*Welcome to our presentation on using Skype, Email and Podcasting in the K-12 Classroom.*Skype was founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennstrm and Janus Friis. It is available in 27 languages It is a software program that uses Voice over Internet Protocol, a technology that allows you to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular phone lines. The software program is free to download at skype.com and is free to use when calling other skype users. The service allows the user to not only talk with another user, but you may also share files, hyperlinks, and conference call as well as see each other on video .There are programs using Skype that charge the user to call land lines and mobile phones and for landlines and mobile phones to call your Skype number they are called SkypeOut and SkypeIn. *-As with any technology that students may use in the classroom or at home for that matter, there are several reminders that you should give to students. They should not type their real name when logging in to the program. They should not share their exact location or city when logging in.They should not use names that could be misunderstood by others (We know how middle school students love to do this)They are not to SkypeOut. This program would charge for a phone call to a landline after 5 minutes.A helpful video is available to teachers that want to use Skype in their classroom.*The term podcasting was coined by Adam Curry a former MTV host. Podcasting is a very flexible and accessible medium to record and publish audio files. All you need to create a podcast is a microphone, computer, and audio editing software. Some of the most common production software includes; Sony Corp.'s Acid Music Studio, Apple Computer Inc.'s GarageBand, or the free, open-source software Audacity. After production and editing a recorded file it is then uploaded to a website for listening distribution. Some of the common sites to submit your podcast to are Apple's iTunes Music Store and Podcast Alley. *The four main parts of creating a podcast are; preproduction, recording, postproduction, and publishing. (Read from bullets above)A good resource for the creation of a podcast is the website learning-in-hand. This website has a wealth of information walking you through each step of the creation of your podcast. Not only does the website instruct, but it also provides links to the necessary hardware and software needed for your podcast.*The websites on this page provide information and downloads to the software that is needed to edit and publish your podcast.

*Electronic email was developed in 1972 along with the evolution of the internet. Email provides world wide message exchange and is the most widely used application on the internet today. *Email tips and safety is of utmost importance when transferring messages. Always compose messages carefully and keep them short. Clear and direct messages are helpful so the reader does not misinterpret them. Try not to use humor for the same reason. Proofread and always use netiquette.*(Read page as is)

*Students will be given a list of pre-selected authors from the teacher. Each student will choose one author from this page to interview. The students will be taken to the computer lab to research their author. The student will use the file labeled Author Study on their desktop. This file will include links to each authors website. Once the student is at the website it is their job to find the authors email address and other contact information.Once the student has found the authors email address they are to use their school email account to write an email requesting a phone interview with their author. The teacher has already created a form letter for the students to use they only need to copy and paste the letter and include their name. The student will need to check his or her email over the next several days for a reply. When the student receives the conformation including day and time they will write out a list of his or her questions and email them to the author. When the phone interview is finished the student will email a letter of thanks to the author.*The teacher will make all phone calls for this assignment. Once the interview time and date is set the teacher will contact the author at that time. The student will conduct the interview following the script that he or she created and emailed to the author. The call will be a conference call so all students can listen. The rest of class will take notes while the interviewer asks the questions. Student will end call by thanking the author for their time.*The final set in this project will be the creation of a podcast.Read from aboveThe presentations will take place in the computer lab were the podcast can be played back over the speaker system and the authors webpage can be viewed on the Smartboard. Student will introduce the author and play their podcast.*In this elementary lesson, the students will use Skype to connect with another classroom to discuss various community topics. Then the students will use email to send messages about projects that can be created about their communities the they will share with each other during a podcasting broadcast. *Using Epals a classroom will be found to do the communications with using Skype. Times and days of communication are discussed. The students then will briefly discuss events and happenings in their communities. *On another day email will take place to communicate how their communities compare and how they contrast. A project choice will be chosen.*After completing the projects the rehearsal of the podcast will begin. After all the preparation is made the broadcast will be the final step of this unit. *(Narration as written in the slide)*

Start with gathering a group of contacts that you trust to work with your students.Have students visit scientific websites that you have provided to them, such as discovery school, NASA, or large universities. They are then to locate a possible link for email to a person that may be able to answer questions that they are researching for their science fair projects. (You need to instruct students to first get approval from you for this contact)The student then emails this science professional, explaining what they are doing (without sharing their full name), and that they would like to set up a telephone ,preferably Skype, interview with them to ask them questions about research they are doing. They are to ask this professional in the email what dates and times they would be available to take the phone call. They are to email the professional a copy of the interview questions so that the scientists can adequately prepare for the interview. They are then to contact them at the time that was agreed upon. They should also email that professional a thank you letter after the interview is conducted (although I think snail mail is still more personable for this)*The student conducting the interview is to call the science professional using Skype. They need to conduct the interview in the classroom so that the teacher can monitor the call. The student conducts the interview being sure to follow the set of questions previously sent by email. The student politely thanks the scientists andAsks if they can recommend suggestions for them while doing their science project.

*(Narration as written in slide)*Okay, so podcasting is not free to school districts, but it is a way to have students get their science projects to compete with the rest of the world. Travel alone will cost more to districts. If a district wanted to send a prize-winning science fair project to a state or national science fair they would need to pay transportation expenses, hotel accommodations, provide chaperones, etc.Versus the cost of computers that they probably already have, inexpensive microphones and fairly inexpensive software programs. All of which will save money in the long run (usually after the first year)*(Narration as written )*This project takes place throughout the year in 7th grade. As students are learning about the Eastern Hemisphere in class. The teacher needs to be sure students are being sensitive of other cultural views and needs to monitor the communication between students.

The podcast is a culminating activity near the end of Eastern Hemisphere unit (usually toward the end of the year)*Prior to having students choose a country, the teacher needs to do a little research to find classes that speak English. This is not important for the email portion of the project, as epals has a built in translation system, however it will become important for the Skype portion of the project. The student then chooses a country that they would be interested in finding out more about from the list the teacher provides. The teacher needs to make an initial contact with the epal teachers to set up communication.Students will make their initial email to their assigned student introducing themselves.Students will share background information about themselves, focusing on culture and important events going on in their country. This will happen in a series of emails, not just one.

*Using email, the teachers and students will set up a video conference using Skype. This can be a bit tricky because of time zone issues. It may need to be done after school hours Sometime between 5 and 8 P.M. depending on the country chosen. The student will conduct the video conference at the time that was agreed upon. The teacher may want to record the video conference to share with administration, school board, and community members. This is a great way to get them to support technology in the classroom and you may find that more money is suddenly available for other technology resources.

    * Finally, (Narrate as written)Remember you will be sharing this broadcast with administration, board members and hopefully community members.*In this project students will be comparing standard units of measure to metric units. Each student will choose one standard unit of measure. They will be assigned a partner from a classroom in Great Britain. This will allow these to students to compare and share their perspective on their countries measurement system.(Read objective from above)*After you have been assigned a partner and unit of measure you are to contact your partner through the use of email. Your teacher will provide you with your partners name and email address. In your first couple emails get to know your partner sharing general information about yourself and your community.Between you and your partner decide what units you will be comparing. (one standard and one metric)When you have decided on the units of comparison email your topic to each students teacher.

*Once you have chosen your topic you will need increased communication with your partner. This will be done through the continued use of email and the introduction of Skype. You and your partner will define the roles of your group. Then you will need to determine what aspect of your units you will be comparing. At the end of the first Skype meeting the group will setup a timeline for their project and future meeting times. Remember to take into account the time difference when scheduling.*The last portion of the project will be a reflective podcast. Each student will create a podcast about their interaction with their partner from another country. What they learned about their partners metric unit and how it compares to their one standard unit. First the student will write a script for their podcast. Then they will record, edit, and publish it to the classes webpage. When the student has finished publishing their own podcast they will need to subscribe to their partners and listen to 3 other podcasts from the class. *This lesson is designed for the high school student upon entering college or trade. The students will use email to make contact with a mentor of their career choice, use Skype to question their mentor about career, and then broadcast their podcast to appropriate college or trade company.*First, contact with the professional using email for requesting their help with take place. Day and time of contact using Skype will be their second point of interest. A copy of questions that the student has prepared for their mentor will be attached to the email. After final project an email will be sent to say, thank-you. *Skype is used to discuss questions already submitted through email. After satisfaction with results are achieved then appropriate gratification is relayed.*Students finalize their findings and prepare for their broadcast using Skype. Equipment is set up and broadcast is sent to college or company of choice for consideration.
