Dear NAHAD Members,

The NAHAD Board met in mid-September at the Gaylord Hotel located outsideWashington, D.C., site of our April, 2013 Annual Meeting and Convention. It is a very impressive venue on the east bank of the Potomac River across the river fromAlexandria, VA and within sight of our nation’s capital. We hope you will enjoy thisimpressive facility with its enclosed atrium, the sites of National Harbor and thecountless attractions of Washington, D.C.

The Board is pleased to announce we have a fiscally strong organization and despite the challenges consistentwith many industry organizations; is a growing enterprise. The recent meeting in April, 2012 had the highestattendance in NAHAD’s 28 year history. A great deal of time was spent at this Board meeting fine tuning the2013 schedule and engaging your comments from last year to try to improve our value offering to our mem-bership at our annual event. The Board engaged in candid dialogue focused on improving our organizationthrough its varied initiatives and committees. As an example please take a few minutes to review the detail ofthe exciting new Hose Safety Institute detailed in this newsletter. A special thank you is extended to theOfficers and Directors listed on the left margin of this page for their dedication to the organization and theirvalued input at the meeting.

While attending another industry function in September, I had the pleasure of speaking with Curtis Sprague, aformer President of NAHAD, who is involved with the Industrial Careers Pathway initiative which will assistour membership fill its future career positions. Of particular interest are opportunities to hire a U.S. veteranthrough the outplacement services of ICP and the various branches of our military. This program provides thedistributor the opportunity to hire a mature individual with immediate skill sets (as in fluid power) throughoutplacement services at military bases throughout the country. Information is provided by going towww.nahad.org and click on the ICP link on the left or by simply going to www.industrialcareerspathway.org.This is an often overlooked value of our membership worthy of some investigation and what better way toimprove your company than hiring a veteran.

Best Regards,Don Fritzinger, NAHAD President

We aim to accomplish thisgoal utilizing a strategic product portfolio and dedi-cating our service and support systems to exceed our customer’s expectations of value. Parker hasbeen doing a nice job of expanding its presence inthe market and our ambition is continued growth.

NAHAD: What are your goals as a new member of the NAHAD Board of Directors?

Barrett: A personal goal is to try to motivate someof our distributors who aren’t active within NAHADto get active within NAHAD. NAHAD: How does NAHAD benefit itsmembers?

Barrett: They provide unique tools andtraining materials that are valuable to distrib-utors from a business standpoint. NAHAD’sUniversity of Industrial Distribution helpspeople interested in entering the industrylearn the skills required and the career path-ways available. During the NAHAD conven-tion, distributors get an opportunity to seewhat’s new in the marketplace at one pointin time with a number of manufacturers. The convention also brings value in terms ofindustry trends and what other distributorsare seeing.

Scott Johnson, senior executivevice president forLewis-Goetzand Company

NAHAD: Tellme a little aboutyour history andhow you got into

this industry.

Scott Johnson: I’ve been the industry forquite a while. Right out of college I went towork for Gates Rubber Company and was afield rep for them in their West Virginia mar-ket. I was with them for a year before I wentto work for my largest distributor, IndustrialRubber Products, who was located in WestVirginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. I spentmany years with Industrial Rubber Products, and they were acquired by Lewis-Goetz in2002. And I’ve been with Lewis-Goetz eversince.

NAHAD: What do you like best about thisbusiness?

Johnson: I definitely have to say it’s thequality of the people in this industry. Thereare a lot of very good, hard-working peoplein the industry with high integrity.

NAHAD: How would you describe Lewis-Goetz, and what is its key differentiator?

Johnson: Lewis-Goetz is a very large indus-trial rubber products distributor that has astrong footprint across North America. Ourkey differentiator is that we target and focuson the larger customers, customers that havemultiple locations and would value the prod-ucts, services, fabrication quality and safetyperformance that Lewis-Goetz is able to provide across each company’s footprint.

NAHAD: Now that Lewis-Goetz is part ofERIKS, how does that impact the company’sfuture growth plans?

Johnson: It only enhances our growth plans.ERIKS has a long-term vision for continuedgrowth, and they’re very interested in theNorth American market. So they’ll be able to provide the resources we need to growboth organically and through acquisition.

NAHAD:What are your goals as a newmember of the NAHAD Board of Directors?

Johnson: Before becoming a board member,I had been a NAHAD member for manyyears, and I’ve gotten a lot out of NAHADboth through contacts and through the HoseSafety Institute and its predecessor. So mygoal is to give back in any way that I can,and to continue to enhance the Hose SafetyInstitute, which is one the best programs I’ve seen put together by an industry organization.

NAHAD:What are the biggest benefits toNAHAD members?

Johnson: One of the greatest benefits avail-able is being able to make new contacts withthe different manufacturers, and being ableto meet manufacturing workers at all levelsof responsibility, from the regional salespeo-ple all the way up to the principals of theorganizations. That’s not easy to come by, especially for many smaller distributors.

Scott Moss of Moss Rubber & EquipmentCorp., Benicia, CA.

NAHAD: Tell me a little about your historyand how you got into this industry.

Scott Moss:Moss Rubberwas founded in1965 by myfather, DonMoss, and hisbrother Leon, and I beganworking for thecompany in themid-1980s in

the warehouse as I attended high school andcollege. I began learning the business fromthe ground up. After graduating college in1991, I worked on the inside sales desk andeventually outside sales. And then in 2001, I helpedstart our Benicia branch, and that’s where I currently spend the majority of my time.My brother Greg and I are partners in thebusiness, and Greg works out of our SouthSan Francisco office.

NAHAD:What do you like best about thisbusiness?

Moss: I enjoy the people associated with theindustry. Over the years, I’ve benefited fromclose relationships with customers, employ-ees, suppliers and also other distributors. Ona day-to-day basis, I enjoy finding productsand applications that help solve problems for our customers and keep their projectsmoving.

NAHAD: What key trends are you seeingright now in this sector?

Moss: Consolidation and acquisitions bysuppliers, distributors and customers seemsto be a continuing trend that is affecting all aspects of the business both positivelyand negatively. Pricing pressures due toincreased raw material costs is also a trendthat seems to be more prevalent in the lastfew years.

NAHAD: How would you describe yourcompany, and what is its key differentiator?

Moss: Moss Rubber is customer- andemployee-driven for the long term. We oper-ate and make daily decisions that focus oncreating loyalty and trust from both our cus-tomers and employees. This philosophy hasallowed Moss Rubber to maintain long-termquality relationships with both our customersand employees.

NAHAD: What are your company’s mainmarkets?

Moss: Our main markets are refineries, petrochemical plants and their contractors, and heavy construction.

NAHAD: What are your goals as a newmember of NAHAD’S Board of Directors?

Moss: I’d like to be an active contributor tothe leadership and growth of an organizationthat has served our company in the industryfor 28 years.

NAHAD: How does NAHAD benefit itsmembers?

Moss: The annual convention provides out-standing opportunities for learning and net-working with the leading manufacturers anddistributors in our industry. Relationshipsdeveloped through NAHAD can provideimmeasurable long-term benefits to individu-als’ or companies’ growth and success in the industry.

I’m looking forward to the time I’ll be serv-ing on the board and hope I can help growand promote NAHAD as an industry-leadingassociation.

Throughout the processthere exists a tightly controlled environmentresulting in the repeatedly high quality ofannealing that the furnace offers and cus-tomers demand. The annealed parts consis-tently meet the companies' rigid standards for appearance and hardness. Globe GeneralManager, Kevin Lewis, added that with thefurnace, the company can minimize the man-ufacturing process cycle time, reduce materialhandling steps and more accurately scheduleproduction of customer orders.

Institute members are currently participat-ing in pilot testing the five new exams.More than 3,000 certificates have beenissued to individuals who have successful-ly passed the online Hose AssemblyGuidelines exams since their initial intro-duction in 2005.

In addition to the exams serving as power-ful employee training and recognitiontools for distributors, they also enhancethe business in other ways. The require-ment that each company assign a trainingcoordinator to facilitate the exams, forexample, has led to unexpected changes. For some companies, adoption of the pro-gram marked the first time that trainingefforts were spearheaded by a single per-son, which sparked the formation of for-malized training programs and the creationof internal quality manuals.

The exams’ effects on employee moralealso exceeded expectations. Companyadoption of the program has spurredincreased emphasis on employee develop-ment, and the recognition that employeesreceive when they earn their certificateshas instilled a stronger sense of apprecia-tion and loyalty.

Advisory Council Connects InstituteMembers & Customers

Another powerful benefit of adopting theHandbook, exams and guidelines is theimpact that they have on customers and

end-users. With increasing customer focuson hose safety and reliability, especiallyhose assemblies going into particularlyhazardous environments, the last thingcustomers want is a hose assembly to failneedlessly, resulting in downtime, spills, fines or personal injury. The ability to dis-tinguish hose distributors who have a com-mitment to safety from those who don’t isextremely valuable to customers. HoseSafety Institute members have committedto using the HANDBOOK guidelines andto meeting other eligibility criteria, givingend-users more peace of mind and confi-dence.

In keeping with its focus on engaging end-users, the Hose Safety Institute AdvisoryCouncil, comprised of end-user represen-tatives of key hose markets, offers adviceand input to the Institute, while alsoaddressing their specific market needs andapplications. Current Council membersrepresent a variety of industries and markets, including Military, Mining,Transportation, Oil & Gas, Agriculture,Bio-processing, U.S. government agenciesand Product Testing. The Council willmeet at the NAHAD offices in Annapolis,MD in December to further its work insupport of the Hose Safety Institute.
