A Northland dairy farmer was recently prosecuted in the Environment Court for effluent spillages that occurred on his farm. His defence was that his farm manager was the person responsible for the operation of the effluent system and therefore the farm owner was not responsible and

liable. The Judge did not agree with the employer’s submissions, However, he stated that dairy farm managers could be held legally responsible and liable to prosecution for unlawful effluent spillages resulting from any breaches of the farm resource consent conditions, resulting in substantial fines which recent prosecutions have shown, may exceed their annual remuneration package as an employee.

The Judge’s comments raise a number of interesting issues as to whether the farm manager should be responsible for such breaches when the employee is not an independent contractor, such as a variable order or 50/50 sharemilker. There is case law which clearly demonstrates what the status is of an independent contractor and an employee. Under the Employment Relations Act employees are not required to have Public Liability Insurance as they have no ownership stake in the business and do not share in the risk of the business.

Employers are required under the Employment Relations Act to give very clear directions to the employee, providing a Job Description showing the employee the required standards to be met. Employers are also required to provide the necessary training as to operation and maintenance of plant such as effluent systems.

It is the farm owner/employer, who must obtain the necessary resource consent from the local authority to dispose of effluent and provide the systems for the disposal of that effluent and provide to the farm manager (the employee), a farm effluent disposal operational and maintenance plan that meets the resource consent requirements.

The farm manager is required to lubricate the pump and spray unit and notify the employer of any defects immediately. It is the farm owner/employer’s responsibility to meet the cost of maintaining the farm effluent system and to rectify any defects immediately and record it.

The issue of whether a farm manager or employee is responsible will be tested no doubt, in future Environment Court proceedings.

Employees and farm managers should be aware that they should ensure that they receive qualified third party advice before they sign their employment agreements. Farmers of New Zealand employment agreements specifically deal with this farm effluent disposal issue.

Environmental award nominations are openTwo decades since their inception, the Taranaki

Environmental Award have become an institution on the local calendar and nominations for 2012 are now open.

Each year the awards recognise outstanding environmental contributions by businesses, the agricultural sector, individuals, schools and community groups. There have been 177 winners since 1993.

The chairman of the Taranaki Regional Council, David MacLeod says it’s vital to recognise and reward positive environmental efforts.

“In Taranaki we enjoy healthy rivers, a rich landscape, clean air and a quality coastal environment, but this is not simply by good luck,” he says.

“Maintaining the quality of our environment requires the combined effort of all those who use it — from school children, farmers and communities to our major industries.”

Nominations close on March 31 and to qualify, projects must make a practical contribution to the sustainable management of the natural resources of the region, or promote community awareness of the need for sustainable management through a promotional or educational programme.

All the projects must be sustainable over time and not depend on a continuing subsidy larger than the benefit to the community. They must be current, ongoing or nearing completion, and be carried out in Taranaki.

The objectives of the award are:

• To recognise individuals or groups within the community involved in ongoing activities which conserve, enhance, promote and/or develop the natural and physical resources of the Taranaki region and benefit the community.

Competitors travelled from all over the North Island to take part in the two-day ploughing contest where vintage and horse-drawn ploughing contests were held alongside conventional and reversible ploughing.

It’s one of the reasons why organic nashi pear grower Jeannie Smith bought an existing orchard at Urenui

15 years ago.

“We have a high water table and we can’t grow things like avocados

here because it’s too wet. Nashis like wetness,” she said.

When marketing the fruit to a satisfied overseas market and a slumped domestic demand saw growers cutting their orchards out, Jeannie and business

partner Bryan Murray, sought to find a new way of marketing their fruit — and the idea of juicing it was born.

“It’s a very juicy fruit, and it doesn’t need anything added to it, maybe a little ascorbic acid to prevent discolouration, but there’s no added sugar or other flavourings,” said Jeannie.

With the decision made to juice fruit it was then necessary to find a juicing plant that could processed certified organic fruit.

Te Kauwhata processor John Morris was the answer and Nashinui juices came into production.

“The plant can only take large quantities of fruit for processing so he does two tonnes at a time,” Jeannie says. ”It is essential to have good quality fruit to produce quality juice. We make

sure we pick the best crop for juicing because bad fruit just gives bad juice.”

Jeannie’s trees appear to be quite prolific. “We have far more fruit than we can sell and since we don’t export, our fruit and juice is sold through the farmers markets and as well as fruit is sold to organic wholesalers — Ceres.”

She says the farm’s organic process is easier now, but there was a time when it presented its challenges.

“There were few or no organic croppers when I first started out here and we had to learn how to deal with it — for example ceasing all chemical practices.”

Many years were spent clearing the soil of all the chemicals and this required, among other things, the need to soil test.

As well as juicing the produce from his own grape vines, Te Kauwhata juice processor John Morris also juices nashi pears from Jeannie Smith’s Taranaki property.

John took over Greenways Pure Fruit Juices Ltd from the Smith family (no relation to Jeannie Smith) at Te Kauwhata about 18 months ago.

The plant had been in the Smith family for around 60 years — over three generations — and the machinery driving the plant, the vats and the pasteuriser are ‘early’ style and have been in use for many years.

John says the steam and boiler-type system which drives the juicing press ensures

an even heat flow and better pasteurisation The pressing part of the plant however is up-to-date, state-of-the art.

“It’s like a large squeezer where fruit juice is sucked into a big vat a bit like a submarine cannister, having already been sieved by large gauze-type machines inside the press. It is then pasteurised and bottled,” John says. Pasteurising ensures a longer shelf life for the juice.

He says modern commercial juicing machines can do ‘in-bottle’ pasteurisation, but he prefers the old method, as it gives a better quality taste.

“It does as good-a-job, if not better.”

We need to do a minimum of two tonnes (at a time) because the machine works better if it’s fuller and also, by the time it’s fired up, it’s more economical,” he says.

While Jeannie’s nashis can be processed in the course of a day, there does need to be some standing time between the crushing and the bottling processes.

“There is a paper trail with everything we do on the property, but once you get the hang of the paperwork and keep it up, it’s not a big job,” she says. ”Also, in this technological age, it’s faster with computer record keeping, which is where Bryan comes in.”

Growing organically did have some additional benefits.

“Going totally organic has seen the demise of such destructive and costly pests like pear slug and spider mite. It’s amazing how it all works because we have none of these pests at all now,” said Jeannie.

She says with the organic process of balancing the soil condition it becomes natural for the predators to take care of the pests.

“We find that when you don’t use chemicals, the natural balance of everything returns and the soil has also built up the microbes, making nice compost.”

Jeannie, who prefers to describe her age range as middle life, and Bryan, moved together to the outdoors from their desk jobs — she was owner of a classified advertising paper and Bryan, a desktop publisher for the same paper.

“Bryan is handy on the farm for the stuff requiring some muscle and there are still deadlines, but it’s a much better way of life,” she says. They also grow tomatoes in tunnel houses for sale at the farm gate and the farmers market.

Also with a demand at the market for gladioli Jeannie plans planting 200 bulbs of the flower this year.

Kathy and Kelvin Lane have been breeding Red Poll cattle in the Manawatu since 1992

Former dairy farmers the husband and wife team knew the day would come when they would want to

step back from milking and take life a little bit easier.

Since buying the five red Poll yearlings from SeaCliff stud in Otago they have steadily built up a herd of 40 head registered stud cows to establish Kaihinau Stud.

They also run a herd of 70 head commercial breeding Red Poll cows and use stud Red Poll bulls across both herds.

Four years ago the couple who live at Makerua sold their dairy herd and now along with the Red Polls run around 4,000 Romdale breeding ewes on the 1150 hectare farm.

Kelvin said he was first introduced to the breed when he was a boy and

was taken with their docility, the fact they were polled and that they bred true to type.

“They retain their colour crossed with other breeds, the only exception I have found is those crossed with a black breed such as Angus,” he said.

They joined the Red Poll Society when he purchased the first five yearlings and reckons it has become part of their life — enjoying the contact with other members.

He said the breed has a reputation for being hardy and good foragers who handle second rate, or poor, country well.

“My own aren’t pushed that hard as we have around 900 ha of good pasture land so they have it pretty easy,“

he laughs.

“They also grow quickly and regularly kill out at around 62 per cent live weight which is a good return.”

He says he farms the cattle strictly as a commercial entity — steers are sold at between 15-18 months of age and heifers around 20-22 months, “I try to avoid taking them through a second winter,” he says.

Kaihinau stud retains all their calves and raises dairy beef as well.

Kelvin regrets not having had extra time to spend with the stock and for this reason in the past he hasn’t shown his stock at field days or pastoral shows.

“We sell a few of the young pedigree bulls, but normally I try to steer buyers to the smaller herd

Most of us can get away with poor health choices in our 20’s and 30’s but from age 40 the � rst signs of decline start to appear. Raised blood pressure, cholesterol, arthritis and other problems all start to appear. Of course it is essential to get good medical advice but there are many simple, practical and effective measures we can implement to help our bodies as we age. I have seen thousands of people make real improvement using such measures built around good diet and appropriate supplements.

Our health is entirely dependent on optimum intake of essential nutrients including the 21 known essential minerals, all the vitamins and numerous antioxidants that protect our cells against free radicals. Farmers and Vets know too well the importance of good animal nutrition. Maybe it is time we took equally good care of our bodies.

The effects of these low nutrient levels can take decades to show their effect. Most people with hypertension � nd that this � rst appears after age 50. In most cases this is just a slow deterioration in the structure of blood vessels especially a lack of the antioxidants that protect the proteins (collagen and elastin) that make up most of blood vessels. Over time this increases the resistance of blood meaning your

heart has to work harder to circulate blood to your cells. A study by hypertension researcher De Champlain (2004) “Oxidative Stress in Hypertension” concluded with: “Moreover, our studies suggest that the chronic treatment with appropriate antioxidative therapies could prevent the development of hypertension.” My experience is that people with primary hypertension can get real bene� ts from intensive antioxidant therapy.

A medium sized animal they are naturally polled, a deep red in colour with dark pigmented udders.

The cows have plenty of milk, which is high in protein allowing them to raise strong and quick growing calves.

Easy calvers, both the cows and bulls are quiet in nature, easy to handle and a good foragers.

Red poll cattle were first introduced to New Zealand in 1898 after Sir Heaton Rhodes, of Otahuna Stud, Tai Tapu, in Christchurch imported three in calf cows and a bull from England.

The young weanling Clydesdale colt bred by the Moss brothers of Illinois of Moss Mounds Stud arrived in 2009.

Clydesdales are a rare breed in New Zealand and with only a small breeding base it can be difficult to keep genetic diversity.

Vet and Clydesdale breeder Sylvia Vriend purchased ‘King’ in the hope the new blood line would help maintain the genetic vigour and future of the breed in this country.

Last season Sylvia had two of King’ progeny born at her Glencarron Stud at Manaia in South Taranaki and another two foals were born at outside studs. All foals were conceived by artificial insemination and are

proof misconceptions about artificial insemination not working with draft breeds are unfounded said Sylvia.

The now three-year-old stallion currently stands 17.22hh and is likely to mature to closer to 18hh. He is black in colour — a solid colour with no roaning — with a narrow white blaze and white socks.

Sylvia believes he will add conformation type, size, substance and movement to most New Zealand blood lines.

She says the foundation of the stud came about after she met the retired (and now late horse enthusiast Walter Allen). She was passionate about harness horses, but lacked time

With the payout high and interest low, it’s a really good time to fix the things that are causing some grief around the Dairy.Before you upgrade to new Milfos cup removers or a Milfos Variable Drive Vacuum System it would be sensible to evaluate things that could impact on your proposed upgrade.Sparkies generally do a great job, however, we regularly come across wiring of all sorts that has been installed incorrectly.For instance we see the right cable used on say, a milk pump controller, but still bundled with everything else so it creates interference with the controller and bingo, a slightly crazy controller. Unless you know what to look for it can be a painful process to find as it looks like a faulty controller.This is important for all sorts of systems from pulsation controllers to cup removers and the more sophisticated the system the more careful you have to be. We recommend keeping data cables as far away from power as possible.We have all heard about stray voltage, yes it does exist and can cause all sorts of issues, we have found a major source is the cable and terminations between Variable drives and Motors.There is a lot of documentation supplied with variable drives with regard to the cable to be used and metal glands for terminations etc, these are minimums and a good Sparky will follow manufacturer’s recommendations or better. If in doubt get it checked.Don’t forget the effluent or water pump, same deal, and move the electric fence unit to the implement shed, they can be an interference nasty in the dairy.For sensible advice on Upgrades, find your local Milfos dealer or Area Sales Manager at www.milfos.com.

While it’s great to have a good season, it’s important to look at the coming dry off when most people have machine tests carried out.

What tends to happen is that everyone wants their machine tests done around the same time. While service partners try to accommodate everyone, along with other major project work and upgrades, sometimes delays can happen with the high workload.

There’s really no reason why the machine tests can’t be done during the year between milkings, while it’s not so busy.

The service partners are good at working around your milking schedule. Also, the upside of getting work done during the year is that the service partners will have the time to carry out routine maintenance to keep your machine in top working order,

hopefully avoiding aggravating and costly breakdowns.

To go one better, talk with your local Milfos Service Partner and get them to tell you about the iCARE Scheduled Maintenance Programme.

This programme will allow you to tailor make a programme to suit your requirements and budget.

The Milfos iCARE programme takes the stress out of shed maintenance, right down to making sure you have filter socks on hand when you need them.

There are a lot of things happening in the farming business, and as per usual the weather has dictated, with a bumper season for a lot of areas.

A young King of Hearts tucks into his hay

and land and Walter a harness and carriage restorationist was passionate about draft horses. It was a melding of dreams and a shared vision that culminated with the formation of Glencarron Stud more than two decades ago.

Having worked draft horses on his home farm Walter was keen to own a purebred Clydesdale colt and purchased a young colt — Craigs Sir Keith.

“Sir Keith was a very quiet stallion and worked in harness in a restored wagon and just adored kids (and their ice creams !). He was basically instrumental in teaching me the aspects of harnessing, driving, shoeing and foot care. Walter always shod Sir Keith himself. Whilst not a trained farrier he had taught himself shoeing and was very able with the forge to make the shoes as well,” said Sylvia.

Sir Keith left the stud three top class filly foals who were not only used in harness at shows and ploughing competitions, but also became the foundation mares of the stud.

“The proponents of Clydesdale breeding will tell you an Ayton Perfection colt (King) crossed over Doura Perfection mares (the Sir Keith mares) will work every time,” said Sylvia

“With Walter life was very busy. The intricacies of the single furrow plough was one of the many steep and complex learning curves I faced during our time together. Adding two horses to the equation was very nerve wracking for me, but it soon became something of an addiction.”

It was unfortunate during the last four years prior to Walter’s passing in 2007, Sylvia became very ill with Chronic Fatigue Immunodeficiency Syndrome. The disease not only incapacitated her, but required expensive medical treatment and little progress was made with the horses during this time.

Adding to this, Walter’s death hit

Sylvia hard and it wasn’t until two years later she was able to follow up on one of his challenges to improve the stud bloodlines.

He had once said `if money was no object which stallion would you buy?’

“I had seen a picture of a black Clydesdale stallion in an American journal and I’d replied — the horse in America.”

When the American stallion came up for sale, Sylvia responded. “The pedigree research showed a very good cross to my mares,” she said.

However shipping and quarantine concerns by the owners for the mature stallion’s well-being prevented the purchase. Instead an agreement was reached for the purchase of a weanling son and Wolf Mound’s King of Hearts was to find a new home in New Zealand.

In spite of birthing problems Sylvia’s foals resulting from Kings first services are “all looking good with nice proportions and plenty of Clydie muscle.

“It will be an exciting time with training these new youngsters and getting them to shows,” she said.

“One a beautiful black filly foal, and the first filly in over a decade at the stud has such striking looks and build she will be staying with the stud.”

Walter always used to say — “Dare to think it — dare to do it and dreams will come true.”

“King is my thanks to Walter for all his time, knowledge, fun and understanding and will fulfill our dream of breeding quality lines from ‘our’ mares.

It was through repeated requests from farmers that Tineke Verkade initially established her Waikato-based business Homeopathic Farm Support in 1997.

Growing up on a farm in Holland,

Tineke had a long-standing involvement with livestock and animals. When she immigrated to New Zealand that association continued through owning lifestyle blocks and a variety of animals.

During her 16 years working as a senior staff nurse at Waikato Hospital, Tineke became interested in complementary therapies. She began to research homeopathy and qualified as a registered naturopath in the late 1980s.

In 1991 she set up a private practice, working on a part-time basis using homeopathy on people and her own animals. Recommendations soon spread and as more farmers in the Waikato contacted Tineke, her part-time work grew to full-time.

“Living in the middle of the Waikato,

a lot of my patients were dairy farmers and they pushed me to start doing this business,” said Tineke.

Homeopathic Farm Support provides information, education, guidelines and support for using homeopathy safely and effectively.

“The goal of Homeopathic Farm Support is to support the farmers who want to use homeopathy in a gentle and right way,” said Tineke.

“For certified organic farmers, homeopathy becomes their main tool.”

Homeopathic Farm Support became officially certified by BioGro New Zealand in 1997 and has expanded to employ additional qualified homeopaths and an office manager to assist with the day-to-day running of the company.

In 2010 Tineke’s business was recognised when she was judged the supreme winner of the Rural Women New Zealand’s Enterprising Rural Women Award.

Tineke has written several books on homeopathy for dairy farmers and other livestock owners. She will have these books along with her selection of homeopathic products on display at the Central Districts Field Days.

Venison burgers a tasty treat at the Central Districts Field Days

Popular venison burger stand will again feature at this year’s Central Districts Field Days

Thousands of venison burgers will help feed visitors at this year’s Central Districts Field Days.

Organised and operated by members of the Central Regions Deer Farmers Association (CRDFA), the venison burger stand has become a long-standing tradition.

Established in 2006 following the merger of the region’s former Deer Farmers Association branches, the CRDFA draws members from the lower North Island.

The CRDFA aims to support the interests of the New Zealand deer farming industry, particularly deer farmers in the central regions.

CRDFA secretary Mike Green said this aim is achieved through informing members of industry issues, market trends, organising educational seminars and field days.

The CRDFA also provides networking opportunities with other farmers through social events, velvet competitions, field days, and industry conferences.

“A problem shared is a problem halved,” he said.

“They are a fascinating animal to farm, intelligent and easy care, requiring low labour inputs.”

The venison burger stand at the Central Districts Field Days was originally set up by three members of the

former Manawatu Deer Farmers Association in 1983.

Since the merger, CRDFA members have continued to run this stand each year.

Mr Green said the CRDFA will offer Central Districts Field Days visitors the best tasting, best value and healthiest burgers anywhere.

“Venison has no fat, less cholesterol than skinless chicken and more iron than beef.”

Funds raised through the venison burger stand will go towards branch activities, field days, trips and velvet competitions.

During Thursday the inaugural Exhibitor Tractor Pull competition will take place with all businesses exhibiting at the field day eligible to participate.

For the second time, the Stihl Timber Aces

arena will feature world class athletes competing in woodchopping and sawing events over the three days. Complementing the might of the underhand and standing chop is stock chainsaw and modified chainsaw match racing. Axe throwing, crosscut sawing and the hard fought chainsaw bar and chain fit will also be put under the tension of competitive match racing over a busy three-day programme.

Look out for the big names from 2011’s world national teams champs from the STIHL Timbersports World Championship in Roermond, Holland.

The Central Districts Double Power Fencing competition will be held along with the National Excavator Championships where all the regional winners from around the country will compete for the national title.

The Meridian Energy Food Court will offer a range of options from the traditional field days fare to the more healthy options. The food court will offer extra seating and a shaded area to enable visitors to relax and enjoy the entertainment.

Rural New Zealand is a trusting and open place — one where many people still don’t lock their doors or take the keys out of the quad bike at night. It’s a holdover from a more honest and community-centred time, and one which nobody wants to let go of, as it suggests that the evils of the big city have at last invaded the countryside.

The reality is though, that lawless behaviour and outright theft are rife in rural areas just as they are in urban centres. Some of the crimes are different (like the poaching of livestock), and some are tediously familiar, such as vandalism and petty theft.

Rural police forces do the best they can, but they are inevitably stretched thin across a large area, and the victims of crime are often at a loss to answer the many detailed questions which the police need to build a case and catch the offenders.

The good news is that there is an answer — and it isn’t simply to make each house and farm into a fortress. High-resolution, stand alone

camera systems are now available for affordable prices which put military-grade security into the reach of Kiwi farmers. These cameras, brand-named I-Spy, are able to render crystal clear images in high-def of any intruders — images which are viable evidence before a judge.

Say goodbye to unwanted intruders Successful bee business began as a hobbyTaranaki couple Stephen and Fiona Black have developed a growing beekeeping hobby into a successful business ‘Bees-R-Us’. The pair will be showcasing products at the Central Districts Field Days

When New Zealand-born Stephen Black and his Scottish wife Fiona moved from Scotland to Taranaki, they had no idea that within a few years they would own and operate a successful business producing honey and other bee products.

Starting with just two beehives bought purely for interest, the number soon grew to seven, then increased again to 147 hives. Now the couple own 1000 beehives covering a wide area through the Taranaki.

Although the interest in bees was initially Stephen’s hobby, Fiona became more involved as the number of beehives increased.

“I decided that there was no point going against it and would have to help as now Stephen was working five days a week and looking after the bees every weekend and evening,” said Fiona.

“So I got myself a bee-suit and helped any way I could.”

As the couple’s family grew along with the business, they chose to expand the beekeeping operation.

“We decided that we liked the lifestyle that the bees gave us and wanted to continue to grow,” said Fiona.

“We found that it was hard to extract our honey in someone else’s premises as this did not give us any flexibility to work when we wanted to.

“So we built our own honey house and over the years have added more and more equipment.”

The Black’s honey house was approved by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) in 2006 and runs under

a risk management programme (RMP). This means the honey produced from their Bees-R-Us business is eligible for export and run under strict regulations.

In 2008 the growth of Bees-R-Us enabled the couple to give up their outside employment to run their business full time. At that stage they had around 700 beehives.

Both Stephen and Fiona have furthered their beekeeping knowledge through meeting with other beekeepers, attending bee conferences and completing a Telford apiculture course.

With the number of beehives increasing to 1000 beehives this year, the couple have employed a full-time beekeeper from The Philippines. They also employ a part-time beekeeping assistant who assists with extracting and packing.

Fiona said their business is unusual due to its smaller size in comparison to some of the other beekeepers.

“Instead of packing all our honey into drums and selling it to packers to do any processing, we pack the majority of our honey ourselves and sell direct to shops and the public nationwide.”

The couple will present a full honey range, beekeeping equipment and other bee products at the Central Districts Field Days.

• Inherited property is separate property, and generally cannot be claimed as relationship property by a de-facto partner, husband or wife.

• But, inherited property changes its status to relationship property where it is intermingled with relationship property and ex-partners may then be entitled to up to half of the increase in the value of inherited assets, even when their contribution to the increase in value is only indirect.

Solutions• Consult with family members as to

succession planning to decide who can add value to the property. Succession plans should be � exible and fair. Consider what family members who do not receive the farm should get. Plans must be made while farm owners have capacity to enter into legal arrangements.

• Structure: Inherited land and other assets should be transferred to a separate structure as soon as they are inherited so that they are not

intermingled with relationship property assets. The repeal of gift duty late last year makes this easier to do than ever before. An example of an appropriate structure is that farmland and cash is held in a trust, company, or limited partnership. The farm business is run separately from the asset-holding structure and can lease the land from that entity. Assets in separate structures must be treated accordingly. Tax consequences of transferring land must also be considered.

• Contract Out: If you stand to inherit, give consideration to entering into a contracting out agreement with your partner to provide that your inherited assets, and increase in their values will remain your separate property upon separation. Your partner must obtain independent legal advice on the agreement before signing. The agreement may require subsequent amendments and can be set aside where circumstances render the agreement unfair to either party such that the agreement creates a ‘serious injustice’. Consider what your partner gets if your relationship ends, particularly if children are involved.As with any legal issue, your particular

Management and feeding of cows over the next three to four months will signi� cantly in� uence milk yields and fertility during their subsequent lactation. It is important to assess cows’ body condition scores (BCS) now, then devise and implement some strategies to achieve target condition scores at least one month prior to calving, as they will not increase from then on. BCS of mature cows should be 5 to 5.5, and two and three-year -olds at least 5.5 at calving.

Visually assessing BSC can be subjective as one person’s score of 4 is another’s 3. It can become more objective by inviting your consultant or neighbour to score your cows, and attending workshops such as those held by DairyNZ. They have also produced a very good condition scoring booklet. Don’t just rely on automatic weighing systems as weight increases may not fully re� ect changes in BCS.

The following table copied from the DairyNZ website indicates the length of dry period required by cows, of varying BCS, to achieve target condition at calving. The shorter the lactation the less milk produced, thus income per cow. Also, it takes more feed to gain condition when cows are dry as opposed to milking. Therefore, it is generally more cost effective to feed cows to gain condition during mid and late lactation,

Nutritional Strategies to dry off Cows at Target Condition Scores

Dairyingthan dry them off early due to excessive loss of condition.Feed quality is important when trying to put condition on cows, as

demonstrated in a recent study where dry cows required an additional 210 kg DM of autumn pasture on top of maintenance to gain one BCS, but only 125-150 kg of DM of a good quality supplement.

High starch or sugar feeds like cereal grains, maize or whole crop silages tend to work best when targeting condition gain. Mineral supplements containing selenium and zinc may also be bene� cial, as these are essential components in the formation of keratin plugs and in udder regeneration.

Most trace mineral supplements also contain the other key trace minerals, cobalt, copper and iodine. Balancer mixes containing the key major minerals should be fed if supplementary feeds contribute a signi� cant part of the diet, as they tend to be low in these minerals. Using a feed ration programme can help determine the most appropriate products to feed.

Mineral supplements can be supplied in a number of forms and via a variety of delivery systems, such as via water or molasses, free access loose licks, balancers with forage, meal or pellets. The form and route depend on a number of factors, such as location of cows, water supplies and dosing systems, types of supplements being fed and feeding systems. It is a case of working out which system best suits the farm, facilities, resources and staff

Tough new tests for young people going for their driving licences are now in effect, with a major impact on rural residents, who will have to travel to larger urban centres for the tests

This has prompted criticism that urban areas are rather different from rural roads, more seal than gravel, and driving conditions are not quite the same.

However, those defending the new regime point out that the tests are more stringent, and getting ready for them leaves no room for lax preparation.

Young drivers are in fact expected to fail the new restricted licence tests unless they put in some serious practise, say driving instructors.

The New Zealand Transport Agency defends its new hard line approach, saying one teenager dies on the nation’s roads every week.

Restricted and full car licence tests have now changed and motorcycle tests will have a new restricted test introduced in October.

The restricted car test will now take one hour, with 45 minutes of driving, while the full test will be 30 minutes.

by Paul Campbell NZTA chief executive, Geoff Dangerfield, said both tests would be harder to pass than previous versions and drivers would need to have done at least 120 hours of supervised practise first.

“A higher standard of driving will be needed to pass – that is the whole point, and we make no apologies for that. This is about making new drivers safer drivers by encouraging them to take the time to develop their skills.

“The more experience that drivers gain in the learner licencing phase, the less likely they are to crash when they begin driving alone. We are doing young people no favours with a ‘once-over-lightly’ approach’.”

More than 700 Kiwi teenagers died in road crashes in the past decade, and New Zealand had the highest road death rate in the OECD for 16-17 year olds.

Research showed young drivers who completed 120 hours of supervised practise on their learner licence had a solo-driving crash rate 40 per cent lower than those who did only 50 hours.To prepare for the tests, young drivers should be practising in all possible conditions, including on seal and gravel, in wet weather and at night.

The new tests have the endorsement of V8 Supercar driver and youth driving advocate, Greg Murphy.

“The move to a longer, more exacting test is a good one. New Zealand’s death and injury statistics are a terrible witness to the fact that we have too many young drivers on our roads who have had very little supervision or training, and as a result, lack the key skills necessary to become safe drivers.”

If you apply for a building consent from March 1, you must make sure that the tradesmen and professionals you employ are correctly licenced to carry out the work.

This covers designers, carpenters, roofers, external plasterers, brick and blocklayers and foundation specialists.

Professional engineers, architects, plumbers and gasfitters are treated as licenced building practitioners and can carry out some restricted building work.

Not all work that requires a building consent is restricted. The fine details can be checked with your local council.

If you are applying for building consent your building design must be done by a licenced designer, a registered architect or a chartered professional engineer.

If you undertake structural work or

work that affects the weathertightness of a building, and the building is residential, then that work may be classified as restricted building work or RBW.

Most building plans that need building consent from your council, will include RBW. Work that needs building consent such as kitchen installation and pool fences are examples of exceptions to this. If it doesn’t involve work to the home’s primary structure or weathertightness, it is not classified as RBW.

If you already have a design drawn up, and consent application is made after March 1, then the building consent application will need to comply with RBW requirements regardless of when the plans were drawn.

There are a lot of different ways that you might go about organising the building or renovating of your home. You might build through a contracting company who will hire the right licenced professionals for you or you might hire a builder who holds a carpenter LBP licence. They may then hire other LBPs to do work such as roofing and plumbing. Other options are hiring each type of tradesperson directly

or asking your designer to project manage the work for you.

Registered plumbers and registered gasfitters are automatically treated as LBPs in the roofing, external plastering, and bricklaying and blocklaying licencing classes. This is in recognition they carry out this type of work in the ordinary course of their business, and they must only carry out work that falls within their own competence levels.

Registered Architects, Chartered Professional Engineers and Registered Plumbers and Registered Gasfitters have their own registration systems — architects with the New Zealand Registered Architects Board, engineers with IPENZ Engineers New Zealand and plumbers and gasfitters with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board.

If you want to do restricted building work to your own house you can, but if you are unlicenced you will need to be supervised by a Licenced Building Practitioner.

Restricted Building Work regulations have now come into effect — as of March 1, 2012 and these apply to most residential buildings or renovation work, meaning only a licenced building practitioner (LBP)can undertake or supervise the work involved
