Rabbi's Message On Rosh Hashanah as we met in the
parking lot, entering the Temple doors, in the Sanctuary, before and after services, we wished each other a Shanah Tovah, good year.
Did we in the parking lot, as we entered the Temple doors, in the
Sanctuary before and after services, counsel one another on how to cope in the year ahead? How to cope with your marriage; how to cope with your divorce; how to cope with your children, your car, or your clients; how to cope with your parents or the process of college applications, or with peers; how to cope with work, how to cope with retirement? Did we offer advice on how to achieve FUL-FILL-MENT?
No, we said merely Shanah Tovah. We were wishing each other joy and happiness, love and encouragement. On Rosh Hashanah we prayed and sang: AVINU MALKENU HADESH ALENU SHANAH TOVAH- "Our Father, our King, Mothering presence, grant to us a year of happiness." - "Renew our days, Shanah Tovah - fill us with joy. "
Joy? Yes, even the skeptical writer of the Book of Ecclesiastes - Kohellet - who is remembered for the line "vanity of vanity all is vanity." - even this writer, Kohellet, knew. that joy was possible, and taught his students how to achieve it - even if it is, by nature, fleeting.
Joy is not just the " all-right" of a college beer blast, nor only tender consuming love, nor alone the splendor of a sun-high summer day with birdsong and blossom scent as you feel the ground's texture under your walking shoes.
Rabbi Daniel Silver suggests that "Joy is a mood, an openness to certain feelings which can be ours only when we accept life for what it is, a short passage between the dependency of infancy and the dependency of age," with change flux, growth, and regression, all part of the process.
Rabbi Silver taught that it is possible to live meaningfully and joyously in a world of change; even with the setbacks and sorrows.
This summer standing under a wedding canopy, I caught for a moment - the expression on the face of the bride's mother.
Years ago, as a brilliant young girl, this woman had been forced to flee Hitler and the Holocaust, losing her father, and the world she knew. Instead of lamenting the broken possibilities of that old world, she built a new world here. She and her husband, surrounded by their children and loving friends, so many of whom they had worked with in the arena of justice and social reform, were savoring the joy of watching the wedding of their youngest child. I could see it all - in an instant - in her eyes. (comirwned on Page Two)

(Rabbi's Message. .. continued)
Now we approach Yom Kippur with the wisdom of this woman's life. Given the world as it really is, that next year's headlines will, in their own way be as fearsome as this year's, but that the human interest stories will be as heartwarming as this year's as well.
We approach Yom Kippur with the knowledge that joy is a mood, an openness which can be ours only after we accept life for what it is, and for what it is not.
We open our eyes on Yom Kippur to discover what we can achieve. Litrot ha Kol - "in spite of all."
On Yom Kippur, for what do we pray? For the same Shana Tovah of Rosh Hashanah.
We pray to rid ourselves of our shortcomings, or selfishness, our lovelessness, our despair, our self pity.
More than merely wish our neighbors and our society, "a good year," we begin to work for it through acts that bg joy and happiness to others; love and encouragement mto the world.
Not through coping alone, but with courage a..'ld commitment as well.
A sickly, old man of 96 who had lost his wife and children was planting fruit trees which couldn't be harvested for a decade, "For my neighbor's children," he explained, enjoying the moist feel of the earth in his feeble hands. He was sealing himself in the Book of Life for a good year.
. So may we as well.
Fondly, Rabbi Fredric S. Pomerantz
President's Message Dear Congregants:
This article is to appear in your homes during the midst of our High Holidays and appropriately I should be noting with appreciation all the volunteers who have assisted in preparation and the conduct of our services. Note that I start with the operative word "volunteers" since that is one of the most significant "commodities" which keeps our Temple functioning as a place of worship, a center of study, and a place of assembly.
However, I would first like to give recognition to our staff - the administrative, grounds, as well as professional. Sure we pay for their services. But often, we take for granted that our calendar of events will go on, our administrative matters will be attended to, and our building will be maintained. These are the people who have made it their number one duty to see that these things do happen and they do it well. On our administrative staff we have four wonderful ladies - Gail Earman, Toube Feit, Serna Heller and Dorothy Donnelly. Our custodial staff consists of Effie and Henry Berkman and Maria and Evo Galinac. During this period when we are most attentive to the quality of performance at the Temple, a hello and a thank you to these people can reinforce their fine performance.
Our professional staff led by Rabbi Pomerantz and which includes Cantor Bar-Nissim, our Education Director Evie Rotstein, Nursery School Director Jeanne Schreiber, Youth Leader Sherry Newman and Parenting Center Director Hope Eliasof also are deserving of special recognition by eacb of us for their many years of creative service to our
Temple Beth El Bulletin
Temple community. Please take a moment out during the High Holiday period or any time that you happen to be interfacing with them and say thanks.
While we are in the midst of the most important event in the Temple calendar, the High Holiday services, I will take the opportunity on a timely basis to give recognition as well as state my appreciation to those who make these services come together so well. It takes weeks of preparation, scheduling, coordination of maintenance chores, selecting and contracting individuals for alliyahs, among other matters, to have the beautiful services we have. Our Ritual Committee, led by Steve Birken, met many times to plan the services and to do miscellaneous tasks such as sorting and mailing the High Holiday tickets. The Ritual Committee includes Harry Albirt, Lisa Friedman, Barry Isaacs, Mitch Rosenthal, Phyllis Semegran, Gerry Salen, Patty Sc:hreiber, Shirley Sisselman, Barry Tenser, Alan Urkowitz, and Jack Valensi. These committee members and others, principally from our Men's Club, also serve as the ushers. Sherri Newman, with the assistance of Evie Rothstein, has developed and will run a wonderful program for our young children, including for the first time a Junior Congregation for our 4th through 7th graders. Our Cantor and choir, along with the organist, spent many weeks in rehearsal to bring beauty to our service with their music. The individual who of course sets the tone and give us inspirational messages is the Rabbi. I thank all these individuals and their families for what they do and I thank them on your behalf.
As mentioned in my last column, the summer was spent in search of a new Temple Executive Director. I am happy to announce that Margery Gilmore of Fort Lee has been hired and will start October 16th. Prior to coming to our Temple she served in a similar position at Temple Sinai of Bergen County (Tenafly) and previous to that she was an administrator for three law firms. At Temple Sinai, in addition to her duties, she helped establish a singles group. conducted UAHC classes at the Temple and was an active member of their Social Action Committee. Marg has two daughters, ages 14 and 20 and her interests include acting and directing. On behalf of the Officers, Trustees, and all the congregants, I want to welcome Marg to our congregation.
A group of volunteers, who spent much of their summer vacation in search of the new Executive Director, should also be noted for your appreciation. The committee was chaired by Patty Schreiber and included Marty Kasdan, Shirley Sisselman, Nancy Pivar, Jack Valensi and Rabbi Pomerantz.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that we have made it a policy not to disrupt the High Holiday services with an appeal on behalf of the Temple. Over the years, you have responded generously without us having to do this. Last year, unfortunately, we did not have the success we had in the past. I do not intend to interrupt our services with this kind of appeal; however, our budget does require significant fundraising to supplement the dues and fees. Please respond generously when called by our volunteers and if for some reason you are missed by our callers, don't wait - please send a check today and mark it " High Holiday Appeal."
Regards, Jan

From the Religious School Our traditional Consecration Ceremony till take place on
Friday evening, October 13, at 7:30 p.m., for all our new K-3rd grade students.
This special occasion is celebrated with flowers, gifts, certificates and lots of eager wide eyes entering the Sanctuary together in a beautiful processional. As the Cantor sings the Torah Emeth song we will gaze at our future Jewish generation. We will proudly watch them as they are blessed by the Rabbi, knowing that providing a Jewish Education is part of our job as Jewish parents -
"Train up a child in the way he should go and even when he is old he will not depart from it. "
(Prov. 22:6)
This year we will have 2 opportunities to involve these new children and their families in a Temple initiation:
1. Saturday, October 7, 11-12:30 p.m. Our "Holiday Go Around " - hands on pro
jects and activities for the Fall Holidays. We
Page Four
will decorate the Sukkah together and have a picnic lunch.
2. The evening of Consecration we will celebrate with a Shabbat Dinner - and lots of singing.
Our goal is to include family participation as frequently as possible. These parent/child experiences are truly the most important model of Jewish Education. The endeavor of "teaching the next generation" is a joint effort, both school and family.
We look forward to the other scheduled Family Events for the K-3rd graders -

The opening of school is always an exciting time of year. Our staff, now numbering nine full time teachers and three part time teachers, has been busy preparing the classrooms for the arrival of the children. We are very proud of the environment which we have provided. We would like to thank Henry for all of the work that he did this summer in our classrooms.
The excitement of the children is contagious. It is wonderful to see the returning students ccome in with confidence and enthusiasm. Our many new students approached their first day with more caution but were thoroughly enjoying themselves by mid-morning. I think all of the children went home from their first day feeling good about Nursery School.
We're looking forward to celebrating the fall Jewish Holidays with the children and the Rabbi. A Happy and Healthy New Year for the Nursery School Staff!

Cantor's Corner I would like to remind you that the Simchat Torah
celebration will take place Friday evening, October 20th. Every year several people show up at the Temple the day
after Simchat Torah wondering why there is no service. The reason is that every Jewish calendar (sometimes mistakenly, even in calendars published by the Reform movement), lists Simchat Torah on the 8th day of Sukkot. Since the Reform movement, as in Israel, doesn't observe the second day of Yom Tov, our celebration of Simchat Torah has always been celebrated on the eve of the 7th day of the holiday .
Our Junior Choir and a band will provide the musical beat to march with the Torah. Hopefully we'll have nice weather so we can have our seventh Hakafah outdoors around the Temple.
Please bring your children to this joyous service. "Chag Sameach" - Happy holiday .

How Should We Commemorate The Shoah In Our Homes?
Remembering the HolocaJst is a mitzvah incumbent not only upon the survivors of the death camps and their offspring, but upon every Jew in America and everywhere, today and for all tomorrows. It is a mitzvah incumbent upon every human being who believes in freedom and human dignity .
We must make Yom Hashoah a holy day commemorated in every Jewish home throughout the world. .
Let us begin the process in the home, with the participation of children - the link in the chain of memory and tradition.
As part of the Yom Hashoah commemoration, yellow tulips should be planted in front of every Jewish home, synagogue and organization. In the window of every Jewish home let us display six yellow tulips, symbolizing the Six Million. Tulips.are the flower of Holland, and Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Bulgaria were $e only countries that saved Jews during the Holocaust. Tulips flower in April, at the time of Yom Hashoah. They are a symbol of renewal and rebirth. Yellow gives pride to the yellow star that the Nazis forced Jews to wear.
The time for planting tulips is in the fall . Let us plant early-blooming and late-blooming tulips, since the 27th of Nisan may occur between April 7 and May 6 in different years . Involve your children in the planting (and the tending) of the tulips near your home and near your synagogue.
Yellow tulips can also be part of a family commemoration of Yom Hashoah. In such a ceremony, six candles may be lit in memory of the Six Million, and a yellow tulip placed beside each, to honor the righteous Gentiles who tried to save Jews and symbolize the rebirth of our people and their hope.
Yellow tulips in every Jewish home will reach all Jews and Gentiles, all ages and generations. From generation to generation, they will tell the story. From country to country, they will bring the message: There is goodness in every one of you. Let it flower. Let it be an etemal blessing.
