President’s Message

Rabbi’s & President’s Messages

Friends — I am so grateful for the Temple Israel teams that meet regularly to discuss goals and help us grow our congregation. Our Education Team kicks off 2020 with a column about their work. I am grateful for their leadership! — Amy Weisbach

We Jews are fortunate. And for many reasons. One of which is that we get an opportunity to push our restart buttons not just once, but two times a year! Our entry into 5780 may feel like a distant memory, but the ringing in of 2020 is likely fresh in our minds. Perhaps you are among the 60% of Americans who declare a New Year’s resolution. Maybe your resolution aims for ‘more’ - learn something new, increase patience with your children, make more connections with others. Or maybe you’re one who will instead try to go the ‘less’ route - reduce stress in your life, spend less time on your device. These may seem like lofty aspirations, but rest assured, they are attainable. All of them. And Temple Israel can help. Just by taking advantage of the wealth of educational and meaningful experiential offerings available, you can achieve these goals and much, much more. Here’s how:

• Learn something new – easy! Attend an upcoming Scholar-in-Residence program led by our fellow congregants, join a future Adult B’nai Mitzvah class, sign up for Judaism 101 with Rabbi Sharon Mars, partake in the weekly The Book of Exodus with Rabbi Alvin Mars, and enjoy Stories of Music with Cantor Moses

• Increase patience with your children – you’ve got this! Strengthen your parenting skills with the help of Rabbi Mars and the Torah

• Reduce stress in your life – no problem! Take advantage of Urban Zen Integrative Therapy with Lori Guth Moffett

Undoubtedly, with all of the above, you are guaranteed to make more connections with others and spend less time on your device. So there. Done. We look forward to seeing you at any and all of the offerings we have available and asking you how it feels to have your New Year’s resolution accomplished. Shalom, Temple Israel Education Team Aimee Sanders, Adam Solomon (Co-chairs), Tom Anger, Debbie Cohen, Jason Crabill, Lance Croffoot-Suede, Joan Folpe, Beth Seltzer

The following is an excerpt from Rabbi Mars’s Kol Nidre Sermon. You can read her full sermon on our website, https://www.templeisrael.org/rabbis-message. One day while wandering through the wilderness, A woman stumbles upon a tiger. Aghast, she runs and runs until the tiger chases her to the very edge of a cliff. She stares down and spies a vine. Desperate to save herself, she grips the vine and lowers herself over the precipice. The tiger

above roars, and for the moment she can breathe. When suddenly, she hears another roar…there are tigers below her as well. As fear grips her chest she realizes that the vine is slowly being gnawed away by the sharp teeth of a tiny little mouse. Just when she thinks all is lost, the woman sees a beautiful bunch of ripe strawberries nestled in a nearby clump of grass jutting out from the cliff just within her reach. She looks up, she looks down, she looks at the mouse, she looks at the strawberries. She grabs a single strawberry and pops it right into her mouth. The end. This is one of my new favorite stories. This tale often gets whittled down to, “Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die!” The talmudic equivalent might be, “Repent — do teshuvah — the day before you die!” Both make the same point: when tigers (of ambition or desire or hunger) pursue you from above and below, and the little mouse of time slowly but deliberately gnaws away at the vine of our life, we had better live it up in the moment — gulp down that strawberry while we still can! Life is to be celebrated here and now, so go for it! That would be the perfect place for this sermon to end, but this is Yom Kippur. Today is very different. Most days, our tigers take the form of overflowing email inboxes and people oversharing on social media. Sometimes the tiger can be a challenging medical diagnosis or sudden job loss. In these particularly fraught and precarious times, this parable has profound resonance, especially for us members of the American Jewish family. This tiger looks eerily familiar. We know this tiger all too well. In a matter of months, Pittsburgh and Poway have become Jewish code for the “new normal.” In our own Columbus Jewish community, security briefings have become part and parcel of our weekly routine. Special funding has been conjured and collected so that we can sit here in relative safety and security to celebrate our Shabbat and holy days, and our kids can go to religious school without worry.

2020 WRJ Central Ohio Tzedakah Collective Now Forming

Have you been reading about our Tzedakah Collective, and thinking, “I could do this?” Now is the time to let us know! Plans are being made for the 2020 Tzedakah Collective. Our Central Ohio Tzedakah Collective is an ongoing

philanthropy project open to all Reform women in Central Ohio. Since 2014, this awesome group of women has donated over $10,000 to organizations whose missions embrace our collective values. Past recipients include Kaleidoscope, You Will Rise, SOS (Scholarship Opportunities for Success), the WRJ YES Fund, Girls on the Run, Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio, Freedom A La Cart, US Together, the Bike Lady, Joseph’s Coat, the Harmony Project, Growlers Dog Biscuits and Foster Action Ohio. Each member makes a minimum $60 tax-deductible donation to our collective, which we combine together to make a larger, more impactful grant. We gather bi-monthly to learn about different agencies and organizations, researched and vetted by our members. We host guest speakers, and enjoy peer learning, lively discussions, and many memorable moments with like-minded, thoughtful and engaged women. Attendance at our meetings is not a requirement of participation, and many of our members choose to participate “virtually.” New members are welcomed at any point during our calendar year. We are forming our 2020 Tzedakah Collective now! Contact Marsha Pond ([email protected], 614-468-1728) for information, meeting dates and locations. We invite you to join us!

$10,000 Granted: The 2019 WRJ Central Ohio Tzedakah Collective Our 2019 WRJ Central Ohio Tzedakah Collective’s final meeting of the year was held in December. We met in homes and synagogues throughout the year, exploring local organizations that restore human dignity. There were 40 members representing all three Central Ohio Reform synagogues, as well as several unaffiliated members. Each woman donated a minimum of $60 for the year, which was combined to make larger, more impactful grants. The organizations discussed included Joseph’s Coat (an interfaith non-profit aiding families by offering free clothing, furniture and house-hold items), Growlers Dog Biscuits (a non-profit whose goal is to provide adults with disabilities viable employment and vocational opportu-nities), Foster Action Ohio (a specialized arm of the non-profit Ohio Children’s Alliance that is dedicated to improving outcomes for current and former foster care youth), and The Harmony Project (a non-profit that connects people across social divides through the arts, educa-tion, and volunteer community service.) After a discussion and vote, the Tzedakah Collective made the following grants: • Foster Action Ohio - $1500 • Growlers Dog Biscuits - $500 • Joseph’s Coat - $500 • The Harmony Project - $500

With these newest grants, our group has now donated over $10,000 to organizations whose missions embrace our Reform Jewish values. For information on joining, contact Marsha Pond, [email protected], 614-468-1728.

In Our Congregation Planning Ahead with the Temple Israel Foundation

At some point everyone thinks about what kind of legacy they will leave behind. Does it speak to my wishes? my essence? Who will appreciate it or recognize it? For whom is it intended? Temple Israel and Temple Israel Foundation in concert with JewishColumbus LIFE & LEGACY Program is thinking about those very questions and how they impact you, Temple Israel and the entire Jewish community. What is LIFE & LEGACY? LIFE & Legacy is a national program in which Columbus was selected among several cities to participate. It is an opportunity for you to consider making a legacy commitment – through a gift in your will, trust, retirement account or life insurance policy – to the Temple. Your commitment to the Jewish community will be recognized, and your desire to make a difference by giving back will serve as motivation to others who admire the values you’ve put in place. LIFE & LEGACY is the brainchild of Harold Grinspoon and is supported by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation which invests in projects that provide a strong return on investment to the Jewish community. Temple Israel has long been a strong partner of JewishColumbus and an organization that is always ready to collaborate. As we embark on the next four years with the LIFE & LEGACY Program, Temple Israel will be an active participant in this program, and congregants will be educated and asked to participate . This program, with your help, has the power to have a transformative impact on our synagogue and our community. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Sincerely,

Bob Keidan, Elaine Tenenbaum Foundation President Foundation Executive Director

Senior Group Enjoys Annual Concert Temple Israel’s Senior Group enjoyed its annual concert with Cantor Moses in December. Held just before Chanukah, the event featured Cantor Moses singing some of her Broadway favorites as well as some liturgical pieces and a few Chanukah songs. Tony Hagood accompanied on keyboard. Between songs, Cantor told little stories about her personal journey through her musical career and how she was led to become a cantor. At the end of the concert, the group participated in a sing along of Chanukah songs.

No Goodbye is Final When I first began working at Temple Israel, Rabbi Emily Rosenzweig said to me, “Everyone here is like family. We have each other’s backs. We help each other out.” That statement has stayed with me for 11 years, and to this day it rings true. Temple Israel has become a family to me, and over the past 11 years, I have had the pleasure of serving its members. My role as Religious School Assistant and Communications Coordinator has allowed me to get to know and work with so many of you and your families. Thank you to the amazing staff that I have had the privilege of working with during my years at Temple Israel: Jennah Scher, Ruth Silverman, Zachary Looper-Friedman, Beata Abraham, Rabbi Sharon Mars, Cantor Bat-Ami Moses. Thank you for your support, guidance, leadership, humor, friendship, and love. Thank you to Elaine Tenenbaum and Rabbi Misha Zinkow for your mentorship when I began working at Temple. In Ben Greenberg’s article The Jewish Way In Saying Goodbye he writes, “When we turn to the traditional statement uttered by Jews upon completion of study of a sacred text, and we ritualize a form of goodbye to that text, we recite Hadran Alach, we will return to you. A goodbye is never final in our lifelong engagement with Torah.” I will miss everyone at Temple Israel. While I am completing the end of my journey here, my goodbye is not final. The experiences shared with you and the lessons I have learned will remain with me throughout my life, as I hope they will with you as well. Hadran Alach, Bethany Fitzgerald
