If you were in Boston for the 2013 race, whatwas your experience?Laurie Kearney: We were on our way to meetmy parents at California Pizza Kitchen whenwe noticed an unusual number of ambu-lances screaming by. When we got to thePrudential Center, there was a cop in SWATgear preventing anyone from entering thebuilding. We ducked into the first opendoor, which happened to be 5 NapkinBurger, where we learned of the bomb-ings. We were able to meet up with myparents, and had lunch, while our cellphones were exploding with texts fromfriends & family asking if we were ok.

Steve Tally: Although I had finished aboutan hour before the bombs went off, we wereheading back over to just south of the finishline to watch people finish. We were closeenough to the second bomb to be pretty shookup in 2013. Got to see the smoke, panic, anduncertainty. Then while in lockdown in the gen-eral area for the next few hours, I got to see alot of the emotional aftermath.

Kim Weibel: Boston 2013 was my first Boston. After falling short twice, my third try was thecharm, and I was thrilled to have finally quali-fied.

A little too eager, over training resulted in aserious injury just two months before race day.Fortunately, the injury that kept me at a slowerpace also kept me safely behind the finish linewhen tragedy struck that afternoon. It was

almostsurreal to be stopped soclose to the Boylston Street finish line, but whatimpressed me most were the many spectatorsand fellow runners who offered their supportwhile we stood waiting to find out what hadhappened. One person offered his phone so thatI could call my family to tell them I was safe.People brought pitchers of water from theirhomes along streets where we were stopped, while others offered trash liners, and even jack-ets for warmth.

Despite the tragedy, the Boston I experiencedthat day was kind, courageous and strong. Myfriends and I flew home saddened by the horrorsof terrorism, but grateful for the good, the

heart, and the courage we saw in the people ofBoston.

Craig Zelent: The bombs went off at 2:50pmlocal time. We were in our hotel room 500meters from the finish line at the time and hadno idea anything had happened. We started ourwalk to meet up with Laurie’s parents at3:15pm. For 15 minutes we were really con-fused by all the sirensand ambulances out-side. Finally at 3:30pmwe ducked inside arestaurant and saw the“Breaking News –Boston MarathonBombing” on the tele-vision ticker. I’ll neverforget that moment

Why did you enterthe 2014 BostonMarathon?Bob Babbit: I didn’trun the 2013Boston Marathon, but it was impor-tant to me to breakout the Elvis outfit and be at the starting linefor the 2014 edition. Folks in the Tri Club mightnot realize it, but Dave McGillivray, the longtime Boston Marathon Race Director, did thethird ever Ironman Triathlon back in 1980 whenthere were only 108 of us on the starting lineat Ala Moana Beach in Oahu. Besides being anamazing athlete who was shooting for his 42ndconsecutive finish at Boston, he had the weightof the world on him as he and his team set outto put on what some in the media called ’The

most Important Marathon in history,’ since itwas coming on the heels of the 2013 event.

Tracy Cohen-Peranteau: When Deb Hoffmancontacted Lianne Chu and me about joining herto run the Boston Marathon in 2014, I knewthat was exactly what I needed to do, to sharein Boston’s healing, after the bombings. Weneeded to stand strong, to give Boston back to

the runners, to be united as a running

community. Deb creat-ed, “I Run For You” shirts for us to wear. Mynon-runner friends share "Girls’ Weekends” inVegas, in Palm Springs, at the spa. My girl-friends go to Boston and run a marathon.

Kye Gilder: After turning 40, the 2014 BostonMarathon was on my bucket list. I told myselftwo marathons (qualify for Boston and thenBoston) and I’d never run a marathon again. The marathon that I qualified at in 2013 wasjust four weeks after the bombing. I had been

registered for this qualifier for 6 months, prior to the 2013 BostonMarathon tragedy. The incentive and motivation to run a solid qualify-ing time was significantly increased knowing how special and memo-rable the 2014 marathon would be.

Brannen Henn: After the bombing in 2013, I decided I needed to goback. I love to run, and I needed to go back to pay tribute to thosewho lost their lives, to those who were injured and to those who wereaffected by the events. I entered because I wanted to show that peo-ple cannot take away the experience the Boston Marathon gives us. Iwanted to show how strong the running community is and with tragicevents we just get stronger.

Laurie Kearney: That’s a no brainer. It is one of my main life goals torun Boston & RnR San Diego every year for the rest of my life. A littlebombing isn’t going to deter me! I was impressed with how manyfriends suddenly wanted to run to show support for the race & the city.

Bessy Leszynski: I wanted to achieve a challenging physical goalbefore I turned 30. When my husband qualified for the 2014 BostonMarathon in early 2013, he asked me if I would try to qualify for thesame year, and we could run it together. That motivated me to train/runmy first marathon in June 2013 and qualified with six minutes to spareon a very tough Rock n Roll San Diego course. We got to share the expe-rience together, and that was incredible.

Roger Leszynski: The difficulty to get in, but the bonus that me andBessy have an opportunity to visit family and friends. By chance themcheering in the crowd they participated with us.

Bruce Meister: I never had a desire to run Boston, nor do I think I evercould qualify, maybe the two are linked. Up until 2011, I had run fivemarathons, with my best time 3:54 and my average finish time 4:35 soI really had little chance to qualify. In 2011 I tried to qualify andmissed by five plus minutes the first time and 15+ minutes the secondtime. I felt Boston was out of my reach, but with Ironman training Iwas getting faster and learning how to train. I was becoming moreengaged in the running community. After the bombing I was glued tothe TV and Facebook as I had more than a dozen friends who were there. Most had finished well before the bombs went off, a couple had beenre-routed, but all were OK. After that bombing, something clicked. Itwas still a distant event, but it was somewhat more personal. If thiscould happen at Boston it could happen at New York, Chicago or anypublic event. At that point I decided to train and try for Boston. I wasworking with Mike Plumb training for IM Lake Placid and asked if wecould fit in a marathon to qualify for Boston. We targeted three races;Mtn2Beach, Newport Marathon, and Vancouver Marathon. In five weeks,we ramped up the mileage and luckily on the first try at Mtn2Beach Iqualified with room to spare.

Dean Sprague: I return to Boston every time I age up to the next fiveyear age group. 2014, just happened to be my year, so I‘ve been plan-ning for four years.

Laura Sasaki: It was important to me to honor the racers and specta-tors that were at the race in 2013. There were countless heroes thathelped the spectators who suffered horrific injuries. I had the opportu-

nity to see a few of the injured spectators atthe CAF Triathlon in October. They, alongwith the others who were injured, are alsoheroes for the steps they have taken andcontinue to take to recover, both physicallyand mentally.

I also felt it was important to honor thesport of running. The racing field and crowdswere overwhelming! The event truly showedthe running community and the world thatnothing can or will change our love for thesport!

Les Shibata: After what happened at the2013 Boston Marathon I knew I wanted to goback in 2014 and support the residents inBoston get back to their new normal and runthe Marathon as one.

Mike Stange: The easy answer to why Idecided to race is because I had earned aqualifier. I grew up in Western Massachusetts, and the race is an opportunity for me to visitfamily and run in my favorite road race. Thereason I had earned a qualifier was becauseof how I felt after the attack on the finishline last year. I felt that I needed to be there.

Within a week Ihad targeted aqualifying race(Foot Traffic Flatin Portland, OR)and startedbuilding mileage- first to 60miles-per-weekfor Foot Traffic, then 85+ forC a l i f o r n i aInternationalin December. Iran every dayfor the betterpart of 18 weeks(needless to say my swimming and bikingwere a little neglected).

After showing up unfit and flaming out inthe inferno of 2012, walking most of the wayfrom Wellesley to the Back Bay, I wasn’tabout to let that happen again this year. I

was going to do whatever I could to preparemyself to honor the victims and the City andrun Boston Strong this year. I raced local halfmarathons and 15K’s. I practiced Bikramyoga. I started a 30-day core challenge inMarch. I tapered. On the morning of April21st, I showed up at the starting line inHopkinton, ready to race.

Steve Tally: Kris and I had already decided bythe time we got on the plane to go home thatwe needed to go next year just to experiencewhat we knew was going to be a huge sym-bolic event. It would also serve as some niceclosure for us, but mostly we wanted to be apart of what we knew was going to be amomentous occasion.

Kim Weibel: Several months after the tragedyof the 2013 Boston Marathon, the BAA(Boston Athletic Administration) announcedthat runners not allowed to cross the finishline in 2013 were invited back to race in2014. Having been stopped just before cross-ing the finish line in 2013, I was thrilled tobe able to go back to race again. And what ayear it would be!

Craig Zelent: I was injured and missedparticipating inthe 2013 race. Ihad done the race11 times and sortof felt like thatmight be enough. But the night ofthe bombing Idecided I had to goback for 2014. If theBoston Marathonhad grown to be oldhat for me prior to2013, it is not any-more. The bombingshave rejuvenated my

resolve to do the race formany years to come. 2013 reminded me neverto take these things for granted.

What were some of your lasting memoriesfrom the 2014 race?Kosuke Amano: It’s hard to even begin to

choose.Describing this experienceis like having to describe acolor in words. I don’tthink it can be done. It’sbeen close to a month andI still catch myself lookingback and thinking, "didthat really happen?" WhatI can say is that it issomething I will close myeyes and look back on50-60 years from nowand be taken back by theatmosphere, the energy, passion and emotionsthat surrounded thisevent.

It was something I will tell my kids and grandkids (if I end up having any) about. And I’ll tellthem how special the whole experience was, from the events leading up to the race, theplane ride, the expo, the day of the race to thepost race celebration. I will tell them aboutrunning past the cheering motorcyclists at themotorcycle bar, the Wellesley College girls, thepeople who lived along the course handing outwater cups and nutrition and the rows and rowsof people cheering for us runners throughout

the 26.2 miles. From the cheering (probablydrunk) college guys to the little kids holdingout their hands for a high five, I will tell themhow my arms got tired from all the love I gotfrom the crowd. For that one moment in time, runners, motorcyclists, college guys and gals, families and everyone else involved, we were alltogether. We were all there for the same rea-son.

I will tell them that when I was walkingback to the hotel after the race, on three sep-arate occasions, random people stopped meto say great job and “Thank you for running”.“Thank you for running”... We should bethanking YOU. You are the reason why we asrunners were able to run and do what wedo. It was the organizers, the volunteers, the police and security and everyone else

involved thatmade it possi-ble for us run-ners to go outthere and dowhat we love todo. This wasone race wherethe non-racers -the organizers, the supporters, the city ofBoston, and thesmall towns alongthe way gave asmuch and morefor the race thanthe runners did.

I will tell themabout Meb. Andhow he became the

first American male winner of theBoston marathon since 1983. I’ll tell themabout Rick and Dick Hoyt, coming back to fin-ish their last Boston marathon.

I will tell them about the friends I got toexperience this memory with and new friends Imet along the way. I’ll tell them about Brannenand her family taking me in as one of their ownfor the whole weekend and about the ride up tothe start with the Tri Club people. I will tell themabout the good wishes, the emails and congrat-ulations notes I received from so many people.Even from friends I have not seen or talked toin years. This was an experience I will cherishfor the rest of my life.

Yep, years and years from now, while sittingon my anti-gravity rocking chair, I will tellthem a story

about April 21, 2014, the day we took backthat finish line.

Bob Babbit: What I noticed on race day wasthat the crowds along the way were bigger thanever, before and the bond between the runners, the spectators and the entire city of Bostonwas stronger than ever before. Terrorists hadtried to scare us away from living our lives tothe fullest and, as Dave McGillivray said so elo-

quently at a Saturday night partytwo nights before the race, “theymessed with the wrong group ofpeople.”

Our Challenged AthletesFoundation, which is based in SanDiego, had a huge impact as well. After the bombings, CAF immedi-ately reached out to the familiesof those affected and offered tohelp. Seven of those peopleinjured joined us in October atour CAF Running Clinic atHarvard; five were flown to SanDiego for last year’s San DiegoTriathlon Challenge weekendand Celeste Corcoran, wholost both legs in the explo-

When you add in theimpact CAF had on the survivorsand the awesome job DaveMcGillivray and his team did withthe whole world watching, it wasthe most incredible 26.2 mile jour-ney of my life.

CONVERSATION, continuedBoston their city back. And to give themarathon runners their race back.

As I neared the finish line, I stopped toacknowledge the two memorials that were setup at each of the two bombing spots onBoylston Street. Through my tears, I said aprayer for the four lives lost (please do not for-get the police officer who was shot), the 280+victims who were physical-ly injured, and the thou-sands of victims whoendured emotional andmental injury due to thistragedy.

Boston Marathon2014 wasn’t a race forme. It was a historicalevent in our runningcommunity, which Ifeel blessed and hon-ored to have experi-enced. Meb winningwas the icing on thecake. I couldn’t bemore proud.

Kye Gilder: Thespectators and therunners – theywere incredible! It was 26.2 milesof non-stopenergy, encouragement, andsportsmanship. A truly memorable day for run-ners, Boston, and United States! Despite notfeeling well during the race and having the sin-gle worse run of my life I’m tempted to runagain.

Brannen Henn I was there for five days withfriends and family, and the entire time was filledwith smiles and a “buzz“ that ran through me. Ienjoyed everything about the weekend andbeing able to be a part of it. I don’t think youcould ask for a better experience...surroundedby people who love me, racing one of the mosthistorical, elite marathons, paying tribute tothose who were affected by the tragic events of2013, being cheered on by over a million spec-tators, having an American win the race andcrossing the finish with a huge smile on my

face. I don’t think there is one specific lastingmemory since the entire five days was filledwith memories I will never forget.

Laurie Kearney: Boston is always an amazingexperience, from the flight from LAX (alwaysfilled with runners, usually a mention from thepilot) to the people on the T who always com-ment about our Boston jackets with all theyears we’ve run, to most of all the thousands of

spectators who line the coursegiving out everything from kiss-

es (Craig!) to hi-fives, toTwizzlers & Popsicles.Although my cousin who livesin a Boston suburb said she isafraid to bring her kids intothe city on Marathon weekend, thousands of other parentswere obviously more coura-geous, as I saw hundreds ofstrollers and little kids along theroute. The high point was Mebwinning the race. Being a SanDiegan, and “old” for an eliterunner, his winning felt like oneof our friends had won the race.

Dean Sprague: Boston is a specialrace any year. This year, I started ina later corral so I was able to seethe masses of runners way in frontof me. I usually start events close tothe starting line thus miss this per-spective. There was still plenty of

room to maneuver and run without tripping overpeople, but the sheer magnitude and volumewas a unique experience this time.

Bessy Lewinsky: Meeting with TCSD pre-race toexchange stories and motivate each other forthe event. The EXPO was disgustingly crowdedand the aisles weren’t ready for it, so I wasn’tmotivated to buy anything. The Athlete Village, since it was just for runners participating, wassuch a friendly place. On the buses, in theporta-potty line, and walking to the corrals, itwas easy to start conversations, and that helpedrelax me. Unfortunately, one of my memories isnot having a memory photo at the finish line.I’m incredibly disappointed that even at a tinywomen’s running event there’s huge photo ban-

Roger Leszynski finishing strong.

ners and photographers afterwards, and therewere NONE at the Boston Marathon. Ridiculousto me. So Roger & I don’t have a finisher phototogether for our 2nd year married goal; I guessthe swag will have to do.

Roger Leszynski: The people, who come out forsuch a long and uneventful race, the supportthey give you is like no other. I am not sure Ihave even seen a soccer stadium so full of peo-ple. And, of course, thanks to your organizedsocial meet ups, I don’t think this experiencecould be any more perfect

Bruce Meister: I felt the race was incrediblywell organized; best organized race I have beeninvolved in. I got to watch the 1 mile memori-al event, that was pretty touching as some folkswho were injured in 2013 ran the last mile ofthe race. I passed the Hoyt’s at mile 11 andstopped to take their picture. The crowds weregreat. Shouting in their Boston accidents ”yougot this“, ”keep going”. It was just a really greatand well organized event.

Dan Powell: Over the top fantastic!! My bodytingled like listening to the National Anthem, but it tingled for three and one half hours. Iwatched the race from Brookline until a CAFathlete named Jeff stopped in front of me, bentover in obvious pain. I jumped in to help him

and ran the last 2.2 miles with him, keepinghim company, getting him water, leading thecrowd in cheers for him. It was fantastic! Somuch love from the crowd, one big lovefest!!

Laura Sasaki: The entire event will be foreverembedded in my mind. The energy from thebeginning to the end of the race was over thetop. The spectators and volunteers were unbe-lievable! The event was extremely emotional. Iam so grateful I had the opportunity to partic-ipate in the race.

I also had a wonderful time exploring Bostonwith Darrell. We loved the sightseeing! It trulywas a memorable trip!

Les Shibata: Lasting memories from the 2014race include waiting in those extra long lines atthe packet pick up and pre race pasta dinner.Getting a hand made scarf in Boston colors froma church in Boston. Watching the survivor onemile run. Going to the new Nike store andwatching people run on a treadmill to raisemoney for CAF. The 2013 Boston Marathonexhibit in the Boston library and reading all thestories of the 2013 bombing. CONVERSATION, continuedrace day supporting us as we ran the Marathon and being able toshare my passion with my wife.

Mike Stange: My takeaways from this year will be running the first15 miles with a friend and enjoying the energy of the crowd. Somuch of the race itself is a blur, but I’ll remember making it tothe top of Heartbreak Hill feeling surprisingly fresh (then feelingsurprisingly unfresh less than one mile later, running down thebackside of Heartbreak into Brookline). I’ll remember the under-pass at Mass. Ave with 1K to go. The right on Hereford. And, ofcourse, the left on Boylston. I’ll remember seeing my aunt anduncle on the right-hand side, in that last stretch, with their “GoMike!” sign that they drag around to races, year after year.Although there was still about a quarter of a mile left to run, thatreally felt like my finish line.

I was expecting this year to feel different - an emotional jour-ney, perhaps. But for me it wasn’t. Maybe it’s because I wasn’tthere last year, but for me it really just felt like a return to nor-malcy. Closure. It felt like running the Boston Marathon again -just bigger, better. Sure there was added security, but there’salways a police presence in Boston. This year, there just seemed

to be more of everything - runners, spectators, security. It all feltnatural. We were all there for a purpose. I know that there aremany still dealing with scars from the events of 2013, but I swearit was almost like we saw a city heal before our own eyes. Peoplewere happy, celebrating.

This race was for the victims and their families, our supportcrews and the City of Boston. It was for those who weren’t ableto finish what they started last year. I was just honored to beinvited back to do my small part and run the race. It is an expe-rience that I will remember for a very long time.

Steve Tally: We had so many memories from this year that it ishard to even choose just a few. The spirit and feel of the entirecity of Boston made the largest impact. They managed to makeover 30,000 marathoners all feel like celebrities. Having so manyfriends from TCSD to share it with also made it very special. Oneof the finest and most memorable parts about the entire day wasthe ride out to the start line on the special TCSD shuttle that youand Laurie arranged. What a great way to share the start of a greatday with friends. The race itself held so many memorablemoments. I have run Boston a couple times previously, and

although thecheering alongthe route isalways special, this was a 26.2mile parade andparty. The supportand energy fromthe spectators wasincredible. When Icrossed the finish, for the first time inmy entire athleticcareer, I was actuallychoked up. And rightabout then I foundout from the announc-er that Meb won the men’s race. Could it getany better?

Tu Tran: Lasting memories from the race werethe people of Boston. They thanked us forcoming out this year to run. Their spirit, atti-tude, and hospitality I’ll never forget.

I remember making the observation that theextra security personnel wasn’t neededbecause the people of Boston displayed theattitude that nothing was going to happenthis year and that everyone was being vigi-lant. Truly inspiring.

Lastly, the amazing turnout of people andtheir cheering was truly epic. Nearly every sin-gle mile that could be spectated from wasfilled with people cheering the entire time.”Marathon Monday” is an event every runnershould experience.

Kim Weibel: An injury kept me from crossingthe finish line in 2013, and I was excited tobe able to return injury free, and ready torace. My experience there was so much morethan I expected. The streets of Boston wereoverflowing with people, They were full ofpositive energy and ready to celebrate victoryat the Boston Marathon 2014. Spectatorslined the race course chanting “BostonStrong” and “U-S-A!” They slapped my handswith such enthusiasm as I ran past them thatby mile 14, my arms and shoulders were sorefrom all their encouragement! When I reachedthe spot on the road where I was forced tostop last year when the bomb went off, Icouldn’t help but pick up my pace, just want-

ing to get past it andcloser to that finish line.

Crossing the finishline was incredible thatday, but the thing thatI will treasure most, even more than myfinishers medal, is ascarf that was givento me at The OldSouth Church duringthe “Blessing of theAthletes” the daybefore. The scarfwas one of thou-

sands hand made by peopleacross the country. They were knit out of blueand yellow yarn (the colors of Boston), andmade to be given to marathon runners affect-ed by the bombing of 2013. Each scarf had atag attached to it displaying the name andhome town of the person who made it. The tagread, “This scarf is interwoven with love andcourage.” Mine was made by Dawn Marshfield,of Massachusetts, USA. I thought of who shemight be and why she was inspired to knitthat scarf. Walking the streets of Boston, Isaw scarves adorning the necks of hundreds ofrunners, and every scarf still bore its tag. Eachone a symbol of community and strength andcourage.

Boston 2013 and 2014. Both, I will neverforget.

Craig Zelent: The 2014 race was one of thebest days of my life. I had a good race, but myexperience was never going to be about racingfast. We took back the finish line! Everyonefrom the spectators to the volunteers to therunners seemed to have a vested interest inmaking this race successful.

The race went by wicked fast. It seemed toend in the blink of an eye. It was an absolute-ly gorgeous day. God definitely shined Hislight on Boston on this day. Some of myfavorite memories include passing the Hoyt’sat mile eight – it’s always so good to seethem. I also had some favorite signs beingheld up by the Wellesley College women: “Kissme! I am Sweet Caroline!” and “Kiss me, I’mperformance enhancing!”

Pre-race sightseeing, Laura Sasaki and Darrell Steele.

a busy parent andtriathlete I am

always looking for ways tomaximize my time. Somedays I just can’t get to thegym or that coveted naptimeis just a time for me to get some peace andquite. I need to answer emails and get on face-book at some point, right? I know for me I des-perately need that workout time during the day.It helps me find my balance, but some days Ijust can’t away to get that workout in. Here aresome ways I have found to incorporate mydaughter into my workouts.

Use a baby carrier. Do stairs. Want an amaz-ing back side? Well, doing stairs is a great wayto achieve that (ex. I would go up one step ata time for 5 rounds then start skipping steps foranother 5 rounds. I would repeat 4 to 5 moretimes depending on how long I had to workout). I also made up an “at home” workout thatincorporated my daughter in the baby carrier(the added weight is enough to get a goodsweat going).

A stroller + a pair of resistance bands is allyou need to get a good workout until you can

exercise without restrictions. Here is an exam-ple workout: Run .25 to 1 mile, do push-ups,resistance band curls, or lunges and then runanother distance. Repeat for a certain numberof miles or for time. I usually do this at LakeMiramar since it is a 5 mile loop.

Take a family walk! As parents we know thatsometimes taking a walk can be a little taxingespecially if you have a toddler, but you canmake it fun. Hop sidewalk lines. Have a fartlekwalk (who doesn’t love that word. I bet yourchild will think it’s hilarious) Take a breatherand just take a long walk. Who doesn’t need anactive recovery?

My favorite is working out at the park whilemy daughter plays. If you have an older childtake advantage of the park structures. Pull ups, push ups, obstacle course racing, and leg pump-ing on the swings are all good ways to get agood sweat. I personally map out a circuit

workout and do a couple of rounds. I usually geta couple of children who follow my movements,so have fun. If you have a younger child, takeadvantage of tummy time or them just beingable to sit up and do some yoga at the park.Getting outside can brighten your mood in as lit-tle as 20 minutes.

Find classes that allow you to bring your childwith you. Some YMCAs and local yoga studiosallow you to bring your children to class withyou. It’s a great way to introduce your child toexercise along with getting a good workout your-self.

Let them help you work out. If you’ve neverbeen in awe of the perfect squat or push up formthat your children have then you’ve been miss-

ing out. Plus, a good laugh is not only good forthe soul, but it can take a lot of stress out ofyour life. We all know added stress can lead toweight gain. Let them sit on your back or lay onthe floor while you do push-ups. They could evenhelp you count. It’s a win-win situation.Learning and working out. Now, that’s a goodbang for you buck.

Last, but not least, just have fun with them.Stretch while you read to them or just go outsideand have a blast. You can always do sit ups orpush ups while you are outside, plus all of thatrunning has to be doing something, right? Howdo they just keep going?

I hope y’all like my fun little list of ways toincorporate your child into your workouts.

CONVERSATION, continued

It was great that Meb won the race. That seemed to be theicing on the cake. Meb was so eloquent in all his post race inter-views. He said all the right things. He understood the moment. But the best part for me was walking back to my hotel after therace. I just listened. It sounded like Boston should sound. Therewere no sirens. It was the best sound I’ve ever heard. We wereback to normal.

the twenty dollars to pay for his share of gas for driving to atriathlon out of town. Laurie gave Marco the twenty dollars fortuning her bike. Marco bet Nolan twenty dollars he could beathim as king of the mountain on a weekend ride—and lost thebet and the twenty-dollar bill Laurie had given him.

Nolan put the money in his drawer, waiting for the rightopportunity to spend his winnings. He had met someone new atthe pool named Annabelle. She was a little pudgy but cute, andshe seemed determined to swim laps although she struggled. Heworked up the nerve to ask her out for dinner. He gave the wait-er, Owen, the twenty-dollar bill to pay for the meal.

Owen gave his neighbor, Peter, the twenty bucks for a windtrainer he was unloading at a garage sale. Peter got massagesfor a running injury and paid Quentin the twenty-dollar bill forten extra minutes. Peter liked arriving early for his massagesbecause a cute woman named Annabelle had appointments therethe same time as his, and they chatted in the waiting room.

Quentin handed over the twenty dollars to Roberta at atriathlon store to fix the broken zipper on his wet suit. Robertabought her daughter her first racing swim suit, handing theclerk, Sandy, the twenty-dollar bill. Sandy gave his wife, Tina, the twenty dollars to buy herself something nice. Tina took thebill, along with cash from the cookie jar, and bought a nice pairof running shoes at the shop of her friend, Ursula.

Ursula’s husband, Vern, wanted to make their shoe businessgrow. Ursula gave him the twenty bucks from the till and sug-gested he find signed pictures and posters of local pros to hangin the shop. Vern gave the twenty dollars to Willy, a youngtriathlete who wanted to turn pro, to track down the pictures.“Here’s your first pro income,” he told Willy.

A few weeks later Willy got his first real sponsorship contract. To celebrate, he gave the twenty dollars from Vern to his UncleXavier, a high school track coach who had spent untold hourshelping Willy. “Use this to help someone else.”

The following weekend, Xavier and his daughter, Yolanda, watched Willy race in a triathlon. As they walked around the

expo after the race, Yolanda found a book abouttraining for triathlons. It was written by a formerpro named Zeke, who sat behind the table in thebooth.

“If you follow my program, you’ll have guaran-teed success or your money back,” Zeke toldYolanda.

“I’d like to buy it,” she said. Xavier opened his wallet and gave Yolanda the

twenty-dollar bill, which she handed it to Zeke.A moment after they walked away, Annabelle

approached the booth and picked up a copy of thebook. “I bought this book you wrote, but I didn’tdo very well at all in today’s race.”

Zeke extended his hand still holding the twen-ty-dollar bill. “Do you want your money back?”

She shook her head.“Did you follow the program?”“Well, I started to. But I guess I lost some

motivation. Everyone I’ve met is a lot faster andstronger than me.”

Zeke opened a copy of his book to the secondpage. “It says here to find others who run and rideat your pace and distance to help you maintainyour motivation.”

“I know, but I’m a slug, and it’s hard to findother slugs like me. Some of your goals in theworkouts are beyond my ability. You say to swima lap in under a minute, wait until the clock hitsthe minute mark, and then swim another lap.

Well, it takes me almost two minutes to swim onelap, so I never get to rest. I end up doing all mytraining by myself. Maybe I wasn’t cut out to be atriathlete.”

“Don’t say that. This town is full of triathletesof all speeds. You know, I need to rewrite thebook for slower athletes. I’ll tell you what. I’lltake you to lunch after the expo. You can describeto me your training so I can guide you better. I’llhelp you train, and you’ll help me with the nextedition.”

“Well, I don’t know….”“If you feel you failed today, then I failed to

teach you. The buck stops here.” He tapped hischest with his thumb. “My training program willhelp you learn everything you need from A to Z,like Annabelle to Zeke.” He placed the twenty dol-lars on the table. “This is yours for now. You canpay me when you’re satisfied with your next race.”

She picked up the limp bill. “This twenty-dollarbill has seen more mileage than me. Okay, I’llmeet you here in an hour for lunch.”

As she stepped away from the booth, a littleweight lifted from her mind. ‘None of those otherguys really regard me as an athlete, only as achick. Maybe Zeke is the real deal.’ She turnedaround to look back at him. ‘How did he know myname is Annabelle?’ She shook her head andsmiled. ‘A to Z, or Z to A?’
