DESCRIPTION
Triathlon Club of San Diego's monthly newsletterTRANSCRIPT
“Where should I ride?” is aquestion I am frequentlyasked. Legally, bicyclists haveall the rights and duties of amotorist when riding on road-ways (Vehicle Code §21200(a));however, there are specific lawsas to where on the roadway abicyclist should ride.
Marked BikeLanes
Obviously, if there is a markedbicycle lane, a bicyclist is arguablyrequired to ride within the bicyclelane and in the same direction astraffic. Vehicle Code §21208(a)only allows a bicyclist to move outside the bikelane under four conditions:n When overtaking and passing another bicycle,
vehicle or pedestrian within the lane or aboutto enter the lane if you cannot safely passwithin the bike lane;
n When preparing to make a left turn at anintersection or into a private road or driveway;
n When reasonably necessary to avoid debris or other hazardous conditions;
n When approaching a place where a right turnis authorized (for example, a right turn onlylane and you are proceeding straight).
If you must leave the bicycle lane under any of
these circumstances, that maneu-ver must be made with reasonable safety onlyafter giving an appropriate signal if any vehiclemay be affected by your movement. If no vehicleis affected by your movement, it can be argued noturn signal is required. (See my article entitled“When is a Turning Movement Illegal” for a briefsummary of the law relating to Vehicle Code§22107.)
No Bike LaneWhere there is no marked bike lane, it is mostimportant for motorists and bicyclists to share theroad. A bicyclist is required by Vehicle Code§21200(a) to “ride as close as practicable to theright-hand curb or edge of the roadway” exceptunder the same four conditions listed above.

Craig: What was your sports backgroundprior to triathlon?
Erin: I grew up in Placerville, California, whichis located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada’snear South Lake Tahoe. I grew up trying prettymuch every sport there was to offer in myhome town (soccer, softball, volleyball, swim-ming, basketball, track & field, cross-country);it took me a long time to decide which sportI wanted to put all my efforts into. After a lotof heartache and indecision, I finally decidedduring my senior year of high school thatswimming was the sport for me.
I walked onto the UC Santa Cruz women’sswim team in college and had the time of mylife! I worked really hard and managed toqualify for NCAA’s three of the four years; Ireceived seven All Americans in total atNCAA’s. My best race was the 200 breast-stroke my junior year. I managed to place thirdoverall! Swimming has really taught me how towork hard and how dedication and persistencepays off; it also has given me some great storiesand memories I will cherish for the rest of mylife.
How did you get started with triathlon
Erin: In college we had to fundraise money forthe swim team, and one of the main volunteerevents we did was work the Santa Cruz Triathlon(Olympic distance) every year. The only way you
could (1) get out of volunteering both days (Iknow, terrible of me) and (2) get to take it easyat our Saturday swim workout before the racewas to actually participate in the triathlon.Seemed like a sweet deal to me! So the summerbetween my freshman and sophomore year Ibought a road bike and raced! I did that raceevery year until I graduated; to this day it is stillmy favorite race. One of these years I will makeit back to do it again!

Erin Hunter“ APPAREL & EQUIPMENT

I recently had the pleasure of talking triathlon with Erin Hunter,
who has worn many hats for the Tri Club over the years, from
Potluck Coordinator to Head
Swim Coach. Please join me in
getting to know one of our
best volunteers. You will see
that she is also a pretty
accomplished athlete.
On course, Superfrog relay, run portion.
In 2015 you raced your first Ironman atCoeur d’Alene and finished one place awayfrom qualifying for Kona. Congratulationsfor such a great Ironman debut! What wasthis experience like?
Erin: My first Ironman racewas actually supposed to beChallenge Roth in Germany, but a few months before therace I realized that racewasn’t going to happen forme. Ironman Coeur d’Alene(IMCDA) was scheduled aroundthe same time of year so Idecided since I had already putso much time into trainingalready that I would switch itup and make it work. I am for-tunate to have a lot of friendsin San Diego that also train fortriathlons so I was able to do alot of my longer training work-outs with great people whohave a ton of experience andthey really helped push methrough the harder/longer train-ing days.
I honestly wasn’t convincedthat IMCDA was going to happen;the weather was forecasted to be 107 degreesFahrenheit (holy hotness)!! Everyone was talk-ing about how they were going to cancel therace or make it a half (which would have beendisappointing). They decided to start the raceat 0530 in the morning to try to and help beat
some of the heat. I woke up and asked mybrother, Erik, if he would rather spend the daywith me at the movies, and he just looked atme, rolled his eyes and told me, to suck it up.
Thanks Erik!
Not surprising toanyone the swim wentphenomenal. I wasfirst female overallincluded the pros outof the water. Hoppedon the bike and reallyenjoyed the firstloop of the bike; bythe time I was abouta third of the waythrough the secondloop, it started togetting REALLY hot.It felt like a blowdryer out there; theparamedics saidthat the heat per-meating off theroad was over 130degrees! I finishedthe bike still in
first place but then I started tothe run… and knew it was going to
be tough. Immediately I decided all I needed todo was run to each aid station, and then walkthe aid station shoving ice down my top anddumping water on my head. That worked wel,but I really started cramping bad halfwaythrough the run and had to walk a bunch. Iknew I was going to finish but thought there

might be some crawling involved. Even though I felt like I wasin bad shape I was WAY better off than the majority of the peo-ple left on the course. I would say 99% of the people were walk-ing by the time I got into my second loop. I was in position toqualify for Kona until two miles from the end when I got passedby two girls in my age group. I tried to stay with them; my heartwanted it, but my legs couldn’t run without cramping.
Honestly, even though it would have been cool to qualify forKona my two goals for the race were (1) to have fun and enjoyevery moment no matter how trying the day may be and (2) tofinish. I can say with a smile on my face that I achieved that. That feeling of running through the finish line and having MikeReilly tell you that you are an IRONMAN and knowing all thehard work you put in is a feeling I can’t even describe withwords, but it is a feeling that makes you realize that it was allworth it.
What suggestions do you have for those preparing fortheir first Ironman?
Erin: To enjoy the process; to live the minute, or the mile youare in. Don’t spend too much time thinking ahead or about theend of your workout or your race. The reality of training for anIronman is that 99% of the work is in the preparation, so if youdon’t enjoy your training days then you won’t have a successfulrace.
What really got methrough the longertraining workoutswas being creativewith my workouts;don’t always do thesame bike ride orthe same run route.Make a weekendvacation out of itand do a destina-tion ride or run!
What athleticaccomplishmentare you mostproud of?
Erin: In general Iam most proud ofmy collegiateswimming career.I am pretty sureeveryone on theteam thought I was crazy. You kind of have to be if youswim competitively. I would always be pushing the limit, get-ting up extra early to run up to campus, or do the extra/optionalswim workouts. I believed I could be great so I was going to do

everything I could to achieve that.
I squeaked into NCAA’s my sophomore year, so I wasn’t expect-ing to make finals. On the second day of the swim meet, I com-peted in the 400 IM and had a great race! I was in the second tolast heat so depending on thelast heat there was a chance Icould qualify for finals.
I remember standing on thepool deck next to my swim coach. I don’t think breathedthe entire four minutes. Whenthe results popped up I saw Ihad snagged the eighth spotand made finals! I think Ijumped 10 feet in the air, screamed, did a little dance, Imay have even kissed my coach(I can’t remember but seems likesomething I would do). Eventhough I had more successfulraces after that day, that race
and that day will always be my proudest
You have done a lot for the TCSD over the years – Pot LuckCoordinator and Head Swim Coach for three years, among
many other things. What have been the benefits foryou of getting so involved?
Erin: There are tons of benefits that come from volun-teering for TCSD; you get to interact with professionalathletes, you are provided opportunities to volunteerfor really fun things that you normally wouldn’t, lots ofyummy food, and you are surrounded by a wealth ofknowledge of the sport so you learn a lot. I would saythe number one benefit is all the great people youmeet. I have met some of my best friends through theclub and I am very thankful for that!
You obviously know a lot about swimming. Whatare some of your most common swim tips fortriathletes?
Erin: Rotation! A lot of triathletes (especially new toswimming) spend a lot of time on their bellies. Whileswimming, you should constantly be rotating side to

side, using your core and hips to do. So I spenda lot of time when I coach technique working onrotation and core strength.
What gives you the most joy as a swimcoach?
Erin: By being a swim coach for the Club it hasrenewed and reinvigorated my passion for swim-ming. I have been involved in swimming forsuch a long time I hadforgotten what it tookto get to the level I amat. I had taken forgranted how easy swim-ming is for me.
I have coached hun-dreds of peoplethroughout the years;many of them came toTCSD not being able toswim a full length ofthe pool or being ter-rified of putting theirfaces in the water.Working with peoplelike that and helpingthem overcome theirfear and finally beingcomfortable enough tocompete in a triathlon(or any race) is a greatfeeling. The excitementis palpable when theycome back to tell youthat they finished therace and actuallyenjoyed the swim(shocker!)! That isone of best feelings inthe world! In a way Ithink I get more outof volunteering forthe TCSD swim program than the people Icoach. I always leave the swim workouts with asmile on my face and feeling grateful.
What are your favorite benefits of TCSDmembership?
Erin: All the club races, especially theaquathlons. It is so fun to have a small localrace mid-week, on the beach, with pizza, and aguaranteed beautiful sunset.
You have probably done some amazingthings over the years with sports. Do youhave any particularly epic memories thatstand out
Erin: Over the years I have had the opportunitydo a lot of fun/ crazy things through sports. Lastyear I got to participate in the coast ride fromSan Francisco to Santa Barbara (375 miles in
three days, insanity!). To date that is
the hardest thing I have everdone on my bike, but I got toride through some of the mostgorgeous parts of California!
I would have to say the mostinsane thing that I did (multi-ple times) was in college. Everyyear we had two teams swim
from Santa Cruz Harbor to Monterey Harbor (sixpeople, 20 to 30 minute legs, rotate throughuntil you’re done), without wetsuits. That swimis about 26 miles if you swim in a straight lineand the water temperature varies between 52and 58 degrees (brrrrrrrr). With the threat ofgreat whites being high we were always sohappy to survive and not freeze to death. Therehave been a few years where there were smacks

Craig: Who have beensome of the mostinfluential people inyour life?
Erin: My family hashands down been themost influential groupin my life. My mom anddad have always beenmy number one fansand support system, even if I made deci-sions in my life (likequitting soccer, sorrydad!) they did notcompletely agreewith. They always trust-ed my decisions and were (and still are) alwaysthere to cheer or give a supportive hand. I amso fortunate to have parents that I can rely oneven as a grown-up. I also have to give a hugeshout out to my brothers; I really don’t knowwhat I would have done without them growingup and even now. They are always there give mea kick in the butt when I need one (literally andfiguratively).
Also, my swim coaches throughout the years.Coach Kenworthy for throwing me back in the pool when I had a hissy fit and kicked him in theshin; Terry Jones for seeing my potential in high school and all my UCSC college swimcoaches—Kim Musch, Joel Wilson, Larry Baeder, and James Cisneros—who pushed me harder and
farther than
I thought I could ever go.
What are your future goals with triathlon?(This could be far reaching. You might wantto work in the industry, hold an office withthe club, continue with swim coaching, orachieve some goal as an athlete.)

Running a marathon or half marathon in therain, heat or cold is not an exciting thought. However, as you can not control the weather, the best strategy is to be prepared. This is abrief list of some of the innovative strategiesand types that can implement the day of therace to face challengers weatherelements:
RAINIf it’s raining, have a
large garbage bag, make ahole for the head and use itwhile waiting for the start-ing gun.
If you have friends or fam-ily to support you, youcould give them a dryshirt or socks that canbechanged at the 18 milemark to feel fresh andget rid of the feeling ofbeing soaked and beingheld back.
If it’s raining andcold, use Vaseline onexposed parts of yourbody to help youstay warm. Because Vaseline iswaterproof, which will help keepthe heat in hands and legs. Justbe careful not to use Vaseline onthe face and neck, and thatVaseline does not allow the body tosweat efficiently. What you want isfor that excess heat (and yes, therewill be excess heat when you run evenif it’s cold) to properly dissipate.
COLDIf it’s cold, bring along that old
sweatshirt/gloves/torn sweat pants that yourpartner has been telling you to trash. If you donot have any clothing that is ready to discard,go to a thrift or second hand shop and buy asweatshirt or warm clothes that you can use forthe first two to three miles. You can wear theseclothes while you’re waiting
for the starting gun in the yard and you can’tmove much to keep warm. Once you’ve havecompleted the first two to three miles, yourbody will begin to generate heat and you canpull off the extra clothes. Most marathons
donate discarded clothesto charities.
Similarly, layers ofclothing are the keywhile you are running.Remember that youwill heat as you go inthe race so havinglayers that can beremoved easily willhelp keep you cool.
HEATHeat is one of the most
difficult elements as run-ning a marathon is con-cerned, so it is important toprepare as best as possible. Itrequires additional fluids andelectrolytes in the days leadingup to the race. If you can, makea “Slushy” (freeze Gatorade orsimiliar the night before the
race) and take it with yourace morning. Recentresearch has shown thattaking something cold, like a slushy, 10 minutesbefore the race helpedmaintain low body tem-peratures and allowedrunners to compete 20percent more than if
you only take a cool drink.Besides that, adjust your pace the first mile or
so to make sure you have enough energy to fin-ish strong. You see how temperature affects thepace with Calculator Runners Connect.http://tiny.cc/s7maby.
Running a marathon is difficult under any cir-cumstances. By being prepared, you can preventthe factors that affect your race.

Therefore, when there is not a marked bike lane and you are ridingwith others, you should consider riding single file especially whenyou are aware of approaching vehicles, rather than next to anoth-er bicyclist, since the bicyclist on the left would not be as closeto the right as practicable and potentially obstructing the lane formotor vehicles. This suggestion depends on the many factors likeroad width and traffic conditions.
Be forewarned, if you’re hit by a car while riding in the middleof the lane, the insurance adjuster will argue the bicyclist was atfault. Their argument is that a reasonable person would not ridein the middle of the lane because a bicycle is inconspicuous sincemotorists’ interests, expectations and experiences vary.
Also, mixing an overtaking faster car with a slower bicycle(with limited speed capability) is inherently dangerous.
Thus, the bicyclist case value should be reduced by the percent-age of responsibility.
However, when you are riding on a one-way street or roadway, you may ride as close to the left-hand curb or edge of the roadway(Vehicle Code §21202(b)). It should go without saying, you mustalways ride the same direction of traffic; however, once in awhile, I see a bicyclist riding against traffic which is extremely
dangerous particularly since motorists are not expecting this andincreases the chance of a collision.
Since a bicyclist is subject to the same local laws as a motorist,a bicycle – just like a motor vehicle – should not be ridden on asidewalk. Some counties have enacted ordinances against this.Again, motorists do not expect to see you on the sidewalk.Further, you may be cited with a traffic violation for riding on thesidewalk.
Consequently, the keys to safe bicycling include being pre-dictable, visible, and communicating your intentions tomotorists. The use of bright clothes and LED lights will increasethe probability a motorist will see you. Ride like you are invisi-ble. Obeying the rules of the roadway helps ensure the safety ofbicyclists, builds positive bicycle – motorist community relations, and protects your legal rights in a collision.

Race season is upon us and, let’s face it,even though we are lucky enough to livein San Diego, sometimes we need to varyour training location. The challenging partcan be finding a place with good roads forriding, places to swim and decent runningtrails. Oh, and it would be nice if it all camewith a view of some sort and lodging optionsthat, per night, won’t exceed most race entryfees.
The Monkey Tree Hotel in Palm Springs is a new, somewhatlocal option that opened this February. The owners, Kathy andGary Friedle, are East Coast transplants and athletes themselveswho understand the unique demands of traveling while train-
