Genre Project
Mrs. Ferrante & Mrs. Luckow’s Daily 5 Classes
By the end of this presentation you should be able to…..1. Explain what the characteristics of
different genres are. 2. Identify which genre you would like to
study for your project. 3. Name at least 2 books in the genre you
chose that you would like to read!
What is a genre? How you classify a book.
You will become an expert on one of the following genres.
★ Realistic Fiction★ Historical Fiction★ Biography★ Fantasy ★ Science Fiction★ Mystery
Over the next 12 weeks you will read 2-3 books from the genre you chose. Your teacher will provide you with books in this genre on your level, or you may check some out from the
library. If you check out your own book, please get it
approved by your teacher.
On May 5th you will present to other teachers, administrators and students during
a book fair.

What is Realistic Fiction?
Real life events could have taken place with the main character. The setting takes place in a realistic location.

Historical Fiction
What is historical fiction?
Historical fiction is written to portray a specific time or event from the past. Sometimes the book includes real people from history, and sometimes make-believe characters. Remember: it is a historical FICTION book and not a factual book.

BiographyWhat is a biography?
Authors write biographies to tell the story of a person’s life. Biographies outline the important events of a the person’s life as well as explain their impact on society. Biographies sometimes include non-fiction text features such as timelines, captions, illistrations and photographs.

FantasyWhat is fantasy?
A fictional story that includes unreal elements that could never be true such as talking animals, flying unicorns, dragons and magic. Often fantasy stories include make-believe characters. Fantasy stories include a struggle between a villian and a hero. The setting often takes place in a make-believe place.

Science FictionWhat is science fiction?
Science fiction is a genre of fiction where the story tells about science or technology. The story is not completely unbelieveable (otherwise it would be considered fantasy). Science fiction stories are often set in the future, different planets or universes.

Mystery
What is a mystery book?
Mysteries are fictional stories with crimes, clues and detectives. Mysteries can be suspenseful. Mysteries include suspects and their motives (reasons) for committing the crime.

You will create:
● 1 Tri-fold poster about the genre: completed by all the people who read that genre together.
● Google Slides of book reviews to play at your station on Chromebooks. (Your teacher will provide a template)
● Notecards for oral presentation when visitors come to your genre.
You will also create:
● Your group will work together to write your own example of writing from the genre you are studying.
● For example: if your group is doing historical fiction; together you will write a historical fiction story!
● This story will also be shared during the presentations.
The entire genre project is worth 200 points for ELA.
