SeniorNews LineSometimes the key to getting a senior discount is just getting up the nerve to ask for one. If we get in the habit of asking for a discount every single time we spend money, think how much we could save.Someone on the Internet has compiled a long list of stores that give discounts to seniors. You can find that list by going to Google.com and searching for “106 Stores with Senior Discounts.” There’s even a handy .PDF version you can print out to make sure you don’t miss anything! Categories include Restaurants, Retail and Apparel, Grocery, Travel, Activities and Entertainment, Cell Phones and Miscellaneous. Not only is the amount of the discount noted (either the percentage of the total purchase or a dollar amount), but the day of the week or date during the month, as well as the age it applies to. Some consider us seniors at the age of 50, while others go with age 55, 62 or 65.If you’re a member of AARP, there are dozens of discounts built right into the membership. On the Web site [www.aarp.org] click on Member Benefits, then

Discounts. To name just two of the new discounts, Walgreens offers savings if you show your card, and Michaels has discounts on Tuesdays. There are 15,000 restaurant locations that offer discounts, and travel discounts can be found on car rentals, hotels, cruises and tours. Seniors Discounts [www.seniordiscounts.com] has more than 150,000 businesses listed that give discounts to seniors. There is a fee, however, either $7.95 or $12.95 per year, depending on the level of services you want. Start carrying your AARP card in your pocket! Remember to use the plastic one with the magnetic strip and bar code on the back.

consider signing up to be a fiduciary in your area?It won’t be easy, I’ll tell you right up front. It’s not even easy for relatives to be appointed fiduciaries for a loved one’s estate. You’ll no doubt be run through the wringer when you apply.Once you’re assigned a veteran to assist, you’ll need to qualify (and pay for) a surety bond equal to a veteran’s current and estimated future benefits. You’ll be responsible for keeping his or her bills paid on time, opening a joint account in your names and completing frequent documents to describe how you’ve spent each penny of the veteran’s money. If you’re interested in at least thinking about doing this to help out a fellow veteran, go online to www.vba.va.gov/bln/21/Fiduciary/index.htm. Then hunt for “Fiduciary Forms Program Guide.” This reference describes what goes in each and every box on every form that a fiduciary fills out.Fiduciaries are asked to serve for free, but there is a small stipend that can be earned — a percentage of the veteran’s benefit.

Fiduciary ScamI’m trying to wrap my mind around this one: Another fiduciary scam has been uncovered. The two men who plead guilty are the fiduciary and a former Department of Veterans Affairs Field Examiner who had been appointed by the VA.Over nine years, beginning in 1999, the two managed to steal nearly $900,000 from 10 disabled veterans. As a fiduciary, the first man was responsible for the financial affairs of those veterans. The second was the overseer of fiduciaries in his area. Are you a member of a service organization, perhaps the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars? Do you serve in an elected capacity, perhaps as Adjutant or Finance Officer? Can you pay bills on time? Are you good with math? Would you

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) As tensions ease on the home front, you can once more focus on changes in the workplace. Early difficulties are soon worked out. Stability returns as adjustments are made.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new romance tests the unattached Bovine’s patience to the limit. But Venus still rules the Taurean heart, so expect to find yourself trying hard to make this relationship work.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s a good time to consider home-related purchases. But shop around carefully for the best price — whether it’s a new house for the family or a new hose for the garden.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A contentious family member seems intent on creating problems. Best advice: Avoid stepping in until you know more about the origins of this domestic disagreement.LEO (July 23 to August 22) A recent job-related move proves far more successful than you could have imagined. Look for continued beneficial fallout. Even your critics have something nice to say.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Ease up and stop driving yourself to finish that project on a deadline that is no longer realistic. Your superiors will be open to requests for an extension. Ask for it.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You should soon be hearing some positive feedback on that recent business move. An old family problem recurs, but this time you’ll know how to handle it better.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprising statements shed light on the problem that caused that once-warm relationship to cool off. Use this newly won knowledge to help turn things around.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your spiritual side is especially strong at this time. Let it guide you into deeper contemplation of aspects about yourself that you’d like to understand better.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your merrier aspect continues to dominate and to attract folks who rarely see this side of you. Some serious new romancing could develop out of all this cheeriness.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’re always concerned about the well-being of others. It’s time you put some of that concern into your own health situation, especially where it involves nutrition.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Just when you thought your life had finally stabilized, along comes another change that needs to be addressed. Someone you trust can help you deal with it successfully.YOU BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sixth sense when it comes to finding people who need help long before they think of asking for it. And you’re right there to provide it.

His college roommate also went on to great things. That person was Al Gore, later to become vice president under President Bill Clinton. In his free time, Jones is a San Antonio Spurs fan. Of Cherokee ancestry, he also is fluent in Spanish. D Country singer Patsy Cline accomplished much in her short five-and-a-half year career. Born Virginia Patterson Hensley, she was a Grand Ole Opry star at age 26 and the No. 1 female artist at 29. Her recording of “I Fall to Pieces” was Song of the Year for 1962. She initially disliked what has become her signature song, “Crazy,” written by fellow country artist Willie Nelson. Cline was nearly killed in a head-on collision in 1961 and cheated death for just one more year. At age 30, she was killed in a plane crash in a Tennessee forest. “Patsy Cline’s Greatest Hits” was released four years after her death and has sold 10 million copies worldwide. She’s number 46 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.”D In 1965, Lesley Hornby was regularly in the camera’s eye, one of the world’s first famous teenage models. Weighing in at only 91 pounds (41 kg) on a 5-foot, 6-inch (1.68 m) frame, her ultra-thin body earned her the name of “Twiggy.” She achieved her wide-eyed look with three layers of false eyelashes. D More than 11,000 teachers applied to the NASA Teacher in Space project for a chance to become the first civilian educator in space. New Hampshire social studies teacher Christa McAuliffe was chosen

penned nearly 70 novels throughout his career. D September-born New York Yankee Roger Maris gained fame when he broke Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record in 1961. The Babe had hit 60 homers in 1927, and Maris belted out his 61st in 1961, a new record that endured until 1998. Over the course of his 12 years in the Majors, Maris played for four teams and batted in seven World Series.D Frankie Avalon didn’t set out to be a teen idol. He actually got his start playing the trumpet, recording “Trumpet Sorrento” in 1954 at age 15. His 1959 tune “Venus” firmly cemented him as a singing star, spending five weeks in the No. 1 spot on the charts. He joined up with Annette Funicello in the 1960s for a series of beach movies, such as “Beach Party” and

GoinG orGanicOrganic food often comes with a hefty price. It is possible, however, to find food that’s good for us at a cost that isn’t going to break the bank. The first step is to learn the differences between “100 percent organic,” “organic” and “70 percent organic.” Go online to www.usda.gov and put “National Organic Program” in the search box. Look for “Understanding Organic.” Decide how to spend your food money to give your family the best health benefit for the dollar. If you can bake your own breads, then you might want to limit your organic shopping to fruits and vegetables that you can’t grow. Or if you can grow those, but can’t have chickens, spend your money there. There’s an online list, sometimes called The Dirty Dozen, of 12 foods that have high rates of pesticide contamination, even after being washed: Nectarines, Celery, Pears, Peaches, Apples, Cherries, Strawberries, Imported Grapes, Spinach, Potatoes, Bell Peppers and Red Raspberries. Consider spending your money on organic versions of those, instead of the thicker-skinned fruits and vegetables that have a lower rate of pesticides: Asparagus, Avocados, Bananas, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Corn, Kiwi, Mangoes, Onions, Papaya, Pineapples and Sweet Peas. Buy in-season. See what’s at the store or market, and plan your menus around the organic foods that are available.Check out Local Harvest [www.localharvest.org] and put in your ZIP code for farmers markets and community supported agriculture (CSA) farms near you. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, many of these markets carry meats, baked goods, herbs and organic teas. Ask before you buy: Even if a farmer doesn’t yet have his official “organic” certification, it could well be that he’s in the process of doing so and hasn’t sprayed any pesticides. Buy pasta, nuts and dried fruit in bulk if you have a means of storage. Use your freezer to store other foods.Shop around and compare prices between CSAs, farmers markets, co-ops, buying clubs and your grocery store. If necessary, take it one step at a time as you learn which items you can leave out of your standard menu and replace with organic choices.Ask for discounts, even at a farmers market, especially if buying in bulk. The benefit to you in moving toward organic? The food you put on your table tonight might have been picked a few miles away this morning.

to be a part of the January 1986 flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger and was scheduled to teach two lessons to her classes from space. Just 73 seconds into the flight, the craft exploded, the result of a failure of rubber O-rings. D Even if you’ve never heard the name Edgar Rice Burroughs, you’ve undoubtedly seen his creation. Beginning in 1912, Burroughs published 26 novels about jungle hero Tarzan of the Apes. He began writing the stories the previous year after struggling to make ends meet on his salary as a pencil sharpener salesman. Within a few years, he had purchased a large ranch north of Los Angeles and appropriately named it Tarzana. The community that grew up around the ranch goes by that name today. Even though it was Tarzan that brought the fame, Burroughs

A Little Personal Space, PleaseBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read a recent column of yours where an owner said her cat tended to scratch and nip at her without warning. You said that the cat might have some socialization problems due to being a shelter pet, or might be experiencing some stress. Could I add that cats that are perfectly “normal” and loving also will scratch or nip if they are surprised or feel otherwise threatened. It’s natural. — Cat Fan in ChicagoDEAR CAT FAN: You’re right; many cats will turn and scratch or nip when surprised. Others will bat or scratch at strangers or even family members who reach out to them. Why? Well, like humans, cats have varying levels of “personal space,” so to speak. And because they’re fiercely independent, many have specific likes and dislikes — opinions that can vary from family member to family member. It’s important to approach a cat, or any animal, with respect. Never sneak up behind or grab at a cat, and don’t yell or

make loud noises. Approach from an angle where it can see you clearly, and speak in a calm, reassuring voice. Hold out your hand for inspection, and let the cat come to you. It’s possible to figure out the most important signals just from this move. If it sniffs at your hand, rubs its whiskers against it and backs away, the cat’s not interested in being picked up or petted at the moment. If it approaches you after rubbing its whiskers against your hand, you’re welcome to pet it. If it allows you to gently pick it up and doesn’t struggle, great. If it jumps into your lap, you belong to it (just kidding — sort of!).

Window ReflectionsOne way to prevent birds from flying into

windows is to place strips of tape or streaks of soap at least 1-inch wide and 10 inches apart

on the outside of your window. Vertical works best. This helps break up the reflection, and

birds are less likely to hit the glass.

My parents claim that as an infant I was always moving my cradle to music. But it wasn’t until years later when I’d reached the tender age of two that Cecelia Vaughn officially opened up the world of dance to me in the late 40s. Madame Vaughn, a great teacher of tap and ballet, ran her own dance school in Charleston. For twelve years, I worked under the tutelage of this fine lady. And there were other influences. “Tutti Fruiti” still haunts my memory. How many hours I must have spent be-bopping to the sounds of Little Richard on my RCA 45 RPM record player! When I started teaching ballroom and shag in high school, it was clear that movement and music were in my soul. So, I guess it’s not surprising that here I am, still dancin’ after all these years. My lifetime of dance led me into a very satisfactory career. I get

immense gratification from teaching others to dance, especially as a means to better fitness. Not only is dancing, in all its various forms, good for your heart (aerobically) and muscles (toning, stretching and strengthening), it’s great for the soul and gets you “in tune” with your body. Learn about the way your body moves and be cognitive of the power of dance. This awareness will help your overall fitness and body image. You don’t need to be a perfect dancer. It should be fun! Just join a class, buy some tapes or find a dance club. Dance styles like ballroom, shag, swing, tap, clogging, modern jazz, etc., are primarily practiced for fun, but the extra rewards you reap are innumerable. What better way to meet people, liven up your spirit and share fun with a loved one than through the primal art of dance? If you, like many others, abhor a structured exercise routine, dancing is for you. Fun, frivolous, fantastic…just moving to the music can soothe and/or excite the soul.Ouch! I just stepped on a toe! Oh well, we’re here to have fun, so forget the pain and keep on dancin’.

SEPTEMBER BABIES (continued):“Beach Blanket Bingo.” Avalon remains married to a former beauty pageant winner he wed 48 years ago, and the couple has eight children. D Generations of children have benefited from the wisdom of Stan Berenstain and his wife Jan, who together penned more than 300 Berenstain Bears books. The series of children’s stories address a variety of difficulties faced by parents, including teaching children about strangers, tantrums in public places, visiting the dentist and homework hassles. Stan got his start drawing cartoons for magazines and progressed into children’s literature after the birth of his son Leo.

D We know Alison Sweeney as the lovely host of television’s “The Biggest Loser,” a position she’s held since 2007. But her longest-running role is that of Samantha Brady on the daytime drama “Days of our Lives,” a role she has had since the age of 16, one that has earned her four Soap Opera Digest awards. Her first gig was in a Kodak ad at the age of five. She’s married to a California highway patrol officer who once had a guest spot on “Days.” D Mike Post has made his living composing music for several television programs. If you’ve ever watched “The Rockford Files,” “Hill Street Blues,” “L.A. Law,” “Law and Order,” “Magnum P.I.” or “NYPD Blue,” you’ve heard this September baby’s work.

Atypical Year for The MasterThis hasn’t been a typical year for Jimmie Johnson…yet.Johnson, who will turn 36 on Sept. 17, has won 54 Sprint

Cup races since he became a series regular in 2002. Then there’s the matter of five championships. The last five. This year Johnson has won once. The Pure Michigan 400 marked only his second runner-up finish. On the other hand, Johnson, who grew up in El Cajon, Calif., ranks second in the point standings, and in his five championship seasons, he has never led the points at the end of the regular season, which is now just three races away.“I’m very interested to see how this Chase goes,” he said. “I think it’s the hardest one to predict. It’s going to be a close one. I don’t know who to make the favorite. We’ll just have to see how everybody responds to pressure when it really kicks up.”Johnson may not know whom to make the favorite, but it seems a bit absurd to pick anyone but…him. After all, no one else has ever won five straight championships at NASCAR’s premier level. He could use a victory or two in the final three regular-season races, but his consistency to this point does

rank him second, and consistency is important in the Chase.Johnson was unable to hold off Kyle Busch at Michigan International Speedway, one of few tracks where he has never won. Afterward, he said his only regret was “not winning.”“I had every opportunity handed to me,” he added.

“(Crew chief) Chad (Knaus) made an awesome call to get me to pit road before the (next to last) caution (flag) came out. I had a second shot (after the final caution) at (Busch) on the restart and didn’t have enough to get by.“No excuses. I just wasn’t able to get him today.”Naturally, Johnson will rely on his experience in the Chase.“You’re going to be tested in all areas,” he said. “We all have weaknesses, and we all have strengths.

“Really, the bottom line is being strong or adequate in your weakest areas, and raising that part up so your average is high enough to perform. …It’s really about withstanding pressure in all areas.”

WACKY WARNINGSIn this day of frequent lawsuits, manufacturers are making sure they have all their bases

covered. In their attempt to shield consumers from injury, they list some rather bizarre safety precautions. This week, we bring you some actual warnings found on a variety of products.

➤ Boxes of Christmas lights were distributed with the counsel, “For indoor or outdoor use only.” The question is, what other kind of use is there?➤ Even though it seems to be the purpose of pepper spray, the warning on one brand of this self-defense item reads, “May irritate eyes.” The same goes for the advisory on a popular nighttime sleep aid: “Warning, may cause drowsiness.” ➤ Fishermen, try to avoid the temptation to ingest your three-prong hooked fishing lure, because, after all, it’s “harmful if swallowed.” ➤ You probably won’t be tempted to disobey the warning found on one electronic thermometer: “Do not use orally after using rectally.” Similarly, one well-known brand of toilet brush directs, “Do not use for personal hygiene.” Don’t worry! Most folks won’t even think of it!➤ Do-it-yourselfers, beware! You are advised not to use a 12-inch compact disk storage rack as a ladder. Likewise, your electric drill might carry the warning found on one manufacturer’s brand, “This product not intended for use as a dental drill.” And if you haven’t read the owner’s manual for your chainsaw, you may have missed the admonition, “Do not attempt to stop the blade with your hand.” ➤ The wrapper of a popular fruit roll-up states, “Remove plastic before eating.” You’d think it would just taste better that way!➤ In case you’re trying to take care of all your pets at the same time, one brand of dog shampoo has a label informing users, “The contents of this bottle should not

be fed to fish.” ➤ We’ve all been in a hurry in the morning, and perhaps that’s what prompted the warning on a popular household iron, “Never iron clothes while they are being worn.” And by all means, follow the precautions on your hair dryer, “Do not use in shower. Never use while sleeping.” ➤ The next time you take your little one out for a ride in the stroller, you might want to read the label on the contraption that states, “Caution, remove baby before folding stroller.” ➤ If you recall the winter days of your childhood, perhaps the words of warning on a snow sled ring true: “Beware, sled may develop high speed under certain snow conditions.” ➤ Bicyclists and roller-bladers should be aware of the hazards associated with shin guards —“Shin pads cannot protect any part of the body they do not cover.” That seems to make sense!➤ Not that you planned to, but the next time you’re changing the cartridge in your laser printer, “Do not eat toner.” ➤ The warning label on a certain children’s cold medicine is designed to ensure that its 6- to 12-year-old users don’t operate any heavy machinery because this product can cause drowsiness. These youngsters should also consult a health professional before use if they’re pregnant. ➤ Be advised when choosing your child’s superhero costume for Halloween as, “This cape does not give the wearer the ability to fly.”

cleaninG up “ruSty” concrete

QUESTION: My concrete driveway has several bright-orange stains that look like rust. How did this happen, and how can I clean it up? — Jane C., Winter Park, Fla.ANSWER: There are several ways that rust finds its way onto concrete to stain it: a metal tool left sitting on the driveway in the rain, rust washing off of a vehicle parked on it, and so on. The good news is that most rust stains can be cleaned off of concrete fairly easily.Home-improvement stores sell an array of cleaners that specifically address rust-stained concrete. They’re generally not too expensive; simply apply and clean according to the package instructions. However, one of the most effective cleaners that will remove many rust stains is probably in your kitchen cabinet: citric acid. It can be found in the spices section of most grocery stores, typically sold as “sour salt.” Many powdered drink mixes contain citric acid, which means, in theory, that you could take a non-staining drink mix like, say, lemonade flavored Kool-Aid, mix it with a couple quarts of water, pour onto the stain, scrub with a coarse brush and rinse clean. You also can use plain white vinegar — straight up or diluted half and half with warm water — or even lemon juice to tackle rust stains. One thing you should never use to remove rust stains on concrete is bleach. It can make the problem worse. If the driveway is extensively stained, or if repeated scrubbing doesn’t clear up the problem, contact a driveway specialist. He or she will likely recommend the driveway be resurfaced and sealed to correct the problem and prevent it from happening again anytime soon. If that’s the case, ask for a written quote before agreeing to any work.HOME TIP: To prevent future rust stains, keep outdoor concrete clear of metal tools, and repair areas where water leaks or drains across the concrete, particularly from metal structures like carports or gutters.

HARD TIME FOR PLAxICO BURRESSA man we’ll call Ron Doe was convicted for a murder he did not commit when he was 34 and sentenced to hard time.Fifteen years after Doe’s conviction, his defense attorneys discovered notes from the prosecution that indicated that a chief witness in the case had made contradictory statements that helped convict him. Five years later, after a brutal court battle, Doe was released. He promptly turned around and launched a $20 million federal civil-rights lawsuit for wrongful imprisonment. He settled for $900,000 — an agreement that guarantees him $50,000 cash and payments that amount to a little more than $3,500 a month for the next 11 years — compensation that amounts to $45,000 for every year he spent behind bars.Plaxico Burress is 34. On June 6, 2011, he was released from a protective custody unit of the Oneida Correctional Facility in Rome, N.Y. That’s where he had spent two years serving out a sentence for accidentally shooting himself in the thigh with his own illegal handgun in the VIP room of a

Manhattan nightclub. And while he was released from the hospital just days later, a jury said his reckless endangerment of others was enough to convict, despite pleas for leniency. Despite the fact that he had once caught the deciding touchdown pass for the New York Giants in the greatest upset in Super Bowl history a year earlier.Plax was routinely jeered by inmates, but kept separate from the population save for his three showers a week, three hours of daily recreation and weekend visits. And those visits had to be truly heartbreaking. His wife was pregnant, and he had a 3-year-old son at the time of his conviction. While it may be hard to weep for a guy who collected a $1 million signing bonus weeks after being released by his former employers, you’ve got to feel for the kid. My 2-year-old kid wonders where daddy goes when he leaves the house. Wife tells him I’m a “newsman.” Works for him. What did Mrs. Burress tell her kid?I can’t speak for Ron Doe’s incarceration, but I’m guessing it wasn’t a cakewalk. I think it’s safe to say that since he was wrongfully convicted, the compensation probably won’t make up for the distress and two decades shorn off of his life. As for Plax? He was guilty as charged, and he did his time. And a little more than a month later, he received a one-year contract from the New York Jets worth more than $3 million. That translates into $187,500 to play toss-and-catch for 16 football games this season. Hard time…right, Plax?

Kitchen apronSQ: I have collected more than 300 vintage aprons during the past decade or so and would now like to sell the entire collection, not parting it out. What do you suggest I do? — Dianne, Sun City, Ariz.A: One of the foremost authorities of older kitchen aprons is EllynAnne Geisel, author of “The Apron Book,” published by Andrews McMeel. Recently, I spent an enjoyable afternoon visiting with her in my Arizona home. She is knowledgeable and has assured me she will help you. Her contact information is c/o Apron Memories, 605 West 17th St., Pueblo, CO 81003; [email protected], and (719) 545-5704. A second book, “The Kitchen Linens Book: Using, Sharing and Cherishing the Fabrics of Our Daily Lives,” also is highly recommended and available from Andrews McMeel.

* * *Q: I have several Reikes bears and can’t seem to find books at the library that can give me information about current values. They all have wooden faces and are numbered. Three that I have include Sebastian,

Lionel and Christopher. I do not have the original boxes. — Jim, Sun City West, Ariz.A: It has been more than a century since the first Teddy bears were manufactured in the United States. Most of the earliest ones had humps on their backs, elongated muzzles and jointed limbs. Named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt and his much publicized bear hunts in the American West, the toy bears quickly became one of this country’s favorite toys. Your bears are from a much later period, circa 1980s, and — according to several collectors I contacted — probably valued in the $50 to $75 range. As with most collectibles, the value of an item is based on rarity, condition and demand. I found your Sebastian bear listed on eBay for $55.

* * *Q: I have a book that was published during the late 1920s or early ‘30s entitled “The Child and His World.” Is it valuable? — George, Albuquerque, N.M.A: “The Child and His World” was a multi-volume set published by Midland Press in its New Human Interest Library series. Most volumes in this set sell in the $15 to $25 range, depending on condition.

z It was revered American comedian Bill Cosby who made the following sage observation: “Human beings are the only creatures that allow their children to come back home.”z Here’s a disturbing statistic for parents: If your child is like the average American youth, between the ages of 5 and 15 he or she will see approximately 13,500 people killed on television.z Most languages change dramatically over time. If we in modern America were to try to read “Beowulf” (which was written in Old English), for instance, only those who have spent time studying the language would be able to make out more than a word or two here and there. If you’re from Iceland, however, this isn’t the case; the written language there has remained virtually unchanged for more than 1,000 years. Modern Icelanders have no trouble reading sagas that were written in the 10th century.

z Relative to body size, humans — unsurprisingly — have larger brains than any other animal. Of non-human animals, it’s the bottlenose dolphin that has the largest brain.z When Great Britain’s current Queen Elizabeth — then Princess Elizabeth — wed Prince Philip, their wedding cake weighed a whopping 500 pounds.z As legend has it, in 1288, when Dusseldorf, Germany, was granted its city charter, children all over the city began turning cartwheels for joy. The cartwheel has been an enduring part of the culture there ever since, and in 1937 the city even inaugurated an annual international cartwheel championship. z Those who study such things claim that when you’re playing Monopoly, you’re likely to land on Illinois Avenue and the B&O Railroad more than on any other squares.

Thought of the Week“I always find it more difficult to say the things I mean than

the things I don’t.” — W. Somerset Maugham

Fleeing Wrong relationshipsBy Pastor Len Stubbs

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

In Matthew 18:21-35, the parable of the unforgiving servant raises an interesting dilemma for the follower of Jesus Christ. On the one hand, we are to forgive an infinite number of times — seventy times seven or actually endless times. On the other hand, there is a difference between forgiving countless times and fleeing or remaining in a difficult or even a destructive relationship. Too often we remain when we should depart.

The parable listed in this passage spells out a man who would say anything to get himself out of trouble but shows zero tolerance for others. This double standard must be addressed and if the reaction is hostile, it is time to part.

If the Body of Christ is guilty of an injustice, it is bending over backwards to “be nice” to everyone and tolerate those who constantly stir up trouble. We are to forgive them but after several tries, it is time part ways. Will you be misunderstood? Yes, but for the health of the body, it must be done.

In the above parable we see a man who was caught and begged forgiveness. The king did so the first time but after the failure of the man to do the same to others, the king “was

angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him.” (Matt 18:34 NKJV) While that parable seems harsh to our western ears, it is no more harsh than the actions of those who fail to forgive as they have been forgiven.

Forgiveness is foundational to our faith. If our heavenly Father can forgive us and forgive heinous criminals who turn to Him and forgive insurmountable injustices against Him, then we can do no less. However, there are times and situations when the offender refuses to make any attempt to change and we must part ways. Only God can change that heart and so we prayerfully leave it to Him.

“Moreover, if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.” (Matt. 18:15 NKJV)

Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

Some of the clues a declarer relies on are very thin and inconclusive. But any indication of how to play a hand is better than none at all, so regardless of how meager the clues, it is best to follow them wherever they lead. Take this case where West leads the deuce of clubs against four spades. East takes the ace and returns the club seven to the king, at which point West exits with a low heart. South wins with the ace and has to hold himself to one diamond loser. The normal play, after drawing trumps, would be to lead a low diamond to the queen, intending to finesse against the jack next. As can be seen from the diagram, this approach results in down one. But a different method of play — designed primarily to learn more about the opponents’ hands before tackling the diamonds — enables declarer to make the contract. After winning the heart at trick three and drawing three rounds of trumps, followed by three more rounds of hearts, South learns that West started with two spades, four hearts and (judging from the lead of the club deuce) four clubs. This places West with three diamonds and East with just two. The key missing card is the jack of diamonds, and, as the odds are 3-to-2 that West has it, South should adapt his play to that probability. Accordingly, at trick 10 he leads the four of diamonds to the king, planning to play another diamond toward dummy if the king wins the trick. But when the king loses to the ace and West returns a low diamond, South pursues his plan by following low from dummy and so makes the contract.
