No matter how fit we used to be, we have all experienced muscle loss over time. The syndrome didn’t have a name until the late 1980s, when a researcher at Tufts University, Irwin H. Rosenberg, discovered a pattern of muscle loss in seniors and decided it needed a name so other researchers would notice. Sarcopenia, he called it. Sarcopenia is age-related muscle loss, and it can happen even if we appear to be at the right weight. Our muscles, hidden underneath layers of fat, can diminish, and we don’t know it until we become unsteady on our feet. It can go downhill from there, like tipping over the first domino in a row: Lose muscle, become unsteady on our feet, fall, fracture a bone, lose independence, take on a sedentary lifestyle.Over time, researchers determined that muscle loss starts in our 30s. This isn’t something we should just accept, said Rosenberg. Muscle loss and the rest of the “dominoes” falling needn’t be a foregone conclusion. Researchers focused on resistance-training exercises for arms and legs to counteract the

effects of muscle loss. Using gradually heavier weights apparently allowed muscles to “wake up” and be able to handle even more weight. In other words, it’s never too late to start rebuilding muscles that have been lost through inactivity. The details of a study done at Tufts were encouraging. Frail residents of nursing homes (ages 72 to 98) doubled the strength in the exercised muscles over 10 weeks when they worked out three times a week. Some were able to give up walkers, canes or wheelchairs.A second study (women ages 50 to 70) was conducted with easier exercises and only twice a week. They also increased their muscle strength. Are you ready to join an exercise program yet?

When hiking on public lands, many times signs are up saying, “Pack it in, Pack it out,” or something similar. It is important for you to do just that. Think about your packaging of snacks, etc., and make sure you don’t leave litter behind. Here are a few estimated life expectancies for types of litter found in the backcountry: paper, 2–4 weeks; cigarette butt, 2–5 years; disposable diaper, 10–20 years; hard plastic container, 20–30 years; tin can, 80–100 years; aluminum can, 200–400 years; plastic six-pack holder, 450 years; glass bottles, many, many years. Please, “leave no trace!”

Thought of the Week“As far as the laws of mathematics refer to

reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.”

— Albert Einstein

z It was Swiss journalist and commentator Esther Dyson who made the following sage observation: “The Internet is like alcohol in some sense. It accentuates what you would do anyway. If you want to be a loner, you can be more alone. If you want to connect, it makes it easier to connect.”z The world’s largest colony of ants reaches all the way from northern Italy to Spain’s Atlantic coast.z The first U.S. patent was issued in 1790 for a soap-making formula developed by Samuel Hopkins.z In May of this year, Canadian chef Ted Reader attempted to break the Guinness record for the world’s largest hamburger. The patty alone weighed more than 300 pounds, and the bun was 105 pounds. Once the burger was decked out with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, red onions,

pickles and barbecue sauce, the grand total was a whopping 590 pounds. Guinness has not yet certified the giant hamburger, but it seems a shoe-in to beat the current record holder, which is a measly 158.8 pounds.z Hasbro’s Easy-Bake oven was so popular when it was released in 1963 that it sold a half million of the toys within the first year. z If getting out on the road these days is making you nervous, you have good reason: According to the 2010 GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test survey, approximately 38 million American drivers would fail a written drivers test — that’s 20 percent of licensed drivers. The nation’s best drivers can be found in Kansas, while the worst drivers — perhaps unsurprisingly — are in New York.

stressful right now and you just don’t want to deal with a new challenge. Shera’s behavior probably will not change during this period. But if you have the time and energy, start training Shera to stay off the furniture. It’s a matter of you being the leader of the family, and what you say goes. That means if Bubba gets to sleep on the bed and Shera doesn’t, too tough for Shera. As far as how: I’d recommend spending more time with Shera, playing or doing basic obedience training on the leash, next to the furniture she likes to jump on. When she wants to get on the couch, tug her away, have her face you and command “sit” or “lie down” and “stay.” Basically, retrain her way of thinking about the purpose of those rooms.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I should buy stock in the aluminum foil industry? My 6-year-old boxer/hound mix, Shera, will not stay off the furniture. My bed and living-room furniture are lined with aluminum foil to stop her from climbing them. I have a 14-year-old dog, Bubba, who sleeps with me at night, but never occupies the bed or furniture by day. Shera is kennel trained and sleeps in her kennel at night with the door fastened.Bubba is getting near the end, and I don’t want to take on another dog until I solve this problem with Shera. Would it be best to wait until Bubba is not sleeping with me to correct this territorial issue? — Susan W., via emailDEAR SUSAN: I don’t think this is a territorial issue so much as an issue of Shera figuring out how far to push her boundaries. Naturally, she will want to get up on the couch or the bed just like Bubba. But you don’t have to wait until Bubba is gone to start addressing Shera’s behavior. You can choose to wait — especially if taking care of Bubba is

THE GRAND CANYON (continued):this is that if you traveled from Mexico to Canada, you would see lots of variations in the ecosystem, but you can see the same variations within Grand Canyon National Park! So from desert plants to mountain trees — they’re all there! From the north rim to the canyon floor, the temperature can vary up to 35° F. (19.4°C)➤ Bears, mountain lions, weasels, bald eagles and many other animal species are found in the park. Keep in mind that Grand Canyon National Park is home to six species of rattlesnakes, including the most common Grand Canyon pink rattlesnake that blends in with the canyon terrain. If you go hiking on the many miles of trails, watch your step and listen carefully! ➤ Baby rattlers are born fully equipped with poisonous venom and teeth. They are born with a “prebutton” for the rattler that is shed with its skin making way for “buttons” that develop. Rattling occurs when they grow more buttons and shake them together — at the speed of about 60 or more times per second! ➤ Approximately 47 reptile species are found in the park. Ten are common along the Colorado River in the bottom of the canyon. Have you heard of gila monsters and chuckwallas? They are the

two largest lizards in the area.➤ The Grand Canyon Railway began as an extension of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. In 1901, the Santa Fe extended a branch to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, and hotel and restaurant developer Fred Harvey entered the scene. The Fred Harvey Company, with railroad architect Charles Whittlessey’s design expertise, built the El Tovar Hotel 20 feet (6 m) from the edge of the south rim in 1905. The beautiful, rugged building sometimes called “the most expensively constructed and appointed log house in America” is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. ➤ When automobiles became popular in the 1920s, the Santa Fe Railway lost a lot of riders. It struggled

until closing in 1968. Over the years after its closing, the park became more and more congested with vehicles. The branch line was reopened in 1991 and is operated by the Grand Canyon Railway. The nostalgic train rides are more popular than ever today. ➤ Another architectural beauty built by the Fred Harvey Company in the Grand Canyon is the Desert View Watchtower. Architect Mary Colter designed the structure to mimic an Anasazi Indian watchtower. It was dedicated in 1933 and provides an excellent view of the canyon along East Rim Drive. ➤ In 2008, a couple of “typo vigilantes” used whiteout and permanent markers to correct mistakes

Summer Art Fun For the KidS

Are the kids bored yet? Are they glued to the television or video games? There are quite a few things you can do with them over the summer without spending a lot of money.Make the rest of the summer about art, and plan to hold an art show before school starts. There are many art-themed projects you can do with the kids, and some of them even involve a little learning.Visit Goodwill or the Salvation Army (or ask on FreeCycle.org) and collect as many types of art supplies as you can find. Look for crayons, colored chalks, paper, paint, brushes and poster board. For those who want to do collages, hunt for fabric scraps and old magazines. Search out face paint, too, and partially filled cans of textured faux-finish interior paint. Save your glass jars. Here are some more ideas:• The kids might enjoy writing their own books and comic

books, complete with art and decorated covers. Start with large sheets of paper that can be folded and stitched up the crease.

• Let the kids use face paint to make the funniest/scariest faces they can, and have your budding photographer take photos to frame.

• Take a walk in a local park and collect leaves, fallen acorns and grasses for collages and mobiles. Let the kids experiment with drawing or painting or taking digital photos of nature. If you’re near a beach, collect jars of sand to make sand candles or colored sand in jars.

• Go to the library once a week. Pick out age-appropriate books on artists and let the kids practice imitating that artist’s work. Use the faux finish paint and thick cardboard to make frames.

• By the end of the summer the kids will have a whole collection of artwork and projects for their art show.

• For the show itself, string a line across the porch or between trees to hang the artwork. Let the kids design and make invitations to hand out to their friends. Invite the press, too, and use invitations designed by the kids.

• With a little bit of planning and not much cash, you can foster some good habits in the kids as you teach them to use their ingenuity to create fun instead of heading directly for the television.

Martin Truex Jr., once known for his friendship and affiliation with Dale Earnhardt Jr., is now making a name for himself

in the No. 56 Toyota of Michael Waltrip Racing. After winning the Busch (now Nationwide) Series championships in 2004 and ‘05, Truex made the step up to Sprint Cup and spent four seasons at Dale Earnhardt Inc., which eventually became Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. He made the Chase for the Sprint Cup in 2007, the year he won his only Cup race, to date, at Dover International Speedway. This year Truex has moved into Chase contention in his first season at MWR, where he has been paired with veteran crew chief Pat Tryson.“We’ve just been steady as a race team, doing all the things we need to do to get points and finish races,” said Truex. “There have been a few races where we’ve had really good cars, and a few races where we were off but still managed to get good finishes, and that’s why we’re sitting here (in Chase contention).“Pat (Tryson) and all the guys on the (sponsor)

NAPA team have done an awesome job. I feel like the last month, month and a half, we’re starting to gel and figure out our race cars, find some speed and know where to go to get that speed when we need it. I’ve been very happy with that and still continue to work on our stuff to try to get better.”

Martin Truex Jr. (left), with crew chief Pat Tryson, hopes to make an impact in his new No. 56 Toyota ride with Michael

Waltrip Racing. (Photo: John Clark/NASCAR This Week)

Truex Likes New Ride With Waltrip RacingBefore making the move to MWR and Toyota, Truex had a close relationship with his previous crew chief, Kevin “Bono” Manion, who now works with Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray. He compared Tryson with Manion.“They’re different in a lot of ways, but I wouldn’t say they’re like night and day,” said Truex. “Their personalities are a little bit different. ‘Bono’ is more quiet and kind of strict. If you do something wrong, he’ll probably yell at you.“Pat is a little more laid back, kind of likes to have fun. Both of them do a great job, obviously, and they’re both good at calling races and they both understand the race cars well. They’re different, but at the end of the day, they are both out there doing the same job, and both do it well.”

THE GRAND CANYON (continued):on a sign on the watchtower. Now, typos are annoying, and we should all strive to be grammatically correct at all times, but don’t we need to respect historic property? Yes, the two were banned from all national parks for a year, had to pay $3,035 for repairs and are banned from modifying any public signs. ➤ Many structures in Grand Canyon National Park are historic and listed on the National Historic Register. A new, modern structure was added to the park in 2007. If you are afraid of heights, this is probably not for you. But, if you really want to view the canyon as eagles see it, take a walk on the Skywalk. ➤ The Skywalk at Grand Canyon West is on the Hualapai Indian Reservation. The tribe developed the area for tourism and to expose visitors to a different area of the Grand Canyon. ➤ The Skywalk protrudes out from the canyon wall 4,000 feet (1219 m) above the canyon floor. It is designed to hold the weight of 71 747 airplanes. Cameras aren’t allowed on the walkway, and numbered shoe covers are issued to visitors to prevent scratching and slipping. ➤ Do you know who participated in the “First Walk” on the Skywalk? Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, after Neil Armstrong, on July 20, 1969. Aldrin walked out to meet Hualapai

tribal leaders and John Herrington, the only Native American astronaut. It was a pretty significant day for the tribe and a great addition to the Grand Canyon experience.➤ The Grand Canyon is a magnificent place for both a family vacation and studying nature. The

Colorado River and canyon walls are full of scientific evidence about the history of the area. Both evolutionists and creationists are intrigued with the area, and even though they disagree about life origins, they agree that the Grand Canyon is one of the most amazing natural features on earth.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please write something about bladder infections. Can you have a bladder infection with no symptoms? — A.ANSWER: The signs and symptoms of bladder infections are the same for men and women. The irritated, infected bladder demands frequent, urgent trips to the bathroom so it can be emptied. People have a burning sensation when passing urine. Pain is felt in the bladder area. Sometimes blood appears in the urine.Men have far fewer bladder infections than women. Women have a shorter urethra than men. The urethra is the tube that empties the bladder of urine. Women’s urethras open in an area that has a large bacterial population. Bacteria can ascend the female urethra without trouble. It’s harder for them to climb the male urethra. And men’s prostate glands secrete substances that have antibacterial properties. The presence of bacteria in the urine without any signs of bladder infection is called asymptomatic bacteriuria. Doctors treat pregnant women with asymptomatic bacteriuria to prevent symptoms from arising, as they often do during pregnancy. Infected urine, even without symptoms, can lower the birth weight of babies who were in the uterus during that

period.Otherwise, asymptomatic bacteriuria in women or men, at any age, usually does not require treatment. In women, bacteria in the bladder are often transiently there. They disappear many times on their own. Treatment can lead to the development of resistant bacteria and can produce side effects. Furthermore, it is costly. The guidance from most experts, therefore, is not to treat asymptomatic bacteriuria.Exceptions exist. Diabetics might benefit from treatment. The topic of urinary tract infections and their treatment are covered in the booklet on that topic.
