any reason whatsoever and do not bind themselves to accept the lowest Quotation. v. Payment shall be made only against the actual quantity executed by the Contractor.

iv. Actual executed quantity of the items may vary to any limit from the quantity mentioned in the priced BOQ. No extra claims on quoted rate will be allowed.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

SECTION - A : SPECIFICATION FOR CEMENT CONCRETE :

1. GENERAL :

The Contractor shall provide everything necessary including all labour, materials, equipment and incidentals required for proper execution and completion of all concrete work as called for.

2. MATERIALS : All Construction materials shall be supplied by the Employer at site well before the

execution. Contractor to give indent well in advance of consumption.

2.1 CEMENT :

The cement used shall be either of the following types : a) Ordinary portland cement conforming to I.S. : 269. b) Portland pozzolana cement conforming to I.S. : 1489. c) Blast furnace slag cement conforming to I.S. : 455.

2.2 AGREEGATES :

Basalt Aggregates, coarse and fine, shall be obtained from a source approved by the Engineer-in-Charge. They shall be hard and shall not contain materials that are likely to decompose or change in volume when exposed to the weather or which are likely to effect the reinforcement. All aggregates shall be clean and free from chemical and organic impurities. The particles shall be free from coatings of dust and clay. When required by the Engineer-in-Charge, the aggregates shall be tested for the following tests in accordance with I.S. : 2386.

1. Sieve analysis. 2. Determination of clay, fine silt and fine dust.

3. Strength of test cubes or cylinders.

4. Organic impurities. 5. Soundness. 6. Abrasion value. The costs of all these tests shall be borne by the Contractor. The representatives of the Engineer-in-Charge if they so desire, may be

present at all preliminary and work tests.

A)

COARSE AGGREGATES :

Basalt Coarse aggregates shall normally consist of crushed stone or approved natural gravel. It shall be chemically inert, hard, strong, durable or of limited porosity free from adherent coatings, glassy or powdery surfaces. It shall be free from reactive substances which participate in alkali aggregate reaction. It shall have specific gravity of not less than 2.56

In case of crushed stone, substantially all faces shall have resulted from crushing operations. This shall be free from stone dust except as permitted within the limits of suitable grading. Moreover it shall not contain pieces of disintegrated stones, soft, flaky and elongated particles, salt, alkali, vegetable matter and other deleterious material in such quantities as to reduce the

strength or durability of the concrete or attack the steel reinforcement. In case the aggregate screened, washed and treated as directed at his own cost. Unless otherwise specified, the size of coarse aggregate shall conform to Clause - 4.2 of I.S. : 456. The maximum size of coarse aggregate shall be such that the concrete cable placed without difficulty so as to surround all reinforcement thoroughly and fill the corners of form work.

B) FINE AGGREGATES :

Fine aggregates shall be clean pit sand or other approved sand. It shall be free from other injurious amounts of soft and flaky particles and free from vegetable or organic or clayey matter, loam, mica, salts and other deleterious substances. Sand shall be screened and washed, if the extraneous material exceeds 5% by volume or is of a damaging nature.

2.3 WATER :

Water used for both mixing and curing concrete shall be fresh, clean and free from oil, salts, acids, alkali or other chemicals and deleterious matter. It shall be from the source approved by the Engineer-in-Charge and shall be in accordance with Clause - 4.3 of I.S. : 456. Before starting any concrete work and whenever the source of water changes, the mixing water proposed to be used on the job, shall be tested for its chemical and other impurities to ascertain its suitability for use in concrete for approval of the Engineer-in-Charge. Costs of all such tests shall be borne by the Contractor.

3. STORAGE :

Cement shall be stored in accordance with Clause - 6.1 of I.S. : 269 or as approved by the Engineer-in-Charge. Any cement which has become wet shows any sign of cracking, or deterioration, or contamination of any kind shall not be used and shall be immediately removed from the site. Coarse and fine aggregate shall be stored in separate open bins according to sizes. The bins shall have brick walls of adequate thickness and floor paved with flat backs as described in I.S. : 4082 or as approved by the Engineer-in-Charge.

4. GRADING OF AGGREGATE :

All aggregates shall be suitably graded from the maximum certified guage to the minimum in conformity with the requirements laid down in I.S. : 383. The Contractors shall submit a sieve analysis of the aggregates to be used on the works and shall maintain a regular record of sieve analysis during the currency of the work. The grading of the aggregates shall be determined from these sieve analysis so as to produce concrete of maximum density. All expenses of sieve analysis shall be borne by the Contractor.

5. BATCHING :

One category of cement concrete are specified under this contract. 5.1 ORDINARY CONCRETE :

In case of ordinary cement concrete, aggregates and cements shall be measured by volume. Mixing water shall be measured in graduated litre cans.

6. MIX PROPORTIONS :

6.1 ORDINARY CONCRETE : All cement concrete not specifically designated as controlled concrete shall

be treated as ordinary concrete of nominal mix as specified. Where nominal concrete mixes are described as 1:1:2, 1:3:6, etc. the figures

denote the relative proportions of cement, dry sand and graded stone aggregate respectively.

For example, concrete of nominal mix 1:1:2 shall mean a mix of 1 part cement, 1 parts of washed dry coarse sand and 2 parts crushed graded stone aggregate, the proportion being volumetric, measured in properly constructed guage boxes. If bulking in accordance with I.S.: 2386 (Part- III).

The size of aggregates shall be 32 mm and down graded suitably to achieve a dense concrete only for P.C.C 1:3:6 and down graded suitably & that for all R.C.C works will be 20 mm down.

7. WATER CEMENT RATIO :

The water cement ratio shall be carefully controlled throughout the work. This calls for a regular check on the equipment used for measuring water. Only graduated liter cans shall be used for this purpose.

In case of ordinary cement concrete the maximum value of water cement ration shall be 0.50 and in the case of controlled concrete the water cement ratio as determined by the mix design shall be strictly adhered to. Concrete shall be frequently tested for slump-cone test. While determining the amount of mixing water, moisture contents of the aggregates shall be taken into account. Any additional quantity of water, if used to improve the workability shall be accompanied by an equal quantity of cement without any extra cost. However such additional use of water shall be subject to approval of the Engineer-in-Charge.

The Contractor shall provide the mixer operator, two standard measures one of 5 liters and other of 1 liter capacity for measuring the water to be added to the mix.

8 MIXING :

All concrete, whether plain or reinforced, ordinary or controlled, shall be mixed in a standard type concrete mixer having a minimum drum speed of 60 peripheral metres/minute. Materials for concrete shall be deposited into the drum while it is in rotation. After all other ingredients are put in the drum, water shall be added in measured quantities and mixing continued for at least two minutes to result in a concrete of a uniform colour and consistency. Mixing of cement concrete which has partially set shall never be allowed.

9 PREPARATION BEFORE CONCRETING :

The inside surface of the forms against which concrete is to be placed shall be clean and free from dried or hardened spattering or coatings of concrete. The forms shall be well watered before placing concrete.

All chutes, through pipes, and other placing equipments shall be kept clean and free from coating of hardened concrete by cleaning and thoroughly flushing with water after each run. Water used for flushing shall be discharged clear of the concrete already in place. When the work has to be resumed on a surface which has hardened, such surface shall be roughened. It shall then be swept clean, thoroughly wetted and covered with 12mm layer of freshly mixed mortar composed of cement and sand in the concrete mix, immediately before placing of concrete.

Before any concrete is placed on the subgrade, the subgrade shall be checked and approved for degree of compaction and alignment. The subgrade

shall be kept damp ahead of concreting.

The Contractor shall not deposit any concrete unless and until the representatives of the Engineer-in-Charge have inspected the forms, reinforcing steel and inserts and sleeves if any and given permission to place concrete. Concreting of any portion of the work shall be done only in the presence of the representatives of the Engineer-in-Charge.

10 PLACING :

Such methods of conveying, handling and placing the concrete shall be employed that no mortar will be lost and that the concrete as placed is dense and uniform throughout, with no lack or excess of mortar at any place. Concrete should not be dropped from a height greater than 2 mts. A properly constructed chute shall be used in such cases where it is necessary to exceed this height. Depositing a large quantity of concrete at a point and spreading it to a long distance manually or with vibrators will not be permitted.

Concrete shall be of such consistency that no appreciable amount of water is forced to the top by vibration. This generally requires that the upper concrete be of drier mix than the main body of concrete. Honeycombing due to cement adhering to reinforcement etc. shall be avoided by using extra rich mix for initial pour.

Concrete must be thoroughly worked into the forms so that they entirely filled, reinforcing bars adequately and tightly surrounded and entrained air released from the mass of concrete. Placing shall be carried out by hand prodding as well as vibrators in a manner directed by the Engineer-in-Charge. The full depth of any loft shall be placed in one pour. When casting beams or deeper sections, concrete shall not be placed in layers unless permitted by the Engineer-in-Charge.

11 COMPACTION & CONSOLIDATION :

Each layer of concrete shall be compacted fully before the succeeding layer is placed and separate layers shall follow each other so closely that the succeeding layer shall be placed and fully compacted before the layer immediately below has taken an initial set.

Concrete shall be thoroughly consolidated, during and immediately after depositing by vibrating the concrete internally by means of mechanical vibration. Adequate number of power driven vibrators shall be used to ensure full compaction of concrete within 10 minutes of placing. The vibrators shall be of a type and make approved by the Engineer-in-Charge and shall be operated according to the manufacturer's instructions. If immersion vibrators are used these shall be inserted at places not exceeding 1/2 metre apart until it is immersed to the full depth of concrete. Wherever possible shutter vibrators shall be used and the Contractor shall design his shuttering so that it can withstand from vibration.

Vibrators shall be operated by trained operators who shall carry out the given instructions regarding the method of using vibrators.

Vibration shall be commenced as soon as one batch of concrete has been placed and shall be carried out intermittently until the entire section being poured has been thoroughly vibrated. The vibrating element shall be inserted into the concrete at the point of deposit and in areas of freshly placed concrete. The time of vibration at one point shall be of sufficient duration to accomplish

thorough consolidation, complete embedment of the reinforcement, the production of smooth surface free from honey combing and air bubbles, and to work the concrete into all corners of the forms. However care shall be taken to ensure that the concrete is not over vibrated so as to cause segregation. Vibration

shall not continue to the extent that pools of grout are formed. Points of vibration shall be spaced within the radius over which vibration is visibly

effective and shall be applied close enough to the forms in order to effectively vibrate the surface of the concrete nearest to the face of the forms. The vibration shall not be dissipated to lateral motion, but shall be concentrated in vertically consolidating the concrete. The vibrating element shall be inserted in the concrete mass to sufficient depth of allowed to vibrate. If shall be withdrawn completely from the concrete before being inserted at another point.

Mechanical vibration shall be supplemented by rodding and working with hand tools to ensure full consolidation around the reinforcement and at all edges and corners.

A sufficient number of spare vibrators shall be kept readily accessible to the place of deposition of concrete to assure adequate vibration in case of breakdown of those in use.

Walking on concrete shall not be permitted for at least 24 hours after it has been placed in position, or for such additional length of time as the Engineer-in-Charge may direct.

12 CURING :

Curing of concrete shall commence immediately after stripping of forms. All exposed concrete shall be covered with hessian, sand or similar material which shall be kept continuously wet for a period of at least 15 days after casting. The top surfaces of slabs and other horizontal surfaces shall be cured by impounding water in cement mortar bunds. The ceilings of slabs shall be frequently sprayed with water until the end of the period specified for curing. After removal of hessian or sand etc., all concrete surfaces shall be kept wetted by applying water at intervals for a further period as specified.

13 CONSTRUCTION JOINTS :

Construction joints shall be made only where shown on the drawings or approved by the Engineer-in-Charge. All laitance shall be removed from the concrete before it is allowed to fully harden. The removal shall be effected by scrubbing the concrete surface with wire and bristle brushes and washing down to expose the aggregate clearly. However care shall be taken to avoid dislodgement of particles of aggregate.

If the concrete has been allowed to harden excessively, the surface shall be chipped over its whole surface to a depth of at least 10mm. and thereafter thoroughly washed. Before fresh concrete is added on the construction joint, the surface of the old concrete shall be thoroughly wetted and covered with a thin layer of cement mortar of equivalent mix. When a construction joint is formed provision shall be made for interlocking with the succeeding layer by the embedment of saturated wooden block or strips bevelled on four sides to facilitate their removal. The wooden pieces shall be loosened and removed before the concrete has fully hardened in such manner as to avoid injury to the concrete.

At the end of the day's work or run of concrete, the concrete shall be finished off against temporary shutter stop which shall be vertical and securely fixed. this stop shall be removed as soon as the weather permits.

No separate payment shall be allowed to the Contractor for forming construction joints as described above or chipping or cleaning them or covering with mortar prior to concreting.

14 INSERTS :

The Contractor shall fix all necessary inserts such as steel plates, pipe sleeves, bolts, etc. and make provision of holes, pockets, dowels, etc. in the shuttering of concrete work to enable subsequent fixing of supports, brackets, ceilings, pre-cast members, etc. as indicated in the drawings, called for in the documents or as required by the Engineer-in-Charge. Nothing extra over and above the provision as per the priced schedule of quantities shall be paid to the Contractor on this account.

15 CRACKS :

If any cracks develop in the concrete construction which in the opinion of the Engineer-in-Charge may be detrimental to the strength of the construction, the Contractor at his own expense shall test the structural element in question. If under these test loads the cracks shall develop further the Contractor at his own expense shall dismantle the construction, cart away the debris, replace the construction and carry out all consequential work there to at no extra cost.

If the cracks are not detrimental to the stability of the construction in the opinion of the Engineer-in-Charge, the Contractor at his own expense, shall grout the cracks with pneumatically applied mortar and also at his own expense and risk shall make good all other building works such as plaster, moulding, surface finish of floors, roofs, ceilings, etc. which in the opinion of the Engineer-in-Charge have suffered damage either in appearance or stability owning to such cracks.

The repair work shall be carried out to the satisfaction of the Engineer-in-Charge. The decision of the Engineer-in-Charge as to the extent of the liability of the Contractor in the above matter shall be final and binding on the Contractor. Should any concrete be found honeycombed or in any way defective, such concrete shall, on the instructions of the Engineer-in-Charge, be cut-off by the Contractor and made good at his own expense.

16 TESTING :

16.1 CUBE TESTS :

Samples from fresh concrete shall be taken as per I.S. : 1199 and cubes shall be made, cured and tested at 28 days in accordance with I.S. : 516. the sampling should be spread over the entire period of concreting and cover all mixing units to ensure that each concrete batch shall have a reasonable change of being tested. The minimum frequency of sampling of concrete of each grade shall be in accordance with following :

Three test specimens shall be made from each sample for testing at 28 days. Additional cubes shall be made to determine the strength of concrete at 7 days or at the time of skirting the formwork, or to determine the duration of curing, or to check the testing error. However, cubes shall be taken for all important structural members, as directed by the Engineer-in-Charge regardless of the quantity of the concrete involved in such members or volume of concrete laid on any particular day.

Cubes shall be taken out of the moulds 24 hours after casting and stored in moist condition till the time of the test. The tests shall be carried out in a laboratory approved by the Engineer-in-Charge. Alternatively the cubes may be tested in a Laboratory set up at the site of works by the Contractor. However in later case the cube testing machine shall be of make and type as approved by the Engineer-in-Charge and the testing shall be done in presence of representatives of the Engineer-in-Charge. Moreover the cube testing machine shall be tested for accuracy of calibration before commencement of work and at least once a fortnight Engineer-in-Charge.

All cost involved in sampling of concrete, preparation of cubes, testing of cubes and other materials shall be borne by the Contractors. Optional tests on beams for modules of rupture shall be carried out by the Contractor at

his own expenses if so desired by the Engineer-in-Charge. The test strength of the sample shall be the average of strength of three specimens. The individual variation should not be more than + or - 15% of average. For preliminary mix, both 7 days as well as 28 days strength of concrete shall be tested. Before commencing the works the Contractor shall submit full details of all preliminary trial mixes and tests for approval of the Engineer-in-Charge. Whenever there is a significant change in the quantity of any of the ingredients for concrete, the Engineer-in-Charge may at his discretion, order the carrying out of fresh preliminary trial mixes. All cost for trial mixes and tests shall be borne by the Contractor.

16.2 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA :

The minimum compressive strength for each grade of concrete shall be as provided in Clause - 3.6 above. Acceptance or rejection of concrete of each grade shall be governed by the provisions of Clause - 15 of I.S. : 456 - 1978 except that value of characteristic strength of each grade shall be taken as the 28 days compressive strength of the works test as specified in Clause - 3.6 above. All such substandard concrete shall be removed and replaced with concrete of specified strength at the Contractor's cost and risk. Items of work related to such rejected concrete shall not be paid for. However if after investigation any concrete that falls short of the acceptability criteria is accepted, it will be paid for at reduced rates as per the discretion of the Engineer-in-Charge proportionate to its work test strength.

Immediately after stripping the formwork, all concrete shall be carefully inspected. On no account shall concrete surface be patched or covered up or damaged concrete rectified or replaced until the Engineer-in-Charge has inspected the works and issued instructions for rectification or replacement. However any defective concrete and small defects shall be rectified before the concrete has hardened.

Concrete is liable to be rejected if it is porous or honeycombed, its placing has been interrupted without providing a proper construction joint, the reinforcement has been displaced beyond the tolerances specified or construction tolerances have not been met. However the hardened concrete may be accepted after carrying out suitable remedial measures to the satisfaction of the Engineer-in-Charge.

17. SUPERVISION :

All concreting work shall be done under strict supervision of the qualified and experienced representatives of the Contractor as well as those of the Engineer-in-Charge. The Contractor's Engineer and Supervisor who are in charge of concrete work, whether plain or reinforced, shall be skilled in the class of work and shall superintend personally all the concreting work and pay special attention to the following :

a) Proportioning, mixing and quality testing of the materials with particular control on the water cement ratio.

b) Laying of material in place and thorough compaction of the concrete to ensure solidity and freed from voids and honey-combing.

c) Proper curing for the requisite period. d) Reinforcements positions are not disturbed during concreting and

consolidation by vibration.

18. QUALITY CONTROL :

The Engineer-in-Charge reserves the right to change in the mix proportions including an increased cement content or a change in the Contractors control procedure or both, should the quality control during the progress of the works prove in his opinion to be inadequate.

All the work shall be true to level, plumb and square within the acceptable tolerance. The corners, edges and arises in all cases shall be unbroken and finished properly and carefully.

19. TOLERANCE :

The acceptable tolerance for the formed concrete surfaces shall be given as below :

a) Variation from plumb for columns and walls :

1. Columns and walls to be rendered - 6mm in 3 mts. 2. Exposed columns and walls. - 3mm in 3 mts.

b) Variation in cross section dimensions of columns and beams and in the thickness of slabs and walls. - 6 mm + 12 mm

20. LOAD TESTING ON COMPLETED STRUCTURES :

During the period of construction or within the defect liability period, the Engineer-in-Charge may at his discretion, order the load testing of any completed structure or any part thereof if he has reasonable doubts about the adequacy of the strength of such structure for any of the following reasons :

a) Results of compressive strength on concrete test cubes falling below the specified strength.

b) Premature removal of formwork. c) Inadequate curing of concrete. d) Over loading during construction of the structure or part thereof. e) Carrying out concreting of any portion without prior approval of the

Engineer-in-charge to carry out such work.

f) Honey - combed or damaged concrete which in the opinion of the Engineer-in-Charge is particularly weak and will effect the ability of the structure to carry out the design load, more so in important or critical areas of the structure.

g) Any other circumstances attributable to alleged negligence of the Contractor which in the opinion of the Engineer-in-Charge may result in the structure or any part thereof being of less than the expected strength.

All the loading tests shall be carried out by the Contractor strictly in accordance with the instructions of the Engineer-in-Charge. Such tests should be carried out only after expiry of minimum 28 days or such longer period as directed by the Engineer-in-Charge.

The structure should be subjected to a super imposed load equal to 1.25

times the specified super imposed load assumed in the design. This load shall be maintained for a period of 24 hours before removal. During the test, struts strong enough to take the whole load shall be placed in position leaving a gap under the members as directed.

The deflection due to the super imposed load shall be recorded by

sufficient number of approved deflect meters capable of reading up to 1/500 of a cm. and located suitable under the structure as directed by the Engineer-in-Charge. If within 24 hours of the removal of the superimposed load, the structure does not recover at least 75% of the deflection the structure does not recover at least 75% of the deflection under the superimposed load, the test loading shall be repeated after a lapse of 72 hours. If the recovery after the second test is less than 80% of the maximum deflection shown during the second test, the structure shall be considered to have failed to pass the test and shall be deemed to be unacceptable. In such cases the part of the work concerned shall be taken down or cut out and reconstructed to comply with the specifications or that other remedial measures shall be taken to make the structure secure at his discretion of the Engineer-in-Charge. Moreover these shall be carried out to the complete satisfaction of the Engineer-in-Charge. The Contractor shall take down or cutout or reconstruct the defective work or shall make the remedial measures instructed at his own cost.

All costs involved in carrying out the test and other incidental expense there to shall be borne by the Contractor regardless of the result of the tests.

In addition to the above load tests, non destructive test methods such as core test and ultrasonic pulse velocity test shall be carried out by Contractor at his own expense if so desired by the Engineer-in-Charge. The acceptance criteria for these tests shall be mutually agreed between the Engineer-in-Charge and the Contractor. However such test shall be carried out by an agency approved by the Engineer-in-Charge and shall be done under expert guidance using only recommended testing equipment.

SECTION : B FORMWORK :

1. GENERAL :

The term "Formwork" or "Shuttering" shall include all forms, moulds, sheeting’s, shuttering planks walkers, poles, posts, shores, struts and strutting, ties, uprights, steel rods, bolts, wedges and all other temporary supports to the concrete during the process of setting.

All shuttering planks shall be adequately supported by a sufficient number and size of walkers with supporting members to ensure rigidity of forms during concreting. To avoid delay and unnecessary rejection of forms, the Contractor shall obtain the approval of the Engineer-in-Charge for the design of forms and the type of timber used and prepare actual samples of different types of about 10 sqm. for his satisfaction, before fabricating forms.

Struts, braces, ties, and props shall be of adequate size and number to support and shutters rigidly in place during concreting and shall be strong enough to withstand vibration. Joints in props shall not be allowed.

If formwork is held together by bolts or wires, those shall be so fixed that no iron shall be exposed on surface against which concrete is to be laid. The Engineer-in-Charge may at his discretion allow the Contractor to use tie bolts running through the concrete at his own cost and the Contractor decide the location and size of such tie-bolts in consultation with Engineer-in-Charge. Holes left in the concrete by these tie bolts shall be filled as specified by him at the Contractor's expense.

2. TYPES OF SHUTTERING :

Shuttering shall be of plywood, steel, or any other material approved by the Engineer-in-Charge. All shuttering shall be capable of resisting damage to the contact faces under normal conditions of erecting forms, fixing steel and placing concrete.

2.1 PLYWOOD SHUTTERING :

Plywood used for shuttering shall be 12mm thick shuttering quality plywood complying with I.S. : 4990 and of approved make. (Anchor shuttering plywood or equivalent approved by the Engineer-in-Charge).

2.2 STEEL SHUTTERING :

Steel shuttering shall be made of 4mm thick black sheets stiffened with angle iron frame made out of M.S. angles 40mm x 40mm x 6mm.

3. CAMBER :

The formwork shall be given an upward camber to allow for deflection when loaded with wet concrete. Forms and false work shall be cambered as described below unless otherwise shown or specified :

4. ERECTION OF FORM WORKS :

The formwork shall conform to shapes, lines, levels, and dimensions of the concrete shown in drawings and shall be so designed and constructed by the Contractor that it remains sufficiently rigid during and after placing and compaction of concrete. Joints and formwork shall be designed to prevent leakage, not only between individual elements forming the panels but also from the horizontal and vertical junction between the panels themselves. Care shall be taken that all formwork is set plumb and true to line and level of camber or better where required and as specified by the Engineer-in-charge without twists.

All shutter shall be adequately strutted and braced and grooved to the satisfaction of the Engineer-in-Charge to prevent deflection under the dead weight of concrete and superimposed live load of workmen materials and plant Horizontal and vertical supports to the formwork shall be maintained on the foundations or other parts of the works which are sufficiently stiff and strong to afford the required support without damage or distress.

Formwork shall be so arranged as to permit removal without jarring the concrete. Wedges, clamps and bolts shall be used wherever practicable instead of nails.

The formwork shall be sufficiently tight to prevent the loss of liquid from the concrete and to produce a dense, homogenous and uniformly colored concrete completely free from hone-combing or surface roughness.

5. CLEANING & TREATMENT :

Temporary openings shall be left at the bottom of formwork to enable sawdust, shavings, wire cuttings and other foreign material to be worked out from the interior of the forms before the concrete is placed.

After each use surfaces of forms in contact with concrete shall be cleaned, well wetted and treated with form oil approved by the Engineer-in-Charge to prevent adhesion to the concrete.

Oiling shall be done before reinforcement has been placed and care shall be taken that no oil comes in contact with reinforcement while it is being placed in position. The formwork shall be kept thoroughly wet during concreting and for the whole time that it is left in place.

Immediately before concreting is commenced, the formwork shall be carefully examined to see that all dirt, shavings, saw dust and other foreign refuse have been removed by brushing, washing and cleaning it. The formwork shall be wetted thoroughly to prevent absorption of water from concrete. All formwork erected shall be approved by the Engineer-in-Charge before concrete is started.

6. REMOVAL OF FORMWORK :

Formwork shall be removed carefully and gradually to prevent sudden application of loads to the concrete.

Forms shall not be removed until the concrete has attained sufficient strength to ensure structural stability and to carry both the dead and live loads including the construction loads which may be placed upon it. Unless otherwise permitted in writing by the Engineer-in-Charge the minimum period for keeping formwork in position shall be as per I.S. : 456.

The Engineer-in-Charge may vary the above period if he considers it necessary for structural stability. Immediately after the forms are removed, they shall cleaned with jet of water and a soft brush.

7. REUSE OF FORMS :

The Contractor shall not be permitted re-use of any shuttering which in the opinion of the Engineer-in-Charge has worn out and has become unfit for shuttering. The Engineer-in-Charge may in his absolute discretion order rejection of any forms he considers unfit for use in the works, and order their removal from the site.

8. HACKING :

Immediately after removal of forms, the concrete surface intended to be either plastered or any other finish shall be roughened with brush hammer or with chisel and hammer as directed by the Engineer-in-Charge to make the surface sufficiently coarse and rough to provide a key for plaster. No extra payments shall be made to the Contractor for such work on concrete surface after removal of the formwork.

No payment shall be made for temporary formworks used in concreting, nor for formworks required for joints or bulkheads, in floor or elsewhere where such joints are to be covered later with concrete or mastic or with other materials.

9. POCKETS OPENINGS :

Where boxes or pockets or openings are required [not exceeding 0.1 sqm.] to be formed in the concrete, no deduction shall be made for the area of box or pockets in measuring the area of concrete surface shuttered. In other words the area of shuttering shall be reckoned as if the box or pocket or openings were not present. If the area of box or pocket or opening against the shutter faces exceeds 0.1 sqm. it shall be paid not as a box or pocket or openings but as formwork at the rates for formwork.

No extra payment shall be made for holes to be made in the formwork for inserting electrical conduits, hooks, inserts etc.

10. EXPOSED CONCRETE WORK :

Where it is desired, directed or shown in the drawings to have original fair face finish of the concrete surface without any rendering or plastering, to obtain such surfaces concrete work shall be carried out by carrying out wood planks, plywood or steel shuttering of approved quality and as per direction of the Engineer-in-Charge.

The formwork shall be assembled in such a way as to facilitate removal of their arts in proper sequences without any damage to the exposed cement surface and corners etc. The concrete surface after removing shuttering shall be absolutely free from honey-combing, exposed off sets, superfluous mortars, cement slurry and foreign matters and shall be of uniform colour. In order to obtain exposed concrete work of uniform colour it shall be necessary to ensure that the sand used for all the exposed concrete work shall be of uniform approved colour. Moreover the cement used in the concrete for any complete element shall be from single consignment. No concrete surface shall be rendered or painted with cement or otherwise.

The Contractor shall keep skilled staff for special care and supervision to check the formwork and concreting so that every member is made true to its size, shape, level and plumb so that it does not result in any deformation, sag or bulges etc.

The wood planks, plywood, and steel shuttering used in formwork for obtaining exposed surface shall not be used for more than 3 times in the case of wood planks, 6 times for plywood shuttering and 10 times for steel shuttering respectively and it shall have even and smooth contact surfaces and its joints shall be sufficiently water tight or have tongue and grooved joints if required to prevent leakage of grout or water. No shuttering shall be allowed for re-use, if in the opinion of the Engineer-in-Charge it is doubtful to produce desired texture of exposed concrete. All surfaces of timber or steel shuttering in contact with concrete shall if required be coated with approved shuttering oil without any colour or pigment. The formwork shall be wetted thoroughly to prevent absorption of water from concrete.

The chamfers, beveled edges and mouldings shall be made in the form itself. Centering used for supporting formwork shall be absolutely rigid. It is not intended to use intricate pattern of formwork, however, the sizes, layouts and locations of joints and through bolts shall have prior approval of the Engineer-in-Charge before proceeding with the laying of concrete. The Contractor shall also take suitable precautionary measures to prevent breaking and chipping of corners and edges of completed work until the building is handed over. Extra payment for shuttering of exposed surfaces of concrete shall be made for such exposed surfaces as are visible after the completion of the work. No payment for surface covered under false ceiling, skirting, veneering, etc. shall be made under this item. No extra claims on account of making grooves, drip courses, bands, etc., shall be entertained.

When bolts used for holding the shuttering cannot be pulled out, the same bolts shall be left in position and the projecting ends shall have to be cut flush with the exposed surface. Skirts and runners shall be of adequate size to avoid bending.

SECTION : C REINFORCEMENT WORK :

1. SPECIFICATIONS FOR STEEL REINFORCEMENT :

1.1. MATERIALS : The steel reinforcement used shall be either of the following types :

Mild steel of tested quality conforming to Grade - I as specified in I.S. : 432 Part - I. High yield strength deformed bars with a guaranteed minimum yield strength of 4258 kg. per sq.cm. conforming to I.S. : 1786 or I.S. : 1139 as called for on the drawings. Fabric reinforcement where called for shall be of hard drawn steel wire mesh conforming to I.S.: 1566. All steel shall be procured from SAIL/TISCO and/or of their authorised Agent/Dealer. The reinforcing bars shall be free from mill scale, loose rust, grease, oil, paint or any other deleterious material. Every bar shall be inspected before assembling on the work and defective, brittle or burnt bar shall be discarded. Cracked ends of bars shall be cutout. The reinforcement shall be get tested as per provisions of I.S. Code to ensure the quality of reinforcement.

1.2. FABRICATION : Prior to commencement of fabrication of reinforcement works, the Contractor shall prepare bar bending schedules from the structural drawings supplied to him and get them approved from the Engineer-in-Charge.

1.3.

BENDING :

All bars shall be carefully and accurately bent in accordance with I.S. : 2502 and the relevant structural drawings. It shall be ensured that :

The bars are not bent or straightened in any manner that will injure the material. The depth of the crank is correct as per bar cutting and bending schedule. Hooks for mild steel bars shall be a complete semicircular turn with a radius of not less than 4 and not more than 6 bar diameters plus an extension of at least 4 bar diameters at the free end. Alternatively they can be a 90 degrees bend having a radius of not less than 4 bar diameters plus an extension of 12 bar diameters.

1.4.

LAPPING :

As far as possible bars of maximum length available shall be used. Laps shown on drawings or otherwise specified by the Engineer-in-Charge shall be based on the use of bars of maximum length by the Contractor. In case the Contractor wishes to use shorter bars, laps shall be provided at the Contractor's cost in the manner and the locations approved by the Engineer-in-Charge. Not more than 1/3rd of the bars or as specified in the drawings shall be lapped at one section. Welded laps shall be provided when specified in accordance with Clause - 9 below.

1.5.

SPACING, SUPPORTING & BINDING :

All reinforcement shall be placed and maintained in the position shown on the drawings. The Contractor shall provide approved type of supports for maintaining the bars in position and ensuring required spacing and correct cover as called for in the drawings. All bars crossing one another shall be bound with 18 gauge annealed steel wire. The wire shall be twisted properly to make the skeleton or net work rigid so that the reinforcement is not displaced during placing of concrete. Welding of crossing bars [take welding] shall not be done except as authorised or directed by the Engineer-in-Charge. Nothing extra will be paid for tack welding. Cement mortar [1:2] blocks of required shape [cast well in advance] M.S. Chairs and spacer bars shall be used in order to ensure accurate positioning of reinforcement. All reinforcing steel within a limit of a days pour shall be in place and firmly wired at least one day prior to the date of pour to permit inspection.

CLEANING :

Bars must be thoroughly cleaned before concrete is commenced. The bars shall be cleaned with dry gunny bags if they are coated lightly with rust or other impurities. On no account the bars shall be oiled or painted or mould oil used on the form work be allowed to come in contact with the bars.

COVER TO REINFORCEMENT :

Care shall be taken to maintain the correct cover to reinforcement. Unless otherwise specified on the drawings, the clear covers shall be provided in all reinforced concrete work as per I.S. : 456. For concrete members exposed to the atmosphere, action of harmful chemicals, acid vapour, saline atmosphere, sulfurous smoke etc. covers shall be increased by 15 mm. to 40mm as directed by the Engineer-in-Charge. For concrete members of water retaining structures, covers for reinforcement shall be as stipulated in I.S. : 13370 [Part - II]. The grade of concrete for cover block should not be leaner than M20 grade. MEASUREMENT :

The weight of steel to be paid shall be based on linear measurement of the bar and the weight coefficient of the bar but excluding binding wires, chairs and space bars. Laps as specified on the drawings will be paid for. However laps required because of Contractor's use of shorter bars shall not be paid for.

WELDED LAPS :

Wherever specified on the drawings or instructed by the Engineer-in-Charge welded laps shall be provided and paid for separately unless specifically included in the item of work.

The welding of bars shall be done in accordance with I.S. : 816 and specified on the

drawings and instruction. The length of longitudinal bead to weld cold twisted deformed bars shall be 19 diameters of the bar of which not more than half the length shall be permitted for a continuous bead. Gaps as indicated in the drawings shall be provided between such consecutive beads. No welding shall be done at the bend in a bar. The Contractor shall employ a qualified and tested welder specially trained and experienced in welding of reinforcement bars to execute the welding of laps to the complete satisfaction of the Engineer-in-Charge. Before doing the welding of bars at site the Contractor shall make minimum 3 joints and get them tested in an approved laboratory. The following precautions must be taken for welded laps :

If the cold twisted deformed bar to be lapped has an untwisted end at the lapping point, the same portion shall be cut off prior to welding upto a length of at least 10 cms. from such end. Bars shall be free from rust at the joints to be welded. Bars shall be aligned and kept in proper axis in order to minimise crookedness in bar after welding. Slag produced in welding after alternative run should be chipped and removed by brush. Electrode should not be lighted by touching the hot bar.

SECTION : D BRICK WORK & FINISHING WORK ETC. :

Brickwork: Bricks The bricks shall be locally available kiln burnt bricks of generally regular and uniform size, shape & colour, uniformly well burn but not over burnt. The bricks shall be free from cracks, chips, flaws, stones or lumps of any kind and the rating of efflorescence shall not be more than "moderate", when tested as per I.S. 3495of latest edition. They shall not have any part un burnt. They shall not break even after being dropped on the ground on their flat face in a standard condition from a height of 60 cm.

The size of brick shall normally 230 mm x 115 mm x 75 mm .Bricks of one standard size shall be used on one work unless specially permitted by the ENGINEER / CONSULTANT.

After immersion in water, absorption by weight shall not be exceed 20% of dry weight of the brick when tested according to IS 1077 of latest edition. Unless otherwise specified the load to crush the brick when tested according to IS 1077of latest edition shall not be less than 75 Kg/Sq.cm. Prior approval of Engineer /Consultant shall be obtained for the brands of bricks to be used in the work after compliance with the above specifications/tests.

Mortar : Unless otherwise specified, mortar for brick work shall be composed of 1 part of cement to 6 parts of approved sand for walls of one brick thick (25 cm) and over and one part of cement to 4 parts of approved sand for half brick thick and brick on edge walls

Construction Details

Soaking: All brick shall be immersed in water for 24 hours before being put into work so that they will be saturated and will not absorb water from the mortar.

Bats : No bats or cut bricks shall be used in the work unless absolutely necessary around irregular openings or for adjusting the dimensions of different course and for closers, in which case, full bricks shall be laid at corners, the bats being placed on the middle of the courses. Laying: The bricks shall be laid in mortar to line, level and shapes shown on the plan, slightly pressed and thoroughly bedded in mortar and all joints shall be properly flushed and packed with mortar so that they will be completely filled with mortar and no hollows left anywhere. Bricks shall be handled carefully so as not to damage their edges. They should not also be thrown from any height to the ground but should be put down gently. All course shall be laid true to horizontal and all vertical joints made truly vertical. Vertical joints on one course and the next below should not come over one another and shall not normally be nearer than quarter of a brick length. For battered faces beading shall be at right angles to the face. Fixtures, plugs, frames etc. if any, shall be built in at place shown in the plans while laying the courses only and not later by removal of bricks already laid .The top layer of bricks of one or more thick wall coming in contact with R.C.C beam, slab and at window sill level etc. shall be laid on edge as per direction. Care shall be taken during construction to see that edges of bricks at quoins, sills, heads etc. are not damaged .The verticality of the walls and horizontality of the courses shall be checked very often with plumb bob and spirit level respectively .All external wall should have fair face on exterior surface.

Bond: Unless otherwise specified, brick work shall be done in English Bond. All walls, coming in contract with reinforced concrete columns, beams etc. should be properly bonded by inserting reinforcements. Extra labour shall be included in the rates (reinforcements will be measured and paid separately again strain for cement item provided in the Schedule of Quantities. Joints: Joints shall not exceed l0 mm (about 3/8") in thickness and this thickness shall be uniform throughout. The joints shall be raked out not less than l0mm (about 3/18") deep when the mortar is green where pointing is to be done. When the brick surface are to be plastered, the joints shall be raked to a depth of 5 mm when the mortar is green, so as to provide good key to plaster.

Uniform Raising: Brick work shall be carried up regularly in all cases where the nature of work will admit, not leaving any part 60 mm lower than another. But where building at different levels is necessary, the bricks shall be stepped so as to give later at uniform level and effective bond. Horizontal courses should be to line and level, and face plumb or to later as shown on the plan. The rate of laying masonry maybe up to a height of 80 cm (about 32") per day.

Scaffolding: The scaffolding must be of approved type strong and rigid stiffened with necessary cross bracings and safe to prevent injury to persons or materials. The contractor shall have to allow other trades to make reasonable use of his scaffolding as directed by the Engineer/ Consultant If for the interest of work the contractor have to erect scaffolding in the other properties including local bodies or Corporation, the arrangement for the same including the cost of licensing fees etc. shall have to be borne by the contractor and the Engineer should be kept free from any liability on this account .Put log holes shall be made good by bricks to match the face work when put logs are removed after ensuring that the holes behind are solidly filled in with 1:4:8 cement concrete. Curing: All brick works shall be kept well watered for 14 days after laying. While pozzolana cement is used for mortar the curing shall be extended by one week at contractor’s expense.

Cement Plaster :( Internal & External):

In general the Plastering Work is to be carried out as per the specification stipulated in IS: 1661.

Preparation of Surface: The walls to be plastered to have all joints raked out to a depth of 10 mm, if not already done. R.C.C surface shall be properly hacked to get good key to the plaster. All dust and oily matter, if any, shall be brushed and cleaned and surface to be plastered shall be kept wet for 6 hours before plastering is commenced. Proportion of Mortar: The plaster in walls, lintels, columns, ceiling, ceiling beams, projected slabs, rails, hajji, marquise, domes etc. shall be done with sand cement mortar in the proportion as described in the Schedule of Quantities). No more cement mortar shall be prepared than that can be used within half an hours.

Application of Plaster:

The mortar shall be applied evenly with force on the surface to be plastered. The mortar surface shall be finished at once by being rubbed over with a trowel till the cement appears on the surface. All corners, angles and junctions shall be truly vertical and horizontal as the case may be, carefully and neatly finished. Rounding of corners and junctions where required shall be done without extra charge. The mortar shall adhere to the surface intimately when set and there should be no hollow sound when struck.

When neat cement finish is specified over the plaster surface, a coat of pure Portland cement slurry, l.5 mm thick shall be applied and well rubbed to the plaster surface while the plaster surface is stil l fresh. When no finish is specified, the plastered surface shall be rubbed well to an even plane with a wooden float for external surface and finished smooth with a steel trowel for internal surface. Rates to include : Apart from other factors mentioned elsewhere in the contract rates for the item of plaster shall include for the following :- Erecting, dismantling and removing the scaffolding. Preparing the surface to receive the plaster. Providing cement plaster of the specified average thickness. All labour, materials, use of tools and equipment, Scaffolding, staging as applicable to complete the plastering as per specification. Curing for 7 days. Any moulding work if shown on the drawings or as specified unless separately provided in the tender. Labour for plastering the surface in two operations when thickness of plaster is more than 20mm thick. Plaster work in bends, arises, rounded angles, fair edges, narrow returns , quriks 'V' joints, splays, drip mouldings, making good to metal frame junctions with skirting of dados narrow width and small quantities, making good round pipes, conduits, timbers, sills, brackets, railings, etc. and making good after all the sub-contractors or nominated sub-contractors have done their work. Groove lines, drip course, beading/bands, moulding etc. Mode of Measurement: Plaster shall be measured in square metre. Walls: The measurement of wall plastering shall be taken between the walls or partitions (the dimensions before plastering shall be taken) for the length and from the top of floor or skirting depending upon the situation to the ceiling for the height. Deductions : For jambs soffits, sills, etc. for openings not exceeding 0.5 sqm each in area, ends of joists, beams, posts, girders, steps etc. not exceeding 0.5sqm each in area, and opening not exceeding 3 sqm each, deductions and additions shall be made in the following manners :- No deductions shall be made for ends of joists, beams, posts, etc. and openings not exceeding 0.5 sqm and no additions shall be made for reveals, jambs, soffits sills etc. of these openings nor for finishing the plaster around ends of joists, beams, posts, etc . Deductions for openings exceeding 0.5 m2 but not exceeding 3 m2 each shall be made as follows and no addition shall be made for reveals ,jambs, soffits, sills etc. of these openings:- When both faces of wall are plastered with the same type of plaster, deduction shall be made for one face only.

When two faces of wall are plastered with different type of plasters or if one face is plastered and other pointed, deductions shall be made in the plaster or pointing on the side on which the width of reveals is less than that on the other side but no deduction shall be made from plaster or pointing on the other side. Where widths of reveals on both faces of wall are equal, deduction of 50 per cent of area of opening on each face shall be made from areas of plastering and/or pointing as the case may be. When width of door frame is equal to thickness of wall or is projecting beyond thickness of wall, full deduction for opening shall be made from each plastered/pointed face of the wall. In case of openings of area above 3 sqm each deductions shall be made for the openings but jambs, soffits and sills shall be measured.

Floorings:

Scope

This part of the specification covers providing, laying, finishing, curing, testing, protection, maintenance till handing over various types of floor finishes and allied items of work as listed below: Vitrified floor tile finish Ceramic tile floor finish

General

Base: The base to receive the finish either formed concrete sub-base or floor slab covered under other relevant specifications. Commencement, scheduling and sequence of the finishing works shall be planned in detail and must be specifically approved by the Engineer/Engineer / Consultant, keeping in view the activities of other agencies working in the area. However, the contractor shall remain fully responsible for all normal precautions and vigilance to prevent any damage whatsoever till handing over. Only workers specially experienced in particular items of finishing work shall be engaged; where such workers are not readily available, with the Engineer / Engineer / Consultant’s permission, experienced supervisors recommended by the manufacturer shall be engaged. In particular cases where the Consultant so desire, the Contractor shall get the finishing items installed by the manufacturer.

The surface to the treated shall be thoroughly examined by the Contractor. Any rectification necessary shall be brought to the notice of the Consultant and his approval shall be obtained regarding method and extent shall be included in of the rectification work and the cost of the same the quoted price no additional claim on this regard shall be entertained for all types of flooring, skirting, dado and similar works the base to receive the finish shall be adequately roughened by chipping, raking out joints and cleaning thoroughly all dirt, grease etc., with water and hard brush and (detergent if required, unless otherwise directed by the manufacturer of any special finishing treatment, the base shall be thoroughly soaked with water and all excess water mopped up. The surface shall be done dry where adhesive are used for fixing the finishes. Prior to commencement of actual finishing the approval of the ENGINEER/ CONSULTANT shall be taken as to the acceptability of the surface.

Flooring in any Industrial Structure may have to be done in discontinuous strips or areas to suit the equipment erection. The flooring shall be done in close co-ordination with other agencies and shall keep pace with the requirements of erection.

Codes and Standards:

All applicable standards, acts and codes of practice referred to shall be the latest editions including all applicable official amendments and revisions. A complete set of all these documents shall generally be available at site, with the Contractor.

The Civil works for flooring shall in general conform to the following standard.

IS 13630:1993 Method of test for ceramic tile IS 15622:2006 Specification for pressed ceramic tile

IS: 13753:1993 Specification for dust pressed ceramic tiles with water absorption.

Materials

Materials required for individual finishing items are specified under respective items. In general, all such materials shall be as per relevant IS Codes where available. In all cases these materials shall be of the best quality available indigenously unless specified otherwise.

The materials for finishing items must be procured from well-reputed specified manufacturers and on the basis of prior approval of samples by the Engineer / Engineer / Consultant. To maintain the construction schedules .the materials shall be ordered, procured and stored well in advance to avoid

compulsion to use substandard items or mismatch in shades in different batches.

Vitrified Tile Flooring Dado / Skirting / Facia

Materials Vitrified Tiles: The tiles shall be procured from the authorised distributers of the following brands:

Marbonite Bell Nitco Johnson

The tiles shall generally conform to EN-87 or IS-13712/IS-13630. They shall be flat and true to shape, free from cracks, crazing spots, chipped edges and corners. Unless otherwise specified, the nominal sizes of tiles shall be as under: The tiles shall be square or rectangular of nominal sizes such as: 600 x 600 mm; 900 x 900 mm or as per tender schedule / drawings or as directed by the Engineer / Consultant. Thickness shall be as per recommendations of the approved manufacturers. Technical specifications of the tiles shall be generally conforming to the following properties: Deviation in length (+/-) 0.6%. Straightness of sides (+/-) 0.5% Rectangularity (+/-) 0.6% Surface flatness (+/-) 0.5% Water absorption < 0.50% Mohs. hardness>6 Flexural strength > 27 N / mm2 Abrasion resistance < 204 mm2 Skid resistance (friction coefficient) >0.4 Glossiness Min. 85% reflection

The tiles shall conform to the relevant standards in all respects. Contractor to obtain approval of the samples and shade/ design of tiles from the Engineer / Consultant before bulk procurement for incorporation in the work.

Preparation of Surface for Flooring: Following procedure shall be followed: Sub grade concrete or RCC slab or side brick wall / or plastered surfaces on which tiles are to be laid shall be cleaned, wetted and mopped. Mortar and bedding: Cement mortar for bedding shall be prepared of mix 1:4 or as specified in the schedule of items, to a consistent paste and shall conform to the specification for materials, preparations etc. as specified under cement mortar. The amount of water added while preparing mortar shall be the minimum necessary to give sufficient plasticity for laying. Care shall be taken in preparation of the mortar to ensure that there are no hard lumps that would interfere with even bedding of the tiles. Before spreading the mortar bed the base shall be cleaned off all dirt, scum or laitance and loose materials and well wetted without forming any pools of water on the surface. The mortar of specified proportion and thickness shall then be evenly and smoothly spread over the base by use of screed battens to proper level or slope. Once the mix is prepared, no further water be added and the same shall be used within one hour of adding water. Apply on an average 20 mm thick bedding of mortar over an area of 1 sqm. At a time over surface of the area for laying tiles, in proper level and allowed to harden sufficiently to offer a fairly good cushion for the tiles to set.

Laying of Tiles for Flooring: The tiling work shall be done as per the pattern shown in the drawing or as directed by the Engineer / Consultant. As a general practice laying of tiles shall be commenced from the centre of the area and advanced towards the walls. Cut tiles, if any, shall be laid along wall with necessary border pattern as shown / directed by the ENGINEER /Engineer / Consultant. Tiling work shall be completed by pressing tiles firmly into place along the wall / floor. A white cement slurry to the back of the tile to be applied to ensure proper and full bedding. The tiles shall be laid on the bedding mortar when it is still plastic but has become sufficiently stiff to offer a fairly firm cushion for the tiles. Tiles, which are fixed on the flooring adjoining the wall, shall be so arranged that the surface on the round edge tiles shall correspond to the skirting or dado. Press gently the tile with wooden mallet for even adherence at the back of the tile. Do not use an iron hammer or some heavy material to press the tile. The edges of the tiles shall be smeared with neat white cement slurry and fixed in this grout one after the other, each tile being well pressed and gently tapped with a wooden mallet till it is properly bedded and in level with the adjoining tiles. There shall be no hollows in bed or joints. The joints shall be kept as close as possible and in straight line. Unless otherwise specified, joint less tiling shall be done butting the tiles with each other. If joint is specified, the same shall not exceed 1 mm. in width. The joint shall be grouted with white / matching colour cement slurry. After fixing the tiles, finally in an even plane or slope, the flooring shall be covered with wets and allowed undisturbed for 14 days. Fixing Tiles for Dado & Skirting / Facia: The fixing of tiles on wall surfaces shall be done only after completing fixing of the tiles on the floor. Following procedure shall be followed; the back of tiles shall be cleaned off and covered with layer of approved adhesive with proper towelling as per manufacturer's recommendations. The edges of the tiles shall be smeared with the adhesive and fixed on the wall one after the other, each tile being well pressed and gently tapped with a wooden mallet till it is properly fixed in level with the adjoining tiles. There shall be no hollows on the back or in joints. Unless otherwise specified, joint-less tiling shall be done butting the tiles with each other. If joint is specified, the same shall not exceed 1 mm. in width. The joint shall be grouted with approved adhesive. The joints shall be kept in straight line or as per the approved pattern while fixing tiles in dado / skirting work, care shall be taken to break the joints vertically. The top line shall be touched up neatly with the rest of the plaster above. If doors, windows or other openings are located within the dado area, the corners, sills, jambs etc., shall be provided with true right angles without any specials. The contractor will not be entitled to any extra claims on this account for cutting of tiles if required. The fixing shall be done from bottom of wall to upward without any hollows in the bed of joints. Each tile shall be as close as possible to one adjoining. All tiles faces shall be in one vertical plane.

Grouting of Joints in Floor / Skirting / Dado: The joints, if specified, shall be cleaned off and all dust and loose particles removed. Joints shall then be filled with approved adhesive like BAL-ENDURA or equivalent grouts. After finishing the grouting process, after 15 minute, wipe off excess grout with a damp sponge and polish the tiles with a soft & dry cloth for a clean surface. The Finished work shall not sound hollow when tapped with a wooden mallet. Cleaning: As directed by the Engineer / Consultant, the tiles shall be cleaned by mild acid (However, Hydrofluoric acid and its derivatives should not be used). After the tiles have been laid in a room or the days fixing work is completed, the surplus cement grout / adhesive that may have come out of the joints shall be cleaned off before it sets. The dado / skirting shall be thoroughly cleaned. In the case of flooring, once the floor has set, the floor shall be carefully washed clean and dried. When drying, the floor shall be covered with oil free dry sawdust. It shall be removed only after completion of the construction work and just before the floor is used. Mode of Measurement and Rate: Dado / flooring / skirting shall be measured in sq. m. correct to two places of decimal. Length and breadth shall be measured correct to 1 cm between the exposed surfaces of skirting or dado. No deductions shall be made nor extra paid for any opening of area up to 0.1 sq. m. The rate shall include all the cost of labour and materials involved. Cleaning Agents for Vitrified Tiles: Vitrified tiles are resistant to all chemicals (except hydrofluoric acid and its derivatives), hence commercially available detergents and cleaning agents can also be used for regular maintenance. Any spills and stains must be removed immediately. If left dry they may leave stains, which may be difficult to remove completely.

Non-skid ceramic tiles :

General: The tiles shall be of approved make and shall generally conform to IS: 15622. They shall be flat and true to shape and free from blisters, crazing, chips, welts, crawling or other imperfections detracting from their appearance. The tiles shall be tested in accordance with IS: 13630. The tiles shall be square or rectangular of nominal size such as 400 x 400 mm, 300 x 300 mm or as directed by the Engineer / Consultant. The thickness of the tiles shall be 8 mm minimum. The tiles shall be of approved make like Kajaria / Nitco/Johnson etc. Tolerance in Size: The length of all four sides shall be measured correct to 0.1 mm and average length / breadth shall not vary more than ± 0.8 mm from the specified dimension. The variation of individual dimension from average value of length/breadth shall not exceed ± 0.5 mm. Tolerance in thickness shall be ± 0.4 mm. NOTE: The actual size of tiles supplied may l be 1 mm less so that with 1 mm joint, the tile when laid shall conform to the nominal size. The top surface of the tiles shall be glazed and the glaze shall be either glossy or matt as specified. The underside of the tiles shall not have glaze on more than 5% of the area in order that the tile may adhere properly to the base. The edges of the tiles shall be preferably free from glaze. However, any glaze if unavoidable, shall be permissible on only up to 50 per cent of the surface area of the edges. Preparation of Surface and Laying: Base concrete or the RCC slab on which the tiles are to be laid shall be cleaned, wetted and mopped. The bedding for the tile shall be with cement mortar 1:4 (1 cement: 4 coarse sand) or as specified. The average thickness of the bedding shall be 10 mm while the thickness under any portion of the tiles shall not be less than 5 mm. Mortar shall be spread, tamped and corrected to proper levels and allowed to harden sufficiently to offer a fairly rigid cushion for the tiles to be set and to enable the mason to place wooden plank across and squat on it. Over this mortar bedding neat grey cement slurry of honey like consistency shall be spread at the rate of 3.3 kg of cement per square metre over such an area as would accommodate about twenty tiles. Tiles shall be soaked in water washed clean and shall be fixed in this grout one after another, each tile gently being tapped with a wooden mallet till it is properly bedded and in level with the adjoining tiles. The joints shall be kept as thin as possible and in straight lines or to suit the required pattern. The surface of the flooring during laying shall be frequently checked with a straight edge about 2 m long, so as to obtain a true surface with the required slope. Where full size tiles cannot be fixed these shall be cut (sawn) to the required size, and their edge rubbed smooth to ensure straight and true joints. Tiles which are fixed in the floor adjoining the wall shall enter not less than 10 mm under the plaster, skirting or dado. After tiles have been laid surplus cement slurry shall be cleaned off. Pointing and Finishing: The joints shall be cleaned off the grey cement slurry with wire/coir brush or trowel to a depth of2 mm to 3 mm and all dust and loose mortar removed. Joints shall then be flush pointed with white cement added with pigment if required to match the colour of tiles. The floor shall then be kept wet for 7 days. After curing, the surface shall be washed and finished clean.

Acceptance Criteria: The finished floor shall not sound hollow when tapped with a wooden mallet. No loose tiles shall be accepted. Joints cannot be too wide and too narrow, and shall be in straight lines or as per the layout drawing. Joints shall be parallel to wall and orthogonal.

Ceramic Tiles in Skirting and Dado: The tiles shall be of approved make and shall generally conform to IS: 15622. The tiles shall be of earthenware covered by a glaze thoroughly matured and fitted to the body. The tiles shall be sound, true to shape, flat and free from flaws and other manufacturing defects affecting their utility.

Preparation of Surfaces: The joints shall be raked out to a depth of at least 10 mm in masonry walls.

Case of concrete walls, the surface shall be hacked and roughened with wire brushes. The surface shall be cleaned thoroughly, washed with water and kept wet before skirting is commenced.

Laying: 12 mm thick plaster of cement mortar 1:4 (1 cement: 4 coarse sand) mix or as specified shall be applied and allowed to harden. The plaster shall be roughened with wire brushes or by scratching diagonally at close intervals. The tiles shall be soaked in water for one day, washed clean, and a coat of buttery cement slurry applied liberally at the back of the tiles and set in the bedding mortar. The tiles shall be tamped and corrected to proper plane and lines. Tiles shall be set in the required pattern and jointed. The joints shall be as fine as possible. Top of skirting or dado shall be truly horizontal and joints truly vertical except where otherwise indicated. Skirting and dado shall rest on the top of the flooring. Where full size tiles cannot be fixed these shall be cut (sawn) to the required size and their edges rubbed smooth.

Curing and Finishing: The joints shall be cleaned off the grey cement grout with wire/coir brush or trowel to a depth of2 mm to 3 mm and all dust and loose mortar removed. Joints shall then be flush pointed with white cement added with pigments if required to match the colour of tiles. The work shall then be kept wet for 7 days. Acceptance Criteria: After curing, the surface shall be washed and finished clean. The finished work shall not sound hollow when tapped with a wooden mallet, shall be in true level and plain. Joints shall be straight, not too wide, too narrow etc. Tiles shall be laid as per slope indicated. Slope shall be uniform if indicated.

Rates to Include :Apart from other factors mentioned elsewhere in this contract the rate quoted for 'Ceramic tile flooring' shall include for the following : All labour, materials and equipment, Cleaning the sub-grade, laying of base course and the tile filling the joints to required finish as per above specifications. Curing Cleaning the floor from all stains etc. Mode of Measurement: The measurement shall be square metre for the actual finished flooring /skirting dado/counter etc. surface provided.

General: All other specification for laying etc. are same as per vitrified tile floor.

Wood Work and Joinery

Timber:-Unless otherwise specified, all timber for frames and shutters for doors, windows, ventilators, etc. shall be of approved quality with permissible defects for "First Grade" of timbers as per IS 1003 of latest edition. The planed surface shall be smooth and free from blemishes and discolourations. All timber for carpentry and joinery in touch with masonry or concrete shall be creosoted before fixing. All full fabricated timber shall be air seasoned at site of work for a period of not less than two months to allow for any shrinkage that may take place. The preparation of timber for joinery is to commence simultaneously with the beginning of the project work generally and should

proceed continuously until all the woodwork is prepared and fixed/stacked on or near the site as the case may be. Holdfasts: Minimum of three number of holdfasts shall be fixed to each post of the door frame. The M.S. holdfasts shall be of the size as mentioned in the Schedule of Quantities and shall be fixed to the fames by means of screws and not nails. The other end of the holdfasts shall be fixed into jambs with l: 2:4 P.C.C. of dimensions as directed. Ends of holdfasts will be fish tailed. the frames are abutting to concrete surface approved metal expansion fastener as directed shall be provided for frame, hangers, rough grounds etc. The rates quoted for wood work and joinery shall include the cost for all types or other approved fasteners. The items of holdfast, metal fasteners etc. shall be paid as a separate item as described in Schedule of Quantities. The rate for holdfast shall include for cement grouting and fixing to frame work with screws etc. The rate for metal fasteners shall include for nuts etc. as required.

Workmanship and Constructions The workmanship shall be first class and to the approval of the ENGINEER / CONSULTANT. Scantlings and board shall be accurately sawn and shall be of required width and thickness. All carpenter's work shall be wrought except where otherwise described. The workmanship and joinery shall be accurately set out in strict conformity according to the drawings and shall be framed together and securely fixed in approved manner and with properly made joints. All work is to be properly tenoned shouldered, wedged, pinned, braced etc. and properly glued with

approved quality glue to the satisfaction of the ENGINEER / CONSULTANT. Screws: Unless otherwise specified all screws to be used in woodwork and joinery shall be of Stainless Steel of approved quality. The size (diameter and length) should conform to those specified in hardware schedule. Tolerance: 15 mm (1/16") will be allowed for each wrought face of sizes specified except where described as finished in which case they shall hold to the full dimensions. Protection: All edges of timber frames etc. shall be protected from being damaged during construction by providing rough timber casing securely fixed and other adequate protective measures. If it is decided by the Engineer to provide anti termite treatment, the buildings contractor shall co-ordinate his work suitable as directed by the ENGINEER / CONSULTANT. Door/Windows frames shall have cut rebate. Planted rebates shall not be permitted. Where door frames are fixed flush with plaster to wall, teak wood cover mould40 x l2 mm as per drawings shall be provided all round and shall be painted or polish finished to match with finished shutters. This will be paid as a separate item as described in Schedule of Quantities.

Wooden Flush Shutters: (Solid Core Type): Solid core flush shutters shall be commercial or teak veneered type as specified in the item manufactured by approved manufacturer registered with ISI and shutter shall bear ISI mark. An approved sample shall be deposited in the office of the Engineer/Consultant at site for reference. The shutter will be provided with lapping. Finished thickness of the shutter shall be as mentioned in the item. Shutter should be hot pressed and phenol formaldehyde should be used as glue. FACTORY MADE PANELLED SHUTTERS: Shutters shall be manufactured from Kiln Seasoned and chemically treated commercial hardwood of approved quality. Thickness and sizes of styles, rails etc. Shall be as specified in the Schedule of Quantities and or drawings. Panel shall be of phenol bonded plywood (BWP) conforming to I.S 303 of latest edition of thickness as specified in the Schedule of Quantities. Panel shall be in a single width piece. Shutters shall be manufactured conforming to the relevant I.S. specification and an approved sample shall be kept in the site office of the Engineer/Consultant for reference.

Hardware Fittings: All hardware fittings, handle, lock/latch for doors shall be of Stainless Steel mat finished type. The hardware fittings shall be obtained from approved manufacturers and shall bear ISI mark wherever available. The samples for the fittings shall be submitted to the Engineer /Consultant for their approval. The rate for hardware fittings shall include for supplying, fitting and fixing the fittings with necessary SS screws, washers bolts, nuts etc. as required. All locks shall be provided with keys in TRIPLICATE and rate shall include for the same. Approved samples of hardware fittings shall be deposited with Engineer/Consultant for reference.

Rates to Include: Apart from other factors mentioned elsewhere in this contract the rate for item of woodwork and joinery shall include for the following:- Items of scantling: All labour, materials and equipments for fixing frame work as per drawing including the cost of holdfasts, Rawl plugs, or other fasteners etc. Items of shutters : All labour, materials and equipments for carrying out the work as per drawing. Labour for fixing the shutters in position (including the cost of fittings) as per drawing. All necessary hardware fittings like tower bolt, handle, mortice lock with key, Latch from Godrej, etc. As applicable complete operation of the door.

Mode of Measurement: All measurements shall be as per relevant section of I.S. l200 of latest edition. Scantling shall be measured in cum. The sectional area shall be the area of the least square, or rectangles from which the scantling may be cut. The length shall be actual length of timber required for the purposes including the extra portion required for jointing. Shutters shall be measured in square metre for closed door shutters area i.e. rebate to rebate without extra measurement for rebates and/or splayed meeting styles of door. Hadwares:-All hardwares shall be of Stainless Steel mat finish and shall be got approved by the Engineer/Consultant prior to procurement and fixing. Tolerance: The tolerance on the width and the height of the door shall be ± 5 mm and the tolerance on the nominal thickness of the door shall be ± 2 mm. Measurements: Length and width of the shutters shall be measured to the nearest cm in closed position covering the rebates of the frames but excluding the gap between the shutter and the frame. Area is calculated to the nearest of 0.01 sqm. Rate : The specified rate include the cost of the door shutter and labour involved in fixing of the shutter, Fittings & fixtures on the door shutter including hinges & screws, mortice lock, tower bolts, handles etc. shall also to include in the rate of door shutters.

Painting :

Scope: The work consists of Exterior and Interior Painting on all types of surface in accordance with the ‘drawings’ and Schedule of finishes or as per the guideline explained in IS-1477, is-2395 and as per direction of the Engineer/Consultant and ‘Schedule of Quantities’, It includes furnishing all materials, labour, tools and equipment and management necessary for and incidental expenses for completion of the work. The scope of work includes too The removal from the site of any defective material brought thereon by the contractor And the substitution of any other material thereof. The demolition, removal and/or re-execution of any work executed by the Contractor. The dismissal from the work of any persons employed thereupon. The opening up for inspection of any work covered up. The rectification and making good of any defects under clauses hereinafter mentioned And those arising during the defect liability period. Cement Based Painting :

Material : External waterproofing cement based paints shall be of approved Preparation of surface: Before painting is commenced on surface, all dirt, oil, grease, efflorescence and organic material shall be completely removed. The surface shall be wetted by sprinkling of water with fine spray. The surface shall be sprayed several times with a few minutes intervals between each spraying to allow the moisture to soak into the surface.

Application: Cement based paint solution shall be applied to the surface with hair brush to get uniform finish. After the first coat of paint has dried it shall be cured with water at least for 24 hours, before the application of the second coat should be elapsed between the two coats. The meaning of one coat shall be as described for whitewashing. Curing: Cement based paint work shall be kept damp at least for 7 days.

Rates to include : Apart from other factors mentioned elsewhere in this contract, the rate of providing cement paint shall include for the following :- All labour, materials and equipment to provide cement paint. Scaffolding, including erecting and removing. Preparing the surface as stated above. Applying 2 coats of approved cement based paint. If a proper and even surface is not obtained to the satisfaction of the Engineer/Consultant in the coats applied, the contractor shall provide additional coats of painting to approval, at contractor's expense. Curing as stated above. Mode of Measurement : Measurement shall be in square metre and as applicable the mode of measurement shall be as applicable to that for plaster. Nothing extra shall be allowed for painting on rough surface, for example, external sand faced plaster, rough cast plaster etc.

Painting, priming, on woodwork, Iron, Plastered Surface etc. Material : Ready mixed oil based or water based paints and primer, in general shall be of approved quality, colour and shall manufactured by ICI, Berger Paints (India) Ltd, Asian Paints Ltd. These materials shall be in sealed tins and shall be opened in the presence of the Engineer/Consultant at site. Preparation of Surface Iron and Steel works: Surface to be painted shall be thoroughly cleaned, sand papered and/or rubbed with emery cloth, if necessary, to remove grease, mortar or any other foreign materials. In case of rusted surface, it shall be first cleaned with wire brushes till the corroded rust is removed. The prepared surface shall be shiny and free from brush marks, patches, blisters and other irregularities. The surface thus finished shall be got approved for painting. Wood work: All surface to be painted shall be thoroughly cleaned sand papered and removed of all foreign materials. In case of surfaces having knot and nail holes, this shall be filled with knotting and stopping materials. The knotting materials shall consist of pure shellac dissolved in methylated spirit. Stopping materials shall consist of putty. The surface thus treated shall be allowed to dry and then sand papered smooth. Plastered Surface: The surface shall ordinarily not be painted until it has dried completely. Trial patches of primer shall be laid at intervals and where drying is satisfactory, painting shall then be taken in hand. Before primer is applied, holes and undulations, shall be filled up with plaster of paris and rubbed smooth wherever applicable.

Application: After preparing the surface, a primer coat shall be applied. The primer coat shall be ready mix of approved make and manufacturer. After the primer coat is applied and perfectly dried, all holes, cracks, etc. which shall remain, shall be filled in with putty and the surface sand papered smooth. Then a second coat of paint of approved shade and manufacturers shall be evenly applied and allowed to dry. The third coat shall be carefully applied to achieve smooth and even surface after the previous coat has dried up. Minimum 3 coats of paint shall be applied inclusive of a primer coat. If a proper and even surface is not obtained to the satisfaction of the Engineer/Consultant in 3 coats, contractor shall carry out additional coats of painting to approval, at contractor's expenses. Care shall be taken that dust or other foreign materials do not settle or otherwise disfigure the various coats. The painting shall be applied with brushes, worked well into the surface and spread even and smooth. The painting shall be done by crossing and laying off.

Rates to include: Apart from other factors mentioned elsewhere in this contract, the rate for the item of painting shall include for the following:- All labour, materials equipment necessary to carry out the work. Supplying the approved paint for priming and finishing coats. Preparing the surface including knotting and stopping for receiving the priming and finishing coats. Scaffolding /staging including its erection and dismantling. Application of at least one primer coat and two coats of finishing for woodwork and at least two finishing coats for steel work unless otherwise specified. If a proper and even surface is not obtained to the satisfaction of the Engineer/Consultant, contractor shall carryout additional coats of painting to approval at contractor's expense.
