Hello, my name is Fred Whitaker and I am a triath- lete, choco- holic and part time bungee jumper. I started late in life in the sport of triathlon just like I started late in life with my Navy career. I served 20 years active duty and retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Looking for another chal- lenge in life I joined the Triathlon Club of San Diego in the fall of 2006. Soon afterwards I was going underway at sea in the hull of the USS XTERRA (Full suit) and training with the Seals at La Jolla Cove. I registered for the Silver Strand Half Marathon and a few fairly chilly Club races at Fiesta Island. Most impor- tantly I was introduced to the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) and super people like Jonathan Jefferson. JJ gave his all to help others. Yes, we are absorbed in our sport, but we give so much to our community. In 2007 I found myself running in the Carlsbad, La Jolla, and America’s Finest City half marathons and the San Diego Rock n Roll Marathon. I also continued with club races (including duathlon’s and aquathlon’s). My first KOZ Enterprise race was the Spring Sprint in May. I was very excited, and as a result, gradually made it through the shock of hyperventilating at the 50 meter point of the swim, but I started to relax the remaining part of the race. I was hooked on a race t h a t included three sports. I continued to race KOZ sprint triathlons, and eventually as the months and years passed, I registered for the San Diego Triathlon Classic, Chula Vista Challenge, California 70.3, Wildflower 70.3, Hawaii 70.3, Super Frog 70.3, Redman Half Ironman distance in Oklahoma City, Las Vega Half Marathon(wearing my Elvis Costume), Marine Corp Marathon, NYC Marathon and the Disneyland Dumbo Challenge. In 2008, I requested to become a security vol- unteer for the 2008 World Ironman Championship in Kona, Hawaii. My first triathlon: A TCSDBeginner’s Triathlon on CoronadoIsland on July 14, 2012.

Favorite segment (swim, bike orrun): Depends on where my cur-rent strength lies. It used to berunning and now it’s the bike. Ichanged my swim stroke andbreathing to a high-elbow catchwith bilateral breathing after the2014 triathlon season. Perhapsin a couple of years, my swimwill be my favorite segment.

This year’s athletic goal:Qualifying for the USAT YouthElite National Championships, fighting in the USA TaekwondoNational Championships, and rac-ing at the USA Cycling AmateurRoad National Championships.

My triathlon “A” race for 2015 is the National Qualifier inWashington State (Monroe YouthElite Cup in June).

Biggest weaknes: I’m allergic tograss and tree. Cross countryraces usually kill me becausemost of these races are in apark.

Biggest strength: My legs. I canhammer on the bike and the run.

Most embarrassing or disastrousmoment: I was able to avoid abig disaster/disqualificationwhen I almost biked only oneloop instead of two loops at the2014 Chula Vista Challenge(brain fart). I started back, wasalmost immediately waved offand told to turn around. Iturned around, finished bothloops, still had the fastest bikesplit in my age division and wonfirst place in my division.

Can’t race without: guess I have tosay my dad. I was on theTriJunior team for a few months. Now, my dad coaches me most ofthe time, especially in the off-season. I am currently on theSan Diego Bicycle Club juniorteam and plan on bike racing alot in 2015. I will probably jointhe San Diego Waves youth trackclub and race in some USATFtrack meets in 2015. Craig: What was your athleticbackground before your became an adult? Richard: My parents encouraged us to play mul-tiple sports and were really involved at manylevels. I am not sure there was a time when wewere not playing a sport. We played football andbaseball, and I branched out in high school andadded wrestling, soccer, golf and even threw thediscus and shot put. Baseball was really myfavorite sport as a youth.

Craig: What is the tale of the tape? Howmuch did you weigh at your peak and whatweight have you settled into?

Richard: Sadly,my highest weight wasjust over 340 poundswhich included a 52”waist. Today I try tostay around 185pounds and a 33/34”waist.

What do you do for a living, and did that lead

to your weight gain? Richard: I would like to blame my IT career formy weight but my issue is that I am a food loverand a workaholic. Being on call all the time leadsto long hours and poor eating habits, and withmy ability to eat just about anything, it reallydid not help. It is so easy to just plod alongthrough life focused on work and family andwithout any real exercise.

What inspired you to change your lifestyle?Richard: It started with a doctor that was sofocused on my weight and trying to make mebelieve I was a diabetic instead of just over-weight. She went so far as to enroll me in a pro-

gram even after I did three months of testingand never was in any range showing I was adiabetic.

I did start to work on my eating habits andexercise, but the real change came when mywife started training for her first triathlon. Icould not walk a mile without knee pain butwould walk with her and walk the block by ourhouse as she cycled and ran. Then I got a bikeso I could ride with her as she continued totrain. I wanted her to have someone that couldbe there with her on her workouts. It just kindof steam rolled from there.

What were some of the key componentsthat led to your successful weight loss andnewfound health? Richard: It was actually a few items thatreally kept me on track.

First, I had not eaten a regular breakfastsince starting high school. This was one of myfirst changes, but it took me a while to find afew items I could eat that also helped me kick-start the rest of my day.

I also started actually watching and record-ing what I ate. Most people say this is hard, but it really isn’t, and it really helps you under-stand what actually goes in your mouth. Thereare a few really good tools out there that arefree and work on multiple platforms, whichallow you to record your input from anywhere.I used a tool that worked on my iPhone called“My Plate”.

The last item was finding enjoyment in exer-cise. Before starting this process, I broke a

sweat getting my shoes on. Working out withmy wife I found enjoyment in doing thesethree separate events and actually makingsome goals in the process. I had no idea thatthis would lead to me doing a triathlon andeven running.

Did anything nearly derail your efforts? Ifso, how did you overcome those obsta-cles? Richard: I have had knee issues since I was ateenager. As I started working out, the weightwas an obstacle but the knee swelling reallywas an issue. I went to several doctors whowould drain the knee but often they would tellme to stop doing what I was doing since it wasthe cause of my issues. I was losing weight soI was not going to stop doing what I wasdoing, but it was discouraging.

We found a doctor who was sports mindedand he actually looked at me, learned aboutwhat I was doing and was the first one to say, keep it up, but maybe it is time to focus onother muscles. He actually pointed out that Ihad to do more than just pedal my bike andrun. What a concept!

Over the last six years, the knee issues sub-sided as I got lighter and stronger and becamemore aware of my body. I still have little issueson and off, but I no longer have major issuesand appreciate that I was able to continue tomove towards my goals and lose the weight.

Your wife Lisa really played a key role inyour success. Not only in helping to getyou out the door to exercise, but also by

continuing to love you during the journey. Is she the bestwife ever? Richard: I can’t say enough how much Lisa has meant to me. Shehas supported and encouraged me even when I was discouragedand not the best person. Often she has done this by giving up hertime, and that had an impact of her goalsand desires.

We have had several journeys in our 24-year marriage that shouldhave really broken us and yet she kept everything together. It isso easy to get sucked in to the machine of life and what is nextwith work and home and so on.

Often people say you two are so lucky that you can do thistogether. I used to find this as an odd comment, but today I getwhat people are saying. I have had the benefit of a wonderfulwoman in my life and now we get to do things togethe,r especiallyas our children grow-up and become adults. It is enjoyable to dothis together and learn more about each other along the way. Ican’t wait to see what the rest of these years we have togetherbring. There are some destination events we are really looking for-ward to doing in the near future.

What race performances are you the most proud of? Richard: My first timed event was the Wildflower long course. Idefinitely had no idea what I was doing. I had never run a trailand had never run a half-marathon either. I finished this event, and when I got to the finish chute, I was hooked. It only took mea couple of hours to decide I wanted to do this again.

I would like to say that my first Ironman finish was my momentbut it wasn’t and only led me to want more.

The real moment was watching my wife finish Ironman Arizonain 2013. It was an epic day for so many reasons, but being there

supporting her was hook number two for me and really tookthis whole thing to a new level. I can’t wait for this year’sevent to get here as she signed up again and I look forward tothis next journey.

What are some of your favorite destination events? Richard: Leadman in Bend, Oregon, was absolutely a destina-tion event not only for the location but the race was handledso well. It is one of the events we want to do again.

I would love to do Wildflower again just to see how far Ihave come and compare the experience. I would have to do itwithout camping this time since that is part of the experiencethe family did not really enjoy.

We are now looking at events that we can do togetherincluding Ironman Chattanooga and Ironman Barcelona.

In what areas have you served as a volunteer for theTCSD? Richard: I joined TCSD in 2009 before doing any events andanswered an email about some tech help for the club andshowed up to help. I have been helping somewhere ever since.I tried to do several things early on by helping at the eventswith timing, setup and tear down, but as the training pickedup, it was harder and harder to help out in those areas and stillget those longer training days done. Of course, I still fit inother volunteer efforts at local events too. Helping on thewebsite and in the digital arena really fit my schedule, and Ihave been doing that ever since.

Today, I do website administration and manage the workoutcalendar, help moderate TSCD Yahoo groups and then assist onFacebook. I also work on covering race discounts and postthem for members on the website. In 2014, I joined with afriend (Jim Richardson) to co-lead a running group at LakeMiramar. It really was a great way to help manage some newrunning goals and grow the training partner group. It has beena blast.

I did decide to do more this year and ran for a club officebut was not successful at getting a seat but look forward tocontinuing to assist and hopefully run for another seat if timeallows the next time they are open.

Beyond your TCSD job, what is your triathlon relatedmission? Richard: I want to show people it can be done. It takes work, but it can be done and it can be fun. You can get outside, enjoy working out with others and even eat. Yes, you canwatch your weight and eat too. It really gets easier when youfind something you enjoy doing. It helps that we have a greatgroup in TCSD and as you are out there in your gear, you hear“GO TCSD”; what a motivator.

WhatTCSD member would you like to

single out as someone you really admire? Richard: A few people came to mind here, including many training partners and otherswho have supported me along the way. So manygood choices, but I have to say Gerry Formansticks out for me. He embodies that TCSD spiritand, of course, is always encouraging. We couldbe in a deep conversation during a run, figuringout some odd world issue, and he wouldacknowledge others, stop and pet a dog, sayhello to people and still continue on like noth-ing happened.

Too often we just go about our workouts andthis really showed a different side of theprocess. It has had a big impact on me and, ofcourse, I find myself saying hello during a work-out while passing others and I really enjoy thefeedback. Now if I can just figure out how he

remembers so many names. I have met a lot of people in

this journey over the last sixyears but I learned a fewthings from him and not justabout the sport. I know a lotof people say “I want to bedoing this when I am his age”and of course that would begreat but I think what stuckout to me most is hisengagement with others notjust the ladies and the dogs.

What are your future triathlongoals?Richard: I want to continue to do the 140.6races (not focused on a brand but the distance).I want to start doing other courses outside mycomfort zone. It is time to start going further toraces than I can drive in a day. Yes, you heardright. So far, we have driven to all our raceseven Bend, Oregon. We have some destinationgoals like Barcelona Spain, and I really want todo a 50-mile run soon. This opens up the coursechoices, now we just need to pick a new venueor two and work towards the goal.

Richard, the obstacles you have overcomealready are very impressive. Thank you forsharing your story Your family, the TCSDand our local community are lucky to haveyou as a great example of all that is possi-ble. Additionally, Iwas assigned as acatcher but, I tooktime to be a specta-tor with my cow belland thunder sticks atthe ready to cheer onthe winner. Here cameCraig Alexander with150 meters to go, so Istretched out my handfor a high five. He alsostretched out his armbut we missed the highfive by a few inches.

After seeing Craig winI went to fulfill myassignment as finish linecatcher. I caught severalpeople along with theonly person I knew in the race: our very own MikeDrury (co-owner of Pulse and HT Bikes.)

My next task was to guard the NBC camera but

my most memorablemoment came, as a resultof being asked to be thefinish line Security personfrom 8 pm to midnight. In front of me wasour very own BobBabbitt with the CAFChampion, and to myright stood CraigAlexander and ChrissieWellington. I took myball cap off and Craigsigned it for me.

As a result of allthese great experi-ences in Kona, I madethe decision to racein a future Ironman

event. I requested to bea security volunteer at the 2009 Ironman Arizonain Tempe.

Again, I performed the requested securityduties all day in Tempe and then found myself

own Tracy Cohen-

Peranteau finish her first Ironman race as herkids were nearby waiting just outside athletefinisher picture area. The hours continued topass, and it was just after 11 pm and the crowdbecame increasingly loud and excited. The nameRudy (Rudy Garcia-Tolson) echoed throughout. Isaw numerous cameramen start to move evencloser. It was getting crowded, and I began towonder where Bob Babbitt was when he magi-cally appeared to my right. It was crazy, and thecrowd was ignited when Rudy came down thelast 60 meters. Big hug for Rudy from Bob. I felthonored to just be there. That moment, Rudybecame the first double above-knee amputee tofinish an IronmanTriathlon.

I registered for the2010 IM Arizona thenext day while inTempe. I raced in theMarine Corp Marathonin October 2010, andthat November Idrove my truck toTempe for the chal-lenge of my life. That morning I posi-tioned myself beforethe swim start inthe front rowtogether with 3,000plus athletes. Iknew this was notthe recommended

area for a below average swimmer. My goal wasto go out fast and try to avoid the crowd. Theguy next to me asked if I was competing for a

podium spot, and I told himthat finishing would be greatfor me.

Much later in the race I wasall alone in the dark on therun course throwing up. Iwalked up a hill and saw anofficial. I asked her how muchfarther to the finish line. Shetold me it was over 3.5 milesand mentioned that if I didn’tstart running I would not be anIronman. I started running andknew I needed to find some-body to run with, so I

approached the first person I could see who wasstill in the race. The person I approached was aphysical trainer from Phoenix. I told him whatthe official said and he told me to follow himand to not stop running no matter how much ithurt. It hurt a lot but I could see the lights andhear the music, fans, and Mike Riley.

I turned the last corner and somebody in thecrowd yelled “Fred!” I almost jumped out of mybody and sprinted to the finish line. Mike Rileycalled me an Ironman with eight minutes tospare. I felt I had won the Super Bowl and aGold medal at the Olympics. But even better Iwas an Ironman! Incredible!!

In March 2011 I wasdoing bike training atFiesta Island when Ireceived a phone call. Istopped my bikemomentarily thinking itwas a call from mydaughter. It was mydoctor at Balboa. Hetold me I had cancer. Iasked “Can I still ride myHarley, race in triathlonsand drink beer?” He saidI could but that I neededto make a decision con-cerning the cancer.Eventually I told him Iwould like have the sur-gery in June, three days

after my next triathlon, which was the Hawaii70.3.

After the swim in Kona I opted not to put suntanlotion on so after the race when all the ink cameoff there was a very clear no. 121 on bothshoulders. The dayafter the roboticassist surgery wasperformed six doc-tors walked into myroom. One femaledoctor said, “I justhave to ask you, whydo you have thoseno.’s on your shoul-ders?” I assured herthat I was not a pris-oner and proceededto tell her the story.

The recovery fromthe surgery was goingto take some time so Icancelled all my racesexcept the 2011Ironman Arizona. Iwent on to race the2011 IM Arizona withgreat emotion, and to this date I completed it withmy best finish time for an Ironman. As always, thefinish line was electric and this one was very emo-tional for me.

In 2012 I registered for three Ironman racesstarting with IM New Zealand. As I searched onlinefor lodging and answers to all the overseas logis-tics involved I found Ken Glah’s Endurance SportsTravel and have traveled via his company eversince.

In 2011 I became aware of the annual CysticFibrosis Cycle for Life bike ride in San Diego andwas introduced to Nick Kelchner, who is currently15 years old and has been living with CF for many

years. The annual bike ridehelps the Cystic FibrosisFoundation raise moneyfor a much needed cure ofthis disease. The charityfor the 2012 IM NewZealand was CysticFibrosis. The CysticFibrosis Association ofNew Zealand sent me anemail and asked if Iwanted to have a CFbuddie while in NewZealand.

I start to email DavidDonahue from theStates. David is fromWellington and hasbeen through the manystruggles of CF from avery young age up tillthe present. He is now

in his 20’s. David still lovesIronman races and is a great Rugby fan. As aresult, I went there to race and also to support acure for CF.

The day before the race there was a huge stormthat came in from Australia, so the race waschanged to a 70.3.

I also meet the Ironman legend, Tony Jackson, who completed 28 Ironman New Zealand races. Itwas going to be his last race due to health reasons.Coming into the finish line I could see David, and

he presented me with the medal. It wouldn’t bethe last time I would see David as the full Ironmandistance in New Zealand was in my plans for thefuture. After the race I traveled with Ken Glah andothers throughout the North Island of NewZealand. It was so much funand an unforgettable experi-ence. I went to Auckland anddecided to do a baseline jumpoff the tallest building in theSouthern Hemisphere, theSky Tower. I made sure I did-n’t eat a big lunch that day.It was fun.

In June of that year, Iraced in IronmanSwitzerland, which islocated in Zurich. I am nota strong swimmer, so as Iwas coming out of thewater with the last groupof athletes the announc-

er said “Fred Whitaker from San Diego, CA!” Thenhe began to announce and express with greatemotion that San Diego was the birth place oftriathlon. There is no change tent in this race so,I momentarily found myself in my birthday suit(not a good site) and then off to a super challeng-

ing. My arms were white, and myglasses were fogging up. I wasstruggling so much on the secondloop that I was actually escortedvia two motorcycles out of themountains and into Zurich. I stillfinished the bike portion withinthe time limit, and amazinglythe fans in Zurich still cheeredas I came around the lake. I didnot complete the run, but littledid I know that my Switzerlandadventure was still going to bea really exciting experience.

The following day I traveledwith Ken Glah and others to Lucerne, Switzerland, for din-ner and site seeing. The next morning I went by train to a placecalled “Top of Zurich”. I had my camera and Go Pro so I was takingit all in and capturing the view.

As I started to walk back to the train it dawned on me that Ihad no pictures of myself at that location so I had no evidence toshow that I had really been there. I guess I should have taken aselfie. I walked back and saw three men on mountain bikes (two

former Swiss Army Officers and an Italian). Iasked them if they would take a pic-ture of me, and afterwards theyasked me what I was doing in Zurich.I was invited to drink beer at a smallcafé at the Top of Zurich. They point-ed to a mountain in the distance andsaid that on the other side was thelocation for production of the veryfamous Swiss Army knives. They weregoing to the Alps in that area the nextday on a hiking route they had neverbeen on and asked if I would like togo. They questioned if I still had theenergy to hike all day in the Alps. Isaid yes. Thirteen hours of adventurous

and fairly dangerous hiking all on video. My next race was the 2012 IM Arizona. As you can see none of

my stories are short but I can simply say I don’t plan to finish latein an IM race but this one was too close for comfort. The daybefore the race I was talking with Sarah Reinertsen (first femaleabove knee amputee to complete Ironman Hawaii) and told her Iwas wearing my old school CAF jersey on the run. At the closing

miles of the Ironman run course Sarah was going in to the finishand shouted out some encouragement to me as I was still goingout with several miles to go. Eventually I finished with 3:30 tospare.

The finish is captured on this video link. http://tiny.cc/rdub-wx.

This video also includes three ladies of whom one finished withthree seconds to spare. It’s worth watching, especially the last30 seconds. You will see me in the first part of the video as MikeRiley exclaims “60 years young, Fred Whitaker, you are anIronman!”

In 2013 I decided to try the very first IM events located in LosCabos, Mexico, and Lake Tahoe. I made it half way through thebike course in Cabo and was stopped at mile 88 in Lake Tahoebecause I didn’t make the cutoff time. There was a highlight forme in 2013 as I was able to register for the NYC Marathon witha donation to CAF. Those of us racing for CAF met for lunch atthe Hard Rock Café in Times Square and enjoyed listening toSarah Reinertsen speak. Racing through the five boroughs of NewYork was incredible in addition to finishing the race in CentralPark.

2014 was very exciting as my early race in March was the 30thIronman New Zealand. One week before the race I sprained myankle and it turned black and blue. I was very disappointed butrelied on my daughter to tape it before my flight. She will grad-uate next year with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training fromPoint Loma Nazarene University.

Upon my arrival in Taupo, New Zealand, I asked Ken Glah whowould be able help me with my injured ankle. He recommendedan Active Release Techniques (ART) specialist so the possibilityof racing the Ironman was looking better each day.

I came out of the water with my best swim time and was justhoping that the ankle would hold up as I ran up the green carpetwhich was a long distance to T1. I was going to be O.K. I saw myCF buddie David as he cheered me on coming out on my bike.

It was very windy that day but had my best bike time. I toldthe volunteer’s at the completion of the bike course that I need-ed to leave my shoes on the bike because I might re-sprain myankle if I popped out. As normal the run started off awkward butI finished the Ironman with 28 minutes to spare. The next day Itraveled south to Queenstown. There I enjoyed a really coolbungee jump from the location of the original bungee and alsodid some sky diving, water rafting and experience the worldfamous Shotover Jet boat ride. Mostly likely I had been listeningto took much of Eddie Van Halen’s “Jump”. The next week I didanother bungee jump off the Auckland Bridge.

Finally in July 2014 I traveled to my next race, which wasIronman Austria located in Klagenfurt. Absolutely incrediblescenery from the swim, through the bike course and the run. Iwas struggling on the second loop of the bike as the hills got to

me and I was worried I would not make the cut-off. I was hammering as fast as I could go,which did exhausted me. I also found myselfstruggling on the run. With four miles, to go Iwas feeling the rain, see lightening and hearingthunder. I just couldn’t run so I tried to walkfast.

With one mile to go, I had seven Austrianswalking with me and encouraging me to keepgoing no matter what. I came around the cornerand the cheer leaders and fans were still thereeven though the finish line clock was off and nocameramen were in the area. They still called mean Ironman and presented me the finisher medaleven though it was three minutes after mid-night. I was so tired that I lay down on the wetconcrete. Minutes later two Ironman staff per-sonnel said somebody wanted to see me. I putmy arms up so they could pick me up and I satdown on a wooden bench. Next to me was IvanRana the winner of the 2014 Ironman Austria. He just wanted to see how I was doing. We

talked for ten minutes and then a cameramancame around and took several pictures of us. Inever was able to find a copy of those picturesbut would like to get them someday.

The next day I traveled with Ken Glah toFrankfurt, Germany, because part of my vacationplan was to be a spectator at the IM EuropeanChampionship. Wow! That was also exciting. Ihad a very educational experience as I traveledto Munich and also had a great boat trip downthe Rhine River. I was able to take video ofnumerous castles and also participated in a winetasting tour. I was introduced to ice wine whichis now my favorite but more expensive thanmost.

My 2015 IM races will start with IronmanTexas, which is this year’s North AmericanChampionship. Ben Hoffman (second place fin-isher at the 2014 Ironman World Championship)will be there racing. I don’t expect to keep upwith him but do hope to see him at the finishline, which as always is my goal.

I will be 63 years old theday before the race. InNovember I will go toPanama City Beach forIronman Florida. As you cantell I love to travel and race.I will continue this pace asmy goal is to get into theLegacy Lottery and have theopportunity to race in Konaat the World Championship.I will get in much bettershape and truly believe mybest years are in front of meas a triathlete.

Favorite Thing(s) About TCSD: The free beginner races (I stilldo them), beginner bike rides, and the fun of having competi-tion and spirit at every race. Ireally enjoyed racing in the clubs2014 40th Anniversary ofTriathlon race on Fiesta Island, but the run, bike, swim, run really zapped me.
