From the exterior the Taylor-Hutton house looks like one of

hundreds of three story three bay by one room mid 19th-century

frame houses. However, the interior proves the contrary. The

ordinary frame house covers a much earlier single story one room

log house with raised panel hearth wall. D~vid Taylor was

probably responsible for raising this structure since it closely

imitates his brick structure Brantwood (CE-69) in form but not

detail. David Taylor bought "Red House f'arni' f:rom a trustee of

Issac Taylor's jstate in 1837 (JS 39/209) which included 150 acres.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

The Taylor-Hutton House o. 1780 and 1850 is three story three bay by one room frame house that was built around an earlier story and a half log structure that dates from the third to fourth quarter of the 18th century. The house faces south with the main gable running east/west. The farm is located along Williams Road about two miles south of Elkton.

The house rests on a partial fieldstone foundation and is totally covered with asbestos shingle over weatherboard. The low sloping roof is covered with seamed tin. Attached to the back of the house and probably added when the structure was enlarged is a two story two bay by one room frame kitchen wing. The building sequence therefore included two possibly three stages of construction.

The log structure is 18 feet 1 inch across by 18 ft. 5n deep with an exposed fieldstone fire wall in the east end. The south side has an unused entrarice and an adjacent window opening. The main facade as a whole is basically symmetrical with a central entrance and corresponding window openings. Two of the sash have been replaced. Third floor windows are 3/3 sash. A simple boxed cornice stretches across above. A very recent shed porch covers the center portion of the first floor.

The west end is plan outside the interior end stove stack with plain bargeboard.

The east end does have the exposed firewall and it appears that another door was cut through the end wall next to the fireplace.

The north side of the main block is partially covered with the kitchen wing which is two bays across by one room deep. It has a shed addition on the east side. The sindows are similar to the rest of the house and a later picture window has been cut through the west wall.

The log house retains its end wall paneling which is the only dateable element in the house. The logs have been exposed on the inside.

The fireplace consists of a large opening with a ovolo molded surround and three heavily raised panels above. A later mantel shelf has been attached. To the north of the fireplace is a four door cupboard with two panels on each

upper door. The lower cupboard doors have been removed. The only section of remaining chairrail is south of the fireplace along the chimney breast and end wall. (see profile) Same open cupboards are set into the wall cavity in this corner. The north, west, and south walls have door openings. It was not evident which doors had been cut through later. The second floor joists are beaded.

The later western section includes an enclosed stair that rises against the west wall and a western parlor with a projecting chimney breast. There is a molded opening surround with piJ.as tered overmantel. The exterior wall changes thickness in sections which proves a change in construction.

Two mid 19th century farm buildings are found to the north of the house and a fieldstone meathouse east of it.

The meathouse is 10' x 12' with an entrance in the west side and small windows in the south and north sides. The simple gable roof projects slightly and is covered with corrugated tin. The fieldstone has been white-washed in previous years.

A frame granary with central passage and side crosses is located north of the b.uuse along with a 'l~ story wagon shed.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The Taylor-Hutton log house is significant because of its exist existence as a one room log structure with 18thvcentury raised panel hearth wall. Very few log structures in Cecil County remain with such an important example of log house interiors.

The log house has been completely enclosed in a three story three bay by one room center hall house of the mid 19th century.

David Taylor was probably responsible for building the frame section, which closely imitates his own brick house of Brantwood (CE - 69) in form but not detail. David Taylor bought what is referred to as "Red House Farm" from a trustee of Issac Taylor's Estate on 1837 (JS 39/209) it included 150 acres and sold for $2265.oo.
