    INTRODUCTION TO NOTREDAMEDENAMUR UNIVERSITY

    President’s Welcome If there is one single word that describes Notre Dame de Namur, that word is community. Like other universities, we are a community of teachers, scholars, and learners committed to excellence and dedicated to the pursuit of truth in the Catholic intellectual tradition. AtNDNU, we have a strong commitment toproviding high-quality professional educationthat will equipour graduates toimmediately take their place in society or prepare them formore advanced study. Thateducationis built ona liberalarts foundation that helps broaden students’ worldviewand develop critical thinking skills.

    But anequally strong commitment tothe Catholic social justice tradition and the Hallmarks of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur means thatwe are acutely aware ofthe needs of the larger society that surrounds our campus. Hence, NDNUalso seeks to develop in its students a deep commitment to becoming valued, contributing membersof whatever community inwhichthey findthemselves members as they go through life. And thatcommitmentbegins at our doorstep: the larger community that exists rightoutside the gates ofthe University, up and down the San Francisco Peninsula, and throughout theBay Area. Wetake ourresponsibilities to thatcommunity seriously;so seriously, in fact, that undergraduate students, staff, and faculty routinely devote 100,000 hours ormore a yearto a varietyof communityservice projects.

    Our engagement with the community goes beyond communityservice projects; NDNU has always been committed to giving our studentsthe opportunityto learn from, and give back to, the community in which they live by offering everything from community-basedlearning coursesto service opportunitiesand internshipswith local businesses as well as community service and other nonprofit organizations. In2007, we launchedthe Dorothy Stang Center for Social Justice and Community Engagement to be the focal point for the University’s communityengagement activities, including training of facultyand student leaders. Sr. Dorothywas a Sister of Notre Dame who was martyred in Brazil in February of 2005 for her work defending indigent farmers and the environment in theAmazon rain forest. Sheinspires us to continue the workof social justice. In recent years, wehave built anacademic planthat embeds community engagement in thefabric of theacademic environment through which ourstudents pass. Itis ourgoal to give

    every student—traditional day, undergraduate, evening intensive, and graduate—the opportunity tolearnfrom and contributein ameaningful way to thecommunity.

    The University, the third oldest in California, was founded in 1851 by the Sisters of Notre Dame, Catholic nuns from Namur, Belgium, who educated young women displaced by the French Revolution. Later, they established schools forwomen and children in Oregon and California atthe outset of the California GoldRush.

    Today, NDNU is afully accredited master's university with a student body of nearly 1800. TheUniversity is bigenoughtohost three separate schools—the College ofArts andSciences, the School of Business andManagement, and the School of Education and Psychology—offering 19 liberal arts andcareer preparationundergraduate programs, 9 graduate degrees, fourcredentials, and 1doctoral program yet it is small enough to boast a12-to-1student-teacherratio. Oursize allows our students to form strong, personal bonds with fellow students and teachers. Itis in those bonds thatcommunitybegins.

    Mission Statement Founded upon thevalues of theSisters of NotreDamedeNamur and rooted in the Catholic tradition, Notre Dame de Namur University serves its students andthe communitybyproviding excellent professional and liberal arts programs in which community engagement and the values of social justice and global peace are integral to the learning experience.NDNU is a diverse and inclusive learning community that challenges each member to consciouslyapplyvaluesand ethicsin his/her personal, professional, and public life.

    Vision Statement Notre Dame de Namur University will be recognized in the San Francisco Bay Areaas aleader in integrating communityengagement into high-quality academic programs. NDNU’s programs willbe widely known for theirinnovative synthesis ofliberal arts learning, professionally-orientedlearning, andcore values.

    History Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) is the only four-year accredited universityin San Mateo County.

    Foundedby the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in1851, NDNU is a Catholic, not-for-profit, coeducational institution serving about 1800 traditionalage and adult studentsfrom diverse backgrounds. The university isfully accredited and offers 34undergraduate,graduate,and teachercredential programs. The 50-acrecampus is located in the city of Belmont on the San Francisco Peninsulain Silicon Valley.

    The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur came to the San Francisco Bay Areafrom their mission schools in Oregon. While visiting the Bay Area they established an institute of higher learning, College of Notre Dame, inthe city of SanJose. The school was chartered in 1868 as the firstcollege in the state of California authorized to grant the baccalaureate degree towomen.

    The Sisters soon outgrew their facility in the South Bay and moved thecampus to Belmont in 1923. They purchasedRalstonHall, the country estate of William ChapmanRalston, SanFranciscofinancier andfounder of the Bank ofCalifornia. Ralston Hall became the center of the campus and in recentyears has been designated as a California Historical Landmark.

    Sincethen, theuniversity has undergonea number of changes. In 1955, College of Notre Dame began offering its first evening classes, followed by the introduction ofteaching credential programs in 1965. Initially a women’s college, the institution became coeducational in 1969; three men graduated as partofthe class of1970. The college expanded itsofferingsto include master’sdegreesin 1972 andaddedevening undergraduate programs in1988.

    In 2001,the college established four schools:Schoolof Arts andHumanities, School of Sciences, School of Business andManagement, andSchool of EducationandLeadership. Theinstitution's namewas changed to Notre Dame de Namur University that same year. In 2009,the School of Arts and Humanities and School of Sciences merged to become the College of Arts and Sciences. The School of Education and Leadership was changed to theSchool of Education and Psychology in2016.

    In an effort to provide access to a greater number of students, the university began offering partnershipsin specificdegree programswith local community collegesin 2009, allowing students to complete an NDNU degree on the community collegecampus. NDNU first achieved its statusasa Hispanic-Serving Institution, meaning its undergraduate populationis at least 25% Hispanic, in2009, and maintains that status to this day. In 2010, NDNU launched its Gen 1 program for first-generation

    students. Online degrees were added in 2012, and a new Ph.D. program in art therapy, NDNU’s first doctoral program andthe first Ph.D. program inart therapy inthe nation, was establishedin2013. The University expanded its program offerings tothe city of Tracy in fall 2015.

In a collegial community, the corporate person of the Universityand the persons ofthe faculty, staff, administration, and the student body bear mutual responsibility to exercise professional competence andtoextendtoone another the trustand respectthatfosteran environmentforthe exerciseof academic freedom.

    Education credential programs are accredited by the California Commissionon Teacher Credentialing.

    The MA Marriage and Family Therapy program (MA MFT) and theMA Art Therapy program (MA AT), bothinthe Art Therapy Psychology Department, are approved by the AmericanArt Therapy Association. These programs are in compliance with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences requirements for programs leading to MFTlicensure (MA MFT) and LPCC licensure (MAAT), respectively.

    The Office of the Provost comprises Academic Affairs and Student Affairs and through thesetwo areas oversees abroadarray of University services andprograms that support studentsin meeting their curricular and co-curricular goals.

    Academic Affairs

    The Academic Affairs Division is responsible for all of the academic programs and related academic and student support servicesof the University. NDNU's academic programs are organizedintoone college andtwoschools, each headed by an academic dean:

    • College of Arts andSciences

    • School of Business and Management

    • School of Education and Psychology

    The Academic Affairs Division also overseas and promotes many of the resources of the University that support studentsthroughout their career here. Services overseen by Academic Affairs include academic advising, Student Success, Library, Diversity, and Registrar. All these academic support services work collaboratively to offer studentsthe appropriate support to achieve a high standard of academicexcellence.

    Student Affairs

    The Student Affairs Division enhances student learning at Notre Dame de Namur University through programs and student servicesintended to promote student success. Services and programs within Student Affairs areoverseenby the Deanof Students Office andinclude Campus Programs, Career Services, Counseling andHealthServices, Dining Services, Disabilities Services, Housing andResidential Life, Spirituality, andthe Sr. Dorothy Stang Center for Social Justice andCommunity Engagement.

    University Services

    Academic Advising

    Each student is assigned an advisor, who is afaculty orstaff member within the student'smajor field of study. In areas with staff advisors, afaculty mentor is assigned. Thementoring relationship with a faculty advisor is a central feature ofthe NDNU experience. Academic advisors help

    studentswith program planning and directstudents to University and external resources as needed. Faculty advisors/mentors help students to clarify academic and career goalsand take appropriate stepsto meet those goals.

    Student Success Center

    The Student Success Center provides learning and support servicesfor day, evening, accelerated, undergraduate and graduatestudents to reach their academic goals whileattendingNDNU. TheStudent Success Center uses theresources ofthe NDNU community ofstudents, faculty and staff to guidethedevelopment of each student. Services includeaccessible, user-friendly, positive learning environments, individualized assessment of learningstrengthsand individualized learning strategiesbased on learning strengths. Highly trained faculty, staff and peer tutors guide students in theirlearning assisted by study skillsworkshopsand support in areaslike time management and goal-setting strategies, critical thinking fundamentals, test-taking and note-taking skillsand textbook reading.

    As a place tostudy andfindhelp, the Student Success Center meets students' needs ranging from building basic study skillsto preparing for admission to graduate schools. With the goal of helping studentsbecome independent and effectivelearners, theCenter provides friendly and free learning supportservices to all NDNU students. Supplemental Instruction (SI) isalso offered in the areas ofmath and science. The Centeris located on the Quad in Campus Center.

    International Student Office

    The International Student Office (ISO) assists NDNU’s diverse populationof international students withtheir academic, cultural, and social transition to lifein theUnited States and at the University. The ISO provides advisingand support pertainingto student visas and federal regulations and maintains studentrecords/I-20s through the StudentExchange and VisitorInformation Service(SEVIS). TheISO provides new students with pre-arrival information, hosts the International Orientationand sponsors programming, events and information forums forinternational students.

    Library Services

    The Gellert Library upholds the core values of Notre Dame de Namur University andserves its students and communityby:

    Disabilities Services

    The Disabilities Services is dedicated to improving the educational development of students with documented disabilities andtoenhancing understanding andsupport within the campus community.     Office of the Registrar

    The Office of the Registrar is the official recorder and keeper of student academicrecords. Records are maintained in compliance with federal privacy regulations (FERPA). The office is chargedtohelpmaintainNDNU’s academic integrity through effectivecommunication of, adherenceto, and administration of university policies. Services provided by theofficeincluderegistration, degree audit, enrollment verification, andtranscripts.

    Writing Center

    Offered both as a course and as a drop-in resource, the Writing Center helps students to develop as writers, focusing on the writing process: brainstorming, clustering, outlining, freewriting, editing andrevising. The Center offers individual tutoring ingrammar, researchandessay organization. The Writing Center alsoaddresses the specificneedsof international students, emphasizing revision ofessays and individualized instruction in idiom, mechanics and grammar.

    Campus Programs

    The Campus Programs Office coordinates ahost of student activitiesand servicesto promote a vibrant campuslife at NDNU. Based on the University'smission of values-basedlearning the office develops studentleadership to encourage a diverse and dynamic campus community. Among the operationswithin the CampusPrograms OfficeareProgramming Board - astudent team which plans and coordinates a calendar of programs and activities to promotelearning, school spirit, and fun;RegisteredStudent Organizations - more than 30 clubs representing a wide array ofinterests, cultures, and activities at NDNU; New Student Programs - which offers orientationexperiences for all new students; andStudent Assembly - arepresentativestudent governancesystem thatprovides a studentvoice on campus issues.

    Career Services

    Career Services provides a full range of career resources, including individualcareer counseling, part-time and full-time job postings, job search assistance, and acareer resources library. CareerServices also offers classes thatprovide the opportunity for students toexplore personal values and interests, assess their skills, and explore career options. Career Services sponsors several career-related events throughout theyear, includinginternship fairs, job fairs, networking events and an etiquette lunch.

    Counseling and Health Services

    The primary focus of Counseling and Health Services is to enhanceand promotethepsychological well-being, personal growth, andacademic success of students. The Counseling andHealthServices Office provides students an opportunity to discuss concerns and generateoptions with trained professionals in a confidential setting. In counseling servicesstudentscan explore waysto become more effective in personal relationships, to increase self-understanding andacceptance, togainsupport during emotional crises, and to clarify short- and long-range goals. Health servicesoffershealth education, triage, and referrals to manage physical health.

    Student Affairs

    The Student Affairs Office is led by the Dean of Students and is responsiblefor overseeingtheoperation on campus which includes most of the student service programs. The Dean and Assistant Dean of Students promote the mission of the University inthe co-curricular programsand activities on campus. TheOfficecollaborates in thedevelopment andimplementationof policies, procedures,

    and initiatives based on student development needs and trends in highereducation. The Deans also advocate forstudent and community needsand provide support and assistanceto students with concerns or problems.

    Dining Services

    BonAppétit Catering provides dining services tothe campuscommunity. Studentsliving on campusare required to selecta meal plan thatfits theirlifestyle. Commuter students canpurchase a flex account withthe Business Office tobuy meals at a discountedrate.

    Housing and Residential Life

    Housing and Residential Life provides a healthy and safe living and learning community that embraces allforms of diversity. It alsois a place where students are challengedand supportedintheir development of values, personal responsibility and integrity through programs, staffengagement, and leadership opportunities. TheUniversity offers students several different living options: traditional co-educational residencehall facilities with double and triple rooms, single genderapartments forupper-divisionundergraduates, andsingle gender suite-style residenceswith single rooms.

    Public Safety

    The Office of Public Safety strives to provide asafe and secure campus environment to ensurean appropriateliving, learning, and work place for everyone at NDNU.Officers are on duty around the clock every day to patrol campusand provide assistance where theyare needed. Public Safety also oversees theparking management program oncampus.

    Spirituality

    The Spirituality Office engages students in aprocess that supportstheir spiritual development and illuminatesthe connection between spiritualityand social change. Inspired by the Sisters of Notre Dame, the Spirituality Office strives to create diverse opportunities for all members of the University community to tend to the holy in themselves, each other, and the world.It offers annualretreats, spiritual direction, immersion experiences and opportunities to participate in liturgy and spirituality workshops. Spirituality also works closely with the Dorothy Stang Center for Social Justice and Community Engagement, offering several collaborative, justice-orientedprograms eachyear. Ateam of studentsand staff works together to support this vision.

    Sr. Dorothy Stang Center for Social Justice and Community Engagement

    In support of the University's mission to educate for socialjustice and globalpeace, the Sister Dorothy Stang Center at NDNU offers students opportunities to develop and to participate inmutually beneficial partnerships betweenthe University and organizations in the surrounding community. A keycomponent of thework of theCenter is support for and encouragement of community-basedlearning, a method of integrating community involvement activities into academic courses and student leadership programs. Faculty, staff, andstudents work inpartnershipwith community organizations so thatstudents can reach learning objectives while participating in meaningfulcommunityactivity. Guided bya committee of faculty, staff and studentsand an Advisory Board of community representatives, the Centerpromotes the education of studentsascommunity leaders.

    Organizations, Activities, and Events The University offers numerous opportunities to make connections, honor excellence, and develop deeper understandings of our community, our world, andourselves throughparticipationinactivities, organizations, and events.

    NDNU Alumni Community

    The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations serves all NDNU alumni and family members of current students, helpingthemto stay connected with each other and with the University. The goal of the Office is to encourage alumni to supporttheiralma materthrough service, leadership, advocacy, and philanthropy.

    Alumni Events

    The Office of Alumni and ParentRelations sponsors many events includingclass reunions, alumni social mixers, and alumni athletic reunions that providenetworkingopportunities tomeet fellow alumni inthe area anddeveloppersonal andprofessional connections. Inthe spring the Office hosts the annual Alumni Reunion Week which is an opportunity to welcome alumni back on campusto celebrate their individual school/college (School ofBusiness and Management, College ofArts and Sciences, School of Education and Psychology). In thefallthe Office hosts the annual Homecoming, an opportunity to reconnect, remember, and reengage with fellow alumni, students, parents, faculty, and staff on campus.

    Student Assembly

    The Student Assembly aims to provide active and meaningful representation for students in thegovernanceof Notre Dame de Namur University, tohonor the Hallmarks of the Notre Dame Learning Community, and to promote the general welfare of the community of Notre Dame de Namur University. The Board of Trustees ofNotre Dame de Namur University recognizes and authorizes theStudent Assembly as therepresentativesystem of the entire student body.

    Commencement

    At the endof eachspring semester, the University honors its graduates with a commencement ceremonyheld on the NDNU campus. (See the Academic Calendarfordates.)The ceremony features aprocession of the University's graduates, faculty, administration, Board of Trustees, and honorees. The program is highlightedby speeches from a graduatingundergraduateand graduatestudent alongwith a distinguished invited speaker. The ceremony concludeswith the conferring of degrees.

    Convocation

    The University celebrates the beginning of each academic year with this formal gatheringthat includes an academic procession, a featuredspeaker, anda welcome tothe new studentsfrom the President, Provost, and campuscommunity.

    Honor Societies

    Notre Dame de Namur University offers membership in the following honorsocieties:

    Alpha Mu Gamma

    Alpha MuGamma is the national language honor society. The NDNU – Belmont chapter, Alpha Delta, is opentomenand women. Thepurposeof AlphaMu Gammais therecognition oflinguistic achievement, the encouragement of interest inthe languages, literatures, andcivilizationof other peoples, andthe furthering of the ideals of friendship and international understanding. Formembership, a student must have two college "A's" and one college "B" inthe samelanguage, each representing3 units, or twohighschool "A's" may replace one college "B.” One need not be a language major or even be continuing coursesin the language. There are special conditionsfor international students.

    Delta Mu Delta

    Delta Mu Deltais an international honor society that recognizes academic excellence in Baccalaureate, Master's, and Doctorate degree business administration programs at Associationof Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)-accredited schools. Thepurposeof the society is to promote highereducation in business administration by recognizingand rewardingscholastic accomplishment. Undergraduateand graduatebusiness administration students who fulfill minimum units completed in the program and rankin the top 20 percentof the School of Business andManagement are invitedtobecome lifelong members.

    Lambda Pi Eta

    The AlphaBetaGammachapter of LambdaPi Eta, the official CommunicationNational Honor Society, beganinMay 2004. The Greek letters represent what Aristotle describedinhis book of rhetoric as the three ingredients of persuasion: Logos (Lambda) meaning logic, Pathos (Pi) relating to emotion and Ethos (Eta)defined as character, credibilityand ethics. For membership, a student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher with 60 semester or 90 quarter credit hours completedanda GPAof 3.25 or higher incommunicationstudies courses with12 semester or 18 quarter credit hourscompleted.

    Omicron Delta Kappa

    Omicron Delta Kappa Society, Inc. is the National Leadership Honor Societyfor collegestudents. TheNotreDame de Namur University circle of Omicron Delta Kappa recognizes and encourages superiorscholarship, leadership and exemplary character.Membership in ODK is a mark of highest distinction and honor. The Society recognizes achievementin scholarship, athletics, campus or community service, social andreligious activities, campusgovernment, journalism, speech, massmedia, and the creative and performing arts. Emphasis is placed on the development of thewholeperson, both as amember of the college community andas a contributor toa better society.

    Psi Chi

    Established in 1995, the campus chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society inpsychology, stimulates professional growththroughextracurricular programs andactivities and provides practical experienceand fellowship through participation in local, regional, and national conferences. Undergraduate studentsmayapplyfor membership with the completion of at least four psychology courses, a cumulative GPAof 3.0 or higher, and apsychology GPA of 3.8or higher. Graduatestudents may apply for membership with the completion of four

    Intercollegiate Athletics

    The Athletics Department provides students with acompetitive sportsprogram that isconsistent with the University's mission of education of the whole person. Intercollegiate athletics plays a large part in the student-athlete'soverall collegiate educational experience. Student-athletes arestudents first, athletes second. Success is measured not only by wins but also by thedevelopment of skill, the cultivationof team andcommunityspirit and the abilityto achieve a productive academic and personal life.     Study Abroad and Off-campus Study

    NDNU offers opportunities for students tostudy abroadfora summer, semester, oryear. The University has affiliations with awidevariety of programs throughout the world.

    Students can receivefull credit and transfer financial aid while attending accredited universities abroad.Students can also earn credit for participating in internshipsand service-learning projects.A study abroad program must be approvedby the study abroadadvisor andby the student'smajor advisor. Information and guidance on the study abroad programs is available from the Study Abroad Office.

    Students at NDNU may also study off-campusfor a semester, or year at one of itssister colleges, Trinity College inWashington, D.C., or Emmanuel College inBoston. Students participating inthese programscan transfercredits and financial aid and need notfile foran official leave of absence. Students alsohave the

    opportunity toattendthe WashingtonSemester Program. The University has an institutional agreement to nominate studentseach year to participate in thisprogram through AmericanUniversity inWashington, D.C.

    NDNU faculty also organize programs for students abroad. Students can receivecredit for participating in trips and service projects. In recent years, tripsto Italy and a project in Guadalajara, Mexico haveoffered valuableoff-campusexperiences for students.

    Visiting Scholars Program

    The Sr. Catharine Julie Cunningham Endowed Chair, dedicatedtothe late president of College of Notre Dame, brings regional andnational scholars tocampus.

    StudentAcademic Rights andResponsibilities

    Student Conduct

    Notre Dame de Namur University expects high standards of honesty andintegrity from all members of the community. The Universityhasa dutytoprotect its educational purposethrough thesettingof standards of scholarship and conduct. To thisend, each student isresponsible forreading and complying with the "StudentConduct Code," whichcanbe foundinthe Student Handbook.

    Privacy Rights of Students

    In accordance with the Family EducationalRights and Privacy Act (FERPA), thefollowing information may bereleased withoutstudentconsent:

    • Student's name

    • Address (campus, local, and/or permanent)

    • NDNU student email address

    • Telephone numbers

    • Date and place of birth

    • Photograph

    • Major field of study and classification

    • Dates of attendance, degrees, and honors received

    • Most recent previous educational institution attended

    • Weight and height ofmembers ofintercollegiate athletic teams

    No additional information may be released without written consent of the student. Third parties, including parents andlegal guardians, donot have access toa student'stranscripts, grades, classschedules, or otherrecords withouta Third Party Authorization consentfrom the student. A studentmay prohibitthe release ofall information by submitting a written request to the Office of the Registrar. Exceptions torelease of informationwithout consent are the following:

    • University officials who have a legitimate educational interest in a student's records

    • Officials of other universities who have a legitimate educational interest in astudent's records; Universities in which a student seeks to enroll

    • Certain government officials acting in their legitimate functions

    • Those persons and agencies seeking records in connection with a student'sapplication for or receipt of financial aid

    • Authorities acting incompliance witha judicial order or pursuant toany lawfully issuedsubpoena

    • Accrediting agencies

    • Certainofficials of the U.S. Department of Education, the ComptrollerGeneral, and state and local educational authorities, in connection with certain state or federally supported education programs

    • In an emergency,appropriate persons if knowledge of such information isnecessary to protect the health or safety of the student or other persons(According to 34 C.F.R. 99.36, the wording of this section“shall be strictly construed.”)

    As of January 3, 2012, the U.S. Department of Education’s FERPA regulations expand thecircumstances under which your education records and personallyidentifiable information (PII) contained in such records, including your Social Security Number, grades, or other private information, may be accessed without your consent.

    First, theU.S. Comptroller General, theU.S. Attorney General, the U.S. Secretary of Education, or state and local education authorities (“Federal and StateAuthorities”) may allow access to your records and PII without your consent to anythird partydesignated bya Federal or StateAuthority to evaluatea federal- or state-supported education program. Theevaluation may relateto any program that is “principally engagedinthe provisionof education”such asearlychildhood education and job training as well as any program thatis administered by an education agency or institution. Second, Federal and StateAuthorities may allow access toyour educationrecords and PII without your consent to researchers performing certain typesof studies, in certain caseseven when we object toor donot request suchresearch.

    Federal and StateAuthorities must obtain certain use-restriction and data security promises from the entities thatthey authorize to receive yourPII, butthe Authorities neednot maintaindirect control over suchentities. Inaddition, in connection with StatewideLongitudinal DataSystems, StateAuthorities may collect, compile, permanently retain, andshare without your consent PII from youreducationrecords, andthey may track your participationineducationandother programs by linking such PII to other personal information about you that they

    obtainfrom other Federal or State data sources, including workforce development, unemployment insurance, child welfare, juvenile justice, military service, and migrant student recordssystems.

    Under FERPA, students have the right to:

    • Inspect and review information contained in their education records

    • Challenge the contents of their educationrecords

    • Request a hearing if the outcome of the challenge is unsatisfactory

    • Submit an explanatory statement for inclusion in theeducation record, if theoutcomeof thehearingis unsatisfactory

    • Securea copy of the institutional policy regarding privacy rights

    • Filecomplaints with theDepartment of Education concerning alleged failure to complywith FERPA
