Computers are as ubiquitous to learning as computers are to daily
living.
• Advantages– Internet offers limitless
classroom integration options
– Microsoft Suite can be used to teach
• Keyboarding (Word)• Charts, graphs
(Excel/PowerPoint)
– Search engines present research alternatives
• Challenges– Funding– Equitable access– Training
FOCUS• Traditional
– Lecture– Worksheets– Blackboard– Classroom only
• Modern– Hands-on
– Interactive– Cable-N-Class, Internet
– Distance/Online learning

MORE …Planning
"e-Learning will improve American education in valuable ways and should be universally implemented as soon as possible.“
(NASBE, 2001, p. 4)
No academic improvement; no pay off for costly investments.
(Mathews, 2000)
The analysis of more than 700 studies concluded that students who had access to educational technology showed positive gains in academic achievement.
Schacter (1995)
Takes funding away from other resources and programs that may be more beneficial to students .
(Healy, 1999; Oppenheimer, 1997)
Under the right conditions, technology: Accelerates, enriches, and deepens basic skills, motivates and engages students in learning.
Lemke and Coughlin (1998)
Technology sits idle and is underused. (Cuban, 2001)
Under the right conditions—where teachers are personally comfortable and at least moderately skilled…computers are clearly becoming a valuable and well-functioning instructional tool.
(Becker, 2000, ¶4)
Over-reliance on technology can rob from children of opportunities to express creativity, build human relationships, and experience hands-on learning.
(Alliance for Childhood, 2000)
CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY: SOME FOR, OTHERS AGAINST
• Educators and administrators must support and take appropriate measures to ensure equitable access/resources are available across district.
• Training and professional development opportunities must be made available to staff.
• Adequate infrastructure with onsite technical support is vital to functionality.
• Clear cut methods of extracting and measuring technology instruction data must be in place.
