“The Pearl of the West” is the affectionate name that the local residents have for Mexico´s second largest city: Guadalajara. Founded in 1542 and with an estimated population of over 4 million people, Guadalajara is the capital of the State of Jalisco and source of some of the best‑known Mexican exports: pottery, handcrafted wood furniture, tequila, and mariachi music, among others.

Many local and regional customs and traditions have become national symbols. Mariachi music, tequila, charreadas (Mexican rodeo), broad-brimmed hats, and its regional cuisine are but a few of them.

Guadalajara offers its visitors a vibrant culture, interesting museums, exciting nightlife, great food and a pleasant weather. It is a city with a great balance between tradition and modern lifestyle.

Due to its privileged location, major touristic attractions may be easily reached by bus: - Mountainous towns, such as Tapalpa and Mazamitla- Chapala Lake (the largest in Mexico)- Beautiful colonial cities such as San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico City, Morelia, and Zacatecas- Beach towns, such as Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta and others in the Pacific Ocean coastline

Guadalajara is known for its mild climate and its metropolitan area is famous for the wide diversity of its productive sector: electronics, furniture, shoes, food and beverage, auto parts, agro industry, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, arts and crafts. Important industrial parks have opened in the last years where several significant international firms are already established.

According to the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) magazine by the Financial Times Group (2007), Guadalajara was the highest ranking major Mexican city. Guadalajara had the second strongest economic potential of any major North American city and only Chicago scored more highly for sheer economic potential. Guadalajara’s youthful population, low unemployment and large number of recent foreign investment deals are good indicators that Mexico’s second largest city has a bright future.

Guadalajara offers a unique insight into a “true” México. Home of the mariachi and not far from the town of Tequila, this city is very well fit to provide an enriching experience to any of its visitor. Between its agreeable climate, close proximity to an array of both commercialized and virgin beaches, and of course, its friendly “tapatíos” I was always busy with something exciting. I enjoyed the fact that Guadalajara, is like a large “town”; a place where one of the tallest buildings is its cathedral, but containing in its limits more than 6 million people. Depending on my mood, I always had a choice of a weekend to the beach, to the natural wonders of Tapalpa or Mazamitla, or just wandering around the city. I would recommend Guadalajara to any traveller or student, as there are so many things to do and see!”

Educational model

The educational model focuses on the students and their learning, for which students are held responsible; the professor plays the role of facilitator and guides the students in discovering knowledge and its applications on their own.

In order to achieve these objectives, the educational model emphasizes collaborative work and uses didactic techniques such as problem-based learning, project-oriented learning, and the case-solving method. This way, knowledge is applied to solving real life problems, it makes studying meaningful and becomes the object of critical reflection and social commitment.

The educational model includes numerous processes which are enhanced by the use of information technologies and telecommunications. The students use the computer to do their homework, fulfill their learning objectives and interact with their classmates and professor, which favors the students’ active participation, encourages responsibility, facilitates internationalization and forms authentic learning communities.

Through the Community Social Service, the students of the Tecnológico de Monterrey participate in the university’s own social projects, as well as those undertaken by different organizations of the civil society, government organizations and charitable institutions. This experience allows them to become aware of the social reality of other groups, understand the needs of their environment and apply their acquired knowledge by participating in the country’s social and economic development.

The language classes as well as the classes we had in common with local MBA students were challenging and entertaining at the same time, teaching us Spanish and business skills at the same time. Being on the campus of Tec enabled us to mingle with Mexicans who were more than happy to find language partners. The city of Guadalajara also has such an array of activities and sights that one semester there would not suffice to visit it all. My experience at TEC de Monterrey in Guadalajara was the best time of my life. I was very active playing on the University womens soccer team; and got to travel to other states to compete. The teachers were amazing, they were always there to help you out. I would definetely study abroad to TEC campus Guadalajara again because you will meet a lot of local student to practice your Spanish; go to many events arranged by the student service staff and you have the opportunity to travel with the school on various trip to Puerto Vallarta, Guanajuato and Michoacán, etc. Studying abroad was the best experience. I can’t stop talking about it, and every person I have met through university, I tell them to go study in Guadalajara.

I spent great days in Guadalajara, Mexico. I stayed for a short time, but it was enough to discover how wonderful this country is. I loved the people, food, culture and music. I studied Spanish at TEC, and after 5 weeks, I could communicate with Mexicans. The best memory I have is my time with the orphan kinds. They told me lots of things, and I will never forget the days I spent with them. I’m sure that I’ll go back to Mexico one day!

Studying abroad isn’t just about academic studies; it’s about making new friends, learning new traditions, discovering new cultures, exploring landmarks and more. The Tecnológico de Monterrey continually promotes ongoing interactions with others — at school, in local businesses and within the local community.

When in Mexico, do as the Mexicans do — dance, sing, and enjoy the arts!Discover the cultural aspects of our country by participating in classes and workshops like:• Dancing — jazz, tango, salsa, break-dance, belly dance, folk dancing, capoeria.• Music — singing, violin, percussion instruments, guitar, drums.• Arts — photography, clay modeling, painting and theater.

Take advantage of your time in Mexico to explore and uncover all the excitement our country has to offer. Throughout the year, the International Programs Office organizes field trips to both cultural and tourist sites around the country. Some visits may include:• Excursions to Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Mexico City, Michoacán, among others.• A journey back in time to the Teotihuacan or Teopanzolco pyramids.• Fun beach vacations to Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, amd the south of Mexico.

Living and studying in Guadalajara at Tec was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! The professors and staff were extremely helpful, and I took two great extracurricular classes: Mexican Culinary Arts and Flamenco Dance. One of my favorite memories is the Cultural Demonstration at the end of the semester when all of the dance groups performed and our culinary class made 750 assorted tarts for the audience members. I really miss the vibrant campus community, speaking Spanish, and eating tacos!
