LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Room for all to share at playgroundI noticed in your ‘‘what’s hot

and what’s not’’ column a com-ment about young teenagerstaking over the Pioneer Parkplayground equipment and notsharing with younger children.

This has happened when Itake my grandchildren to theplayground and all I have had todo is politely suggest they giveothers a turn.

My request has always beenmet with an apology and awillingness to share.

The youth of Te Awamutu are

a great bunch of happy, healthyteenagers and it was their need tohave a place where they couldrelax and enjoy each other’scompany that got the playgroundidea started. The equipment ismade especially strong to with-stand the energy teenagers putinto using it.

A new slide is about to join thesite following a last huge effort offundraising by Bobbie Fladgateand Betsy Bryant of the Play-ground Committee. This shouldmeet the needs of smaller chil-

dren using the park, along withall the other equipment that isdesigned to be user-friendly forall ages.

The playground has been ahuge success and I have neverseen it without children since itwas opened.

Families enjoy picnics andplay, teenagers enjoy hanging outtogether and using up theiryouthful exuberance, grandparents enjoy sitting in theshade watching their youngstershaving fun.

The links with the beautifulRose Gardens, the Event Centre, the Walk of Fame and PioneerWalk have all contributed tomaking this area of Te Awamutua very enjoyable place to visit.

All of these features have beenpromoted and supported bygroups of volunteers and thegrateful people of Te Awamututhank you all for your foresightin making Te Awamutu a greatplace to live, work and play.

Don’t undermineefforts to save eels

They’re nearly extinct andthe local community has beengetting behind efforts to save, appreciate and publicise thefate of our long-finned eels.

The museum held an exhi-bition from May to Novemberlast year.

The intermediate schoolkids in Room 6 made a peti-tion and presented it to anMP.

The eels were on TVNZ’sOne News, described by theparliamentary commissionerfor the environment JanWright as critically endan-gered.

So when Arohena Schoolproudly announced (January

22) the kids caught eels in itscommunity hunt late last yearI thought maybe they justhadn’t heard the news.

I reckon the intermediateschool kids need to mention tothe Arohena kids that that’snot such a great idea.

Then spread the word tothe grownups too.

I can’t tell the differencebetween short- and long-finned eels, can you? So whynot leave them all alone just incase.

Hares, rabbits andpossums . . . now that soundslike a good catch.

Well done.LEANNE STEEL

Contractors striveto maintain service

In response to Hayden Wood’sletter in Friday’s Courier, WaipaDistrict Council advises that thecontractors were working onWaitangi Day to catch up onuncompleted runs from Tuesday.

This was completed at theircost to meet the required level ofservice, and is not paid for by

council.There were, however, bins put

out by people thinking that theircollection day had not changedand these were collected as acourtesy.

The contractors revisited thearea to complete the run one daylater as per usual.

Rain good, but not enoughField monitoring has confirmed

rain last week had a positiveimpact on river and stream levelsbut nowhere near enough to easefuture concerns.

Dr Ed Brown from WaikatoRegional Council’s resourceinformation team said the rain hadmade things slightly better for thenorth Waikato streams.

Thinking about God

ChristianChristianCommentComment

Murray Olson - St John’s Anglican Church

I have been thinking a lot about God’smagnificent creation lately. This wastriggered by David Attenborough’s TV

programme Africa. The words of Psalm 104always come to mind when I watchprogrammes like this;

‘What a wildly wonderful world, God! Youmade it all, with Wisdom on your side, madeearth overflow with your wonderful creations.‘Psalm 104:24 (The Message Bible).

The reason these words come to mind is,I am always astonished how wonderfullybalanced the lives of all plants and animalsare with one another. Also their lives areoften in balance with the weather patterns.There is also the astonishing way that plantsand animals have adapted their lives to thisbalance of nature. No wonder the writer ofthe book of Genesis wrote;

‘And God saw everything that he hadmade, and, behold, it was very good’.(Genesis 1:31).

But, the sad thing is that this ‘very good’creation is being tampered with by humanityto such an extent that the outlook for thefuture of the earth is very bleak. Because ofhumanities’’ greed and over-exploitation ofresources, along with overpopulation, thiscreation that was once ‘very good’, is now ina very poor state. This is because globalwarming has caused increased droughtsand tornadoes, the melting of glaciers(Some of which are the reservoirs of waterfor millions of people) and the shrinking ofthe Arctic Ice Cap. At the same time moreanimals and plants are becoming extinct. The 2007 edition of the biodiversity ‘‘bible’’showed that more than a third of 41,000species surveyed were facing extinction: aquarter of all mammals, one out of eightbirds .....’. This is causing a tremendousdisruption to the balance of nature anddepleting the vast genetic bank that is innature.

We must all act now before it is too late.We must look after the environment byreducing consumption, re-using what wecan, recycling what we can’t reuse, buyinggood quality products that will last, buyingFair Trade coffee and rejecting unnecessarypackaging, to name a few things that we cando. But we also must look to God for helpand guidance in all this, because God is veryknowledgeable about creation. This isbecause God was the one who created allthings in the beginning and God’s care forcreation is no less now, than it was at thebeginning of time when ‘the earth was aformless void and darkness covered theface of the deep’ (Genesis 1:2).

Trainingtargets newtruckies

Trucking companies are so in need ofqualified big-rig drivers they have ral-lied together and once again engaged anaccredited training institute to come intothe area and deliver a Heavy TransportDriver Training Programme for ‘‘wanna-be truckies’’.

Otorohanga Carriers Associationpresident Eric Tait, Otorohanga Trans-port and Lime Haulage director CarolynChristian, and Freight Lines HR mana-ger Robyn Hedley are right behind thespecialised heavy transport driver train-ing programme to be launched in Otoro-hanga for the second time, commencingnext month.

Applications are now open for the16-week Certificate in Commercial RoadTransport Level 3 course which willdeliver safe and skilled professionaltruckers into the heavy vehicle industry.

‘‘There are just not enough peoplecoming in the gate for the number oftruck driver jobs available — and it’s aNew Zealand-wide problem,’’ says MrTait.

‘‘Carriers from Te Awamutu to Ben-neydale have identified the shortage hereand approached the Otorohanga CarriersAssociation for a solution.’’

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic deliveredthe course based in Otorohanga last year, with all 20 enrolled students graduatingfrom the course.

Since completing the course themajority of the students have success-fully gained full-time employment in theindustry both locally and further afield.

After the great success of last year’scourse BOP Polytechnic has once againbeen contracted to provide it.

The course will be based at FreightLines new specialised training facility atthe head office site on Main North Road.

T h e c o u r s e w i l l b e r u n b yOtorohanga’s Daniel Mateni with assist-ance from other polytec driver trainingtutors.

Graduates of this training course willdrive away with a Class 2 Licence whichcertifies them to operate an 18-tonne,two-axle truck, as well as gaining their F,D, T, W, R endorsements and comprehen-sive first aid certificate.

After the 16-week course they can thencontinue training to gain their Class 4,then Class 5 licences if they wish.

■ If you are interested in enrolling in thiscourse please attend the Open Day thisThursday, February 14 at Freight LinesLimited, head office, commencing at 10am.For further information please phone DanielMateni 027 2380374 or visitwww.boppoly.ac.nz.

Ngaroto joins lakeswith toxin warnings

Lake Ngaroto has beenissued with a health warningdue to a cyanobacterialbloom. This is an anticipatedseasonal event followinglonger daylight hours andwarm weather.

Lakes Whangape and Wai-k a r e a l r e a d y h a v ec y a n o b a c t e r i a l h e a l t hwarnings in place and Waahi,Hakanoa and Rotoroa (Hamil-ton Lake), the other lakes thatare tested regularly, all cur-rently remain below thew a r n i n g l e v e l f o rcyanobacteria.

Cyanobacteria are a formof algae which can producetoxins harmful to the health ofhumans and animals exposedto or swallowing the waterwhere the algae are growing.

Testing is carried out byWaikato Regional Councilmonthly during the warmermonths. The lakes which aretested may indicate, to someextent, cyanobacterial levelsin other shallow lakes in theregion.

‘‘During blooms, lakesshould not be used for anyactivity that involves skincontact with the affectedwater. Swallowing water fromlakes affected by bloomsshould also be avoided,’’medical officer of health DrDell Hood said.

‘‘Scums are a particularrisk because they contain ahigh level of toxins. If contactwith scum does occur, skinshould be rinsed clean andclothing changed as soon aspossible. This warning is par-ticularly important for chil-dren.

‘‘If people still choose touse the lakes when warnings

are in place, or any other lakewhere there are visiblechanges to water colour, theyshould shower and changetheir clothing as soon as pos-sible afterwards, even if nosymptoms are noticeable,’’she said.

Gift boosts van service

COMMUNITY Transport Trust chairperson Katherine O’Regan (third from left, accompanied by some of thevolunteers) accepts a donation of $6000 from Robyn Atherton, chairperson of the Te Awamutu Altrusa gardenramble committee and Te Awamutu Altrusa president Vicki Apps (third from right).

BY CATHY ASPLIN

Getting to health appointments inHamilton has been made easier forlocal people since the Te AwamutuCommunity Health Transport Trustbegan in 2011.

The trust’s van has clocked up85,000km since starting the serviceand demand continues to increase.

Trust chairperson KatherineO’Regan says part of the reason forthe increase is because clients nowinclude those having proceduressuch as dialysis and chemotherapy.

‘‘This has meant early starts atleast three days per week for thevolunteers.

‘‘We are also transporting peoplethat are having day surgery andthose who been discharged fromhospital.

‘‘Unfortunately, not everyone hasa friend or family member who canhelp transport them.

‘‘At the moment we are helpingaround 1200 people a year — of allages — get to their medicalappointments.’’

She says due to the different timesfor these appointments the van is notalways full and often makes four tripsa day.

‘‘For that reason we are consider-ing adding another smaller vehicle,so that if one one or two people needtransport we can do that efficiently.

‘‘Costs for diesel and road usagecharges are considerable and werequire ongoing funding to keep thisservice operating. It is not a freeservice, clients do make a donation, but we are also reliant on thegenerosity of our community.’’

For this reason the trust wasdelighted to receive a donation of$6000 from the Te Awamutu AltrusaClub.

The money was raised through itspopular annual garden ramble.

‘‘We are extremely grateful toAltrusa for their very generous dona-tion. It allows us to have some fundsavailable for either a second vehicleor the eventual replacement of thecurrent van.

‘‘We are very fortunate that com-munity groups such as Altrusa recog-nise the value of this service and arewilling to support it.’’

The trust relies on a large group ofvolunteers — these range from co-ordinator Mary Hayes to the driversand support people.

‘‘We currently have 16 drivers and16 support people rostered on to help.

‘‘In many cases couples havefound it is something they can dotogether to provide a valuable serviceto our community.’’

LANCE’S LOT

Sticks take place of carrotsThe changes to the Local Gov-

ernment Amendment Act are nowlaw and it is important people areaware of some of those changes —particularly people who have notbeen satisfied with their council’sperformance.

There are now sticks instead ofcarrots to ensure councils followthe Government’s wishes on theway councils are managed.

Lawyer Michael Garbett, apartner in Anderson Lloyd, recently released a precis of thechanges after studying the legisla-tion and this can be accessed onwww.andersonlloyd.co.nz.

The most fundamental andinvasive change for councils is

that the purpose of the Act and oflocal government has beenamended by removing the fourwellbeings ‘‘to promote the social, economic, environmental andcultural wellbeing’’ and replacedwith ‘‘council’s role is to meet thecurrent and future needs of com-munities for good quality localinfrastructure, local publicservices and performance of regu-latory functions in a way that ismost cost-effective for householdsand businesses’’.

Good quality is defined asbeing efficient, effective andappropriate to present and antici-pated future circumstances.

This new purpose is deliber-

ately narrower than in the past socouncils focus on ‘‘core services’’.

Significantly this means thatany person can seek a judicialreview of a decision or a projecton the basis that it falls outsidethe purpose of local government.

As well, now, when it comes toamalgamation or reorganisation adistrict has a right to a poll and it isaimed at giving smaller districts adegree of control when faced with atakeover by a larger council.

These are only some of thechanges and I urge people —particularly in an election year —to read the document in full.

LESLEY WYATTCambridge

Open up on forumCouncil staff and senior man-

agement are to be congratulatedon achieving a realistic rate risethis year.

It’s good to know that councilhas listened to the voice andwishes of the ratepayers throughthe rates march.

The new council elected laterthis year now have a rates modelto follow, and must follow, interms of future rate rises.

An annual fee of $66,000towards the Mayoral Forumseems a lot considering a numberof other participating councilswill be contributing to costs.

This means the MayoralForum will have an annual budget

of several hundred thousanddollars.

This level of funding soundslike another level of bureau-cracy which certainly isn’tneeded.

This Mayoral Forum hasbeen running for some time nowand I can’t ever remember anyinformation being released tothe public on what has beendiscussed and the results ofthese discussions to date.

It’s probably time the mayormade a public statement onthese matters and why such abig operational budget is justi-fied.

KEN GEORGE

Council bashing ad nauseumIs anyone else out there sick and tired of

all of these letters to the editor back andforwards bashing the council and council-lors?

Every week the same people are gettingtheir opinions made public saying whateverthe heck they want, telling everyone theyrepresent the voice of ‘‘average people in TeAwamutu’’.

You certainly don’t represent me, myfamily, or anyone else I know in this town.

It seems like letters to the editor have aone-track theme as this part of the Courierhas been over-run by opinionated people seton duking it out in a public forum. Can we nothave a separate column for them?

I’m all for people having their say, as longas it’s a balanced argument because I’mpretty sure council is not the money-burningdevil they are being painted as.

Where are the positive Waipa stories? Wewent to the Wetlands Family Day recentlyand it was amazing. The council are contri-buting to saving some of our country’samazing wetlands.

We have a young family with four kids and

we certainly don’t have loads of money tothrow around, but when we pay our rates andthey contribute to projects like Lake Serpen-tine, we are proud to tell our kids that.

Could the Courier consider separating theletters to the editor regarding council‘‘issues’’ and change the culture of thissection of the paper to more fairly representour district? It may help a varied group ofpeople to be motivated to write in with theiropinions and stories.

AMANDA REILLYEditor’s note: I welcome all letters to theeditor, but cannot control what topicspeople wish to write about. Like you, Ithink a change of topic would bewelcomed and encourage readers to cor-respond accordingly.Letters columns are often used to ‘have ago’ and councils are often the target. I alsoreject a number of letters, especially ifthey are regarding topics initiated inother publications, are about individualsor specific businesses, schools etc, if theybreach laws of racism, sexism etc and ifthey are substantially factually incorrect.

Rural women want parents involvedRural Women New Zealand says if the

government is to go ahead with itsproposed partnership or charter schools,it’s vital that parents and the communityare involved in their governance. ‘‘We areconcerned that though these schools are to

be publicly funded, the Education Amend-ment Bill as it stands means that parentsand the community may not have a say inhow they are managed,’’ says RuralWomen New Zealand educationspokesperson, Anne Finnie.

Rural Women believes that there aresome situations where partnership schoolscould work but the current proposalswould see them operating without thelevels of transparency expected for publiclyfunded projects.

• If your goal is to lose some weight, how about trying the following:• Keep a food diary — know what

you are eating each day• Reduce portion sizes — using a smaller plate helpsas you can still ‘fill’ the plate• Use less oil when cooking — try a cooking spray• Lose weight slowly — aim for 0.5 — 1kg per week• Incorporate at least 30 min exercise most days of theweek — moderate level• Try to stick to set eating times — making sure youare not eating too late at night• Reduce alcohol intake — try a glass of waterbetween drinks

Win tickets toCanadian comicRussell Peters

Canadian comedic sensationRussell Peters is coming to theentertainment hub of the Pacific,Auckland’s Vector Arena onWednesday, March 13, and wehave a double pass up for grabs foryou to take in his all new Notori-ous World Tour show.

Russell Peters’ stand-up per-formances are mostly made up ofobservational comedy where heuses humour to highlight racial, ethnic, class and culturalstereotypes. He often refers to hisown life experiences growing up inan Indian family and imperson-ates various English accents ofdifferent groups in his act to pokefun at each group. He does notintend to put down or offenddifferent races and cultures, butinstead tries to raise them upthrough humour.

Peters attributes a performancehe did on the Canadian TV comedyshow Comedy Now! in 2004, whichwas uploaded onto YouTube andbecame viral, as the turning pointin his career.

While the initial video uploadfeatured his performance in its 45minute entirety, subsequentvideos uploaded by other YouTubeusers were snippets of that per-

formance, chopped into each of thecultural groups he targeted.

According to Peters, thosesnippets made their way to thosespecified cultural groups, andwere well received by them.

Peter’s show will featureOfficial Tour DJ’s Starting FromScratch and Sinbad (Peters hasbeen a Hip-Hop ‘junkie’ since hisyouth), as well as video camerasand screens for an up close andintimate show which will capturehis signature audience improv inan arena setting.

And hecklers beware! To helpcombat the verbal and physicalbullying he encountered growingup because of his ethnicity, Peterstook up boxing — a skill he stillretains to this day. So don’t pushyour luck!

For a show that packs a punch,Russell Peters is the man — nocontest!

Tickets from Ticketmaster.

■ To be in towin simply put yourname, address and daytime phonenumber on the back of a standardsized envelope, address it to theRussell Peters Double PassCompetition andmake sure it reachesour office by 5pm, Friday.

have to say that none of them can compare to the screen version. You could see and feel the pain, sorrow, shame, suffering and death from the actors that made it so real. Not only beautifully done and with things that
