GENRE

Out of all the diff erent genres of music we decided that pop is our favourite because it had a wide variety of music videos and artists. Out of all of these Taylor Swift was a popular choice as her videos not only have a narrative to them but also have a performance (some more of one that the other). This means that when taking inspiration from her previous music videos to create our own we are able to have a range of features to include.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE AND WHY?

Pop music has a vide variety of artist and styles, this means that it can sometimes be hard to decided on what is actually a pop convention and what isn’t as diff erent artist will include diff erent styles in their music videos. In addition to this, sometimes pop music videos can look cheap/tacky is an artist goes over the top with special eff ects…

WHAT DON’T YOU LIKE AND WHY?

As already mentioned out of the pop genre we like the artist Taylor Swift and her style of pop music. Out of all her songs we selected ‘Out of the Woods’ as it doesn’t already have a music video. Meaning that when creating our own we will be able to have an original idea. In addition to this we will be able to include many typical conventions of a pop video by taking inspiration from her previous videos and similar artist.

WHAT MIGHT YOU CHOOSE?

Throughout her videos Taylor Swift has a variety of outfi ts depending on the narrative of the music video. However, she always wears her iconic red lipstick as her signature look.

Costume wise, there tends to be a wide variety as some of her videos plays on the American ‘girl next door’ look, e.g. ‘We are never ever getting back together’ and ‘You belong with me’. Others show off her fame and fortune, e.g. ‘Blank Space’.

ARE THERE COMMON COSTUMES?

Like the costumes in her music video, the locations in which her music videos are set again depend on what kind of narrative she is trying to get her song to portray. In songs like ‘You belong with me’ and ‘Mine’ again they have a ‘girl next door’ feel to them. This means that in her videos setting she is trying to portray really life situations and make her seem normal and an everyday girl. However, in other videos like ‘Bad Blood’ and ‘Shake it off ’ there a lot more typical conventions of pop music videos. E.g. Dance routines and special eff ects.
