WHILE the holiday period is a time for celebration, decorations and plenty of food, the festive season can be dangerous for our pets.
Follow Birch Heath Vet Clinic’s top tips to ensure a safe and happy Christmas:l Keep toxic and dangerous foods out of reach e.g. chocolate, raisins, and bonesl Playful pets sometimes bite off more than they can chew: cats love tinsel, rabbits enjoy chewing fairy
lights, and dogs like to play ball with baubles from the tree, all ofwhich can result in disaster
l Check your pets’ vaccination certicates are up to date ifthey are booked into a boarding kennel or cattery.l
Make your pets a den or call into the clinic forpheromone plug in devices/ tablets which can helpreduce anxiety, as many animals become stressed withreworks, Christmas crackers and visitors.
Ring Birch Heath Veterinary Clinic for advice,or to make an appointment for your pet.

Cloudy2Clear Windows– Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazyfew months forCloudy2Clear Windows. The company whichspecialises in repairingwindows which aresteamed up, broken ordamaged by replacingthe panes – not theframes has grownrapidly as homeownerstake advantage of theirservices. Managing DirectorAlan Ball feels that it’sall about service. ‘Ourproduct is simple. Ifyour double glazing ismisted up we can replacethe glass at a fractionof the cost of a newwindow, in any type offrame, and with a new5 year guarantee. Butit’s not just about saving
people money, althoughthat obviously helps. Many tradespeople havestruggled since last yearand I honestly feel thatduring the good times aminority perhaps didn’tfocus on customer careas much as they shouldhave done. We make surewe turn up when we saywe will, do the job thecustomer requires andleave their house as cleanas a whistle. I often getcomments back fromcustomers on how theyreally didn’t expect thatsort of service which,in a way, is very sad forthe service industry as awhole.’ Cloudy2Clear servicethe Tarporley, Tattenhall,Kelsall, Tarvin &
Bunbury areas andAlan is fnding that hisapproach is a major factorin his success. ‘The truthis that it’s not just the
personal satisfaction thatI get from doing a good
job but also it makesgood business sense.I get a huge amount ofbusiness from friends
and family of people I’vedone work for, which justgoes to show how mucha little bit of effort isappreciated.’ So, if your windows aresteamed up, broken ordamaged give Alan a callfor a free quotation on0800 61 21 118 and he’llbe happy to help!

A CELEBRATION has taken place to mark thehistoric transfer of ownership from CheshireWest and Chester Council to a group ofTrustees of Tarvin Community Woodlands.
The freehold title of the land was transferredto the trustees of the Woodlands fromCheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) inDecember 2014, with the deeds being handedover recently during a special celebration heldat Tarvin Primary School.
Cllr Samantha Dixon, Leader of the Council, presented the deeds to the Trust on behalfof the Council. The presentation of transferdeeds is a considerable landmark for both theTrust and the Council.
Ever since Tarvin Community WoodlandTrust was set up in 1997 by Jim Grogan it hasremained at the heart of the community.
The land at Tarvin Community Woodland was
formally handed over to the community byCheshire West and Chester Council in 2009 ona 125-year lease, having previously functionedwith a Gardening Licence, from the HighwaysAgency.
This allowed the trustees to take responsibilityfor what happens to it, and to use the land asa public amenity. The transfer of the deeds willnow allow the trustees to continue this andhave full control over the land.
The woodland covers 13 acres and was createdfrom the part-elds left as a noise barrier whenthe A51 Tarvin Bypass was constructed in the1980s.
The trustees have proved themselves to becapable of caring for the woodlands well havingbeen awarded six consecutive Green Flagsfrom Keep Britain Tidy, for being one of the bestrun green spaces in the country.
Following the handing over of the deeds,Antoinette Sandbach MP for Eddisbury
presented the sixth Green Flag to thewoodland.
Tarvin woodland is a very important part ofTarvin village. It is now a very well used publicamenity with a central footpath runningthrough open woodland, meadow andwildower areas.
Charles Bradley, Secretary of TarvinCommunity Woodland Trust said: “The
generous transfer by the Council of theownership of the land marks the culminationof Jim Grogan’s vision – that Tarvin shouldhave its own woodland space, provided by theCommunity for the Community.
“We, and future generations of Trustees, willnow care for and develop it as a green oasisin a busy world; to be used and enjoyed byeveryone. Thank you, CWaC!”

John Sim, Charles Bradley, Noel Radcliffewho are all Trustees, Andrew Davies,Headteacher of Tarvin Primary School, and Pete Maiden and Bob Howard who areTrustees, Council leader Cllr Samantha Dixonand Chairman of the Trustees Stuart Exell.

Q. Are there any special changes I should take with my skin care routine in Winter?A. Cold temperatures, harsh winds and central heating can all wreak havoc with your skin by challengingits barrier function and making your skin drier. The problem is that when the skin becomes depleted ofits lipids (fats) it is easier for water to evaporate from the skins surface making your skin become moredehydrated. This increased TEWL (trans epidermal water loss) can be reduced by switching to a richerday and night cream and by replacing a foaming cleanser with a gentle cream cleansing product, if your
skin is affected by these seasonal changes.
Q. I always get a ushed, weathered look to my skinin the winter. Is there a treatment I can use to treat
the broken capillaries/red veins on my cheeks?A. There are several effective methods that we use on
our clients to treat broken capillaries, or telangiectasiaas they are otherwise know. Short wave diathermy, which is a form of heat coagulation, is good forclearing small areas of capillaries. We have used skinneedling (dermaroller) to good effect for skins needingstrengthening and rejuvenation as well as red veincorrection. We also employ IPL (intense pulsed light)treatments to treat larger areas of capillaries. The lighttargets haemoglobin pigment in the blood heatingthem to a point where they are removed. Winter is theperfect time for IPL because your skin is at its palestso IPL is safer and more effective. Visit the treatmentsection of sensoriabeauty.co.uk for more information

This term the teachers, pupils and some of the parents at Treetops Foundation Stage Unit, tookan exciting trip to Hallé St Peter’s in Ancoats where they got to see Manchester’s award-winning orchestra present David Mckee's celebration of individuality; Elmer The PatchworkElephant performed live by part of the Hallé orchestra.
The children were captivated as the Hallé musicians accompanied by a dancer bought thestory to life in an interactive concert they all thoroughly enjoyed participating with the singingand dancing whilst waving their Elmer puppets in time to the music.
The performance was a wonderful experience for the children linking with their current topic onelephants and it was a lovely introduction to instruments of the orchestra, with a score speciallywritten by the Hallé's Education Director, Steve Pickett, based on the book ‘Elmer’ by DavidMcKee, used with the kind permission of Andersen Press .
A truly memorable day was had by everyone.

THE potential loss of any valuable amenity
can understandably arouse strong passions. So, when it became clear that Tarporley’sallotments and bowling green were underthreat of development, many of the residentsof Tarporley and outlying villages wereespecially outraged. This emotion reectednot only the longevity of use of the land for thebenet of Tarporley’s residents (bowls sincethe 1920s and allotments since the 1970s) butalso the fact that the land is almost the lastremaining leisure and recreational green spaceat the heart of the village.Attending the allotments and bowls Open Day
in August were unexpectedly large numbersof visitors who were anxious to voice theirfeelings and offer support. For most, thismeant signing one of the paper petitionswhich had been in circulation since Tarporley’sCarnival. These petitions were kindly hosted byCharles Hardy of the Old Fire Station ChocolateShop, Graham Rathbone, Bowls Club, and IanSwaffield, Barbers on the High St. In addition,
an e-petition was launched which is accessed
via the new allotments and bowls website(www.tarporleyallotments.org.uk).The petitions have now been collected in
and the results are clear. At time of writing, there were a total of 1,203 persons signing inagreement with the general sentiment thatthe allotments and bowls land should not bedeveloped (the old RBL clubhouse and car parkbehind are not included within the scope of thepetition).Fortunately, the recent Submission Version
of Tarporley’s Neighbourhood Plan stillclassies the allotments and bowling green asProtected Local Green Space. So, a strong levelof protection continues and the hope for allallotmenteers and bowlers and many residentsis that the developer will fail to circumvent theprotection and so fail to gain planning consent.

Carer RecruitmentLAS month the BunburyCare Agency held a verysuccessful recruitment day inBunbury Village Hall, writesLynne Bradley, from TarporleyTalk It was very interesting to hear
about the range of experiencesof the carers who attended, and of the difficulties theysometimes have in caring
for the elderly. Te agency’scurrent carers exchanged ideaswith the potential new carersand it was all very engaging.Tey all agreed that it was
essential to allow enough time
when visiting someone intheir home as it makes a hugedifference to the client’s life. From the carers perspective,it means they can do the jobwhich they have been trainedfor, without compromise, which they said is far morerewarding.Agency owner Sarah Green,
said “We have had an in-
creased demand for daily carelocally and want to attractthe very best carers in theindustry. As a result we haveincreased the hourly rate to£12 per hour weekdays and
£15 per hour at weekendsbut have reduced our fees toenable more people to benetfrom our care services.”
WORTHWHILE

distressing. You knowpeople want to remainat home rather thanbe in hospital or acare home, so in thatregard it makes whatwe do very worth-while.“Other days we may
be visiting a personwho just needs com-panionship and a bit of helparound the house. Tis is soimportant, as sometimes wemight be the only face theyget to see that day. It’s aboutmaking that person feelspecial so we like to spenda good amount of time withthem, rather than just rush-ing in and out.“Even though it can be
tiring, it is always rewardingto see the difference ourefforts make on a vulnerablepersons daily life”.

If you go down to the woods today…THIS term saw new GCSE students atTarporley High School embrace thenatural environment and in line withthe national Big Draw event explorea range of approaches to drawinginspired by the work of contemporarylandscape artists.
Accompanied by Ms Pattullo, MrBowland and Ms Lee pupils spent theday at Delamere forest responding to
both the rolling hills, dappled sunlittrees and delicate crisp autumn leaves.
Mr Bowland said of the experience,‘What better way to start ourpupils’ new artistic journey than toimmerse them in our beautiful localenvironment. Pupils conducted themselves with incredible maturity and produced some truly wonderfulwork.’
Pupils will use their initial studies to inspire a range of creative outcomes back in the art studios.

XTH FORM COLLEGEPupils are streets ahead!Year 7 pupils at Tarporley High School
took part in the annual visit ‘UpTarporley’s High Street’.
The purpose of this trip is to carryout activities spanning the keyhumanities subjects and to gain abetter understanding of the localarea.
Students were excited to make avisit to the Catholic and Methodistchurches and some were even luckyenough to have a play of the organ. After drawing the different featuresof each religious building, students
then took a walk further up the High Street. Here, theylooked at the historical aspect of Tarporley including thebuildings and cemetery and they took time to explore thewar memorial and those named on it.
The geography part of the morning looked at the localsurroundings and involved doing pedestrian and trafficcounts. It is fair to say that most students did not knowTarporley has such a rich and varied environment andYear 7 really enjoyed the experience of getting to knowtheir new school’s location better.
Reading programme pilotedLast month saw the launch ofThe National Literacy Trust’s
Premier League Reading Starsat Tarporley High School. Beingtrialled with a Year 9 tutor group,it is hoped the programme willhelp encourage students to readmore in their own time and abouttopics which interest them. Thescheme uses famous footballersto demonstrate the importance ofliteracy and the skills in this eld.

YOU’D think that MPAntoinette Sandbachwould want a break fromParliament when she is inher local constituency. But on a visit to
Tarporley CE Primary, theConservative MP wasinvited to open the school’s
own Parliament. She was given a tour of theschool by the elected PartyLeader pupils and the headteacher, Kerry Forrester. The school has moved
from having a schoolCouncil to a new, democratic and engagingformat of an elected school
Parliament.Pupils put togethermanifestos and canvassedtheir fellow pupils for votesexplaining what they woulddo for their house if elected. In addition to the monthly
Parliamentary meetings theschool has four committeesthat children of all ages areelected to sit on which lookat pupils’ health, safety online, Christian ethos and an eco committee. After her tour Ms Sandbach said: “Those
elected will now know that they will haveto deliver on their manifesto commitmentssomething they and their committees arealready working hard on with support of staffand pupils.£This is a really exciting pupil-led approach to
running a school and engaging young peoplewith the world around them, I’m looking
forward to hearing more.”Ms Forrester added: “I just love our new School
Parliament system we have set up as it hascome from the ideas of our children followinglast year’s elections. It’s wonderful to see all of our children
experiencing a parliamentary system at a levelthey understand from the youngest children inthe school (who are 4) to our oldest Yr6 pupils.Who knows we may even have the futureMembers of Parliaments in our midst.”

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
THE year end is approaching and it is time to enjoythe small splashes of colour in the garden. Frost isso pretty on the most ordinary of foliage so enjoy
the frosting on the humble blackberry leaf (seephoto) or the large at dying heads of Sedum orHydrangea. I know I have mentioned this before butone of my favourite shrubs Viburnum bodnantenseDawn, started owering in October and is heavywith scent in milder periods throughout winter.Plant it near a regular thoroughfare so you cancatch the honeyed scent daily.
For colour the evergreens take the stage inwinter. Some conifers have architectural shapes
provided they are given space to grow naturally.Chamaecyparis pisifera Filifera Aurea is a bit ofa mouthful of a name but it will grow as a broadpyramid shape with drooping golden foliage allyear and can be clipped to keep it compact. Partnerit with the rich deep green leaves and red berriesof mounded Skimmia and some glaucous blueEuphorbia characias wulfenii.
Other plants that may be in ower includeMahonia media, the varieties Charity or Winter
Sun are often seen for sale. This is a tall shrubwith evergreen large spiky leaves and long stemscovered with tiny yellow scented owers. Mahonias
are great for striking winter colour and if they gettoo tall, cut stems down in early spring and they willre-sprout new shoots for next winter.
Jobs to do in the garden include pruninggrapevines when the plant is fully dormant inwinter. They produce sap when stems are cut andcan have disease introduced to the cut when theplant is growing. Pruning in winter when the sapwill not bleed prevents this from happening.
Make sure plants in pots are protected from frost
by making sure the pots are not waterlogged asthey are more likely to freeze and crack in coldweather. Take a plastic bag larger than the pot, cutthe bottom off to allow drainage and then stuff withstraw to the top of the pot. Move lemon or orangetrees in pots to greenhouse or cool conservatoryand do the same for pelargoniums. Last year I keptmine dry in pots in the garage by a window andthey came through to grow on this year.
