W elcome to San Joaquin Delta Community College District’s 83rd annual

graduation ceremony. Our Board of Trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, family, and friends gather today to celebrate and acknowledge the academic achievements of the Class of 2018. This day also provides an opportunity to thank family and friends who have supported these students in a host of ways as they have worked toward their goals.

Today’s milestone event is only the beginning of higher education for many of these students. Some will stop their education now to look for or return to work. We hope they will return later to pursue more educational opportunities.

Others will pursue a bachelor’s degree immediately because they aspire to professions that require education beyond the associate’s degree. Still others will go on for masters and doctoral degrees; they will become doctors, lawyers, accountants, professors, technicians, and public officials. All will use the knowledge and skills they have acquired while preparing for more educational and/or careers at Delta College.

The degrees conferred tonight signify that our graduates have the character, courage, and perseverance to achieve a challenging personal goal. Many are the first in their families to attain this level of education; they will serve as inspiration for others in their families.

Marina Khan Jeff Palmquist

Ms. Marina Khan started on her journey at San Joaquin Delta College in 2015 after graduating from Lodi High School. Although Khan was unsure about her major, she felt the need to help others around her. She was conflicted about her major and alternated between choosing Biology or Nursing, and finally chose Psychology. Also, Khan is the first female to attend college in her family. She wanted to further her education so she can repay her parents’ for their sacrifices that they made for her and her siblings. Khan is proud of her struggles and accomplishments because they have shaped her into the woman she is today.

Khan was on the Dean’s Honor Roll list in 2017. As she graduates from San Joaquin Delta College, she will be obtaining a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies: Social

Jeff is an Associate Superintendent for Aspire Central Valley and an adjunct instructor at Teachers College of San Joaquin. Jeff entered education as a teacher at San Joaquin County Court and Community Schools in 1997. In 1998, he joined Lodi Unified School District where he remained a teacher and assistant principal until he joined Aspire in 2012. He has recently been appointed the next Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education for Lodi Unified School District.

He is a founding teacher of Lodi High’s APPLE Academy (a California Partnership Academy preparing high school students for careers in Education). With the APPLE Academy, he is a recipient of the California School Board Association’s Golden Bell Award.

Khan plans to attend University of the Pacific in the Fall. After graduating with her Bachelors of Science in Psychology, Khan stated “I want to work with children and women who have mental health issues; and also be there for people who are in crisis – being the light through their tough situation”. The selflessness that Khan possess is what makes everyone admire her.

Khan would like to thank her Mom and Dad, her EOPS counselor Anita Gautam, and her former teacher from Lincoln Technical Academy, Mrs. Cheri Evans, for always supporting her and pushing her to do the best she can.

Jeff received an A.A. degree from San Joaquin Delta College, a degree in English from the University of California at Santa Barbara and an M.S. in Education from National University.

He is married to his high school sweetheart, Leah, and they have four children. He is a School Board Member for City Academy/City Impact in San Francisco, a Board Member for Lodi Parks, Recreation, and Community Services.

He states, “Delta College has played a pivotal role in my own growth and development. I am part of a third generation Delta College family. My parents met in a Delta College Chemistry class in 1973. As an educator, I have had the opportunity to partner with Delta College and Aspire Public Schools through Aspire’s early college program. My daughter is currently a Delta student through that program. In short, I love Delta College!”

ALPHA GAMMA SIGMA is the statewide Community College Honor Society. Graduating members of Alpha Gamma Sigma can be identified by the “gold stole” worn around their necks during the commencement ceremony. The purpose of Alpha Gamma Sigma is to foster, promote, maintain and organize scholarships; to develop programs offering cultural, social or enrichment experiences as part of the total experience of the college and community; and to emphasize the development of leadership, character, and judgment. Students attaining membership in Alpha Gamma Sigma must maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA), and must commit fifteen hours to a variety of college and community activities.

CAPS AND GOWNSTHE TRADITION of wearing caps and gowns at major academic events goes back to the monasteries of the Middle Ages, which were learning as well as worship centers. The clothing had a simple purpose; warmth, in what otherwise were cold and drafty stone buildings. In later centuries, as universities took over the educational role, the gowns became brighter and were often associated with a specific institution.

In 1895, a standardized dress code was established so that graduates of certain colleges and universities would wear the basic ceremonial clothing associated with each institution. The color of the tassel on the cap depicts the area of study, and graduates wear the tassel on the left side of the cap. The silk lining of the hood bears the color, or colors, of the institution from which the student graduated. The color of the velvet band around the hood indicates the discipline in which the wearer has earned his or her degree.
