops or upon arrival at AIFS for around A$13.00.

Business HoursOffice hours in Australia are generally 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Shopping hours vary from state to state and from store to store. In Sydney, several supermarkets have extended shopping hours; however general shopping hours are from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Sunday. Most cities have one late trading night a week, usually Thursday or Friday.

Cost of LivingDepending on where the intern comes from in the world, s/he will probably find Australia’s cost of living to be relatively affordable or even cheaper than home. However it is important to consider before you leave home how much you will need to support your travels and living expenses. Some interns live in Australia on A$45 a day, although A$60 - A$75 would be a more realistic figure and would mean that you could be a lot more flexible in what you do. Beds in dorm type accommodations range from A$20 to A$38 and prices for a double room range from A$65 to A$95.

As in all larger cities the cost of living is higher, so if you plan to spend most of your time in Australia cities your living costs will be higher.

When cashing a travellers cheque, it is important to check the fees and commissions, because they vary widely from bank to bank and institution to institution. AIFS has arranged an exclusive deal with Travelex so that interns are not charged a commission fee when cashing travellers cheques and foreign currencies. For more details please encourage the intern to speak with one of the friendly staff at AIFS.

Credit CardsThe most common cards are MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Diners Club. Interns should be aware that credit cards may have restricted use in small stores and some places may not accept them as a method of payment for small amounts.

As an intern/temporary resident interns will be unable to apply for an Australian credit card.

Transferring money from overseasThe easiest way to transfer money from overseas is to do an International Funds Transfer from an Overseas Account to an Australian Account. This is a very simple and safe process. It is important to check with the overseas bank before leaving, on what their process is for international transfer. Please note that international transfers can take between 5-10 working days.

The other option available is to send money through an agency like Western Union. It takes about 30 minutes for the money to be transferred and Western Union agents are found all around the world and in many part of Australia. Western Union fees apply and some stores have limited opening hours. For details visit www.westernunion.com.

Public telephonesTelstra is Australia’s national provider for public phones. A local call from a public phone booth will cost 50 cents for any length of time. All public phones take coins, most take phone cards, and some of the newer boxes take credit cards. Telephone cards can be purchased at AIFS.

BankingIf the intern is receiving payment, an Australian bank account will be necessary so that the host company can pay intern’s salary directly into his/her account. There are many banks in Australia and their fees and services vary greatly.

If an intern decides to open a bank account after arrival, the bank will need his/her passport and another form of identification such as a credit card or overseas driver’s license. The Intern will have to supply a permanent address when opening an account, so AIFS suggests the use of AIFS address for this purpose.

The address is:

Your Name

C/- AIFS

PO Box Q577, QVB PO

Sydney NSW 1230

Automatic Teller Machines (ATM’s)ATMs are found in all cities and can be accessed with a bank card or with a credit card or bankcard that bear the “Cirrus” or “Maestro logo. Most banks have a limit of $1000 per day however it is best to check with the bank if planning to withdraw a large amount of money. It is a good idea to obtain overseas banks phone number or their Australian contact number. Interns may need to contact them if they have any problems accessing their overseas bank account.

EFTPOSMany shops, service stations supermarkets and department stores are linked to the EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale) system. The EFTPOS system is a debit system, which enables people to pay directly for goods with a bankcard.

Travellers ChequesAmerican Express, Travelex and Visa are widely recognised in Australia and are a useful way to carry money if the intern does not intend to open a bank account.

23 January, 2009 Johann Volkmann C/- AIFS Australia 91 York Street Sydney NSW 2000

Application for an Internship Dear Sir or Madam, My name is Johann Volkmann and I would like to apply for an internship within your organization. As you will see from my resume attached, I am currently studying a degree in Business, majoring in International Marketing at the Bergerstein University in Berlin. In order to complete this degree I am required to complete an internship in a foreign country, in a language other that German. As I have studied English for the past 7 years, and have always had an interest in Australia, I have decided to undertake my internship in Australia. As you will also see from my resume, I have undertaken 2 other internships in the last 3 years, with BMW Bergerstein and Deichmann Dortmund. Both of these internships were working within a variety of departments within the respective companies including administration, marketing, promotion and controlling. I am flexible with the date I can start an internship and would ideally like to commence an internship sometime in August this year. As I am studying International Marketing I would be very happy to work within your marketing department or have the opportunity to work within an associated area. I would like to thank you for your time and look forward to hearing from you in the near future. Kind regards, (sign here) Johann Volkmann

416 Visa FAQ

AIFS AUSTRALIA Second floor, 91 York Street, Sydney NSW 2000 T +61 2 8235 7000 [email protected]

F +61 2 8235 7002 www.aifsaustralia.com

416 Visa FAQ’s

a) How long does it take from the time of application to get the visa? The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) tries to process all applications within 4-8 weeks of the date of application. Between July-November peak season, expect a 6-8 weeks waiting period. This is however an approximation and visa processing usually takes longer if additional information, i.e. health check/police record etc. are required. b) Can I get paid/work on the 416 visa? You will be granted with a 416 special visa regarding information about your host company provided to DIAC. It is illegal to seek paid employment with any other organization during your internship. c) Can I study on the 416 visa? You can study without exceeding 20% of the total duration of the program. d) What if I don’t get my visa in time? DIAC advices that you don’t book a flight until your visa has been approved. AIFS can usually alter the start date of your Internship should this be necessary. e) Can I go onto a 416 visa from a student visa? Since May 2007 it is possible to change from a Student Visa to a 416 visa if you meet the eligibility criteria. f) What if my visa application is refused? It is very rare for an application to be refused as long as the health and character requirements can be met and the Internship is bona fide. The visa fee (AU$190) is non refundable in all cases. It is not possible to guarantee that your visa application will be successful. g) Can I bring dependants (children/spouse/relatives whom are dependant on you) out to Australia on the 416 visa It is possible, although they will also have to undergo health/character checks. There are no work limitations on dependants, but in order to be included on your application they must prove that they will financially be dependent on you during their stay in Australia. h) What is the maximum time frame of 416 special visa? You can be granted with a 416 special visa for up to six months. Conditions apply, please refer to ‘’eligibility criteria’’. e) Is 416 special visa extendible if I wanted to stay longer in Australia? Your 416 special visa will only be granted for the duration of your internship. If later on you wish to stay longer in Australia, you can chose to apply for another visa suitable to your situation however AIFS is not authorized to give advice on other visas.
