ERO REPORT

ITEMS ROOM 1, 2 AND ENVIRO GROUP

We have just received our final ERO report which makes great reading. Very soon it will be

published on the Education Review Office website and we have put it onto our school

website. Here is just a short exert from the report.

How effectively do the school’s curriculum and other organisational processes and practices

develop and enact the school’s vision, values, goals and priorities for equity and excellence?

The school promotes a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for children and their whānau.

The principal and trustees work in partnership with whānau Māori and staff to enhance Māori student

success, and to promote bicultural and bilingual learning opportunities for all children. Children take

advantage of the various co-curricular opportunities available in sports, culture and the Arts, and in

leadership. The school's values-focused curriculum helps children to be confident, self-managing

learners. The school's vision is strongly evident in the school's approach to curriculum design.

Children and staff are encouraged to be innovative and take on challenges in their learning. In line

with the school's whakatauki, teachers and school leaders work collaboratively to plan learning

programmes that promote children's confidence, and that focus on their strengths, talents, interests

and needs. The curriculum provides children with very good opportunities to learn about and within

their local area, and to experience innovation and real world problem solving. They especially enjoy

increasingly rich learning in science. Teachers and teacher aides adapt learning programmes to the

interests, strengths and needs of individual children. Teachers' enthusiasm and energy engages and

motivates children. They respond well to the high expectations teachers and staff have for their

learning and behaviour. Older children especially have a very good understanding of their own

learning and achievement, setting and evaluating their learning goals and next steps.

ILLS AND CHILLS

Please – I can’t stress enough just how important it is that we have up to date contact details

for you at all times as it is very scary and frustrating for us if we cannot contact you if there is

an emergency involving your child. We have responsibility for your precious children for a

large part of every day and we take this very seriously. Have your contact details changed?

Have you told us?

EVACUATION PRACTICE

Although this has been in the last newsletter, I apologise if any of you missed this. The date

for the Talent Quest is the last Thursday of term – the 7th of July at Bream Bay College

Auditorium. We were unable to have the original date due to exams being held at the college.

I hope this has not inconvenienced any of you and look forward to seeing you there.

Next Tuesday we are planning to have an off-site evacuation practice as part of our tsunami

emergency plan. The idea of this practice is just to test the plan and to let the children know

what we would do in the very unlikely event of a tsunami. Once we have done this, we will

adjust our plan to ensure it is correct. We will inform you about the plan once it is finalised. It

would be great if all children wore shoes to school on that day as we will be walking on

gravel.

It is that time of the year when both children and staff and coming down with all sorts of

illnesses. At the moment we have sore throats and tummy bugs going around. We have also

has chicken pox but we are hoping this is coming to an end. Please keep your children at

home if they are unwell in the morning as we usually have to end up ringing you to come and

pick them up sooner rather than later.

Room 1 are after different coloured clean milk bottle tops and Room 2 are looking for jars of all

shapes and sizes for their trash to treasure unit. Jars need to be clean, with labels removed

and must have lids that fit, baby food jars, jam jars. The Enviro group are looking for chutney

jars for the Enviro table at Gala day. Please take them to the class teacher or into the office.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Congratulations to James McCullough, Steve York, Bruce Martin, Missy Armstrong and Henry

Coll who are now the Parent Trustees for Ruakaka School.

Thank you to those Board members who have worked so hard for our children over the past 3

years - Aaron Therkleson, Ari Carrington and Gillian Roberts. There were also two nominees

who many of you voted for, who unfortunately could not be Board members as they have

worked at the school for a length of time.

Our Teacher Trustee is Ryan Green.

LIFE EDUCATION

BUILDING UPDATE

DESCRIBING A MOMENT IN TIME WRITING

My Grandad

I heard my family crying and the surf life-saving jeep roaring.

I heard the surf life-saving people say, “Sorry he’s dead.”

I saw a cold white face on the sand.

I felt my heart slowing down and I felt terrified.

I felt the sand scratching my hands and

knees.

I wondered if I would be lost without him.

I wondered if my worst nightmare would

come true.

by Hayley Bryers - Room 3 Aged 8 years

As you are all aware, Sarah Sade is leaving us after over 16 years at Ruakaka School. We will farewell her officially on the night of our Talent Quest. If you would like to contribute some money towards a gift for her, please just drop this off at the office. If you know of any past families who may like to do this, please let them know.

You will also have noticed that we have started a new building project. The toilets behind

Rooms 3 & 4 are being revamped and will become a “superloo” for the whole school to use,

plus there will be a Special Needs bathroom on one end. You can be assured that we have

enough toilets available for all children - rooms 4 & 8 children will be using four porta-loos and

the rest of the children will use the other existing toilets between rooms 5 & 6 and those

behind block 1. It will take at least 8 weeks to complete the work.

The builders are starting on the ramp outside the multipurpose room. This shouldn’t take to

long to complete but while renovations are underway access to the multipurpose room will be

through the library. If you are picking up your children from After School Care please go

through the library.

FAREWELL MISS SADE

If you have been into the school this week you will have noticed lots of exciting things

happening! You will be greeted at the front gate by the huge “Life Education Trust” trailer. All

classes will visit the trailer this week.
