In what kind of world do you want to live? That is, to me, the most fundamental question the Jewish people have asked since Abraham first left his home in Ur of the Chaldees. It is the question that rises out of the choices made in each generation as we think about what we want the impact of our lives to be.

In every age, there are those who are inspired by Torah and the wisdom of our tradition. They look out at the world, and imagine a different future. And instead of lamenting the fact that things are not how they ought to be, they gather together their resources and resolve to be the agents of the change they want to see.

In 1967, a group of such visionaries decided to create a synagogue in Boca Raton. Ten years later, other visionaries built our original campus — our sanctuary, our social hall, our original classrooms and offices.

More recently, our

congregation imagined a western campus that would be a state of the art center for education and learning for infants, children, young adults, and indeed our entire congregation. Thanks to the extraordinary vision of the Beck Family, an extraordinarily dedicated anonymous donor, and hundreds of other individuals

and families, we not only have the most advanced center for Jewish education in our area, but we also created a redesigned atrium, a new member lounge, and major technical improvements to our sanctuary.

Through the vision of a broad range of our congregation’s members and leaders, we are now implementing our congregation’s strategic plan that will continue to make us the most compelling center of Jewish life we possibly can be. Many significant changes are being implemented in our congregation’s programming,

governance, and physical resources.

I cannot begin to express my appreciation for the visionary leadership demonstrated by the Schaefer family. Bonnie and Jamie Schaefer, and Marla Schaefer and her husband Steve Weishoff, have embraced the mission of Temple Beth El as their own personal mission, and through their extraordinary generosity, have committed $5 million to Temple Beth El. The Schaefer’s commitment represents the largest charitable gift in our congregation’s history, and to acknowledge their generous investment in Temple Beth El’s future, our main campus will now be known as the Schaefer Family Campus. I am so grateful that their leadership has inspired many

based on the schaefer family gift as well as several additional substantial commitments, we are in the process of determining the scope of the capital and endowment campaign and the resulting priorities. by fall 2014, we will announce our plans to the congregation and seek your involvement in this important undertaking. the future of the jewish community of boca raton will be largely influenced by what we accomplish.

The Schaefer’s gift represents the largest charitable donation in our congregation’s

history, and to acknowledge their generous investment in Temple Beth El’s future, our main campus will now be known as the

a message from patty beck

The Board of Trustees has afforded Rabbi Levin the opportunity to pursue two periods of sabbatical time; one which he will take this summer after leading the Temple trip to Israel in June, and a second he will take within the next two years. During the period of his sabbatical, Rabbi Brockman and Rabbi Weisman will cover the rabbinic responsibilities for the congregation.

As our senior rabbi, Temple Beth El relies on Rabbi Levin to play a wide variety of roles that are vital to our congregation. He is called upon to lead worship services and provide support through important life-cycle moments. In addition, Rabbi Levin helps guide the congregation’s programming and direction, teaches a variety of different courses, and helps members of our congregation through moments of individual growth through pastoral care and counseling. All this in addition to his

administrative responsibilities makes his plate very full.

As important as all of these roles are, Rabbi Levin and our clergy team are our primary source of Jewish wisdom and understanding. We want our senior rabbi to be steeped in Jewish text and tradition, and to have new and accessible wisdom to share with us in all of the ways we learn from him. It is nearly impossible for Rabbi Levin to have the time to devote to study, learning, and the intellectual and spiritual pursuits necessary for him to be the leader we need and want him to be. That is why we feel that the time away from the daily pressures of Temple life will afford him the opportunity to attend to these critical areas of rabbinic growth.

We wish Rabbi Levin a successful and meaningful sabbatical, and look forward to learning and growing with him when he returns in September.

Chez Gourmet has been Temple Beth El’s exclusive caterer since May 2010. Over the last four years, Chez Gourmet has continued to cater off-premise events while also serving the Temple’s needs. Jack and Sheri Jacobs, the owners of Chez Gourmet, recently decided to focus their business on off-premise events and return to their catering roots serving the broader community. As a result, Chez Gourmet will no longer be our exclusive caterer beginning January 1, 2015. If you have an event planned at the Temple with Chez Gourmet prior to January 1, 2015, you have nothing to worry about. Your event will go on as planned and Chez Gourmet is committed to providing you a first class event, as they always do. If you are considering having a catered event at the Temple after January 1, 2015, please contact me. We have made arrangements with multiple caterers to handle

any events that may arise as we transition into a new catering arrangement for the Temple.

A task force has been formed to select a new caterer (or caterers). In response to your feedback, we are investigating a new structure where congregants could choose from a list of approved caterers rather than a single exclusive caterer. This system has its pros and cons and the task force is carefully weighing both options.

Additionally, we must renovate the Social Hall in order to attract more catered events and generate higher facility rental revenue for the Temple. To that end, the Facilities and Technology Committee recently approved the expenditure of the funds necessary to undertake a Social Hall redecoration this summer.

Should you have any questions, comments or suggestions please feel free to contact me as we always welcome your feedback.

The sold-out Beth El Bash was an epic evening of fun AND fundraising for Temple Beth El. The March 8th event was held at the Schaefer Family Campus campus which was completely transformed into an elegant atmosphere. The crowd of over 260 people of all ages enjoyed international cuisine, dancing, an amazing magician, and capturing memories in a festive photo booth. The impressive silent auction featured over one hundred auction items, including Miami Heat tickets, restaurant packages, and a stay at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. “It was an evening that will go down in the history of Temple Beth El.” says Co-Chair

Jennifer Shapiro. “Together, not only did we come together as a congregation for a fantastic night of fun and entertainment, but we raised funds that are so needed for our scholarship and financial aid programs.” Co-Chair Cheryl Runsdorf adds “We are very proud to announce that the Beth El Bash raised $60,000 for our scholarship and financial aid programs.” Together we will now be able to continue to welcome all families and children that want to be part of our Temple Beth El family. We want to thank each and everyone who served on the Committee, sponsored the Bash, donated an auction item, and attended. It was truly a team effort!

You may have never met them, but they are about to have a major impact on Temple Beth El. Two sisters, Marla and Bonnie Schaefer, and their families have shaken things up with a most generous gift.

They, and their parents Sylvia and Rowland Schaefer, became friends of Temple Beth El years ago when the family first became acquainted with Rabbi Merle Singer. The family was deeply touched by their participation in the Torah Project during which they dedicated the book of Deuteronomy, and from that moment on became very committed to helping Temple Beth El further.

That was just the beginning. What a story these two sisters have to tell.

Marla Schaefer’s bright blue eyes shine with the happy memories of being a little girl at Chanukah, and her father bursting through the door, laden down with outrageous gifts.

“I thought my father was Walt Disney. First of all he was very handsome and so exciting to be around. He had a terrific zest for life and sense of fun. He came home one time with a huge carton full of puppies. An entire litter of boxers.”

This larger than life man was Rowland Schaefer, a self-made man and the creator of the chain of 3,000 Claire’s

Stores, which became so popular with fashionable tweens and teens.

Rowland Schaefer was born in Chicago in 1916, and grew up in a hurry, contributing to the family income from the age of seven by shoveling coal for $1.00 a week. Hard circumstances forced him to quit school early so that he could work to support his mother and brother. “He came from nothing. It was a very difficult life for them but my father was a natural entrepreneur, and incredibly hard working,” says daughter Bonnie. “He went from vacuums and vending machines to hats and wigs and became the largest manufacturer of wigs in the world.”

Rowland was married to his beloved Sylvia, a glamorous beauty with a brain for business. They moved from Chicago to Hollywood, Florida, and raised five children, two of whom, Marla and Bonnie, became co-CE0s of Claire’s after their father fell ill in 2002.

“My mother was his greatest cheerleader,” says Marla. “The wig business was her suggestion. He said to her: what do I know about wigs? Her answer was: what did you know about any of your businesses before you started them?”

Rowland’s determination and talent resulted in

a success that the family generously shared. Their philanthropic support remains wide reaching, providing significant gifts to a long list of causes and organizations including funding for diabetes research at the University of Miami, solar energy research in Rehovot, Israel, and the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Museum of Tolerance, now under construction in Jerusalem.

“My father stood for justice,” says Bonnie. “He fought for tolerance and acceptance and was a great defender of human rights. He was also very passionate about Israel; a true Zionist.”

Sadly, both parents passed away last May. They had been married for 65 years. Rabbi Dan Levin officiated at both services, two days apart, and as each was laid to rest at the Beth El Mausoleum. “The Schaefer family is incredibly inspiring. From one generation to the next, they carry an extraordinary commitment to the tradition of giving. They see a need and they respond. Bonnie had told me that it started with her grandmother, Rowland’s mother Pearl, who, though she had little means, always told Rowland to give to the needy. It is the purest form of Tikkun Olam and we are blessed to have the vision and leadership of the Schaefer family in our community.”

Today the Schaefer family legacy of giving is led by the current generation through private gifts as well as charitable giving from the Rowland and Sylvia Schaefer Family Foundation. In keeping with their parents’ wishes, the family ensures that at least 50 percent of

the foundation gifts go to Jewish causes. Marla and her husband Steve Weishoff are keenly interested in education and science. Bonnie and her wife Jamie Schaefer are prominent supporters of the arts and women’s issues. They, along with Marla, recently returned from a trip to India with Gloria Steinem on a mission to help fight sex trafficking.

Bonnie and Jamie also led the capital campaign to build The Temple of the High Country/Schaefer Jewish Community Center, the first synagogue in Boone, North Carolina. Marla and Steve embraced this project as well, and added the Danielle and Nicole Weishoff Hillel to the center. “This really started with Jamie,” Bonnie explains. “Judaism is very important to her. It was while attending a Bar Mitzvah in the Catholic church we used for services that she looked at me and said, ‘this isn’t right. We need to build a synagogue.’ So we did. It was a lot of work and involved many people. Rabbi Levin came to North Carolina to help us reach out to the community and raise money and together we built this wonderful synagogue and hired a rabbi. Where there once had been hundreds of people sitting in the Catholic

n maimonides institu te for jewish learning

A story is told of a rabbi who, when sitting in his house, saw his son walking out of the house and into the woods. Hiking in the woods was not a normal behavior for his son so the rabbi was curious but wanted to respect his son’s privacy so he didn’t ask about it. Over the next couple days he kept watching his son leave the house, walk into the woods, and come back about an hour later. Finally he couldn’t contain his curiosity, “son why do you keep going into the woods every day?” The son responded that he was going into the woods to pray. “That’s fantastic!” exclaimed the rabbi, “I couldn’t be happier that you are finding time to talk to God! But, the rabbi explained, “God is the same everywhere. You don’t have to go all the way into the woods to pray.” His son responded, “I know that God is the same everywhere father. But I am not.”

Where we are matters. It changes how we feel and the experience we are trying to have.

Some places bring us together and others allow us to contemplate on our own. Some are comfortable and others push us to try new things. At Temple Beth El we know this all too well as we are blessed with two campuses: the Beck Family Campus and the Schaefer Family Campus. While having two campuses for our community certainly comes with challenges it also comes with great rewards. We have the opportunity to reach more families and to explore the use of two different types of space.

But we always have to remember that we are one community and the Religious School’s recent accreditation made that a priority. To that end the Religious School has cross-campus programming where we bring whole grades, from both campuses, together several times during the year to connect as one Temple Beth El community. We also know that the Temple Beth El community doesn’t need to be within the property lines of either of our two locations! Our 7th grade program as well as our youth engagement programming brings Temple Beth El to locations all around Boca Raton, the state and even the country!

Temple Beth El is about so much more than a building or a campus. We are about the relationships formed between our students and families. And we are working hard to create those bonds wherever Beth El congregates. From the Schaefer Family Campus to the Beck Family Campus to members’ homes to programming in Dunkin’ Donuts or a bowling alley, Beth El exists where the members are.

gavin hirsch and robin eisenberg receive the 5th nate accreditation from marlene myerson, nate accreditation chair.

WHAT’S IN A location?

While having two campuses for our community certainly comes with challenges it also comes with great rewards. We have the opportunity

to reach more families and to explore the use of two different types of space.

taking off!BY JUDY LEVINE

The shining stars pre-k class recently returned from an exciting adventure in space! We began by dividing our

dramatic play area into two sections. One became command central and the other side was transformed into outer space. The children then decided what they would like to see in space. What resulted was an ever changing and evolving area that incorporated many different art mediums, like our

paper mache planets and glow in the dark moon rocks. The class also wrote stories about their space adventures and favorite planets. By the end of our month in space

the children not only had a good basic knowledge of our universe and beyond but a real feeling of pride and accomplishment in what they had created.

n sisterhood update

n brotherhood updateOur Brotherhood organization exists in a paradox. We plan and hold events to raise funds we then give away. Some in our group are concerned about the great effort involved in creating events. Others embrace the challenge. Some hesitate to part with funds earned through their hard work. Still others seek to exhaust finances without examining consequences. These contradictions dissolve when we focus on the true value of Brotherhood as expressed in our mission: we are a men’s service organization that exists to support our synagogue community. We donate our time and funds joyfully to dozens of Beth El programs that make a difference in the lives of our

congregation. On behalf of our Brotherhood board, I wish you the opportunity to experience the same degree of satisfaction and contentment as your circumstances dictate. Enjoy your summer! Register at tbeboca.org/brotherhood for

We are beyond thrilled at the fabulous response we had to our Chocolate Seder which dealt with the important issue of modern day slavery. We had over 250 ladies in attendance at this sold out event, and I think we were all personally touched by the compelling words of our speaker, Katariina Rosenblatt, a trafficking survivor, when she shared her harrowing experiences with us. I also think this event has made us all much more aware of how we can make a difference with this issue using the power of our purchases. We partnered with Temple Beth El Social Action for this special evening and I wish to thank Wendy Walin, Joan Weidenfeld and Rabbi Jessica Spitalnic Brockman for their brilliant planning and leadership of this hugely successful event.

I would also like to thank Michelle Wolff for chairing our Lord & Taylor Beauty Event

held on March 26th. There were 48 women in attendance and we were treated like royalty with wine and hors d’oeuvres served butler style. We learned about fabulous fashion pairings, and make up tips and we left with goody bags and discount cards. What more can a gal ask for?!? Thank You Lord & Taylor!

Please R.S.v. P. for our Networking Event on May 5th at 7pm at Burt & Max’s in Delray Marketplace. Be sure to come equipped with business cards so we can all do business with our Sisters! Register at tbeboca.org/sisterhood

We are already planning our wonderful events for next year, however, it will be difficult to top this year! We have had such wonderful turn outs and feedback on every one of our events and it makes me appreciate what a pleasure it is to be a part of this wonderful group of ladies here at Temple Beth El!

church for high holidays with a sheet draped over the cross, now we have a synagogue of our own.”

The two sisters and their spouses are very close and have chosen to establish their primary homes in Florida. In part, it is because they grew up here, but it is also because Temple Beth El is here.

“We think the world of Rabbi Levin,” Marla says. “He is our rabbi. Temple Beth El is home to us.”

Jamie Schaefer is the friend everyone would love to have. She has an easy smile and infectious enthusiasm. Her love of Judaism is plain to see as she works her way through studies for her upcoming Bat Mitzvah, yet she is quick to point out that her sister-in-law Marla is the real “shul sitter” in the family, attending services every Friday.

Marla beams at the comment, “Jamie and Bonnie felt strongly about having the Schaefer Family Foundation provide this gift to Temple Beth El and I agreed.”

Bonnie Schaefer smiles widely. “In the spirit of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world begins at home. Temple Beth El is our spiritual home and we love it here. We see the value in updating the synagogue. Now we are hoping other people will step up to help.”

others to join their efforts and our work is just beginning.

The synagogue is the factory for tomorrow’s world. Within our walls, in moments of worship, learning, and through acts of service and social-justice, we build the spiritual core of our world for today and for the future. The texts and traditions of our people teach us how to make a moral choice in a complex world, and how we must act on those commanding choices, in order that we might build a society that, as the prophet Isaiah said, is “light to the nations.”

For us as a community, it is always what we do within our walls that is far more important than the walls themselves. We hope that in whatever way is meaningful for you and your family, together we will build not simply the synagogue of the future, but the world of our dreams.
