President’s MessageAs you read this column, the Journal Gala

committee will be working on the finalpreparations for what is sure to be a fantastic evening. We decided to experi-ment this year and do things a little differ-ently. We are having the event earlier in theyear so that we do not interfere with otherprograms like our second annual Golf and

Tennis Day in early June. That was such a great time lastyear for everyone, including those that only joined us fordinner, that we have decided to run it again. We alsochanged the Journal event from a Sunday brunch to aSaturday evening dance. We hope that it will be anotherfun evening for the entire Temple family to relax and havea good time. As both president and an honoree, I want tothank Jack Gingold, Bruce Rabinowitz and their entirecommittee for all of their hard work and dedication. The journal celebration has often only honored theoutgoing president but this year we added a second honoree. In choosing Steve Miller, we picked someonewho has tirelessly worked for what is best about AmEchad. In championing the Feed the Hungry program,Steve has attracted a wide array of congregants to partici-pate in serving the larger needs of our community. I amproud to share this evening with him. Most of you may not realize this but there is also athird honoree which is Temple Am Echad itself. By sup-porting the journal, you are not only recognizing whatSteve and I have done but also all of the wonderful thingsabout Am Echad. If you have not done so already, pleaserespond that you will be joining us at the event. If yourschedule does not permit or if the travel is too much for thesnowbirds, please consider other ways that you can supportthe event. I hope to see a full ballroom. There are many other events that will be taking placein the coming months. Our annual film series, the musicalShabbats and Second Seder are just a few. These are allevents that are open to the larger community so pleaseinvite family and friends. Of course, our Torah Restorationproject is also continuing in all of its forms. Many of ushave already had the opportunity to learn with our scribe. There will be additional opportunities to explore the Torahand its meaning to the Jewish people, Am Echad and toeach of us individually. Look for additional information onall of these programs. Finally, let me thank all of you who dedicate time toparticipate in meetings, come to events, bring your chil-dren to our school or join us for services. It is because ofall of you that Am Echad will continue to grow.

Cantor’s CornerSo if you were wondering, I managed

to make it through my new grandsonMax’s bris without fainting. All went welland since his birth on December 2, Maxhas gained three pounds and grown from18½ to 21½ inches!

I wanted to take a few moments toreflect on an article I recently read fromthe Washington Post by Lisa Miller. The

headline read “Young Jews Rebelling Against PayingDues.” It focused on the fact that many young people areunwilling to deal with the dues-paying model of synagoguemembership. Obviously, this is not a new issue. Numerous articleshave appeared over the last several years in Reform JudaismMagazine (among many other publications) about duesalternatives and related matters. I’m not so foolish as to getstuck in that “quicksand” in this short missive. However, itmight be wise to look at and mull over the last few remarksin the article as we go forward into a new year. One Reform synagogue president quoted in the articlesays that he divides the synagogue’s budget by the numberof families in the congregation and presents them with anumber. He tells them what it costs to run the institution, and then says they should give what they can, making sureto give their time and effort as well. He indicated that theannual giving is “not worse, slightly better” than before thechange. This synagogue president describes the reactions ofhis fellow presidents thus: “Oh boy, I’m glad that works foryou, but I would never try it. Too scary.” The article’s author, Lisa Miller, then concludes withthe following: “What should be scarier, from the Jewishestablishment’s point of view, is the number of people per-fectly content to walk away.” How many people do youknow who are unaffiliated? I’m sure your answer to thatquestion is the same as mine…many. We all know that times are tough and money is tight. We also know that there are many causes, obligations, interests and problems that compete not only for our dollarsbut also for our attention, commitment and devotion. It’simportant for synagogue communities to survive, despitefinancial pressures and societal changes. It’s important foreach of us to reach out to those we know who are not syna-gogue members and tell them all the reasons why it’s greatto be a part of any temple community. Each of us is poten-tially the best advertisement for this Temple community butwe each have to be proactive! Tell your friends and neigh-bors all of the wonderful things that happen here. Share thejoy, camaraderie, support, fellowship, and the yiddishkeitthat are temple life. I love being a part of this community, solet’s all spread the word and spread the wealth. I look for-ward to singing with you soon. With affection,

~ Cantor Jerry Korobow

Did you know that • In Israel, Jewish women still do not have equal rights? • In Israel, there still is no gender equality? • In Israel, there is still no Religious Equality? • In Israel, there IS a way we American Jews can help cre-ate a pathway to PEACE? All it takes is for every member of Temple Am Echadover the age of 18 to VOTE in the upcoming ARZA WorldZionist Congress Elections. Your vote will assure thatARZA’s delegates to the World Zionist Congress representthe values of American Reform Judaism. These elections are the most effective way for USReform Jews to promote and encourage the kind of Jewishstate we all know is possible - a Jewish state that holds trueto the ideals of religious pluralism, the growth of ReformJudaism in Israel, women’s equality in all areas of life, democracy, and a solution to the ongoing conflict. We need every one of our congregants over the ageof 18 to VOTE. It’s easy, and it’s fast. Please read theURJ-provided information below. From Jan 13, 2015 until April 30, 2015, you have theopportunity to vote for the ARZA-Representing ReformJudaism slate, assuring that ARZA’s delegates represent ourprogressive values in the United States’ delegation to theWorld Zionist Congress. Voting is easy and can be complet-ed online or by paper ballot. All Jews over the age of 18(as of June 30, 2015) can vote. One need not be a memberof any other organization or Jewish institution in order tovote. You can help shape Israel’s future by:

FinanceThese are some very exciting

times for Reform Judaism. Our very ownDavid Saperstein recently was confirmedand assumed the position of the U. S.Ambassador for International ReligiousFreedom. In doing so, he left his long-time position as the head of the ReligiousAction Center. But not to fear, Rabbi

Jonah Pesner will now be leading the RAC. Rabbi Pesnerwas recently named one of America’s most influential rabbis by Newsweek. He is also a Senior VP at the URJ incharge of Youth Engagement and a proud NFTY and CampEisner alum! We should all be very proud of the leadershipwe have both within and outside of the Reform movement. Leaders like Rabbi Saperstein and Rabbi Pesner arenot born overnight. They grow and develop in an environ-ment that embraces Jewish values and instills the impor-tance of standing up for yourself and for our people. Theygrow up in places like Am Echad. We all have an opportu-nity and a responsibility to cultivate the future leaders ofthe Reform movement and the future leaders of America. And we can do that right here – by continuing to investtime and money in our religious school and our youth pro-gramming; by having a presence here as parents of thosefuture leaders; by leading by example and demonstratingto our children why synagogue life is important. If youinvest in Am Echad, your children will see that and cometo share that value. And don’t get me wrong; I am not justtalking about investing money, although that is important.I am talking about investing your time – volunteering, attending services and programs, creating programmingthat interests you and your peers. The old adage is true:children will do as they see you doing. Future leaders also grow in places like our URJcamps. Whether your child loves sports, arts, science andtechnology or just wants to enjoy a summer of makingfriends, swimming and being with other Jewish youth, theURJ camps have something to offer everyone. And ourchild can experience all of it in an environment that, likeour synagogue, embraces Jewish values and instills theimportance of standing up for yourself and our people. Wewant to make that easier for you. Last year, Am Echad pro-vided scholarships to 10 youths who attended URJ campsand a “NFTY in Israel” program, and we will do so againthis year to anyone attending a URJ summer program. Now is the time to start thinking about sleepaway camp.We will be having a representative from the URJ camps atTemple to speak to parents and children in February. Mostof the camps fill up before the end of March. If you areinterested and/or curious, feel free to email me [email protected]. And yes, in full disclosure, I am anEisner alum and an Eisner parent! Speaking of leaders, we will be honoring two Am

Echad leaders at our upcoming Journal Dinner Dance onSaturday night, February 28 at the Lawrence CountryClub. Alan Paskoff, our outgoing president, has been aleader at Am Echad for much longer than his two-yearpresidency. He started many years ago as president ofTELY, the Temple Emanu-El Youth Group. Over the yearshe has held numerous leadership roles in Temple life, including as a teacher in our religious school. Steve Millerhas been, and continues to be, a leader in the fight againsthunger, coordinating the Feed the Hungry program sinceits inception at Temple Sinai. Please join us for what willsurely be a fun-filled evening complete with open bar, cocktail hour, four course dinner, DJ and dancing, and aViennese table! Contact the office for ticket and journal adinformation. B’Shalom, ~ Lisa Burch

After reading about what’s beengoing on in the world lately, anti-Semitism, killings at satirical newspapersand murders in kosher grocery stores,I’ve been thinking about how importantit is to be a member of a synagogue. There are so many unaffiliated Jewsin the area, all proclaiming they areproud to be Jewish and I’m sure they are. But in my mind,an important way to show your Jewish pride and support isto become a member of a synagogue. It shows community, that you stand for something with someone. Joining andretaining membership with a synagogue supports the sur-vival of Jews everywhere. Together there is so much wecan do, from feeding the hungry and helping the homelessto lobbying in Washington. Even if you don’t actively par-ticipate, which we hope you do, your membership showsthe world we are strong, we stand together….Je suis Juif!

Early Childhood Center In the Early Childhood Center, we make everyeffort to incorporate all of the wonderful Jewish holi-days, including the stories, traditions, music, craftprojects and, of course, food. Our classes will have a particularly wonderfultime celebrating Tu B’Shevat, the holiday of trees, inFebruary. The Jewish Arbor Day marks the “New Yearof Trees.” This is the season in which the earliestblooming trees in Israel emerge from their wintersleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. In many ofour classes, the children will create projects of beautiful flowering trees and speak about the manythings that trees give us. Highlighting the things treesprovide will be informative and fun. The culminationof the celebrations will be the opportunity to tastemany of the fruits that we get from trees. February is a short month but a big month for spe-cial birthdays in Mrs. Navasaitis/Mrs. Bolnick/Mrs.Romanelli’s class. They will celebrate birthdays forPresident Washington and President Lincoln alongwith the birthday of the tree, Tu B’Shevat. After read-ing the story “Sammy Spider’s First Tu B’Shevat,” theclass will sing an echo song for the holiday, make tree-shaped birthday hats and share fruits that grow ontrees for snack at their party for Tu B’Shevat. In preparation, Mrs. Navasaitis asked the children to explain what they know about trees. Theseare their answers: Harry C. - I shake the leaves off thetree if they are not falling down; Ben - Trees give meapples to eat; Hailey - I help water the trees; Shelli - Igo in the tree’s shade; Noah - I pick apples off my tree;Kristana - In the fall, the leaves fall off; Harry A. - Ifeed the trees soil; Jamie - I decorate it and make it aChristmas tree; Raquelle - In the winter, the tree hasno leaves; Zachary - Squirrels live in trees and savenuts; Roxy - Trees give me bananas; Brianna - I willfind a snowflake and put it on the tree to make it beau-tiful; Logan - Trees fall down and get smaller;Brandon - We make furniture from it; Jake - Applesgrow on trees, my favorite fruit. After a dreary winter, we will be thrilled to see thecrocuses beginning to sprout, our first sign of spring.Hopefully, March will fly by. Activities for the chil-dren will revolve around the celebration of Dr. Seuss’birthday, the season of spring and the holiday ofPurim. The children will learn about March coming inlike a lion but going out like a lamb, bears coming outof hibernation, birds returning north from their warm

weather retreats and the anticipation of beautiful flowers blooming. Purim will truly be the highlight of the month. The children will be busy preparing their ShalachManot baskets, baking hamentashen and listening tostories about Queen Esther, Mordecai and Haman. The three and four-year-olds will perform songstelling of the Purim story for their families wearingcostumes created out of pillowcases! By March, the fall and summer registration willbe well underway. Please contact us if you have anyquestions regarding registration. Happy Spring to all!~ Sue Chaplick & Barbara Goodman, ECC Directors

As a teacher, I’ve quickly learned thatthere is no such thing as downtime ineducation. It has taken me some lookingback to when I was once a member ofthe youth group to realize that I was inthe same situation - there is always

something going on. January started back after vacation and alreadywe had four members, Alexis Jackson, Matt Panzer,Evan Panzer, and CJ Pritzker, who representedONESY at the Winter Kallah - a great experience forstudents to meet other Jewish teens in the New Yorkarea and participate in programs for a weekend. Our teens recently created some new drawings onthe wall of the youth lounge to give it a new look, utilizing our new “blackboard wall” that was installedduring the renovation of the lounge. Students arebeginning to prepare for our Purim event (mark yourcalendars - March 1) and gearing up for the NFTYnational convention a few weeks away. Unlike most year-round organizations, ONESY isopen to new members and event participants any timeof the year. Continue to watch eblasts for more info, email us at [email protected], orfollow us on Twitter @ONESY_LI. We are open toanyone in grades 8-12.

In 2015, the months of February andMarch bring along two holidays adored bychildren. Be sure to join in our Hebrew andReligious School celebrations for both TuB’Shevat and Purim!

As a people, the holiday of Tu B’Shevatallows for us to reflect on environmental

aspects of living, especially the importance of tree plantingin Israel. Without all of the trees so generously planted bydiaspora Jews over the years, Israel might still be a swamp-land instead of an environmentally thriving region. Thisyear, our Hebrew and Religious school students, teachersand families will be participating in a Tu B’Shevat Sederand planting event on Sunday morning, February 1.Teaming up with the Jewish National Fund, we will bejoined by one of JNF’s education leaders to help us gain acloser look by participating in an environment and Israelthemed workshop! Students will be given Tree Plantingenvelopes and are encouraged to participate. Please havestudents submit their tree order to the office by March 1.This is a great way to instill both a love for Israel and theenvironment. On Friday evening, February 6, students in ourHebrew and Religious school will be participating in aspecial Shabbat service both featuring and honoring ourstudents. Students and madrichim will be honored andcalled to the bimah for their role in hunger awareness, donating food, tzedahkah and sorting thousands of poundsof food donations for pick up to help those in need in ourarea. Be sure to be in attendance as these children andteens are recognized! March brings us to the holiday of Purim. Childrenwait all year to dress up as their favorite character! In addi-tion to dressing in costume for our Purim Carnival, all students should dress in costume for our Friday, March 6Shabbat Service featuring our Hebrew and ReligiousSchool students. Parents are also encouraged to come incostume! On a serious note, the holiday Purim focuses onthe heroism of an unlikely parentless girl named Esther (orHadassah). Figures like Esther and Mordechai truly repre-sent the characteristics of good role models. It is importantfor children to recognize the bravery of Esther andMordechai, and to apply the message of being true to one’sidentity. Esther’s actions not only saved herself and herbrother, but spared all Jews deemed to be destroyed by thethree-cornered hat wearing Haman. I look forward to celebrating with you on TuB’Shevat, Purim and Shabbat!

Tu B’Shevat and PurimLong before Earth Day and the movement to protect the environment, Judaism showed its concern for nature

by establishing a New Year’s Day for trees. Trees, just like human beings, are also judged by God. On the fif-teenth day of Shevat, Jews observe this Day of Judgment by planting trees.

Purim, the holiday named after a lottery, commemorates the victory of the righteous over thewicked. It teaches Jews that miracles can happen. Yet the Megillah, which tells the whole story, is differentfrom any other book in the Bible because God’s name doesn’t appear in it even once. The story shows thateven when God isn’t visible, He “pulls the strings” behind the scenes to make coincidences bring about Hiswill. Throughout history there have been many Purims celebrated by people who had their own special sto-ries of “behind-the-scenes miracles.”

As I write this bulletin article, Irealize that this is perhaps one of thelast I will submit as President of theSisterhood of Temple Am Echad! Thatis a sobering thought. At the time Ibegan, it seemed like I had a long timeto serve but, looking back, I am aston-ished at how the time has flown.

When we view simchas and changes for our membersin their lives, I am reminded that life is so precious to usand we MUST remember to take the time to reflect, restand regroup so that we are giving the best we can whileenjoying what we are doing for ourselves and others. The months ahead are filled with many varied anddivergent activities and opportunities to get involved. Youdo not have to sit on the Sisterhood Board to help, suggestand contribute to the programs we have planned and we areconsistently looking for “ new” involvement to revitalizeour programs. February brings a Board meeting on the 2nd and thenTrash to Treasures on the 8th and 9th. This is one of theopportunities I’ve discussed. Together we can help SandyMarinbach and her committee if we come early that morn-ing and help set up the sale. Then more help is needed tokeep the merchandise looking “saleable” during the after-noon and assisting where necessary. Trash to Treasures isalways an eagerly anticipated event in the Lynbrook com-munity, distributing some much-needed objects to ourcommunity. On February 23, we will have a fun “dessertand program” evening planned by our Program Vice-President Susan Stein and chaired by Susan Hoffman. These evenings are always ones that help us stay connect-ed to one another and I urge you to put this date on yourcalendar. More details will follow in the weekly e-blasts. March is equally as busy for Sisterhood. We are plan-ning a book review for March 16; see the ad on page 4 withthe details so you have ample time to read the book. OurMarch Board meeting is the 23rd followed closely by awonderful and fun Game Night that is being planned byCarole Schrager and Marilyn Morganlander. Look for theinformation about it soon. Then we end March with a spe-cial event. We will be hosting a Shabbaton on the weekendof March 27-28. We are very excited because the immedi-ate past president of the WRJ Northeast District, RobinSobel, will be our guest and will facilitate a spiritual, enlightening and educational series of workshops, all cul-minating on Saturday evening with a Havdalah service anddinner. It is an honor for us to host such an important eventand I know it will be well attended and enjoyed. So does this look like we are busy? You know we are!In addition, we will be selling Passover candy, selling our
