Feilding Farmers’ Market wins again

by Denise Gunn

The award recognises community support and involvement in local farmers’ markets with customers around New Zealand voting for both their favourite market and a preferred stallholder. Feilding won the award against much larger markets in other regions.

The Feilding Farmers’ Market was established by Feilding Promotion’s Community Development team and is held every Friday in Manchester Square from 9am–2pm.

Following last year’s win, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, included a visit to Feilding’s Farmers’ Market in November as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

Feilding Promotion project manager Raewyn Loader said the Feilding Farmers’ Market has great stalls, products, stallholders, customers, location, and management, all

For the second year in a row, Feilding has won the New Zealand Farmers’ Market of the Year Award.

Feilding has won the 2013 New Zealand Farmers’ Market of the Year award

contributing enormously to the vibrancy of the town.

“Winning the National Farmers’ Market Award is a stunning achievement.

“The win will once again put Feilding on the map and place our market as one of the great attractions for visiting this region.”

The official announcement was made at the New Zealand Farmers’ Market dinner in Lyttelton.

“Congratulations to the team, stallholders, management, volunteers and of course our customers” said Ms Loader.

As a result of winning the Taste Farmers’ Market award two years running, Feilding will host the 2014 Taste Farmers’ Market Awards Dinner and Conference.

Ms Loader said Feilding looks forward to hosting the event and there are plans to do something a bit different to add Feilding Farmers’ Market’s unique flavour to this prestigious annual event.

The Whanganui Farmers’ Market division of Whanganui River Traders were voted runner-up in the New Zealand Farmers’ Market Award. Established just 10 months ago, the Whanganui Farmers’ Market is held in conjunction with the Whanganui River Traders each Saturday from 9am–1pm on Moutoa Quay.

Around 40 independently owned and operated farmers markets’ are held around New Zealand with an estimated 50,000 customers supporting them each week.

Taranaki Tree Trust calling for applications

by Denise Gunn

The Taranaki Tree Trust is calling for applications for the second and final funding round for 2013. Administered by the Taranaki Regional Council, the Taranaki Tree Trust is a charitable trust supporting the region’s ecosystems and landscapes.

The trust makes grants to assist landowners and community groups to maintain, restore and protect wetland areas, native bush remnants and habitats for threatened species. Grants to enhance community areas, such as schools, reserves and maraes, through amenity planting are also available.

Taranaki Tree Trust co-ordinator Leigh Honnor said the trust has been supporting planting projects in the Taranaki for 20 years.

“We are proud to contribute to the restoration work being undertaken in our community.

“We encourage people with planting projects to apply for funding as we are here to get alongside them and share the cost.”

One application per financial year, which runs from July 1 to June 30, can be made to the trust with grants between $300 and $5,000 available. All funding applications are considered individually and the trustees retain the right to grant funds in greater or lesser amounts.

The trust will contribute up to 75 percent of the total cost of a school or community project, and up to 50 percent for a project on private land.

The total cost includes cash and the dollar value of any in kind contributions such as labour. Grants must be used by successful applicants within two years.

The Taranaki Tree Trust is currently working on a booklet titled ‘Restoration planting in Taranaki — A guide to the Egmont Ecological Region’.

From left: Colt and Sean Gardiner planting at Matenehunehu Stream

Mrs Honnor said this booklet will provide the foundation for restoration planting projects.

“Copies will be available free from the trust and you will also be able to download a copy from our website in September.”

Application forms for funding can be downloaded from the Taranaki Tree Trust’s website www.taranakitreetrust.org.nz or email Mrs Honnor at [email protected]

The final funding round for applications this year closes on September 1.

goHarness Syndication is owned and managed by Noel Kennard, an Authorized Public Syndicatoras per the Rules of Harness Racing New Zealand and the N.Z. Commerce Commission.

...making racehorse ownership

FUN and AFFORDABLE

by Kent Caddick

in fact to be more accurate it is Double the Fun as that is what the syndicate is called.

West Melton’s Noel Kennard broke the mould of horse racing syndication in 2012 when he launched his In It For Fun syndicate with 420 punters taking a piece in the syndicate and its horse Franco Harrison.

The new Double the Fun syndicate will feature two horses and there are 1000 syndicate shares on offer and each individual syndicate share can have up to five members.

“Up until the In It For Fun syndicate horse racing syndicates were usually four or five people getting together to buy a horse and share in the training

costs and possibly any stake money the horse would win,” Kennard says.

“The reality is very few people make money out of that type of syndicate and with Harness Racing New Zealand looking to encourage people to get involved in the industry, whether as owners or punters, syndication needed to change.”

Kennard’s concept is simple, you buy a share in a syndicate for a one-off cost for a two-year duration. There are no ongoing costs involved and at the end of the two-year period the horse is sold and syndicate members share in the proceeds as well as any stake money the horse has earned.

“This is not a get rich quick scheme this is about having fun and being

involved in the thrill of racing,” he says. Kennard is an Authorised Syndicator and has been vetted by both Harness Racing New Zealand and the Commerce Commission under whose rules and regulations he has to operate.

In the 1980s he got involved in the breeding industry and after spending some time in the North Island returned to the South Island and set up a stallion station on a 20-acre property at Weedons.

During this time he forged a relationship with one of Canterbury’s major studs, Wai-Eyre Farm near Ohoka, and began to focus on using New Zealand bred stallions to stand rather than importing stallions from the United States, and has been closely associated

with the success of New Zealand bred siring sensation Christian Cullen.

Over the years Kennard became less involved in the actual stud work and began to increase his involvement in the marketing and promotional side of the breeding industry.

That was when he hit on the idea of creating a syndicate with a large number of participants paying a one-off fee over a two-year period.

This led to the birth of the In It For The Fun syndicate. Initially 500 hundred shares were put up and two weeks later when the offer closed 420 people had signed up for the syndicate and its horse Franco Harrison.

Franco Harrison has won two races and placed in several others in the year the syndicate has been running.

“Syndicate members have emailed me and said they have already got their

money’s worth. At race meetings they all wear In It For Fun/Franco Harrison tags and through that are meeting new friends who are also part of the syndicate.

“I recently had an email from a Christchurch woman who says she was on a stopover in Dubai and got talking to another New Zealander and found that this person was also a member of the Franco Harrison syndicate. What are the chances?

“That is what this type of syndication is all about, having fun and meeting people.”

The new Double the Fun syndicate has already secured one horse, now with southland trainer Hamish Hunter, and the second horse, once it has been purchased, will be going to Weedons trainer Nigel McGrath.

In the ten years since purchasing their Utuwai farm in the northern Pohangina Valley, Tony and Lynda Gray have experienced floods, snowfalls, droughts and a windstorm.

But despite these extreme weather events the couple have managed to turn their property

into a successful sheep, beef and deer breeding/finishing unit.

The couple bought their 410ha (275ha effective) medium hill country

FARMING THROUGH EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS

by Denise Gunn

The Gray family on their 410ha Pohangina Valley farm

property in 2003, with takeover just after the February 2004 floods.

Tony said they’ve experienced every extreme in the nine years they’ve lived on the farm and don’t yet know what an average season is.

“Since we have been at Utuwai, there have been five dry/drought summers, and we thought that we had purchased a farm in a summer safe area.”

Originally from the Rangitikei, Tony was fourth generation of a Marton family farming on a 100ha finishing and cropping operation. A further 125ha neighbouring property was leased to create a more economic unit.

When the owner of the lease block sold the property, Tony and Lynda decided to offer their farm for sale as well.

The couple headed overseas for six months and on their return bought the Utuwai property.

Located near the Ruahine Ranges, the farm sits on predominantly Whetukura silt loam soil and receives an average rainfall of 1,200mm.

Farm improvements and maintenance have been ongoing.

Initially the farm received fertiliser every year. More recently this has been reduced to a bi-annual application.

Twenty hectares of stony flats were stone-picked to enable direct drilling. And a ford stream crossing was also created to allow vehicle access and ground spreading of fertiliser.

Tony said all farm tracks and dams are regularly maintained and upgraded.

Following the devastation throughout the lower North Island caused by the 2004 storm, Horizons Regional Council formed the Sustainable Land Use Initiative (SLUI) in an attempt to reduce hill country erosion and assist with flood protection further downstream on the plains.

A Whole Farm Plan was developed and implemented under SLUI as a tool to identify sustainable resource management and sustained business growth opportunities on farms. A land management expert and farm consultant work alongside farmers who have volunteered to be a part of the scheme.

Tony and Lynda were the first to take up the offer and planted six hectares of Douglas Fir production forestry. Poplar poles are planted on an annual basis. Scrub has also been allowed to regrow to stabilise some hillsides.

In 2011 the couple retired another 52ha of regenerating land to add to an area of the farm under a QEII covenant. This required 2.5km of fencing and another 1km of deer fencing was completed last year to form a new lane and further subdivision. The total area now covered under a QEII covenant is 125ha.

A total of 1,050 Romney ewes, 300 ewe hoggets, 290 breeding hinds, 60 Angus breeding cows and 40 R1 cattle are currently run on the farm.

Lambing begins mid-September, the cows calve mid-October and fawning usually starts mid-November.

Tony said their lambs are sold to either Canterbury Meat Packers or Silver Fern Farms and the cattle are sold as weaners or finished.

“All deer are sold at weaning to a finisher as we are shareholders in Firstlight Venison.”

Tony said the major challenge on the farm, other than the climate, is the huge variability in product prices over the last couple of years.

Supplementary feed in the form of swedes and kale for winter, and pasja, rape and plantain for summer is usually grown.

“With the very dry conditions this year we did

not put in a winter crop and will be relying on an oat crop for cattle for late winter/early spring,” said Tony.

“We usually buy in baleage to feed to hinds and cows over winter, and this year bought 15 tonne of PKE/barley to supplement the hinds through the drought.”

Tony and Lynda both work on the farm and are actively involved in various committees.

Tony is on the Western North Island Beef and Lamb NZ Farmers Council, the Manawatu/Rangitikei

Federated Farmers Provincial Committee, Manawatu/Rangitikei Rural Family Support Trust, the Central Districts Deer Farmers, and governance committee for a Sustainable Farming Fund Project.

Lynda handles all the farm paper work, annual accounts preparation and tax. She is also on the Awahou

School Board of Trustees.

The couple have two daughters, Rebecca (13) and Catherine (8).

Farm improvements continue on an ongoing basis with plans to further improve productivity, poplar pole planting, fencing off waterways and riparian planting.

Tony said they also intend to improve water reticulation to reduce reliance on dams.

In the long term, the couple would like to utilise more of the deer fenced area, increase soil fertility in the hills, plant more production forestry and fence off wetland areas.

Co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential for energy and a defi ciency will can make us abnormally tired with weak muscles. As an antioxidant it also prevents dangerous oxidation of cholesterol trapped in artery walls which is the fi rst cause of the plaques that restrict coronary blood fl ow.

We produce CoQ10 less effi ciently as we age. The creeping tiredness that affects us later in life can be from insuffi cient CoQ10. Statin medications also reduce CoQ10 and is often responsible for many of the side effects including muscle weakness, pain and general malaise. Some problems especially autoimmune and neurological disease seem to lower CoQ10 levels possibly through increased demand from the disease processes.

Most healthy people under 50 do not need CoQ10 supplements as we effi ciently make all the CoQ10 we need. However, increasing age and some diseases make a strong case for controlled supplementation. I include it as nutritional support for most circulatory problems and many neurological and autoimmune diseases including Parkinson’s, MS, CFS, FM and PMR that all cause low energy. I regard it as essential when taking cholesterol medications to protect against muscle problems, fatigue and memory loss.

For example I recently created a programme for someone with MS and she has noted a distinct improvement in her energy and general well being.

I add CoQ10 either as a separate patented US sourced product or as part of my own energy formula with CoQ10, B vitamins, resveratrol, lipoic acid and many other energy co factors. Contact me for advice. My online newsletter at www.johnarts.co.nz has the full version of this column.

Succession PlanningSuccession planning is critical to growing and sustaining the family farm. But where to start?

Accept Change: Succession planning will always involve change. Change can be challenging and diffi cult but not accepting it can be prejudicial to the whole family.

Start Now: Give some thought to what your intentions and goals are and ask how these can be achieved as soon as possible. The best succession plans will be developed over a long period of time through the whole family openly discussing matters.

Identify Needs: Identify the parent’s expectations for retirement and the children’s expectations for succession early on. What assets and income do the parents need for retirement? What assets and income do children need to buy into the farm?

Structure farmland and business ownership: Consider diversifying farm land and business ownership, such as having a company, trust or limited partnership own the farm land and another entity owning the farm business so that these interests can be easily transferred to the new generation.

Hand over the reins: Parents need to recognise when to hand over management of the farm to children. Hanging on for too long can limit growth and impair equity.

Bring in the help: Parents and children should talk to independent lawyers, farm consultants, accountants and bankers. These professionals should talk to each other to make sure the plan will work.

Put a timeline in place: Pick an appropriate date to work towards — don’t let the plan stall!

Consider Debt: Can the farm sustain another family coming in and still build equity?

Comprehensive consideration should be given to all bank debt, guarantees and fi nance in relation to the farm land and business. Is the plan fi nancially sustainable?

Consider non-farming children: How will the interests of non-farming children be catered for? Is this consistent with their legal entitlements?

Other matters: Consider protecting the family farm from erosion of capital from relationship breakdowns by having children enter into relationship property agreements.

Consider wills and memoranda of wishes, enduring powers of attorney, and checking that there is appropriate insurance cover with an independent insurance consultant. Parents should also consider the possibility of creating off-farm income sources.

Write it down: A documented and binding succession plan will provide certainty and peace of mind for all involved, and if required can provide fl exibility.

Consider the alternatives: Sometimes the best solution for all concerned will be to sell the farm i.e. the best succession is no succession at all.

Award winning hospitalityExceptional service has earned Himatangi Beach Holiday Park owners the 2013 AA Spirit of Hospitality Award for Excellence in Holiday Parks.

Owners Margaret and Dennis Penney received the award at the Holiday Accommodation Parks Association of New Zealand (HAPNZ) Conference in Masterton last month.

AA Tourism chief executive Moira Penman presented the award and said the Himatangi Beach Holiday Park stood out because of the strong bonds the Penneys formed with their guests.

“I was especially impressed with the reviews recalling Margaret’s ability to meet a guest and then consistently greet them by name for the duration of their stay,” Ms Penman says. “Staying at a holiday park or camping ground is a Kiwi tradition and an experience that often leaves lifelong memories. Dennis and Margaret’s ability to make their guests feel at home, while providing activities to entertain families during their stay leaves a lasting impression on their visitors.”

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be

operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through

to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

Milking the Fonterra storyComment by Paul Campbell

The saga is still unfolding at the time of writing, but the fallout has already registered in a drop in dairy product prices on the world platform.

As we go to press, there are still a myriad conflicting stories and comment. From a dirty pipe in a provincial factory in New Zealand, we have been led to a ‘first’ discovery of the infant formula powder problem across the Tasman.

While the crisis unfolded, the fact was that it beggars belief that it took so long for our farmer-owned company to react. This writer remembers a student stint in a paint factory in Auckland.

Before any batch of paint was even sent to the canning plant, it was sampled in the on site laboratory, obviously for quality, and a clearance was issued. It was not rocket science!

The fallout from of the Fonterra debacle can be measured in the world’s media and it’s headlines.

A major news agency carries reports that ‘New Zealand’s environmental credentials are not as impeccable as many would think.

‘The majority of its rivers are too polluted to swim in. Its record on preservation of natural environments is

New Zealand has sold itself to the world as a clean and green source of dairy products and the events this month have seriously sullied our reputation.

AgResearch preliminary tests are looking positive for the Clean Green Effl uent Co. System. Testing has indicated that the super low application system will cause no environmental ill effects even in the winter.

We start by fi ltering out the solids through a patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid

portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash. This fresh green water is recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water. This reduces total fresh water consumption to about 20lt/cow/day instead of the normal 50 to 70lt/cow/day. As we are now only using 20lt/cow we only have to deal with 20lt/cow per day for storage and distribution to land.

The unique distribution system was designed for all soil types as its super low application depth (0.25mm or ¼ mm) can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run-off. This totally automated system removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems. The super low application depth allows for application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at fi eld capacity.

As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy effl uent virtually all year round the storage requirement is minimal. The system utilises two 33,000 litre water tanks for total storage.

The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall farm dairy effl uent having to be applied to land. The patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain this problem-free effl uent system.

among the worst in the world on a per capita basis’.

While the world’s media enjoys a free rein in the slanging stakes, it must be said that our food safety regimes are some of the world’s toughest, and that’s the double edged sword we are dealing with at present. The infant formula contaminated only appeared because of stringent testing regimes.

This writer has to wonder, just how much modern science contributes to economic panic, as mere suspicion turns into consumer rejection. But that’s of course a cynical view.

No environmental harmA D V E RT O R I A L

John Deere Gator XUV series available from Octoberby Denise Gunn

With a wide body, low centre of gravity and long wheel base, the Gator offers stability, with or without cargo on-board. These elements, coupled with power steering and a double-wishbone suspension, provide superior handling and a smoother ride. Most uneven surfaces can be covered effortlessly with a ground clearance of 27.94cm.

This new series is also designed to reduce body-roll, providing enhanced driver comfort. Three-point seat belts ensure riders are safe and secure.

A dynamic engine braking system for Gators has been developed by John Deere’s United States-based designers. This system offers an improved stopping performance over previous models, increased safety on hills, and less wear and tear on brake pads, resulting in lower maintenance costs.

The Gator XUV series offers three traction modes. Its 2WD option offers greater manoeuvrability, a simple flip of the dash-mounted switch locks the rear differential, or for maximum traction on challenging terrains there is a full on-demand true 4WD option.

A cargo box measuring a generous 0.46m3, with 453kg of cargo capacity provides plenty of room for transporting supplies, either around the farm or

The ability of John Deere’s new Gator XUV series to tackle heavy-duty jobs and cover rough terrain, makes it an ideal workhorse. And with plenty of new design features, the new XUV series continues to build on the reliability and safety John Deere is renowned for.

You may also need a resource consent if your project has an impact on the environment. You can access details information from the websites of your local council.

New rules came into effect in 2012 which apply to projects containing restricted building work critical to the integrity of a building by ensuring that it is structurally sound and weather-tight.

Most building projects require a building consent before any work is started. The consent includes not only the building work but also any work related to site preparation, plumbing or drainage.

If you do not obtain a building consent before starting work, it will cause problems later in the project and may also lead to anybody involved as property owners or tradespersons facing prosecution.

You do not need to apply for a building consent if your project is covered by an exemption. However all building work undertaken must comply with the New

What about building consents?Building consents confirm that plans and specifications for proposed building work meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code, and ensure that any building work is safe, durable and does not endanger the health of property owners and users. Examples of exempt building works include decks less than 1.5 metres above ground level, a garden shed less than 10sq metres and at least its height from the boundary, fencing less than 2.5 metres high, carports not exceeding 20sq metres and even playground equipment, used by a single household, that is less than three metres above the ground.

With the changing demands of children, lifestyle, work — and of course one’s ever-evolving aesthetic senses — sometimes it’s time to give your home the stylistic change it deserves, bringing it into line with your own vision of the perfect environment.

Whether it’s time to make bold changes, or simply to brighten the tone of your home, a smart fi rst move is to talk to someone who knows the nuances of style, colour, shape and texture — an interior design professional like Lian Brownson.

Lian’s strong background in the business of design and ‘home makeovers’ gives her a unique insight into the possibilities of varied spaces.

“With my expertise of blending and creating interiors, I work with clients to

refl ect their needs by listening to and observing their homes and lifestyles,” she says.

“It’s always best to talk and look through ideas with someone that can listen to you and to your needs, creating an environment you can call home.”

As a result, there is a growing need in many older houses to upgrade the electrical wiring. This is one area when DIY is not an option. But there are steps you can take before the electrician — with his professional licence, moves in.

Carry out an electrical inventory, creating a list of all the devices you’ll be using in the house, and where. Your electrical system needs to match your needs — figuring out where and how you’ll be using power makes it easier to draw up a plan for the job.

Then check with the local council to see what permits and standards you must comply with. Failing to get permits can result in having to pull out finished work, but your electrician should take care of the legal side for you.

Decide whether you want to run just electrical, or data, fire, and security as well. Modern wiring doesn’t just carry electricity, and wireless systems

are getting increasingly cheaper and more sophisticated.

Once you’ve done your initial homework, sit down and create a list of what you want done and when you want it completed, but be flexible too — surprises invariably show up when you’re digging deep into an old house structure.

And it’s probably a good idea to find an electrician who knows and understands older buildings because it can prove to be a complex, demanding, and difficult process.

It’s also a good idea to include demolition and reconstruction as an integral part of the job. If dealing with the damage done by rewiring isn’t at or near the top of your list, you’re asking for trouble.

It is a good thought to make clean-up and restoration as important as the

There are fittings available on the market that reflect the appearance and the feel of almost any era, while providing modern standards of safety that will be streets ahead of you old fittings.

use, water saving, waste management and even what kind of plants have been planted in the garden.

The house was cleverly designed by Matt Janes at PAK Design with energy effi ciency top of mind and built at the highest level of quality by local company Humphries Construction. Vert-X Structural Engineers provided the structural consultancy and ARIDON limited installed the ARIDON insulated weather-protection on the walls.

Christina Gomes, Managing Director of ARIDON Ltd says that if you were to build according to the building code, you would achieve around only four stars. However working closely with the right team and the right materials from the outset can mean a far superior result in terms of look, comfort, healthier living and long term fi nancial benefi ts.

In Europe, America and Canada everyone talks about the benefi ts of better insulation — expanded polystyrene ‘Outsulation’ is becoming

Constructing a home that is well insulated and dry, is the best way for a homeowner to have a healthy, comfortable home, and save money in the long term.

The revolutionary ARIDON® system, is a Kiwi invention and turns traditional ideas about insulation inside out — literally. The rigid water-resistant panels interlock together on the outside of a building’s frame to form a seamless blanket of insulation and weatherproofi ng — providing far superior insulation to traditional cavity systems. This does away with the need for traditional building wrap, cavity battens, insulation and tapes/sealants. External cladding is then placed over this insulated, weatherproof layer.

The fi rst ARIDON® clad house in Palmerston North has recently been awarded the only six star energy effi cient rating home in the region, under the Homestar eco-rating scheme. The six star rating takes into account energy

more mainstream in Europe and Canada and proven over the past decade to be one of the most effective means of energy effi ciency.

In theory we shouldn’t need to install all these heat pumps and HRV systems if we designed our houses to maximise sunlight and optimise the use of insulation. According to Barack Obama: “If you saw $20 bills just sort

of fl oating through the window up into atmosphere you’d try to fi gure out how you were gonna keep that, but that’s exactly what’s happening because of the lack of effi ciency in our buildings.” (15 Dec 2009).

This six star property is for sale through JVL (4 Doncaster Court) and will be auctioned on September 25 if it has not sold before then.

PASTURE preparationNutrition — the life enhancer

by John K Morris

We eat food for its nutrient value to keep ourselves alive and energised, but what happens when the food we eat has no nutritional value?

We get no value from that food, worse than that, the cells in our bodies that look after us do not recognise food that has no value, they don’t know what to do with it, so they just store it in the body. Today, especially in the USA due to the lack of minerals in food, people weighing 200 kilos and more are dying from malnutrition while surrounded by food that has no nutritional value, but is engineered to be addictive.

According to Dr Melchoir Dikkers, professor of Biochemistry at Loyola University (Los Angeles) malnutrition is the most important problem confronting mankind at the present time. The United States, despite its boasted food production, is grossly undernourished and although per capita the expenditure on healthcare in the USA is the highest in the world, so is the incidence of cancer, obesity, heart and circulatory diseases.

Amazingly, Dr Joseph Weissman, associate professor of the UCLA College of Medicine, a specialist in preventative medicine and immunology, has discovered that nearly all the non-infectious diseases that presently plagues mankind, are of origin, developed during the 20th century. Billions of dollars spent on research, newer diagnostic

techniques, organ transplants, coronary by-pass procedures, chemotherapy, radiation and all various drugs, have not altered the advance of these killer diseases, but instead have merely enriched the chemists and medical practioners.

These diseases refl ect malnutrition. Malnutrition begins in the soil. Today’s soils are tired, depleted, sick, poisoned by synthetic chemicals and void of minerals. Minerals in the soil control the metabolism of cells in plants, animal and man. Diseases are created chiefl y by destroying the harmony reigning among mineral substances present in infi nitesimal amounts in air, water, food, but most importantly in soil.

Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are designed to bring minerals, microbes and health and vitality back to the soil. All life is dependent upon the soil! So by getting the soil right that health and vitality in the soil will permeate through to all life above the soil — to plants, animals and people. It is not only a simple system it is effective.

The lack of minerals in our soils today is the result of toxic nutrient defi cient chemical fertilisers, so, if you want to turn your farm around you need to work on your soil and that’s where Agrissentials begins by turning your soil into a live, living, breathing, pulsating, energy rich soil full of minerals, micro-organisms and health.

Go on, call Agrissentials’ agents today, you won’t regret it!

PASTURE preparationSoil Matters

with Peter Burton

Over recent times there has been much debate around the topic of ‘biological farming’.

Why all growing systems are essentially ‘biological’

As little if any nutrient enters a plant without first going through a biological process, all growing systems regardless of the label applied to them are essentially biological systems.

The most important issue presently, and is the one at the heart of the debate around different growing systems, is the use of fertiliser nitrogen.

Excess fertiliser nitrogen reduces the humus content of soil and when used regularly to promote growth, total pasture production steadily declines.

Recent work from AgResearch shows an 18% decline in pasture growth in the

second season after establishment of new pasture.

What we often observe is that where there is a dependence on nitrogen fertiliser, by the end of the fifth year the gaps between grass plants have steadily increased, a significant number of plants have been lost due to pulling in autumn, excess rain ponds for longer periods and total growth reaches a level where regrassing becomes the only option.

What is now well understood is that at least half of applied fertiliser nitrogen does not enter the targeted plant. Some is lost direct to the

atmosphere with the remainder finding its way into groundwater, and Ministry of the Environment figures show a steady increase in Nitrate-N levels in areas where intensive dairy farming is carried out.

Fertiliser nitrogen can be a useful tool; it’s the dependence on it that needs to be sorted. We only have to look to growing systems in Europe to know that its future use will be increasingly regulated. Farmers have the choice to modify their systems now, or wait until regulation arrives and other people start making decisions for them.

To know whether a property has a dependence on fertiliser nitrogen simply stop applying it, all of it.

If the result is less growth then there’s a dependency issue, it’s a simple test for any addiction, and the addiction to fertiliser nitrogen is evidenced by urea silos on farms. But it doesn’t have to be.

The use of DoloZest and CalciZest, soil improvers sold under the Functional Fertiliser brand are being increasingly used to successfully replace fertiliser nitrogen.

The measures collected over a number of years from the Berryman property, an intensive dairy operation near Edgecumbe, using a DoloZest/CalciZest based total nutrient programme, show total pasture growth based on Overseer to have been in

excess of 19 tonne for each of the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons.

Pasture cages showed growth for the same seasons to be 18.4 and 18.3 tonne respectively, with less than 20kgN/ha applied each year. Total milk solid production was in excess of 1,300kg/ha from an average of 200 cows, with around 20% of the total feed being bought in.

Long strong stemmed clovers flourish throughout the major growing season providing exceptional growth of calves and contribute significantly to the 0.87:1 protein to fat ratio of the milk produced.

Clover flea and weevil under close examination can still be found however given the health of the clover damage is minimal.

Careful digging and sifting also turns up the occasional grass grub and beetle larvae but again too few to cause damage. Total nitrogen tests showed 9,400kgN/ha in the top 30cm of the soil with 200kg N/ha available for plant use at the time of testing.

With increased carbon sequestered each year and more humus formed, a steady increase in pasture growth and total farm production can be expected, and with measuring continuing more data will be made available.

“Are you tired of going

backwards?”

Kiwi Fertilisers’ major focus is to build and maintain superior fertility to as many farms and horticultural properties as possible. The base of our soil fertility programme, when possible, is to add a carbon source to every custom blend supplied; primarily this is in the form of modest amounts of good quality compost.HumusHumus is the substance that drives healthy, productive soils. Humus is created by soil microbes, and serves as the living quarters for this vital workforce. Humus is the soil glue and provides the most e cient storage of water, minerals and carbon; it is this trio that will most impact soil health, human health and planetary health in the coming years. The reclamation of humus is the shape of the future or we may face a grim future.Compost as a humus & carbon sourceCompost provides primary nutrients as well as trace minerals, humus and humic acids in a proportion that almost matches plant requirements. Compost is a food source for

earthworms, bene cial insects and micro-organisms that improve soil structure and prevents disease e.g. compost contains nematode-destroying and other bene cial fungi that prevent many plant diseases. It helps tight clay soil become friable and to breathe. It helps sandy soil hold more water and nutrients while helping to unlock previously unavailable minerals.Obtaining an active Organic Matter SystemComposting is the biological reduction of organic wastes into humus. It is a natural process used to return nutrients contained in organic materials that were once alive in the soil. Compost is composed of complex carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, peptides, humic acids, fulvic acids, enzymes and bene cial microorganisms. It contains growth-promoting hormones for plants that encourage

the development of an extensive healthy root system (wider & deeper), which helps plants tolerate drought conditions, insects and disease. It is not usefully measured in N-P-K units.Compost acts as a bu er against chemicals and assists absorption and breakdown of heavy metals by plants. Microbes in compost break down hazardous chemical pollutants, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, and helps bu er soils against extremes in acidity or alkalinity. When we use compost, the soils become healthier, so plant and animal health also improve at an accumulating rate. Using quality mature compost helps sequester carbon in the soil, measured by Pro t Focused Farming on average, at 6% over three years.

Kiwi Fertilisers’ major focus is to build and

We live in a time when walls are falling. We are seeing the rise of the knowledge era. The power of the internet and the borderless economy allows us to study books and documents from the men and women who have observed and studied nature. In particular, those who have analysed soils globally, discovered and written the truth. Those that have used plain common sense to produce healthy crops and animals free of corruption and propaganda of the industrial giants pushing their own agenda to promote their baseless self-interest and greed at the expense of the majority of producers in the world. The chemical acid superphosphate manufacturing plants around the various ports of NZ are relics of a bygone Industrial mind-set era; they are well past their used-by date.Kiwi Fertiliser was formed primarily to change the face of New Zealand agriculture. We have responded to the call of forward thinking farmers who have become

disillusioned with declining dry matter production and increasing ill-health of animals, whilst the Industry continues to hand out more of the same.Biological farming and the Albrecht-Kinsey model of soil fertility has proven sound science behind it. Last week a group of 21 New Zealand delegates attended a three day Neal Kinsey Advanced 1 Soil Fertility Workshop at Sale, Victoria; followed by a day in the eld with Albrecht-Kinsey soil fertility and nutrition advisor Peter Norwood on properties where he consults. They are making similar increases in production that we see here in NZ. On average, you can expect a 35% improvement over 3-5 years. There is sound science behind our programme, the course is very intense and teaches the delegates how much of each nutrient is required to maintain healthy soils; the mathematics required and the speci c interactions of nutrients relating to nutrient de ciencies and excesses.

Pollution — living with legislationby Dr Lucy Waldron Independent Consultant, LWT Animal Nutrition Ltd

In the last couple of years there has been a lot of focus on the levels of pollution, especially nitrogen from dairy cows, which has resulted in new legislation limiting the levels of nitrogenous material entering water courses.

When nitrogen levels become high in ground water, it enters streams and rivers, leading to toxic algae growth and reducing the quality of the water substantially.

Nitrogen is principally excreted via the urine from cows, and levels are dictated by the amounts that are fed and the form they are fed in. Commonly in New Zealand, dairy cows are predominantly

kept on grassland, with maybe some supplementary fibre-based feeds. However, the number of farmers feeding a total mixed ration, ie a complete and balanced diet where grass nutritional quality has also been taken into account, are relatively few compared to other regions such as Europe.

Like all other animals, cows need correct, balanced levels of nutrients within their diet to ensure optimum body maintenance, growth (in heifers), health, reproduction and lactation.

As part of that, protein — the nitrogen source from feed — is very important as it is responsible for maintaining body condition, calf growth in utero, muscle, organs, hooves, hair and connective tissue, immune function and milk protein during lactation.

Interestingly, up to 60% of consumed protein in cows can be lost in urine if it is not fed as part of a completely balanced diet and if the animal, due to poor early nutrition as a calf, has reduced rumen efficiency.

Protein is regarded as an expensive part of the diet, whether from feeds or

from pasture. Pasture nitrogen/protein levels are dictated by fertiliser and labour costs associated with good grassland management.

In New Zealand, dairy paddocks contain mostly rye-clover pastures, which are relatively high in sugar and protein and low in fibre. However all cattle are evolutionarily adapted to consume large amounts of fibre, and rumen micro-organisms are primarily present to convert fibre into energy-rich volatile fatty acids (VFAs), which provide around 70% of the cow’s energy, and dictate the way protein is digested and utilised. Low levels of fibre intake can interfere with this system.

The rumen microbes need a stable, near neutral pH to do this efficiently. The synergistic relationship between the cow and its rumen microbes activity allows energy to be derived from fibre-rich feedstuffs, as mammals lacks the enzymes to break down fibre otherwise. Rye grass tends to be high in sugars and have low fibre levels, and, as a result, are quickly broken down in the rumen and cause low pH conditions from the acids produced by the sugar-activated bacteria.

Innovative cowshed designSpeeding the breeding processFabish and Jackson are the original designers of the innovative and highly reputable Octa-Lock Dairy Parlour.

A new breeding indicator, the Tru-Test MilkHub Heat Detection system — reduces labour, missed heats and captures key data.

Over the last 25 years they have modifi ed and developed their design to produce a high quality, functional, effi cient, and cost effective dairy parlour.

The Octa-Lock design suits the installation requirements for a rotary milking platform. Most buildings can be priced on a square metre rate, and on this basis, the Octa-Lock has a smaller building footprint than conventional buildings for a given turntable size.

The innovative roof structure is supported on eight poles, and the walls are suspended between them, with no footings required. This makes the installation of the drainage, water and power more straightforward and cost effective. The Octa-Locks built to date have housed turntables from 28 — 100 bales.

The kitset nature of the construction allows us to do most of the construction off site. We have the option to complete the

roof structure before the fl oors, reducing possible delays due to bad weather.

Our innovative design has allowed Fabish and Jackson (2010) Limited to hold a high market share of dairy parlours being built in Taranaki. We have built sheds throughout New Zealand, from Northland to Invercargill. We have also exported a 70 bale parlour to Wales, and a 30 bale to Chile.

Fabish and Jackson are a locally owned and operated company with over 30 years experience in the building industry. Based in Inglewood, a twenty minute drive south of New Plymouth, they currently have 25 highly trained and qualifi ed team members proudly working all over Taranaki.

Their reputation in Taranaki is that they are builders you can totally trust, who take pride in consistently providing the highest quality workmanship and service to their customers.

Current methods of heat detection rely heavily on staff knowledge to spot the signs of heat — a very manual and labour intensive process fi lled with risk. Even with high levels of observation, skill and knowledge, many heats are missed or AB straws wasted on cows wrongly identifi ed as ready.

Tru-Test Group Product Manager Shane Dooley says whilst there are support devices such as heat mount detectors available, automation enables farmers to gain huge benefi ts in labour effi ciencies and greater heat detection accuracy. “This was the main driver for Tru-Test in developing the MilkHub Heat Detection system,” he says.

“Using proven infra red overhead scanning technology (MilkHub Heat Scanner) and New Zealand designed and manufactured self adhesive refl ective patches (MilkHub Heat Detectors), the system improves on the benefi ts of using heat mount detectors by minimising the requirement for visual assessment during milking.

“Pressure from a mounting animal reveals a highly refl ective layer. Whilst still visually detectable, when a cow walks under the MilkHub Heat Scanner the infra red beam detects the extent the patch has been rubbed and indicates whether the cow needs to be checked or AB’d by a fl ashing light and audible beep,” Dooley explains.

The Milkhub Heat Scanner can also be integrated into the MilkHub Rotary system enabling automatic drafting of cows on heat.

“Staff don’t need to do a thing — cows that are on heat will be automatically detected and drafted and waiting in a pen after leaving the shed. In addition the drafting data will be automatically

captured in the MiHub Online Management tool providing a record of cow EID, heat detection timings and date, allowing closer management of breeding programmes.”

Whilst it is important to remember that all heat detection technologies still need to be used in conjunction with visual observation of recognised standing heat signs in cows and best practice, the MilkHub Heat Detection system, through automation, offers a steep change in reducing labour costs, risk of missing heat, and empty rates and increasing the likelihood of achieving tight calving patterns.

The system is suitable for herringbone and rotary operations.

Nothing was more successful than the Red Poll cross. With its dual purpose background the heifer progeny proved to be good milk producers with exceptional constitution when retained as replacements, while the males made competitive growth rate steers with excellent yield of high grade steaks showing none of the yellow fat problem associated with Jerseys.

At the end of the eighties I decided to register the Tamihana Red Poll Stud and hopefully improve the characteristics that already existed within the breed. It has been a challenge as during the period from then until now more inferior genetics have been imported into New Zealand than good stuff. The other obstacle was the inability to breed sufficient female progeny needed to increase herd numbers.

Since retiring from dairying in 1998 in the Waikato and moving to a dry-stock property in North Taranaki, my determination to move the breed forward has meant importing semen from performance tested bulls in the USA, England and Australia with the desired result being achieved. Birth weights are around 27kgs with weaning weights at six months, around 270kg.

A Red Poll World Congress Tour is held in a host nation every three years. The initial

by Robin ThomsonWhy choose Red Poll cattle?

tour was held in the native country of the breed (England) in 1972, with successive tours being held in Jamaica, Australia, USA, South America, (Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil) South Africa and New Zealand, where they have domiciled since 1898.

I have seen the cattle in most of these countries and have been impressed with the ability of Red Polls to adapt to an extremely diverse range of environments, from stall feeding to range grazing.

As a breed for crossing with others, they are noted for improving the milk flow in female progeny, which improves growth rate in the following generation. The male calves generally express superior length and consequently deceiving weights at maturity, with beef that is second to none for flavour and tenderness.

In the late seventies, when the advent of dairy-beef was becoming accepted and popular, I was share-milking a Jersey herd and set about researching beef breeds that were capable of producing acceptable progeny from the Jersey dams.

“We are issuing a hearty invitation to all of those people in New Zealand with connections to the town and it’s surrounding farming community to make a date to join us in our anniversary events,” says organising committee president, Albie  Paton. Registrations for

the 150th will begin at 3pm on the Friday followed by a ‘meet and greet’ at the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall and the opening of a time capsule from the town’s 1963 centenary.

On the Saturday, at 10.30am, there will be a settlers landing re-enactment and a powhiri at the

landing site in Bickerstaffe Road followed by a parade ‘through the ages’ to the Maungaturoto Country Club.
