SeniorNews LineIf you’re not sure you’re getting all the benefits you’re entitled to, or if you assist someone who might qualify for more, there is an easy way to find out.Benefits Checkup is a National Council on Aging website that lets you hunt for information on all kinds of benefits. Whether it’s prescription costs, utilities, taxes, meals and more, you could be eligible for help. The questions might seem a bit intrusive in some areas, but that’s to help figure out where you might qualify for assistance. There’s no need to give your name, however. At the website [www.benefitscheckup.org], click on Find Benefits, then click Comprehensive. Before you begin, check the Click Here button for a list of things you’ll need to have before you start. For example, you’ll need to know all your current income and assets for you and anyone else in your home, as well as the amounts of your utilities and medical bills not covered by insurance. If you’re on prescription drugs, have those handy as you’ll be entering the names of the

medicines you take. If your spouse is a veteran, they want to know that as well, as there may be veterans benefits you’re eligible for. Be patient as you go through the questions, and answer all that apply to you.At the very end you’ll see a results overview with a list of programs you might qualify for. Each link is a description of the program, local contact information and an application form. If you like, you can print out the results or go back and change some of your answers.Give it a try! You might just qualify for benefits that you never even considered.

trying to make others believe the tales they tell.“Their stories are grandiose and wild to the point where they’re not believable,” Waterman says. “The details don’t hold up: They can’t tell you their class number, the instructor’s name or even the names of classmates, and they can become aggressive when pushed for details. And none of them use their so-called elevated status to benefit mankind; it’s all for themselves. Phonies and Fakes, the next Wave

They’ll be coming out of the woodwork now, after that magnificent covert raid by Navy SEALs on Osama bin Laden’s compound. From one end of this country to the other, fake heroes — Medal of Honor or Purple Heart, prisoner of war, Special Forces, Green Beret, a former Vietnam sniper with a million kills to his name — are working in schools, getting elected to public office, sitting in American Legion bars, walking in parades, and even collecting veterans benefits because they haven’t been discovered. Now they might claim to be a Navy SEAL.Don’t let it happen.I asked Steve Waterman, retired Navy underwater photographer and SEAL wanna-be hunter, for the general characteristics of these fakes. He says they have low self-esteem that causes them to be aggressive in

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of possibilities begin to open up by midweek. Some seem more appealing than others. But wait for more facts to emerge later on before you consider which to choose.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bravo to the determined Bovine. While others might give up, you continue to search for answers. Expect your Taurean tenacity to begin paying off by week’s end.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might want to consider stepping back from the task at hand for a while. This could help you get a better perspective on what you’ve done and what still needs to be done.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your keen Cancerian insight should help you determine whether a new offer is solid or just more fluff ‘n’ stuff. The clues are all there, waiting for you to find them.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Being ignored is difficult for any proud Leo or Leona. But pushing yourself back into the spotlight might be unwise. Instead, let things work themselves out at their own pace.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to uncover a colleague’s secret under the pretext of showing concern is ill-advised. Control your curiosity in order to avoid raising resentment in the workplace.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect to hear good news about a loved one. Also, be prepared for some changes in several family relationships that could develop from this lucky turn of events.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprises are expected to accompany a number of changes that will continue through part of next week. At least one could involve a romantic situation.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to have faith in your ability to get the job done, and done well.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace goal that suddenly seems out of reach is no problem for the sure-footed Goat, who moves steadily forward despite any obstacles placed in his or her way.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Uncertainty about who is right and who isn’t might keep you from making a clear-cut decision. Wait until you know more about what you’re being asked to decide. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful to keep your emotions in check when dealing with a demanding personal situation. You need to set an example of strength for others to follow.YOU BORN THIS WEEK: You have an extraordinary ability to rally people to do their best. You would be a treasure as a teacher.

WEIRD PASTIMES (continued):Knaresborough Bed Race. Competitors race beds in teams of six, plus one on the bed. The bed has to run on four wheels and must also float. The race is 1 mile (3 km) long with five up-hill climbs leading to a final challenge of crossing a river.F Ferret Legging is a male-only competition that started in Yorkshire, England, and is now held at the Richmond Highland Games & Celtic Festival in Richmond, Virginia. Men compete with one another by trapping two live ferrets in their pants. The pants must be tied at the ankle and secured at the waist with a belt to prevent the ferrets from escaping. The animals cannot be sedated and must have a full set of teeth. No filing or blunting of teeth is allowed. After the ferrets are secure in the trousers, the competitors stand in front of the judges. The winner is the man who can last the longest. There are two important additional rules to Ferret Legging: The ferrets must have free access from one leg of the trousers to the other, and no underwear can be worn! The current record stands at 5.5 hours.F Witcham in Cambridgeshire, England, hosts an annual Pea Shooting contest where the competition is fierce! Contestants shoot a pea 12 feet (3.64 m) through a 12-inch (30.48 cm) tube towards a 12-inch (30.48 cm) target. Pea shooting recently moved into the 21st century with laser-guided shooters.

them from coming off. The aim of the game is to smash your opponent’s conker. Who goes first is decided by a coin toss, and the loser of the toss holds up a hand with the dangling conker on the end of its string. The other player then attempts to hit the dangling conker as hard as he can with his own conker by swinging it over-arm. If he hits it, he gets another go. If he misses or hits the opponent’s knuckles, the play switches, and the receiver gets a crack at his opponent. This continues until one of the conkers is so damaged that it falls off the string.F Big crowds regularly attend the Great Christmas Pudding Race held in London’s Covent Garden’s

navigating a short saleIf you’re considering buying a home via short sale, be prepared for the process to be different from a regular purchase.A short sale is the sale of a property for less than what is due on the mortgage. Short sales generally come about when an owner can no longer make payments (and likely can’t come to an agreement with the lender about refinancing), and is one step away from foreclosure. If the lender agrees, a short sale allows the seller to get out from under the property and ideally walk away without being obligated for the difference between the sale price and the full amount of the mortgage. The lender gets at least something and often sees this as a preferable alternative to an expensive foreclosure process. As a buyer, your first steps in a short sale are the same as with a regular purchase: get pre-approved and clean up your credit.Your second step is to understand that short sales can and often do fall apart. If you go into a short-sale purchase, be sure that it’s a property you really want, because it can take a long, long time for the lender to approve the sale, and approval isn’t guaranteed. There are a number of potential stumbling blocks along the way. Lien or second mortgage holders can delay or stop the process. After the seller accepts your offer, your agent will need to send those documents to the lender as well, along with a copy of your pre-approval letter and a copy of your earnest money deposit.Make sure it’s clear in your offer who will pay the selling and buying agents a commission. The seller likely won’t have any money to do it. The lender will already be getting less than the full amount of the mortgage and will try to renegotiate the commission with the agent. Be careful that you don’t have to pay any of the shortfall. You’ll need an attorney to protect your interests, as the rules and laws vary from state to state. At the very least, you’ll need to work with an agent who is experienced in handling short sales, ideally someone who has Short Sales and Foreclosure Resource Certification. That certification involves taking and passing a course through the National Association of Realtors.

F Wife Carrying started in Finland and is now played all over the world. In this race, male competitors run a 278-yard (253.5-m) track with two dry obstacles and one water obstacle while carrying their wife on their back. The fastest time wins. The wife must weigh at least 108 pounds (49 kilograms) and may be carried piggyback, fireman’s carry or Estonian style, where the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband’s shoulders, holding onto his waist. The prize is the wife’s weight in beer. F A conker is a nut of the horse chestnut tree. During The World Conker Championships, conkers are threaded onto pieces of knotted string to prevent

Best Dog Breeds for Allergy SufferersBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: There are dogs that do not cause allergies because they have hair, not fur. My stepmother has one, and no one has a reaction to it. Here’s a list of potentially hypoallergenic dog breeds:

• Basenji • Bedlington Terrier• Bichon Frise• Border Terrier• Chinese Crested

Hope this helps! — Brooke S., Barre, Vt.DEAR BROOKE: Thanks so much! This is good list to start from and represents a variety of different breeds. For example, the Chinese Crested is considered a toy dog, very small-framed like a Chihuahua, but with either a soft, straight double coat of hair or no hair at all, depending on the breed.Meanwhile, the Bedlington Terrier is small to medium-sized with the classic curly Terrier coat. When kept groomed, this good-natured breed is less likely to set off allergies.

Grooming, even of supposedly hypoallergenic breeds, is a key to preventing allergic reaction. If you have allergies and are considering getting a dog, find out if its coat will need to be kept trimmed short in order to lessen the amount of shedding.Another interesting fact is that some people are actually allergic to a dog’s saliva, not to its dander. This isn’t always easy to discover, since petting a dog and getting licked by that dog tends to be a package deal. People with allergies who still want a dog should do their research and, ideally, take the opportunity to get up close to one of these hypoallergenic breeds to see if their allergies stay under control.

Very few deals require one to do something highly unusual in order to obtain the best result. But such situations do occur, and one test of a player’s skill is the ability to rise to the occasion when the opportunity presents itself.Take this deal where South was in three notrump and West led the spade six. East won with the king and returned the jack, ducked by declarer. East then shifted to the six of hearts, taken by the ace. The queen-of-clubs finesse lost to East’s king, but that was the last trick for the defense, and South made four notrump. What’s wrong with this picture, you might ask? The play and the outcome seem entirely normal, yet the fact remains that East almost surely would have defeated the contract had he defended differently. He should have played the jack of spades at trick one, not the king!Had he done this, allowing declarer to win the first trick with the queen, three notrump would have gone down one. Sooner or later, South would have attempted the club finesse, losing to the king, and East’s king-of-spades return, overtaken by West with the ace, would have settled declarer’s hash. How can East know at trick one that he should violate the general rule of playing third-hand high? Because he knows from the Rule of Eleven that South has only one spade higher than the six West led.If South’s high spade is the ace, he will undoubtedly hold it up until at least the second round of the suit, so that East will not be able to return a spade later. If the high spade is the queen, though, declarer is very likely to take the first trick, after which he will be fighting a losing battle.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 43-year-old mother of three children, and I also teach school. Since last spring, I have lost all energy, and my muscles seem to hurt all over. I have consulted three doctors. None has found anything wrong with me or my tests. The last doctor has suggested fibromyalgia. I am scheduled to see him again in three weeks. I know nothing about this illness, and I wonder how it’s treated. Please summarize for me. — L.J.ANSWER: Fibromyalgia is an elusive condition. It’s defined as widespread body pain, an ache-all-over feeling, just like you describe. Accompanying symptoms include disturbed sleep and fatigue. No

lab test, X-ray or scan discloses anything amiss. One aid to diagnosis is tender points — specific body sites where finger pressure elicits pain far out of proportion to the pressure applied. No one has a definite answer about what’s going on. One popular explanation is that people with fibromyalgia perceive pain with heightened sensitivity because of an imbalance of brain chemicals and a misfiring of brain nerves. Disturbed sleep is another consequence of these disorders.Often the first treatment for fibromyalgia is an antidepressant. It’s given not so much to relieve depression — although fibromyalgia is a depressing situation — but to restore normal brain-cell communication and normal brain chemistry to dampen the brain’s magnified perception of pain. Savella and Cymbalta are such antidepressants that are approved for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Another medicine often prescribed is Lyrica, a drug whose primary purpose is seizure control. Heat and massage might decrease pain.Exercise is an essential part of treatment. It sounds

Fibromyalgia is an ElusivE ailmEnt

absurd to ask someone in pain to exercise, but a carefully graded exercise program goes a long way toward restoring normal feeling. You can start with something as simple as a walk. Increase the time, the pace and the frequency of walking until you are finally doing 30 minutes a day at a brisk clip. The fibromyalgia booklet explains in greater detail this condition and how it’s approached. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 305W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. NASCAR Hall Enshrines Second ClassCHARLOTTE — By definition, a Hall of Fame can have only one inaugural class. The exclusivity of the NASCAR Hall of Fame displeases some, but the rules guarantee blockbuster classes and breathless excitement for years to come.

It was only a year ago that Richard Petty, William H.G. France, William C. France, Dale Earnhardt and Junior Johnson became the downtown Charlotte shrine’s first inductees. On May 23, the membership doubled as David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Ned Jarrett, Lee Petty and Bud Moore joined the ranks. Only five are to be inducted each year, and these particular gates to immortality will have a long queue for years to come.COPING WITH TRAGEDYNASCAR has never seen a more combative, determined driver than Bobby Allison, whose remarkable successes were marred by tragedies that were almost insurmountable.Allison won 84 times but only once was champion. He nearly lost his life in a 1988 crash at Pocono and lost two sons, Davey and Clifford, to crashes. The former was in a helicopter, the latter in a stock car.The long-suffering champion recalled his sons in a haunting observation, delivered many times, to the effect that the son who loved to play, Clifford, died working, and the son who loved to work, Davey, died playing. On a lighter note, Allison famously described the fight at the 1979 Daytona 500 as a case of Cale Yarborough “hitting me in the fist with his nose.”GENTLEMAN NEDNed Jarrett won two championships (1961, ‘65) and 50 races, all in the 1959-65 time frame, but is just as remembered as a radio announcer and pioneer analyst of CBS telecasts. One of the more memorable television moments in NASCAR history was Jarrett’s call of his son’s victory in the 1993 Daytona 500.Dale Jarrett outdueled Dale Earnhardt in that race, and Ned later apologized to Earnhardt because he was a bit embarrassed at getting carried away (“…and Dale Jarrett is going to win the Daytona 500!”).Earnhardt’s famous reply? “I understand. I’m a daddy, too.”LAST OF THE RED-HOT OWNERSBud Moore was an owner and mechanic, not a driver. The World War II

hero returned to Spartanburg, S.C., and won 63 races with a wide variety of NASCAR’s greatest, including Bobby Allison. If Moore was “old school,” few have attended it since he bowed out in 2000, and part of the reason he left was his inability to adapt to a corporate template that pushed all the pure racers out of the business. As Moore once said of one of his drivers with whom he had differences, “I can hire me a PR man. What I need is a…race car driver.”RACER’S RACERThe most glaring omission from the inaugural class is the most famous

Spartanburg native, David Pearson, whose numbers match up with anyone who ever drove a stock car.Pearson won 105 races, second only to Petty, but his career total of starts, 574, is only 23rd. Ken Schrader, for instance, has competed in 164 more Cup races than Pearson. Pearson matched Petty in skill but not charisma.“I did my racing on the track, not in the media center,” he once said.Pearson is one of few drivers of his time never to be seriously injured in a race car. His three

championships were very nearly the only times he made bids. In only one other year did he run a full schedule.THE PATRIARCHLee Petty had the same endearing smile as his son, Richard, and grandson Kyle, but was much less fond of smiling. He was the sport’s all-time leader in

victories with 54 until Richard came along and surpassed that mark in 1967.When a Goodyear executive chided Petty about his 1959 Daytona 500 victory — Johnny Beauchamp was originally declared the winner — by asking if he’d ever gotten the trophy, Petty smiled and said, “No, I reckon Beauchamp took that trophy to hell with him.”Then he flashed those pearly whites and added, “Uh…heaven.”The founder of Petty Enterprises, who died in 2000, was a man who started racing to put bread on his family’s table. Never a moonshiner, Petty scorned those who were and took advantage of their excesses. As such, he was never particularly well-liked among his peers, partly for cultural reasons and partly because he beat them so often.

THE HISTORY OF SPORTSSports most likely extend back as far as humans have been in existence.

We are active and competitive beings, and through competition, we have developed many of our most basic skills. Through the history of sports and the changes to the rules of

games, we can see how society has changed its beliefs over the years. The winner of the game is no longer the last man alive but the one with the most points or best time.

Tidbits looks back at sports from centuries ago to modern day. • In Ancient Greece, athletic competitions were held during religious festivals in every Greek city. Swimming and fishing were regular sporting events, as was javelin throwing, high jumping, boxing and wrestling. Ancient Persia is where polo and jousting are said to have originated. • The Olympic Games began in Olympia in 776 BC in honor of Zeus. People came from all over Greece to take part in them. Wars were stopped to allow everyone to participate, except women. They were not even allowed to watch. If they did and were caught, they were executed by being thrown off a cliff. Originally the Olympic games only included a single sprinting event. • During the Roman Empire, the first gladiators fought for sport (sometimes to the death), in 264 BC. Romans also competed in chariot and horse racing. They held foot races, wrestling matches and played a form of handball. Less physical games included gambling with dice and board games. • In the Middle Ages, knights competed in jousting tournaments. The main sport of the upper class was hunting deer and wild boar.• A very rough form of football called “mob football” was invented during the Middle Ages and played between neighboring villages. The ball was an inflated pig’s bladder and any means could be used to move the ball to a goal, as long as it didn’t lead to murder or

manslaughter. The game of golf was developed in Scotland in the 15th century. • A billiard game became popular in 16th-century France. The game was played with two balls that were struck with the edge of what resembled a hockey stick on a table made of wood covered in a green woolen cloth with felt sides. The game of curling became well established by the 16th century in Scotland and the Netherlands. • King Charles II made yachting a popular sport in the 17th century, and a game of “Nine Pins,” much like today’s bowling, was played as an indoor and outdoor sport.• In the 18th century, horse racing became a professional sport, and the Jockey Club was formed in Britain in 1727. • During the 19th century, sports became more organized with leagues and rules. The London Football Association devised the rules of football in 1863. In 1867, John Graham Chambers wrote a list of rules for boxing. And today’s baseball, believed to have evolved from earlier forms of the game, became an organized sport in 1845. • In the 20th century, motorized sports became popular, and the first Grand Prix was held in 1906. The first Le Mans 24-hour race was held in 1923.

WEIRD PASTIMES (continued):West Piazza. It is a relay event where teams in fancy dress negotiate a challenging 164-yard (150-meter) obstacle course while carefully balancing a dish of Christmas pudding on a tray. The race supports cancer research in the U.K.F The ancient sport of shin-kicking is part of the annual Cotswold Olimpicks. The goal of shin-kicking is to kick your opponent as hard as you can in the shins. Each time your opponent falls to the ground you earn a point. The winner is the person with the highest score in the best of three rounds. Competitors are encouraged to pad their legs with as much straw as possible. F The World Toe Wrestling Competition started in 1976, and it has made it to the big time in the adult

sporting world. Competitors face each other toe-to-toe across a “toedium,” where they lock their big toes together and try to force their opponent’s foot to the ground. Organizers of the sport applied for its inclusion in the Olympic Games, but it was not accepted.F Extreme Ironing is a dare-devilish sport that combines the dangerous and exciting with the dull and mundane. Participants call themselves “ironists.” They take their ironing board, iron and some wrinkled clothes to extreme places and set to work. Individuals and teams participate in world competitions to set new records for ironing clothes underwater, hanging off cliffs, on top of moving vehicles, even near the top of Mount Everest. Photographs are taken for proof.

shelF doors need small adjustment

QUESTION: I purchased a shelf unit for my bathroom, one of those put-it-together-yourself things, that includes a set of doors on hinges. I built everything according to directions and used the pre-drilled holes to set the hinges and hang the doors. However, they don’t meet in the middle — there’s a three-quarter inch gap between them. I don’t know if this was intentional, but it bugs me. Is it advisable to reset the screws or hinges to close the gap? The unit is made of particle board, but is pretty sturdy. — A Reader, via emailANSWER: The adjustment on both sides would be just over a quarter inch. This should be far enough to drill new screw holes that would hold securely without damaging the area near the old screw holes. So, I say, go for it. Just remember the old adage to measure twice, cut once.As you noted, the particle board material of the unit means that once it’s put together, you should avoid removing any of the screws or nails as they likely can’t be put back in the same place and still securely hold the boards together. So you’ll need to measure and mark the distance you want to shift the doors while they’re still hanging, on both the high and low hinges. Double- and triple-check to ensure the upper and lower hinges will sit in line with each other so that the door hangs straight.Using a helper to keep the door from tearing away, carefully unscrew the hinges where they meet the door and lift the door away. Locate the marked area (and here’s another good time to check the measurements). Drill pilot holes that are significantly smaller in diameter than the hinge screws. With your helper holding the door in place, reattach the door to the hinge at the new pilot holes. Test the door to make sure it opens and closes properly. Repeat all this with the second door.Once the doors are re-hung, fill the old screw holes with wood putty, let dry, sand smooth and touch-up with paint or stain to match the rest of the unit.HOME TIP: Small gouges in particle board furniture can be inexpensively repaired by sanding lightly, filling the gouge with like-colored wood putty, then sanding smooth once the putty is dry.

THIS IS AHAMMERTHIS IS AHAMMER

THE BEST VOICES IN SPORTSI made the mistake of uttering an idle comment the other night. Watching the epic Bernard Hopkins title bout, I said that Max Kellerman was pretty much my favorite announcer in all sports. Of course, as soon as I said that I had to boost my shields and take evasive maneuvers as I began to take on serious flack from all sides. So we got serious. Who are the best? This my current pantheon of modern-day greats: 1. Al MichaelsWhen Monday Night Football went through its late ‘90s growing pains, introducing new jokers every season to share his royal booth, it was too much to bear. Wouldn’t it have been better to just give Michaels — the best of the best — the microphone and let him call the game without any “color”? (They should still do that.)2. Vin ScullySince the ‘50s, there has been no better voice in sports. Scully makes every call, every game seem like a timeless masterpiece and now, in the gloaming of his life, just about every game he calls for the Dodgers is just that. 3. Dick EnbergYou’d be hard pressed to find a less intrusive play-by-play

announcer than Enberg. He doesn’t talk your ear off; instead, he calls the game with the minimum amount of strokes, always mirroring the action. 4. Jim NantzHe’s the voice of the Masters and has been for decades. It’s hard to consider one without the other now.5. Brent MusbergerHe may not be as quick on the draw as he used to be, but Musberger has the classic voice and it lends credibility to just about every college football game he calls. 6. Marv AlbertYES!7. Len DawsonMy ol’ pardner Bill Grigsby was the best in the business when he ruled the roost as the voice of the Chiefs. Lenny has held it down ever since. Listening to a Chiefs game on the radio is bliss with Lenny the Cool rocking the mic. He calls the play before the snap, tells you who’s open and does just about everything but run the route and throw the ball. Great stuff. 8. Jim LampleyLampley has a classic announcer’s voice, but what I like about him is what most dislike about him…he injects his opinion into just about every other sentence during his call. It can get whiny but it sets up his color commentators up pretty well, like… 9. Max KellermanKellerman is all New York, to be sure — verbose and with an accent to match. But nobody, save for my friend Jimmy Glenn and Bert Sugar, knows more about the sweet science. More importantly, he understands the historical context of the sport, and his cameo in Rocky Balboa proves that perfectly.

Q: I have seen previews for a new movie called “Meet Monica Velour,” and I couldn’t believe that the main character was the usually glamorous Kim Cattrall! She looked like a completely different person. Why did she decide to take it on? — Trina R., via emailA: I talked with Kim recently and asked her what most appealed to her about the role. Kim said she was attracted to the part of Monica Velour because it was so against-type for her.“It was an uncompromising, multidimensional role, and not a hooker with a heart of gold, which I was just so sick of,” she said. “Where do these women go when they are done, and they’re not so pretty anymore and not so perky? The same thing happens in Hollywood. It’s just a bigger version, a dramatized version, of what happens to women — not just in show business, but many businesses.“This woman is in the gutter, and I wanted to get inside of that, because I always play such a strong, powerful woman. What about a woman who doesn’t have any of those choices or any of those opportunities? Where does she go? I’ve never been given a role like that. Until now, I had never fought for a role like that.”

i i iQ: Will “Blue Bloods” on CBS be back for a second season? I really hope so, because it’s one of my favorite shows of the season. — George F., SacramentoA: The Tom Selleck-starring police drama will be back for a second season on CBS this fall. In fact, you can see the entire CBS line-up, as well as many other networks’ shows, at celebrityextraonline.com. Just click “Fall 2011 Network Line-Ups” for the

scoop on the new and renewed shows that will be back this fall.

i i iQ: I can’t wait for the new “X-Men” movie to come out this summer. What can you tell me about it? — Frank S., AtlantaA: I spoke with “X-Men: First Class” star (and

“Twilight” alumnus) Edi Gathegi about the movie, and this is what he revealed: “’X-Men’ is definitely the thinking-man’s action movie, which in my opinion makes the best kind of action movie. We’ve got a fiercely talented cast.“Kevin Bacon: He’s Hollywood royalty. He’s a brilliant actor and the nicest guy. He’s the most noncelebrity celebrity you’ll ever meet. And then James McAvoy, he’s just got crazy skill. We did a read-through on one of the first days, and I was just in awe of him. Michael Fassbender is a real actor — he’s a man’s man; he’s got a lot of talent.”

i i iQ: Is it true that Gwyneth Paltrow is pursuing a music career? — Barbara W., via emailA: Since her roles in “Country Strong” and “Glee,” Gwyneth certainly has been veering in that direction. Her representative told the New York Post, “[Gwyneth] still has not decided if she wants to record an album…[it] is still something she is considering.”

z It was British novelist and playwright Somerset Maugham who made the following sage observation: “I made up my mind long ago that life was too short to do anything for myself that I could pay others to do for me.”z You may not be surprised to learn that, according to a poll conducted by The Associated Press, Americans hate math twice as much as any other subject.z If you’re planning a trip to Wisconsin this summer, be sure to stop in the town of Middleton. This is where you’ll find the Mustard Museum, billed as “home to the world’s largest collection of mustards and mustard memorabilia.” The museum is the brainchild of Barry Levinson, a former assistant attorney general for the state of Wisconsin, who says that in October of 1986, after his favorite baseball team lost the World Series,

he was wandering the aisles of a grocery store in the wee hours of the morning looking, as he puts it, for “the meaning of life.” He says that as he passed the mustards he heard a voice saying, “If you collect us, they will come.” And so he did. This summer is a good time to visit, since Aug. 6 is the 20th annual Mustard Day.z Do animals grieve their own? Perhaps so — at least, some animals. When an elephant dies, other elephants in the herd will cover the body with leaves and branches and often will stay with the body for days.z If you own a sport utility vehicle, beware: Statistics show that they roll over three times more often than other passenger cars.

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

False prophets have been around since the days of the true prophets in the Old Testament. Today, those who call these frauds “false prophets” are showing true religious discernment. While the early church had the Gnostics and Jewish legalists, today we have people in church leadership whose principal aim is to produce followers of themselves rather than Jesus. How can we avoid being caught in their trap?

To avoid being caught in their trap we have to do two things: first, KNOW THE WORD. That’s right. If you know (that is, have an intimate relationship with it) the Word and hear someone twist it, you will know something’s wrong. A little bell will ring in your head. That’s the time to challenge the one speaking and rally the faithful.

The second is harder to see at first but will be revealed soon enough. No significant fruit will be produced by those who preach partial truths and an abundance of self-aggrandizing lies. People drawn to God’s Word find peace and hope. Twisted words only produce chaos and confusion.

We can be sure false prophets will come. Many have in my lifetime and they are always revealed; too often with tragic results. The ugly deaths of the followers of

Jim Jones in New Guinea many years ago were the result of someone who spoke partial truth and self-fulfilling lies.

Therefore, we are to return to Jesus’ sayings that tell us to judge them by their fruits. Changed lives focus on the Lord and His goodness. When looking at them from the outside it is easy for us to discern the self-centered message but to those within these cults, the smoothness of the delivery and power of evil blinds them. However, their fruit will never line up with Scripture.

Our Lord came to set captives free. False teachers come to bind the hearts of the weak. Christians with Spirit-filled understanding of God’s Word will not be swayed by their charm and wit…and evil intention.

Jesus says, “For false christ’s and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” [Matt. 24:24] Later Paul writes to the Thessalonians that they should “Test all things; hold fast what it good. Abstain (or flee) from what is evil.” [Vs. 5:21, 22]

Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

I have searched the Internet, but have not been able to find out anything about either the company or the lock. — Pat, Sun City West, Ariz.A: According to David J. Thebodo, an Iowa-based railroad appraiser, two sources that might be beneficial are the National Railway Historical Society, P.O. Box 58547, Philadelphia, PA 19102; and Key, Lock and Lantern, a club

for railroad collecting enthusiasts. Dave Hamilton is the contact person for the club, [email protected] don’t want to derail you, but Thebodo pointed out that most railroad locks are marked with the name of the line. “The Last Gunfight: The Real Story of the Shootout at the O.K. Corral — and How It

Changed the American West”by Jeff Guinn

(Simon & Schuster, $27)Reviewed by Larry Cox

The shootout in Tombstone, Ariz., on a crisp October day in 1881 is one of the most sensational events in the history of the American West. Although dozens of books have been written about the shootout, much of what we think we know about it is simply not true. For starters, the gunfight didn’t happen in the enclosure of the O.K. Corral, but rather at a vacant lot on nearby Fremont Street. More to the point, the event was simply an arrest gone wrong.Jeff Guinn, a former investigative journalist and award-winning author, serves up a riveting narrative that provides a new take on both the gunfight and the people involved.According to Guinn, Wyatt Earp was a much more complex man than many historians have assumed. He was arrested for horse theft when he was a young man and broke out of jail while awaiting trial. He worked as a pimp in many of the river towns in Illinois. Later, during his sporadic service as a police officer and deputy marshal in Kansas and Arizona, he remained technically a fugitive from the law. He was never a full sheriff.Guinn is convinced that in the confusion of the shootout, Wyatt shot and seriously wounded his brother Morgan. He backs up this theory using Wyatt’s own diagram of the battle — a diagram included in the book. The gunfight became in pivotal moment in Western history because, according to Guinn, the “misunderstandings, exaggerations and outright lies about it provided impetus for future generations to form a skewed, one-dimensional view of history.” He adds that the event represented an unintentional, if inevitable, clash between evolving social, political and economic forces, though the Earps, Clantons, McLaurys and Doc Holiday had no notion of that when they began pulling triggers.
