• Sowing – 200 tray or smaller – Cover seed lightly if necessary – 3 to 5 days to germinate – Optimum temperature 20 to 25 ℃ – EC 0.5 – 20 day crop time in 288 tray

Plug Stage

Transplant Stage • Transplanting

– 15 to 20 days after sowing. • Not longer than 20 days!

– 2 to 3 true leaf stage – If transplanted late, plugs become stretched and floppy reducing

yield and uniformity • If plugs stretch, they can be planted deep, up to the

cotyledons to force them upright – Press the soil around the plants when transplanting, which helps

stem grow straight up – Water frequently after transplant to promote even growth – Reduce water after roots become established to promote thin,

hard stem

Page 9: Takii’s Cut- Type Flowering Kaletakii.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Brassica_Cut_Culture_ATI_2013_V1.pdf– 20 day crop time in 288 tray . Plug Stage . Transplant Stage • Transplanting

Life Cycle

– Week 0 – 3 • Plug stage: Low fertility and medium moisture

– Week 4 – 10 • Growth stage: Medium to high fertility and moisture

– Week 11-16 • Leaf coloring (flowering): Reduce fertilizer and moisture • Depending on temperature, stems may be ready to

harvest at 14 – 15 weeks. Lower temperatures force leaves to color faster.

Page 10: Takii’s Cut- Type Flowering Kaletakii.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Brassica_Cut_Culture_ATI_2013_V1.pdf– 20 day crop time in 288 tray . Plug Stage . Transplant Stage • Transplanting

Spacing

• Purpose of tight spacing – Strong, thin stem

(next page) – Early coloring – Longer stems – Save labor stripping

lower leaves (next page)

8 rows in one bed

10cm x 10cm

Page 11: Takii’s Cut- Type Flowering Kaletakii.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Brassica_Cut_Culture_ATI_2013_V1.pdf– 20 day crop time in 288 tray . Plug Stage . Transplant Stage • Transplanting

With greater than 10 x 10 cm spacing, it is necessary to strip the lower leaves when plants reach the 15 to 20 true leaf stage. If spacing is dense, leaves drop off naturally because of the lack of light. Water restriction will also encourage lower leaves to drop as plants reach maturity.

– Tight spacing reduces the need to strip lower leaves

- Thin, strong stems

*Left three are from 10 x 10 cm spacing, thinner than right

Cultivation/ Growing • Temperature

– Optimal grow ing temperature is 15-25℃ (59 – 77 F) – Optimal flow ering temperature is <13℃ (55 F)

• Fertilizer – For good coloring, fertilizer should be reduced for final 6

weeks before harvest – Nitrogen promotes green growth and reduces intensity of

flower color – Too much fertilizer can cause tight, cabbage like head – Feed moderate to heavy early as plants establish roots, then

back off feed as plants mature – The quantity of fertilizer depends on the environment

• Warm area - less required • Cool area – more required

Finishing and Harvest • Coloring

– Initiates after night temperature drops under 13℃ for 2 weeks. • Harvest

– Cut stems and remove lower leaves if necessary. • Leave 2 or 3 outer leaves around the top. • Sterile equipment is necessary to prevent bacterial contamination

Pot Cultivation of Takii’s Cut Varieties

• Schedule potted crops the same as cuts for sow and transplant

• Reduce temperatures earlier to induce coloring at a younger stage

• PGR – Flowering Kale is very responsive to Paclobutrazol.

• Plug Stage : 10 - 30 ppm spray when cotyledons are fully expanded will reduce stem stretch and produce high quality plugs

• Finish Stage: 2 – 4 ppm drench is recommended 4 – 6 weeks after transplant to encourage straight, strong stems and compact plants
