TAKEPART 2016 School Taster Programme 18 th June - 3 th July 2016 Celebrating and promoting active living, TAKEPART is the largest celebration of community sport and physical activity in the country. Brighton & Hove Council Sports Development Team have worked with local sports clubs and activity groups to offer a programme of opportunities to local schools through out the two week festival period. This is a chance for your school to engage with high quality community sport providers, to increase the range experience and opportunities for your pupils to take part in sports and physical activities as we seek to inspire and support a generation to enjoy sport and active lifestyles. Many of these sessions are being provided for free to your school, while other providers need to make a charge. Safeguarding: All clubs / groups have provided our team a copy of their safeguarding policy, confirming DBS checks on relevant staff have been undertaken and copies of their public liability insurance certificates covering their activities We recommend that you check for these with the coaches/organisations attending your school your school, along with a risk assessment of the activity they will be delivering in your school

Celebrating and promoting active living, TAKEPART is the largest celebration of community sport and physical activity in the country. Brighton & Hove Council Sports Development Team have worked with local sports clubs and activity groups to offer a programme of opportunities to local schools through out the two week festival period. This is a chance for your school to engage with high quality community sport providers, to increase the range experience and opportunities for your pupils to take part in sports and physical activities as we seek to inspire and support a generation to enjoy sport and active lifestyles. Many of these sessions are being provided for free to your school, while other providers need to make a charge. IMPORTANT: Please ensure that a member of staff is in attendance when the session is being delivered, as part of the agreement with the clubs / groups, a member of school staff must be in attendance throughout the session. If there are any other questions or concerns with these bookings please contact Brighton and Hove City Council Sports Development team on 01273 292729. How to book: Below are details of all the organisations who are interested in providing tasters and activities for local schools during TAKEPART. Some groups will come and deliver at your school, others are offering sessions at their nearby facilities. Many are free to your school, whilst for others there is a small charge. Clubs have said that they are willing to be flexible where possible so If you are interested in booking or any questions as to the content, class sizes etc please contact the activity provider directly using the details below. Please ensure that you place your bookings as early as possible to allow coaches and organisations time to prepare.

Description: Capoeira is a Brazilian art-form that combines the disciplines of dance, martial-arts and music. At an Amazonas Arts workshop you will awaken your body exploring its physicality. You will have the opportunity to try movements which develop balance, agility, strength and coordination. You will be invited to beat, shake, pluck, tap, clap and play Brazilian percussion instruments to create ensemble music. You will also dip into

traditional Afro-Brazilian stories, which tell of other times, peoples and places. Capoeira helps improve overall fitness, confidence and communication in a safe space that allows for self-expression within a group dynamic. At the end of the session there is a small performance from the instructors to demonstrate Capoeira.

Description: Brain Education is an innovative educational program designed to develop the full potential of the human brain. It is a progressive convergence of traditional Eastern practices for energy development and mindfulness and new findings from neuroscience and education. Distinctions of Brain Education include: Integrative approach to enhance physical, emotional, and mental well-being Developing a foundation for students to use their brain capabilities effectively. Experiential training for behavioural as well as cognitive changes. The BE program consists of physical, emotional, and cognitive exercises designed to improve focus, creativity, memory, confidence, stress management, and physical health. Training outcomes include significant positive changes in learning efficiency, motivation, self-esteem, peer relationships, anxiety, self-regulation, stress management, and levels of positive behaviour in the school and community.

Description: Experience a day of Beach Lifeguard training. The kids are taught safety in the ocean, basic life guarding skills (including the use of a rescue board, rescue tube and sea swimming techniques). competition played on sand in the purpose built Jeep Beach Sports Arena. The scheme which runs every day for the whole month of June is open to year groups 5 up to 8

Organisation: Brighton Ultimate

Sport/Activity Type

Ultimate Frisbee

Age Groups: Ages 8-11 (KS2); Ages 12-15 (KS3)

Cost: £25 per hour

Description: All pupils can get involved having fun catching and throwing soft-edged frisbees (provided by the BU coaches), working on skills, and playing the team game Ultimate Frisbee which encourages teamwork, catching/throwing skills, and athleticism! Ultimate is a rapidly growing, low-cost, mixed gender sport, which champions self-officiation and respect between players in a competitive environment. Through self-officiation, players learn communication skills, conflict resolution, responsibility, and the importance of fair-mindedness. As Ultimate involves a frisbee instead of a ball, the playing field is levelled, so all pupils can get involved by utilising their particular skillset. Catching, throwing, using space, communication and teamwork are all useful skills in the game, alongside running, jumping and diving after the frisbee. Anybody can pick up the game and have fun. Brighton Ultimate are the biggest Ultimate club in Europe. We work to create opportunities to play Ultimate in Brighton and introduce the game to beginners, as well as supporting local players and teams and providing coaches. Both local Universities have coached teams, and the top men's team are currently the 3rd best team in the UK - regularly competing on the international stage!

delivering the workshop (Male &Female). There is a brief introduction to the group. Children could be addressed in Spanish depending on the level. A short video will be shown after the introduction. Afterwards we will start to practice the steps to be used in a mini choreography to finish the session. Flamenco is a great way for children to exercise. It is fun and relaxed. Children will develop several important skills for their growth, such as motor skills, coordination, mental sharpness, physical strength, emotional and personal development. Boys and girls will discover another way of feeling and moving the body through flamenco and identify how to dance with their core energy: feminine for the girl and masculine for the boys as flamenco is all about femininity and masculinity. The dance is also another way of socializing with other children of their age group.

Description: A fun and engaging workshop designed for schools to introduce students to the culture, history and art that is Flamenco . Students will be taught simple techniques in Flamenco dance using different steps that will build into a short choreography. Ana will also encourage students to create Flamenco music using rhythmic hand clapping, stamping and clicking fingers as well as speaking spanish to count and also 'Jalear' (shout encouragement). The children learn so much about Spain's history and where Flamenco came from while interacting in a fun and imaginative way.

Cost: £20 per child

Description: We can arrange for taster sailing sessions onboard a 40' yacht from Brighton marina. This will involve practical, hands on work with the young people where we help them control the boat themselves - raising and adjusting sails, steering, ropework. Includes snacks! A chance to see Brighton from the sea and find out if they are interested in a longer trip. We can also provide shorter free sessions, like lunch onboard in the marina (without leaving the dock) or visit your school to do sailing related activities, like learning knots.

Description: Lifesaving is a recognised sport and although the majority of this is done in water we would like to promote to the schools the fun element of lifesaving whilst being able to teach water safety, self survival and rescue skills (both in and out the water). We can offer dry based activities including rope throwing and we can promote our club and what we do whilst at the schools as well as teaching basic first aid techniques.

Description: Forest School is a long-term, child-led approach to learning. We usually recommend a minimum programme of 6 -10 weekly sessions so this opportunity will just give schools a taste of what Forest School is all about. To include Forest School routines, sensory games, trails and tracking, bug hunts, plant and animal ID, animal homes. We will provide one instructor and all equipment but would expect the session to be supported by staff from the school, with a minimum ratio of 1:10.
